The obligatory “Time names the top 25 blogs” post

Commenters in Headlines are miffed that no conservative sites were included this year. Huh? Sullivan’s right here.
Seriously, though, any list with Lileks on it — and dKos in the overrated file — can’t be all bad. My feeling here is the same as my feeling about Shuster’s new nightly “over to you, nutroots” segment: Why shouldn’t a lefty outlet skew towards lefty blogs? Tossing in a righty site in a conspicuous act of tokenism wouldn’t please anyone. And in fairness, TPM and HuffPo are defensible picks not only for their influence within big media but because they emphasize original reporting, a rarity among megasites on our side.
Still, though — no blogger embeds? Yon? Totten? Roggio? Hello?

I’m sorry, have they dedicated their lives to bashing Bush and railing against the war? They’ve just reported the situation from the ground? Pfft.

Read the entry on Sullivan:

So how does a conservative-free Top-25 list (of anything, really) gel with the logic pushing the Fairness Doctrine?
BobMbx on February 17, 2009 at 2:08 PM
Funny.
I like how they describe him as “reliably conservative” on military matters. It’s so astonishingly false.
Splunge on February 17, 2009 at 2:08 PM
If Time acknowledged that it was a left leaning magazine, I could accept your notion that we should allow the left to value the lefties. But Time presents this list in a non-political light. For instnace, it talks about Talking Points Memo as distinguished based on its tendency to engage its readers on fact finding missions.
RedSoxNation on February 17, 2009 at 2:09 PM
I am happy about the inclusion of James Lilek’s The Bleat.
Otherwise? Eh, not so much. I was pleased to see Kos as overrated. Like that’s some new relevation.
Andrew Sullivan being on the list? That makes my head explode.
Athena on February 17, 2009 at 2:09 PM
Overall, a rather predictable list. Except for the inclusion of Lileks, which was a pleasant surprise.
Slublog on February 17, 2009 at 2:10 PM
Time is ridiculous. Yaoni Sanchez of Generacion Y is actually a woman, so whoever researched these blogs didn’t do a very good job as they kept referring to the author as “he”. Sanchez’s blog is quite good, she exposes the real Cuba, not the left’s general version of the island as a paradise.

I remember when Time was a fairly objective and interesting mag.
That was a very long time ago.
Now, not so much.

Time magazine? It still exists? I thought only in dentist & dr’s offices-old back issues donated from the deceased estates of former patients.
Well, I’m sure it will go under soon.

As I have said to my gay conservative friend, I no longer read Sullivan because he’s too gay for me in every stereotypical sense of the word. Emotions over reason etc. His obsession with Obama is also quite interesting.
I do think though that he’s no less conservative than many people here who supported the Patriot Act and other government abuses.
There’s something ironic though about a magazine rating blogs. Somehow I get the feeling that a dinosaur has decided to offer his expert opinion on which modern mammal has a better chance of surviving.

TPM and Marshall is a superb blog albeit one with a liberal/left perspective that colors too much of their content. Some of the stuff Marshall says is just absurd.
But he’s been able to combine the best internet reporting with analysis of any other blog out there.
Conservatives need to emulate him if they could.

The Republican Party is all but a permanent minority party today. We have totally lost all representation in the Upper Midwest and New England, and demographic trends are decidedly NOT going in our direction. On top of it, we have the Messiah in office, poised to change the relationship of the citizen to the state in a way not done since the New Deal. Need I remind you that the Democrats controlled the House for 60 years following the New Deal. It’s over, and we have Bush — who completely abandoned fiscal conservatism — to thank for it. So yes, we don’t matter.
In more pleasant news… Those of you who like Red Eye will recognize Natali Del Conte, who initially became famous for reporting for TechCrunch for a few weeks, until she got a better job and bailed on them. Part of why she bailed was the mistreatment she suffered on their comment threads. I see TechCrunch is on the 5 overrated list. Oohrah Natali. :)

I have heard HotAir referenced on talk radio quite a bit, and apparently it matters since Obama is doing his best to silence it.
Also, quite often FOX covers a story not too long after it hits HotAir, so they are obviously reading HotAir, even if they aren’t giving it credit.
Sometimes you don’t realize the effect you are having.
Wasn’t that the point of It’s a Wonderful Life?

It’s like RedSoxNation said – if they were open and honest about their liberal bias that’d be one thing, but since they present themselves as a “centrist” magazine with “no political affiliation” then they should have equal right and left sites on there.
What’s really infuriating is (once again) the liberal tendancy to assume that everyone is a liberal. Since they think their outlook actually is centrist, they feel these are centrist blogs.

The one that really hurts is Crooks & Liars. I can see TPM and HuffPo, but Crooks & Liars?
Allahpundit on February 17, 2009 at 2:36 PM
Just more of the MSM setting the agenda.
Show the public what a ‘blog’ is, set the parameters about what a ‘blog’ is by showing (obviously leftist) examples, then the public begins to think of these as more mainstream and thinks automatically ‘left’ when the hear the word ‘blog’.
When a conservative blog makes waves, they are ridiculed as ‘marginal’ or ‘fringe’, even though the lefty blogs given the publicity are the ‘fringe’ sites.

Hog Wild on February 17, 2009 at 2:41 PM
The question dear AP, is not whether or not we matter….but what we need to do to make sure we matter.
Humorous posts aside, we really do need to try and matter, at least. Don’t you agree? Or is H.A. just “entertainment?” Is that your point?
Perhaps I’m just a little too optimistic for my own good?
I think of H.A. as a giant magnifying glass into the heart and soul of leftist corruption, with a side of deep fried humor. Correct me if I’m wrong.
OwlorNothing on February 17, 2009 at 2:42 PM
Why don’t conservative megasites emphasize original reporting then?
Disturb the Universe on February 17, 2009 at 2:45 PM
Exactly.
By the way you do matter. HA brings a lot of awareness. Both directly and through conduits like other bloggers who take what you’ve done to different audiences and even just readers like myself who spread the information and discussion to other people via message boards and forums.
I dont have the time knowledge or energy to parse through all the news and issues. HA is invaluable to me in that regard. It provides me a lot of ammunition to fight ideological battles or provide convincing evidence of my beliefs. When I do that, I might not convince all the time, but I do know for a fact that it inspires others. I’ve gotten many messages along the lines of “I’m so glad you said that!” “I feel the same but I’m afraid to say anything!”

What’s almost as funny as this list is their list of the Top 25 villians in the current economic problem. Only 1 elected Democrat politician on the entire list, and they seemed reluctant to even include him. That would be Billy Jeff. Of course they then list the evil Chimpy next up.
But there is absolutely no mention of Chris Dodd or Barney Frank. Also no mention of Jaime Gorelick.
