Transcript shows Burris deliberately evaded truth about Blago brother
posted at 10:55 am on February 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Roland Burris says the reason that he never mentioned the demand for $10,000 from Rod Blagojevich’s brother Robert to the Illinois legislature is because they never asked him about it. Mark Brown at the Chicago Sun-Times begs to differ, and he has the transcript to prove it. In his testimony, Burris had plenty of opportunity to spill the beans — and instead chose to remain silent.
Here are all the questions asked which should have prompted Burris to reveal the demand (emphases mine):
Rep. Jim Durkin: “Did you talk to any members of the governor’s staff or anyone closely related to the governor, including family members or any lobbyists connected with him, including, let me throw out some names — John Harris, Rob Blagojevich, Doug Scofield, Bob Greenleaf, Lon Monk, John Wyma? Did you talk to anybody . . . associated with the governor about your desire to seek the appointment prior to the governor’s arrest?”
Durkin: “I guess the point is I was trying to ask: Did you speak to anybody who was on the governor’s staff prior to the governor’s arrest or anybody, any of those individuals or anybody who is closely related to the governor?”
Rep. Jill Tracy: “You said that you had visited friends perhaps in September of ’08 or July of ’08 concerning a desire to perhaps be appointed as a senator if our president-elect was elected. And could you give me the names of those friends?”
Tracy: “But I think I earlier heard you today testify that in September ’08 or perhaps as early as July ’08, you had visited with some friends about your desire to seek the seat.”
Tracy: “And I just was wondering who those friends were.”
Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie, the committee chairman: “Is that when you talked about your interest with Lon Monk? I think that –”
Tracy: “Was it Lon Monk, was that the extent of it was Lon Monk?
Tracy: “So you don’t recall that there was anybody else besides Lon Monk that you expressed an interest to at that point?”
Tracy: “Is there anybody that comes to mind in that light that you can –”
Read Brown’s column for Burris’ responses. Not only did the panel give Burris at least nine oppportunities to name Robert Blagojevich and his $10K demand, Durkin specifically asked Burris about the impeached governor’s brother. Burris never acknowleged it, nor did he reveal the contact, even though it went directly to the heart of the pay-for-play scandal. If that’s not perjury, it’s at least obstruction of justice.
Now Illinois Democrats wonder whether they should give Burris the heave-ho:
Several Democratic lawmakers from Illinois said Monday that they were troubled by revelations about Roland W. Burris, the state’s newest senator and a fellow Democrat. And at least one called for Mr. Burris to come before the state legislature and explain himself.
“We all have a lot of questions,” State Representative Jack D. Franks said. “He wasn’t forthcoming, and that’s the bottom line. I feel betrayed. The real problem here is the question of trust for the citizens of Illinois. We were supposed to rise to the occasion and, again, Illinois becomes the laughingstock for the nation.”
Tommy Christopher notes that even Keith Olbermann threw Burris under the bus last night with the revelation about being explicitly asked about Robert Blagojevich at the hearing. Will Harry Reid take the hint?

I hear on the radio that our (Illinois) States Attorney, Lisa Madigan (D), is to look into this. This one is going to require a lot of popcorn. I will be curious which Democrats will want to run for the Senate seat when the Governorship is up for election?
I see a Rebuplican taking over Obama’s seat. I never thought I would say that a year ago.

In other news, Compean and Ramos have been released.

That intital Burris press conference was one of the most pathetic showings I have ever seen. It was so bad that it was embarrassing to even watch. Burris is too stupid to even be the treasurer for a high school student council.

I see it as re-breaking a badly set bone. Sure, it hurts, but in the long run you are better off. We are going to go through some really painful times before we can possibly get a decent government, I’m afraid.

The question to ask the citizens of Illinios…. is this the best you can do?
workingforpigs on February 17, 2009 at 11:10 AM
How do you get decent people to run?
My idea:
1) Unlimited and unrestricted campaign donations with instant disclosure.
2) All donations verified to real and legal citizens (i.e., not like what Obama did).
3) Out of power campaigns can pay candidates a salary equal to the office they are running for (i.e., the opposing candidate can be a full-time politician too).

That would be great. Chances are that the person would be as dirty as the rest and this whole problem would just start up again. It would be fitting – the idiot messiah’s Senate seat would be death for all Illinois Dems who touch it.
If we can’t have decent people in our government, at least we can have some entertainment. And every Dem shown the door is one small step back to national sanity.

REMEMBER THIS TOO:
How ironic this new revelation comes 3 days AFTER the signing of Porkulus!?!?!
Burris could easily be seen as the 60th vote. This affidavit has been around for more at least 10 days but its “revelations” are JUST NOW being made known.

Burris’s version of “didn’t ask, didn’t tell”. Our politicians are children in a playground of make-believe. Is this a distraction from something darker?
Ris4victory on February 17, 2009 at 11:15 AM
A Chicago politician lied and you call that news. It would be news if he didn’t.
mchristian on February 17, 2009 at 11:16 AM
How do you get decent people to run?
A salary based on the median income of a family of four, a benefits plan comparable to that offered by a fortune 500 company mid-level employee, and an office which consists of a cube in a cube farm of your fellow legislators.

I am sure that the press will spin this into some racist agenda by the Republicans. We will hear how the pious black man was never asked the “correct question” which he would have gladly answered. It’s the Republicans’ fault for not properly investigating him and since he is in power now we should just forget about the rule of law or possible corruption.
I was trying to use sarcasm in this post, but came to the realization that I am probably right. That’s just sad. :(

search4truth on February 17, 2009 at 11:21 AM
That was his defense at his press conference, which by the way was the most entertaining thing I have watched on TV in a long time. He never really lied in the sense of providing a false answer. If anything, it was a lie of omission.

1. OK, but all donations must be disclosed, even $5 ones.
2. Definitely. It is the law now, but nobody follows it, so not sure how to enforce it.
3. I don’t care how much someone running makes, I care how much a government employee does. They should get a salary that covers their needs in their home district, and should live in a paid room in DC instead of buying a mansion. There should be no incentive to create a career out of being in congress. There should not be a pension for members of congress – only presidents (who should not plan for a career after their powerful job) and justices (who are appointed for life).
4. No comingling of funds between donations and candidate’s own bank account.
5. No family members on the payroll.
6. All contributions to a candidate or congressman are disclosed annually.
7. Ban lobbying (good luck with that)
Vashta.Nerada on February 17, 2009 at 11:26 AM
I’m sure before it’s done it will become the latest excuse for liberals to accuse other people of racism to avoid the real issue.

Also, a big part of his argument is that all him and Rob talked about was fundraising. I do not believe he has admitted that the senate seat came up at all in that discussion. Hopefully if/when we hear the tapes this will all be sorted out.

Saturday afternnon I was in the Loop with my wife and as we walked past WLS-TV’s newsroom window front, the overhead scrolling banner was lit up with the headline about this admission from Burris. A couple near us looked at it and said, “who cares?” The resignation on the part of the people in this town says it all. We’ll never get this place cleaned up. Now these a**clowns are running Washington.

Willie Tyler (lawyer): “Everything we’ve done is transparent.”
Lester (Burris): “Transparent!”

1) I left that part off…Disclose immediately.
5) If it is not taxpayer money, I see no issue with having family on the campaign.
6) Redundant with (1) Disclosre of donation is within days. Annual statements\tax filings of the entity should be publically available.
7) This is going down the path of McCain-Feingold. Lobbying is protected under the consitution. The ONLY ethics and lobbying reform that will work is a smaller government.
WashJeff on February 17, 2009 at 11:37 AM
If Burris is charged with perjury etc. what are the chances that he will start singing?
The Feds go to both Blago and Burris to tell them, that the first one to start singing gets a deal. But only the first one.
MarkTheGreat on February 17, 2009 at 11:37 AM
They may be able to make a CD box set out of all the singing that may occur in Illinois in the next year.
WashJeff on February 17, 2009 at 11:38 AM
I disagree with this. The problem of multiple small donations can be gotten around by declaring that cummulative totals are what matter. As soon as you give more than say $200, regardless of the number of individual donations, you get put on the list.
Small donors are subject to harrasment from their neighbors, customers, etc. as well.
MarkTheGreat on February 17, 2009 at 11:39 AM
That had to be a big let down for Blago. From half a million to 10,000 bucks… maybe.
When will we ever get to hear all the Blago tapes, or will they conveniently disappear?
joedoe on February 17, 2009 at 11:40 AM
Then how do citizens let their congressmen know when they are upset regarding a bill if there is no lobbying?

He is busy developing legislation that would require citizens to submit health records and finger prints in order to obtain a firearm. This way our government can tell us whether or not our brain is good enough to be afforded the second admendment. And this is covered in the constitution where?
Joe Caps on February 17, 2009 at 11:47 AM
Burris is the classic example of what you get when you promote seniority and party loyalty over merit and ability. Watching this amiable mediocrity offer his increasingly panicked explanations reminds me of a Twilight Zone Episode where some poor schlub gets granted a wish by a genie (or sells his soul to the Devil) for power, fame or riches, only to find out there’s some terrible catch that makes his sudden elevation worthless. After a lifetime of bureaucratic hackery, he finally got a brass ring that he never deserved, and now he knows it’s slipping away.
I can only hope he is able to stick around until the 2010 general election.

I see that as a benefit – the less money we have involved, the less opportunity for corruption. Representatives are supposed to be like jurists – they do their civic duty, and then go home. I would like term limits, but that is a shotgun solution. If we make it so that there is no benefit to a representative other than doing the will of their constituents, we would get better representation than we get now, with career politicians lining their own nest.

Burris is presently embarked on a “Listening Tour” in Illinois, which may mean he will be getting more than earful at each stop he makes.
My advice is that Burris should make a detour of sorts, making the first stop on his “tour” at the offices of U.S. District Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, who I am quite sure would be more than happy to listen to everything Burris has to say about his dealings with Rod Blagojevich and how he really got that Senate seat.
Afterward, Burris could do some listening of his own as to what his options are for cutting a deal in exchange for his testimony against Blagojevich, especially in light of the fact that he himself may be facing some jail time for his obvious act of perjury that he committed under oath.
Then, Burris can call a news conference at the location of his choice to announce his immediate resignation from the Senate.
After that, the only touring he can do will be under the guidance of the Witness Protection Program.
