Video: Palin tells Obama to veto bill he dragged out of Congress

posted at 12:20 pm on February 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Sarah Palin’s advice on Porkulus will evoke laughter in the White House that pushed it through Congress, but perhaps someone there has begun listening to her on energy. Palin says Barack Obama has started coming around on the natural-gas pipeline, but may need a little more convincing on enabling increased production on the clean-burning fuel. Palin doesn’t wait for Greta to ask before getting in an argument against the Fairness Doctrine, near the end (via Conservatives for Palin):

PALIN: Hey, Greta, another thing though that I would add too is that it’s not just the stimulus package that we need to keep our eyes and ears open about right now in America. But it’s this Fairness Doctrine — it’s these attempts in Congress that are being discussed at this point to shut down voices that are asking the tough questions. … If there’s any attempt to quash any of these voices, that’s a scary thing for our country and our democracy.

The challenge to Obama to veto his own economic policy is a little silly, even though it deserves to be vetoed, burnt, pulverized, and flushed. Obama got exactly what he wanted and has no reason at all to veto it. Had he been displeased with the product, Obama would have held a much different press conference a week ago. Opposing the bill on its merits is good, but demanding a veto doesn’t do much for Palin’s credibility.

Palin does much better on the Fairness Doctrine. She put it in exactly the right terms, which the American public will understand as not “fair” at all but an attempt to silence criticism.

Calling for a Veto gets her on the news as a direct competitor to Obama. Smart move.

I don’t know if it’s still up there so I took a screen cap of Yahoo’s front page. Hmmmm, something looks wierd about that description of the Bin Laden/3 hideout story. Does that say “Obama Bin Laden?” Yup. Here it is.

Vaporman87 on February 17, 2009 at 1:28 PM

This is disgusting. That jackass Obama runs around the country burning up the taxpayer’s money while the nation goes deeper and deeper into debt. Now, he’s about to put on a big show for a “stimulus” bill that will do nothing but give billions upon billions of dollars to his parasitic constituents and left wing supporters. For the first time in my life I no longer have any faith or confidence in this government and believe it is totally untrustworthy. Whether it will last a year or five years is questionable but it is certain that it will soon collapse into civil strife and street riots. It’s a very sad time for the Republic.

I saw this interview last night. Great red meat for the conservative base. And the fact that she’s right about both the porkulus bill and the Fairness Doctrine doesn’t hurt.

As for those who say she’s too damaged to get the nomination in 2012, did you see the crowds this woman was drawing during the campaign? And that was as the VP nominee. Imagine her at the top of the ticket with a rejuvenated GOP and conservative movement in what could very well be a toxic year for Democrats.

.

Did Obama devise this bill? Does he even know himself all that’s in it? Somehow I doubt it.

I don’t think Palin’s veto “demand” is such a bad thing. You go, Girl!

misslizzi on February 17, 2009 at 1:33 PM

People won’t remember the timing of her call for the veto. The important part a couple of years from now is that she called for it.

The woman with executive experience just gave the man with none a lesson on How To Govern 101.

Where was the call to flood the White House phone lines asking him to do just this thing? Everyone folded up and gave in once it passed the legislative branch. We all knew it would pass there, but we still tried. We’re all guilty of giving him a free pass.

‘Cuda just laid it all at his feet. He can’t hide behind Reid and Pelosi now. He has the power to fix this. He won’t.

Sarah now shows on the record Obama now owns this mess.

Palin was absolutely awesome as usual. There is noone else in the GOP today who comes even close in terms of charisma and conservative principles.

I’ve read a rumor that she has over 50,000 individual donors signed up to her PAC (SarahPac). If so, she could have raised tens of millions of dollars already. Her Facebook page just passed 500,000 (In comparison, Jindal & Sanford has just a few hundred, truly pathetic).

Whenever she wants the GOP nomination, she will have it.

Ed, I usually agree with you, but here I think you’re way off-base. She’s clearly suggesting a veto because she’s concerned (and perhaps appalled) that this thing was passed without proper vetting and debate. She makes that plain in the interview.

Palin does much better just as good on the Fairness Doctrine.

Fixed it for you. :)

The real scary thing is that Congress won’t even be involved. This sort of thing will be done by the FCC.

Norwegian on February 17, 2009 at 1:37 PM

Wouldn’t bet against her. Our pessimistic prognosticators and Knights of the Holy RINO seem to have completely forgotten how the Republican primaries play out.

If Iowa and New Hampshire were next month, Palin could easily generate plurality victories on the way to the nomination just by winking at the camera once or twice – no matter how much the haters and skeptics shouted, moaned, and embarrassed and lowered themselves with their personal attacks and distortions. If she were actually to campaign – and presuming that she’s aged well and that intervening events haven’t turned every reasonable political calculation upside down and inside out, and against her rather than for her – there’d hardly be any reason for anyone else to show up except for the exposure and to help her out with some sparring.

Hey Norwegian, if you know this, do you think perhaps that Obama and his merry men and women and his allies in the MSM, nutroots and Huffington Post have got a handle on this as well?

Look, I have never accused Obama of being stupid. Folks, he is not. He is charismatic, amorally savvy, and ruthless with the personality of an egomaniac.

Obama is prepared to do whatever it takes to install himself the permanent President of the USA-and that includes taking out Sarah Palin.

As for this clip. Why must she be so transparent. Look at me in my cute little racing outfit (th

Oh the content? That matters? Because her fans on here are intimating that all she has to do is “wink” a few times at the cameras and she’s got the GOP nomination in the bag. Apparently what y’all want is an effective (seductive?) winker as POTUS. But she sounded just horrible talking about the stimulus bill. It’s like she wanted to accuse Obama of expanding welfare rolls, but didnt have the cajones to actually say welfare, she just threw “expanding the rolls” into her monologue at random. It was cringey. She’s always very effective communicator when it comes to energy policy, here is no different. Aren’t people wanting her to show some fluency on an issue that’s NOT energy at some point if she wants to be POTUS? Last if she really wants to get a majority of Americans up in arms about the Fairness doctrine please don’t link Limbaugh with it, bad move. Once again she demonstrates she doesn’t know where the middle is.

Then deny that Obama wants the USA to go the way of Chavez and Venezuela and abandon term limits.

And then try to deny that the MSM was on a search and destroy mission to take Sarah out during the 2008 campaign and that campaign is ongoing and will not be disbanded until Sarah is marginalized so that she does not represent the GOP in 2012, and finally try to deny that the efforts by the MSM, the nutroots, Huffington Post to damage Sarah is not orchestrated by forces aligned tightly with Obama or to Obama himself.

If you do, we conservatives will not believe you. We are not the dumbed-down Obamatrons that Ziegler interviewed. We conservatives have a brain and we make great use of it.

Your argument might work, if it weren’t for the fact that she wore “racing gear” supporter her husbands racing team in previous iron dog races. Not to mention that other wives were there wearing their husbands racing gear.

Swing and a miss, on your part… better luck next time.

But she sounded just horrible talking about the stimulus bill. DeathToMediaHacks on February 17, 2009 at 2:05 PM

I don’t think I have heard anyone else bring up the unfunded mandates for states. It’s not like she’s repeating party talking points. Realizing that states are going to get stuck with perpetually higher budgets because of the federal stimulus bankruptcy bill appears to be pretty important. I’m not quite sure what it would take for you to consider it fluent, though…. Perhaps she should bring up exaggerated and out-right false claims such this being the “worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.” Would that qualify as fluent?

“I said I would lead this country away from partisanship, and this is the most partisan bill I have ever seen.
“I said I would work to eliminate pork, and this bill has more new pork in it than any previous bill in history.
“I said what I meant, and meant what I said.
“Therefore, I am vetoing this bill, and asking both parties to work together on a stimulus bill that is truly in the best interest of all the people of our great country.

Obama would own public opinion.

Thanks for posting this ED. I was lamenting on the Bristol thread that no one would care about this part of Greta’s show today. Good to see at least HotAir cares about more than just what Bristol has to say. Had not noticed this posting until now.

I see the trolls are out in full force on this thread as well as Bristol’s. I’ve been reading this site for about 6 months and just registered yesterday. Looks like a bunch of trolls did as well, as I don’t recall seeing that many of them here even on Palin related threads.

Can’t remember the poster name above, I assume another troll, but I found nothing in her comments that seemed shallow and incoherent about the stimulus. Even if there were, if you were at a sporting event waiting for your spouse to finish a race, and that was your focus at the moment, would you be ready with a bunch of facts and figures about the stimulus? Sheeesh, give it a rest. Even our own elected officials (incl our dork Messiah) have no clue about it.

upinak on February 17, 2009 at 1:09 PM

The timing actually works out well with Begich in office. If she wants to take a run at 2012, she can shut it down in 2010 with Pernell in place as the heir apparent.

This gives her the maximum amount of time to get her funds together, work on her book, do some travel, give some speeches, and spearhead the mid-terms. No more frivolous ethics complaints and sniping about being out of the state too much. This also avoids putting her in the position of having to campaign for a job that she will end up holding for 18 months at best. What does she say to the voters?

If she wins in 2012, she’s POTUS. If she loses, she has two years to rest and recover and can take a shot a Begich in 2014 if she still has the bug for politics.

The challenge to Obama to veto his own economic policy is not at all silly as her comment will be a reminder to The One that he had his chance to refuse to deliver this disasterous piece of crap to America. Instead, he will sign it and be responsible for placing black people who refuse to work, or get an education, along with the ILLEGAL Aliens ahead of the real hard working Americans who are the true backbone of this country. When America wakes up to that fact Sarah will remind people that she told him so. OWNED!

When in reality the VETO interview shows her to be an experienced executive with a real-world, practical policy standard, who is no-nonsense about speaking the truth.

So thanks Ed for posting this. Better late than never. And better even with your mistaken comment that it “hurts her credibility” than not at all. Just the opposite is true.

That 5-minute interview does so much to improve her credibility that the MSM is avoiding it like the plague.

I’ve seen it posted in only one place: The Chicago Tribune’s Swamp http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2009/02/palin_guys_and_gals_shoulda_re.html

And I commented there. Could use some help if any of you wanna’ come over, BTW.

Oh and thanks for opening up comments, Ed! That’s a sincere thanks!

Remember Rush has an average listening audience of 20m, Sean 14m and Mark Levin about 6m. Allow for an overlap you are still left with about 20m individuals. It would only take 5% of their combined audiences to form a million man (woman) march. And many of them would gladly donate their time and money as well in supporting Rush, Sean and Mark in other venues.
technopeasant on February 17, 2009 at 3:10 PM

Techno, I’d quit my six-figure job now if Rush gave the word. Just the chance to tell my son some day that “I was there when the call swept over the land, like a fire on the prairie, a rolling storm, …

To risk all we cherish,
To pray that last Rosary with loved ones,
To put on your best pair of boots,
To make love to your woman one last time,

to run the gauntlet for that wet, torn, raggedty, piece of smelly dirty chewed up paper with the words “We the People…”

I was there.

Sapwolf on February 17, 2009 at 3:31 PM

Damned if ya do…

Jim Treacher on February 17, 2009 at 1:31 PM

Ditto your sentiment 1000x over.

Man, this is really getting just ridiculous. No longer are we happy that conservatives oppose the stimulus … if they don’t do it in the correct, pre-approved way, then we must take them to task for it as if they never opposed it at all.

(shakes head at the lunacy)

thirteen28 on February 17, 2009 at 3:38 PM

The suggestion of veto was a good thing. Palin took some heat for a few days when people mistakenly believed she was supportive of the stimulus. This was another affirmation of the fact that she was opposed to it. It also solidifies her position of opposition to the far-left Obama agenda.

doug1981 on February 17, 2009 at 3:41 PM

I find it interesting that when Palin now speaks, some people assess her comments solely in terms of whether or not they aid or diminish her political future. Hence, Ed’s ridiculous statement about “credibility.” Hey Ed, did you ever stop to think that many of us just want a politician to cut the crap and say the right thing??

Kudos Sarah

Why didn’t my last 2 posts post in this topic?

Hello? HELLOOO!!!! Testing 1, 2, 3, …

DannoJyd on February 17, 2009 at 3:56 PM

Frankly, once you become a follower of Sarah you never doubt her credibility again. It is only the MSM, elitists and pundits who indulge in this exercise.

My concern about Sarah is whether she will be savvy enough to combat the MSM and ‘evildoers’ and maintain her credibility with swing voters while they try to take her down.

Sarah needs a good team around her to make her aware of the sinister forces out there who live for the day that Sarah is not longer a credible opponent for Obama.

technopeasant on February 17, 2009 at 3:57 PM

I disagree slightly techno. As an admirer of Sarah’s, I have one or two doubts about whether she can demonstrate credibility on a few issues (although she certainly has time to attain and demonstrate that credibility). But that isn’t the issue here. What’s beyond silly with this post is that Ed can’t resist taking a jab at her even though he and everyone else here know she’s absolutely right.

I agree.

Too many posters on HA focus on the glass half-empty rather than half-full. We need to get our spirits up for the long grueling fight ahead.

Sapwolf on February 17, 2009 at 4:30 PM

Bush should have done the same to the TARP scam bailout he dragged out of Congress. Where was Sarah when that went down? Oh… she was cheering for it.

Where was she when Bush and McCain pushed for a $150,000,000,000 redistribution of wealth (the Stimulus checks that went to lower and middle income taxpayers) last year?

popularpeoplesfront on February 17, 2009 at 4:37 PM

Thanks so much for posting this interview. I thought the Governor had some great on point comments.

So were Ace, Allah, and a bunch of people here. And what was she supposed to do when McLame decided to go for the TARP? Use some common sense, for God’s sake.

I agree with your assessment. Sarah should have spoken up then to oppose TARP but she had to support McCain who voted for it. It was McCain who put Sarah in an untenable position.

To be fair to Sarah, she did say that she would not favor any more TARP’s, that it ran counter to the principle of free enterprise and bailed out people who failed on the taxpayer dollar who did not deserve it.

But if you want to brand Sarah forever because of her support for McCain’s vote then don’t vote for her.

technopeasant on February 17, 2009 at 4:58 PM

Shouldn’t this “woman” be at home making sure her teenage daughter stays unpregnant?

Monkei on February 17, 2009 at 1:32 PM

Shouldn’t Al Gore be teaching his kids about the dangers of drinking, smoking pot and then driving a 100 MPH?

Shouldn’t the Kennedy Clan have taught teh Skakel cousins not to rape and murder their little girl friends?

Shouldn’t John Edwards be at home with his real family?

Shouldn’t Joe Biden teach his boy business ethics.

Should Rosie Cater be not hanging around with mass murderers and pedophiles?

hawkdriver on February 17, 2009 at 5:03 PM

Always a pleasure… Sarah shows that she understands in a very real kinda way that this bill (now law) is not understood by those who voted on it. I heard this morning on the way to work that Philadelphia will now begin wading through the document to see what they can get out of it… The mayor said that it will take weeks to know their share…

By the way… Who is the old dude standing behind Palin in the blue wind breaker! ? It looks a bit like her dad but I’m not sure. Either way, tough old bird, lookin very comfortable in the lite jacket…

Monkei on February 17, 2009 at 1:32 PM

This is such a stupid comment, I almost have to assume it’s an attempt at sarcasm. Why is “woman” in quotation marks? Do you doubt that Sarah Palin is, in fact, a woman?

She’s been insulted in a myriad of ways, but I don’t recall anyone doubting that this lovely creature is, in fact, a woman.

Jaibones on February 17, 2009 at 5:16 PM

As corny as she may come across from time to time, I have no doubt that she is a very quick study. And it’s not just book smarts either. To me, it’s also refreshing to see someone who’s and has a level of practicality that generally isn’t seen today. ..Not referring to the Veto comment here..

On Porkapalooza…
This is an economic stimulus bill. And a very nice one at that. …Providing you want to stimulate growth of Government.

hawkdriver on February 17, 2009 at 5:03 PM

Good list. Let me embellish:

Shouldn’t John Edwards be with wife at her chemo treatment, instead of off shagging some skank in LA?

Jaibones on February 17, 2009 at 5:18 PM

How about:

Shouldn’t fat Albert be insulating his 10,000 square foot house against heat loss, instead of flying to Japan in a private jet to lecture poor people about global warming?

Jaibones on February 17, 2009 at 5:20 PM

Dude, you are an idiot. Do you realize how cold it is right now and the “racing gear” she is wearing is keeping her warm. STFU and go sit in the corner like you should be.

LOL. Yep that’s what I always wear when it’s cold out.

Well if she follows tradition she’ll accept it, than publicly reject the windfall when it becomes there’s a populist outcry, while still spending the money anyway.
