Report: Mossad using covert ops, targeting scientists to slow Iranian nukes

posted at 9:44 pm on February 16, 2009 by Allahpundit

Commenters are going to stamp their feet about the Telegraph spilling the beans, but come on. Did anyone not think this was going on? Mossad ops are a secret the way Israeli nukes are a “secret”: Invisible, yet a fact of geopolitical life.

Frankly, I wonder how many stories like this are fed to papers by our own side as disinformation, just to turn the crank on Tehran’s paranoia.

The most dramatic element of the “decapitation” programme is the planned assassination of top figures involved in Iran’s atomic operations…

A former CIA officer on Iran told The Daily Telegraph: “Disruption is designed to slow progress on the programme, done in such a way that they don’t realise what’s happening. You are never going to stop it

Mossad’s covert operations cover a range of activities. The former CIA operative revealed how Israeli and US intelligence co-operated with European companies working in Iran to obtain photographs and other confidential material about Iranian nuclear and missile sites…

Israel has also used front companies to infiltrate the Iranian purchasing network that the clerical regime uses to circumvent United Nations sanctions and obtain so-called “dual use” items – metals, valves, electronics, machinery – for its nuclear programme.

The businesses initially supply Iran with legitimate material, winning Tehran’s trust, and then start to deliver faulty or defective items that “poison” the country’s atomic activities.

If any of this sounds familiar, it’s because the Times dropped a bombshell to the same effect last month about Bush nixing an Israeli attack on Iran in favor of covert action aimed at sabotaging Iran’s nuke infrastructure. The Times piece was vague on details; this piece is a little less so. Exit question: If you can’t destroy the program by bumping people off, what’s to be gained by delaying it? Presumably it’s Israel’s way of buying time in hopes that the regime will fall and be replaced by a moderate Iranian government, but one of the linchpins of any grand bargain between the U.S. and Iran will be our guarantee that we won’t push for regime change in Tehran any longer. What chance will Iranian dissidents have of overthrowing the mullahs if they can’t count on western help? Seems like a longer-than-longshot to me, unless there’s reason to think the price of oil will fall so low that the country’s economy will implode. Rock on, global depression!

The problem though isnt it that the Iranians already have nuke plans via that Pakistani Sceintist ?

That is the scary thing is that Pakistan already has the bomb. And is far more unstable and close to Al Qaeda than Iran is.

No chance, but not because of help, or no help, from the West. The Iranian people hate, absolutely despise the mullahs, but then they go home, or wherever, and pray to Santa Claus, several times a day.

p.s. goes without saying that Ahmadinejad is just a puppet.

p.p.s. I did and will forever blame Jimmy Carter for enabling Ayatollah Khomeini to return to Iran. I would have had him killed in the West. He flew in a plane while he went home to take his country back to the 3-7th centuries.

Entelechy on February 16, 2009 at 9:56 PM

lol..you gotta love Mossad’s style in allowing it to get around that they are actively trying to play silly buggers with Iranian Nuke scientists. Basically what will happen now is that the Iranians will get even more paranoid about the security of its nuclear program and the Scientists involved in it and their loyalty to the regime. Let the purges begin, nothing slows down an enterprise faster than a paranoid security apparatus.

Disinformation FTW.

What’s to gain by not delaying it? If you think Obama’s about to launch an attack on Iran or even provide resources for one if we find out that the Islamic Republic has a nuke tomorrow, I’ve got a bridge to sell you. And Israel isn’t exactly in a position right now to take out nuclear capabilities if Iran obtains them. So delaying them until the situation/capabilities improve isn’t a bad idea.

Mossad’s goal may simply be to slow Iran’s nuke program for at least 4 years until a pro-Democracy, anti-terrorist candidate gets elected to the US presidency.

Crusty on February 16, 2009 at 10:21 PM

I do say, this Ahmadinejad is not a very kind or classy fellow. He seems to be in need of a shave and a bath. Not that I have personally smelled the creature in question, but there is something quite animalistic and primitive about his choice of vesture and his visage is rather 7th century.

Also, I have been informed by sources that his ideas are that of the 7th century prophet Muhammed. Muhammad was a blood-thirsty and vile man that had no common decency. He also had no respect for even his followers as can be witnessed by reading Islamic literature produced by Muhammad’s companions and biographers.

I hope someone stops this mad Ahmadinejad before ’tis too late for the world.

On the Global stage, once a country graduates to nuclear status that country will announce it’s power to the world via a Test. With Iran, and the know deficiencies on uranium, the question is not a matter of “When”, It is “Where” they will preform the 1st test.

tjexcite on February 16, 2009 at 11:10 PM

I heard an Israeli military captain hint at this last November. He couldn’t go into details but he mentioned how Israel was disrupting both the Iranians’ research supply lines (the example he gave was about centrifuges; the Israelis tricked them into buying centrifuges that were all defective) and personnel (mostly scientists).

Exit question: If you can’t destroy the program by bumping people off, what’s to be gained by delaying it?

At the time, they were watching to see how the US elections would turn out. Given the result, expect to see the Israelis (whoever wins the election over there right now — the Israeli public opinion has shifted so solidly to the right that even Livni & Kadima will likely move aggressively) pull the trigger on Iran with a rapid and massive series of coordinated airstrikes. They war-gamed this very attack last year in the opposite direction (twd Greece) and there were dozens (maybe hundreds, don’t recall the exact number) of attack and support aircraft involved.

Also, at the time, the same Israeli captain suggested that Ahmadinejad’s health has taken a downturn. So it’s possible that they are hoping for a change in leadership — one way or another — before the program is completed. I only mention this now because the other info I heard from him has apparently been confirmed by the Telegraph.

If the first tip was solid, then that gives more weight to the one about Ahmadinejad.

We’ll have to wait and see.

profitsbeard on February 16, 2009 at 10:39 PM

Their tea’s been fine. However, they have had a string of really unfortunate airplane flights.

I hear the weather is really bad for Iranian nuke scientists to fly in. ;-)

Harpazo on February 16, 2009 at 11:16 PM

Frankly, I wonder how many stories like this are fed to papers by our own side as disinformation, just to turn the crank on Tehran’s paranoia.

The problem with this line of thinking is that once goalposts are moved without action, paranoia will dissipate. Some other kind of motivation will then fill the paranoia vacuum.

Another point, assuming that this is a case of disinformation and assuming Iran becomes paranoid about this; time will have to play itself out. I was of the understanding that time is not really to our advantage. I don’t know if making such assumptions benefits the cause of Iran-nuke prevention.

anuts on February 16, 2009 at 11:26 PM

If you can’t destroy the program by bumping people off, what’s to be gained by delaying it?

Gaining more intelligence to determine EXACTLY what they’re dealing with. Israel stood a slim chance at getting Bush’s support for an offensive to take out the facility at Natanz. with Obama, it will take a lot more evidence, like say the presence of a nuclear weapon, before Israel gets our support for them to launch an offensive. They most certainly have the capability; remember the nuclear facility in Syria in 2007? But they won’t go it without our government’s blessing, which may never come.

RMCS_USN on February 16, 2009 at 11:32 PM

But they won’t go it without our government’s blessing

Seems like a longer-than-longshot to me, unless there’s reason to think the price of oil will fall so low that the country’s economy will implode.

Given that this is likely going to be an inflationary depression, I doubt it will be the price of oil that precipitates that.

spmat on February 16, 2009 at 11:40 PM

Israel could solve this whole thing if they simply donated the nuclear material to Iran that the mullahs so desperately want.

Ya know, from about 20,000 feet.

There are opportunities to get good information out of there. Underground opposition groups, many of ethnic based, can be worked with. There are Russians in there and some can be approached. Some of the old Soviet republics bordering Iran are not unfriendly to Israel.

What are they are not using are any local Jews or Bahais, whose HQ is in Haifa. The Iranians have put Jews on trial for spying and now they are doing it to Bahais. That’s just pure old fashioned religious persecution.

CrusaderPatriot on February 17, 2009 at 12:31 AM

I hope the Israelis are as successful with their Trojan Horse plan as we were with it at the end of the cold war. While Reagan was President, he OK’d the “transfer” of hardware and software for a Soviet natural gas pipeline in Siberia. The software “obtained” by the Soviets had hidden computer code that caused the pipeline to malfunction and explode. If you want the full story, go here:

http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=829

I guess with Iran, we want a non-explosion, but you get the gist.

Lawbear on February 17, 2009 at 12:32 AM

I hope the Israelis have as much success with their Trojan Horse plan as we did at the end of the cold war. During Reagan’s presidency, the U.S. “allowed” the Soviets to obtain industrial parts and software for a natural gas pipeline. The software had hidden code that caused the pipeline to malfunction and go BOOM! The full details of the story are here: http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=829

In the case of Iran, the Israelis (and we) want a non-explosion, but the sabotage is accomplished similarly.

Lawbear on February 17, 2009 at 12:42 AM

I hope the Mossad pops their heads like ripe pumpkins. I hope that no one will work for the Iranians for fear of their car exploding. A few plant accidents, radiation leaks, toxic spills, etc. Its hard to concentrate on your work with a Geiger counter screaming in your ear.

I wonder if Feinstein didn’t deliberately leak the Predator base info, since she already knew about them giving up the Swat area.

That legitimizes American airstrikes under the Geneva Convention. Hell, it even legitimizes ground forces going in.

Now how can America complain about Israel hitting Iran if we are doing the exact same thing?

Bomb bomb bomb – let’s bomb Iran.

platypus on February 17, 2009 at 12:48 AM

One other thing – since Israel has been selling bad parts to Iran, who’s to say that Pakistan hasn’t had the same thing done to it? They can’t test, lest they scare India into war (which India cannot lose).

Pakistan is not as much of a threat as they would like to pretend, nukes notwithstanding. Their maintenance quality level is nowhere near ours.

platypus on February 17, 2009 at 12:51 AM

Obama and Rahm are doing the same thing to us. It’s a no brainer.

Covert operations have been successful since the Trojan Horse.

Putin on February 17, 2009 at 1:41 AM

Mossad needs to “remove” the top religious/poli’s. This, tied to American support of the Iranian people, would collapse that 8th century gov, and usher the mostly young adult population of Iran into modern day.

The first reaction I had when I saw the headline was “Well I certainly hope so”.

However I really wish that the UK Tele would not have published this story. Publishing anything about covert opps can lead to good guys being killed, either sooner or later.

Chuck Norton on February 17, 2009 at 5:56 AM

If Iran is destroyed, the nutjobs around the world can claim both victimization and a moral victory.

If Iran implodes, as well as losing the fight for the destruction of Israel, they also lose face around the world of nutjobs.

Mossad may be a doing the best thing here – if it works.

OldEnglish on February 17, 2009 at 7:07 AM

And yet it from all one reads and hears is that Iran is progressing nicely to build it’s nuclear weapons.

The intelligence community spends more time spinning out James Bond tales of covert spy action, than actually doing any. After all, they do have to justify their huge budgets and lack of success.

albill on February 17, 2009 at 7:11 AM

Why limit the assassinations to nuclear scientists? Mossad along with CIA, MI5 should take apart Iran’s Islamic regime covertly. Knock off the mullahs and Ahmadinejad and make it look like Sunni muslim groups/states like Al Qaeda/Saudi Arabia were behind it.

Islam has a built-in self-destruct mechanism: sectarianism. If there’s anything muslims love more than killing us infidels is killing each other. If they’re too busy looking over their shoulder for attacks from other muslims, its less time they have to spend trying to come after us. :)
