Video: Bristol Palin says abstinence “not realistic”

posted at 9:30 am on February 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I’m of two minds on this clip. Bristol Palin isn’t running for office, but she had to know that doing big-media interviews would mean that she had to have an answer for some political issues surrounding her teen pregnancy. After all, for what other reason would Greta Van Susteren invite her onto her show?

GRETA: I don’t want to pry too personally, but obviously contraception is an issue here. Is that something that you were lazy about or not interested in, or do you have a philosophical or religious opposition to it, or –

BRISTOL: No, I don’t want to get into detail about that. But I think abstinence is like … I don’t know how to put it, like … the main … Everyone should be abstinent, but it’s not realistic at all.

GRETA: Why?

BRISTOL: Because — I don’t want to get into detail about it.

GRETA: [crosstalk] Just big picture, not about you –

BRISTOL: Because it’s more and more accepted.

Of course, acceptance is why many people want abstinence taught.  The entire idea is to push back against the acceptance of sexual activity among those who are ill-equipped to handle the emotional, health, and financial consequences of sexual activity.  That doesn’t mean that we don’t teach about contraception as well — it always amazes me when people consider the two mutually exclusive — but that explaining that only abstinence gives one complete protection against pregnancy and STDs in ways that condoms do not, as well as the risks of exploitation.

I had to laugh at Greta’s question about religious objections towards contraception keeping Bristol from using them to prevent pregnancy.  I haven’t yet known of a religion that objects to contraceptives but not to extramarital sex.  Catholics most famously object to contraception, and years ago my pastor discussed this with my young adult group.  He pointed out that having made the decision to sin with extramarital sex, using a condom would really be the least of our worries.

In case you need a lift after this clip, though, check out this video from Jim at Gateway Pundit.  Guess what Bristol thinks of bloggers obsessed with the pregnancies of herself and her mother? Gold:

Update: I second what Ace says — Bristol has a lot of courage in discussing this topic on national television. Also, please recall what I wrote when this story broke at the Republican convention. She and her family did the right thing when it counted, and we should remember that when watching this.

Really? The administrators of this site don’t like to have any fun is that what you’re telling me?

booyah on February 17, 2009 at 8:21 PM

Nope. They like having fun. However, boorish and hateful Trolls do give them (and us) gas, however. And these Trolls usually wind up saying something so stupid and hateful that they get themselves banned. That’s what Joey was saying to you.

Methinks booyah is only the first of the libtards who signed up yesterday to show themselves.

Underfunded? Contraceptive use is taught in most high schools in this country. How bloody difficult is it to figure out how to put on a condom? The instructions are on the box. Three clicks on any internet browser can get you detailed pictures and instructions. It doesn’t take a genius to figure this out. Kids don’t act responsibly because the nature of the act itself doesn’t lend itself to rational thought.

You have no idea the circumstances surrounding this girl’s pregnancy.

Wait Little Boyyeah, here’s one where he’s really articulate.

“You are soooo right. Because, of course, cities dominated by Progressives (Detroit, New York, San Francisco, etc) and state dominated by Progressives (New Jersey, California, etc) don’t have any problems at all with teen sex and teen pregnancy.”

Of course they do. Most inner-city schools don’t even have enough funding for science books let alone contraceptive use. Schools need better sex-ed funding.

“You laughing about Bristol Palin and claiming that abstinence education doesn’t work makes just as much sense as me pointing at Erica and claiming that Progressives are idiots that just won’t learn that ’safer-sex’ education just doesn’t work.”

You’re right about my arguing tactic but wrong about your claim. Study after study shows that comprehensive sex education reduces pregnancy:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/03/080319151225.htm

http://www.hbns.org/getDocument.cfm?documentID=1676

http://www.injuryboard.com/national-news/study-comprehensive-sex-ed-helps-reduce-pregnancies.aspx?googleid=30228

etc…

Of course they do. Most inner-city schools don’t even have enough funding for science books let alone contraceptive use. Schools need better sex-ed funding.

First of all the governments (state and fed) spend BILLIONS upon BILLIONS on education … New Jersey is a fine example of an education that has tons of funding and crappy results

Anyway,

Which do you want, money for science books or sex ed?

joey24007 on February 17, 2009 at 8:41 PM

booyah on February 17, 2009 at 8:35 PM

So, was Gloucester High in Massachusetts also suffering from under-funded sex ed programs?

You’d be surprised in a country where 20% of the population thinks the sun orbits the earth.

“Which do you want, money for science books or sex ed?”

Both.

booyah on February 17, 2009 at 8:42 PM

You know, this should be none of our business. It’s our business because the Palin family agreed to be interviewed, and here we are.

Bristol sounds like a silly, stupid girl. I would have sounded exactly the same way.

I don’t think you can blame Governor Palin for Bristol not being willing to “keep her chin up and her skirt down.” That’s a Patsy Cliner. Isn’t it great?

Taking a sharp right here, I do think that climax has to be close to what it’s like to be with your Creator. I don’t think sex is just for procreation, but to distance it to far from that leads to all manner of trouble.

Scripture doesn’t really speak to this issue one way or another. The Onan passage has nothing to do with proscribing non-procreative sex or even masturbation.

The early Church took this passage, cast the Judaic underpinnings of it aside, and interpreted it in their own way, according to their own tastes.

Lifting and discarding the Levirate from the Onan passage in Scripture, substituting your own interpretation, and then just continuing on as if you have the right to do that is unconvincing at best, and perhaps sinful at worst.

For a little Church history here: during Augustine’s fight with the Pelagians, and according to Historian Paul Johnson, at one point in Church history, Augustine and a follower of Pelagius get into a little shouting match, and here is some of that, with a little background to put it in context:

One young follower [of Pelagius], Julian of Eclanum, engaged in spirited controversy with the angry old bishop. From their exchanges, fragmentary alas, Augustine emerges in an unpleasing light, a clever man stooping low for the purpose of vulgar appeal, remorselessly exploiting popular prejudice, an anti-intellectual, a hater of classical culture, a mob orator, and a sex-obsessive. In the infinitive wisdom of God, he noted the genitals were appropriately made the instruments for the transmission of original sin: “Ecce unde! That’s the place! That’s the place from which the first sin is passed on!” Adam had defied God -and for every man born, the shame at the uncontrollable stirring of the genitals was a reminder of and a fitting punishment for, the original crime of disobedience. Did not every man, he asked his cringing congregation, feel shame at having a wet dream? Of course he did. By contrast, Julian’s line seems a straightforward deployment of elementary classical reason:

“You ask me why I would not consent to the idea that there is a sin that is part of human nature. I answer: it is improbable. It is untrue. It is unjust and impious. It makes it seem as if the devil were the maker of men. It violates and destroys the freedom of will…by saying that men are so incapable of virtue, that in the very womb of their mothers they are filled with bygone sins…and, what is disgusting as it is blasphemous, this view of yours fastens, as its most conclusive proof, on the common decency with which we cover our genitals.”

Julian argued that sex was a kind of sixth sense, a form of neutral energy which might be used for good or ill. “Really?” replied Augustine, “is that your experience? So, you would not have married couples restrain that evil -I refer, of course, to your favorite good? So you would have them jump into bed whenever they like, whenever they felt stirred by the desire? Far be it from them to postpone it till bedtime…if this is the sort of married life you lead, don’t drag up your experience in debate.” [pg. 120-21]

Now read the following from the Greek Father, John Chrysostom:

“How do husband and wife become one flesh? As if she were gold receiving the purest gold, the woman receives the man’s seed with rich pleasure, and within her it is nourished, cherished, and refined. It is mingled with her own substance and returned as a child. But suppose there is no child; do they then remain two and not one? No; their intercourse effects the joining of their bodies, and they are made one, just as when perfume is mixed with ointment.”

“These are the two purposes for which marriage was instituted: to make us chaste, and to make us parents. Of these two, the reason of chastity takes precedence. . . . Marriage does not always lead to childbearing, although there is the word of the Lord which says ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.’ We have as witnesses all those who are married but childless. So the purpose of chastity takes precedence, especially now, when the whole world is filled with our kind.”

John Chrysostom is healthy, Augustine is not.

Sarah Palin doesn’t owe anyone any explanation. But as Conservatives and as people who know that illegitimacy is an assault against the Little Platoon (that’s Edmund Burke’s term for the Family); break that down as has been done and you get where we are now. It’s not all that material, philosophically speaking, that Bristol isn’t collecting welfare payments. She has a kid, she’s not married, and the family of the father of her baby are Jerry Springer material.

We don’t have to attack Bristol but we don’t have to cut her slack we wouldn’t cut anyone else either.

As I said, it’s none of our business. Would that the family had the good common sense to be quiet about this.

Bristol Palin is 18 years old, if she wants to tell her side and a media outlet is willing to hear it than that is her right.

She has been savaged since day one and know she felt the need to talk about it.

It is her right to do so.

I don’t believe this is a Sarah Palin endorsed interview.

joey24007 on February 17, 2009 at 8:46 PM

“Kids don’t act responsibly because the nature of the act itself doesn’t lend itself to rational thought. “

Are you trying to say that all people are irrational when they’re having sex? And how is that even relevant when the decision to use a contraceptive occurs BEFORE the physical act? This is why people carry condoms in their pockets and women take the pill. That is being responsible and is what should be taught. Not hard to understand.

booyah on February 17, 2009 at 8:46 PM

“lol, he started out that excited when he first got here. He slowed down a bit once he started getting slapped around.”

First Bizarro, Bristol is 18, of legal age, and can do anything she wants to do. To insinuate that Sarah should have forbid somebody of legal age to tow the line is so 19th century. Did you just awake like Rip Van Winkle did and not understand the world we now live in?

Sarah respects Bristol’s rights as an adult. If Sarah didn’t I get the impression that you would have been one of the first to accuse Sarah of riding roughshod over Bristol’s rights. You can’t have it both ways.

technopeasant on February 17, 2009 at 2:05 PM

Your demeanor, and interpretation of my statement to seeming “so 19th century” makes you sound like a spoiled kid who had baby boomer parents afraid to say and stick to, ‘no, you can’t do that, that’s not good for you’, because they hated to see you cry when you didn’t get your way.

Good parents have healthy control of their children – Sarah and her hubby obviously didn’t have Bristol under enough control to have her act in her own best sexual interest. At 17, she was far more than old enough to have known better than to be so impulsive with Levi. But, she hadn’t learned that yet, showing that she received less-than-adequate parenting in regards to practicing self-control.

If her parents were wiser, they would have understood that it wasn’t a good idea to have their 18-but-who-carries-on-like-she-is-14-or-15 y/o daughter be interviewed like that, realizing that her mother is a potential candidate for President. It was embarrassing to see how immature she was, a poor reflection on her parents.

The fact that her parents didn’t stop her like they rightfully could/should have reveals them to be oblivious parental simpletons. I guess there was enough evidence out there to already have reasonably come to that conclusion though, and that interview was just more fuel for the fire! :)

Beheading is becoming more and more accepted in some cultures too, but moral law derived from God’s Word provides good reason to say, “don’t do it!” Babies out of wedlock, single parents, abortions and much much more are consequences of moral relativism saying it is “more accepted.”

hawkdriver on February 17, 2009 at 9:22 PM

I don’t think this will reflect badly on the Governor. Bristol is an adult and her statements and opinions are her own, not her mother’s. Also, there are too many instances of Presidents’ (and Presidential candidates’) children who did not reflect well on their parents. George Washington’s stepson was a disappointment. Lincoln’s younger sons were terrors who disrupted meetings. Before abstaining from the bottle, George Walker was not exactly Perfect Child for G.H.W. Bush. And does anyone remember Ron Reagan, Jr.?
Just saying.

When you engage in sexual activities you had better be prepared to spend the next 19 years raising your baby. It is a parents responsibility to teach these simple facts to our offspring.

Territorial imperative. This isn’t rocket science. They want to conquer the world, and impose their religion on all. Is this that difficult to imagine? The US still has its own needs in mind, but it left behind Manifest Destiny a loooong time ago. Yes, we dabble in nation-building. So far, our key project, Iraq, has turned out to be a success. The people there are more free than they EVER were under the Ba’athists. It’s come at a cost, but bringing freedom to any nation is always pricey, particularly in blood. This nation wasn’t freed by negotiation. Ireland didn’t gain independence through the UN. Kosovo isn’t where it is because of committee meetings.

MadisonConservative on February 17, 2009 at 10:16 PM

I’ll tell you what also. You’re no Conservative and you’re no Christian. You sound more like a leftist Moby trying to put down Palin. I don’t know of any Christian person who’s called someone a NEOCON. And I’ll tell you something else. I’m glad I’m not one of your kids growing up in your so-called Christian home. You talk about disciplining them comparing it to torture? You’re an idiot if you can’t use more reason than belt on children. Lazy, intellectually bankrupt approach to parenting. Maybe your kids should be taken away from you.

hawkdriver on February 17, 2009 at 10:10 PM

I’m one of the few conservatives remaining A.B. (after bush). Do you agree with Bush’s economic policy? What about foreign policy? Did you vote McCain? Yes’s are liberal, no’s are conservative. And you have no grounds to question my Christian faith.

I never use belt OR reason. Big wooden paddle with splinters is the weapon of choice. You’re never too old for it (up to 18). It works; my kids are like soldiers. Kids were better disciplined when more parents did this, and schools were allowed to do it.

The Dean on February 17, 2009 at 10:18 PM

Homemade rockets Dean?

Cut and Paste from Global Security dor org.

“The year 2008 saw a dramatic increase in the extent of HAMAS rocket fire and mortar attacks on Israel, with a total of 3,278 rockets and mortar shells landing in Israeli territory (1,750 rockets and 1,528 mortar shells). These numbers are double those of 2007 and 2006, years which marked a five-fold increase over prior years. There was also a significant increase in the number of Israeli residents exposed to rocket fire. Prior to 2008, the city of Sderot (about 20,000 residents) as well as villages around the Gaza Strip were the main targets of rocket fire and mortar shelling. In 2008, the cities of Ashkelon and Netivot came under attack by Grad artillery rockets with a range of about 20 kilometers. Later, during Operation Cast Lead, Ashdod, Beersheba, and other cities were attacked by a previously un-identified rocket with a range of 40 kilometers from the Gaza Strip. This rocket created a new reality in which nearly one million Israeli residents [about 15 percent of the entire population] were at risk.”

Home made rockets indeed. People use rhetorical slight of hand in propaganda all the time.

What did you expect from a 17 year old?

I expect the parents of a minor to step in and tell her she need not give a national interview which is clearly set up for ratings and “gotcha” moments.

dcwvu on February 17, 2009 at 10:10 AM

Uh, guys-she’s 18 (that means not a minor) and the interview was her idea. The second half of this interivew is being broacast tonight, BTW.

Israel kills more people in five minutes of attacks than a month of Palestinian strike. Plus they aren’t completely without fault for getting attacked, as they are constantly expanding their settlements into even more Palestinian land. You wouldn’t like it if I took your home.

Do you agree with Bush’s economic policy? Mostly.
What about foreign policy? Completely

Yes’s are liberal, (Why)

Because Republican policy under Bush isn’t consistent with the Constitution and the principles on which our nation was founded. Conservative means smaller government and restrained federal power.

Answer this one question truthfully. Do you believe Israel has the right to exist as a state? It’s a yes or no answer and I don’t want an essay.

Bush was more liberal than I would have cared for but he defended us for 7 years and kept a strong economy for 5. I guess this Christian isn’t driven to hate the President like you are when I don’t get things completely my way.

Ron Paul would be an isolationist nightmare and because of that do far worse on the economy. He hates his own military.

Okay, you won’t comment about your rocket generalization. You’re pwned. Got it. Okay on the secong part, I’d be upset if I were an Israeli and someone invaded my home.

“The history of the proposed modern Palestinian state, which is expected to be formed from the territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, began with the British Mandate of Palestine. From Sept. 29, 1923, until May 14, 1948, Britain controlled the region, but by 1947, Britain had appealed to the UN to solve the complex problem of competing Palestinian and Jewish claims to the land. In Aug. 1947, the UN proposed dividing Palestine into a Jewish state, an Arab state, and a small international zone. Arabs rejected the idea. As soon as Britain pulled out of Palestine in 1948, neighboring Arab nations invaded, intent on crushing the newly declared State of Israel. Israel emerged victorious, affirming its sovereignty. The remaining areas of Palestine were divided between Transjordan (now Jordan), which annexed the West Bank, and Egypt, which gained control of the Gaza Strip.”
