Report: FCC staff meeting with Waxman aides about bringing back Fairness?

Too juicy not to post, too sketchy to take very seriously. It’s the Prowler, guys. Caveat emptor.
Senior FCC staff working for acting Federal Communications Commissioner Michael Copps held meetings last week with policy and legislative advisers to House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman to discuss ways the committee can create openings for the FCC to put in place a form of the “Fairness Doctrine” without actually calling it such.
Waxman is also interested, say sources, in looking at how the Internet is being used for content and free speech purposes. “It’s all about diversity in media,” says a House Energy staffer, familiar with the meetings. “Does one radio station or one station group control four of the five most powerful outlets in one community? Do four stations in one region carry Rush Limbaugh, and nothing else during the same time slot? Does one heavily trafficked Internet site present one side of an issue and not link to sites that present alternative views? These are some of the questions the chairman is thinking about right now, and we are going to have an FCC that will finally have the people in place to answer them.”…
“This isn’t just about Limbaugh or a local radio host most of us haven’t heard about,” says Democrat committee member. “The FCC and state and local governments also have oversight over the Internet lines and the cable and telecom companies that operate them. We want to get alternative views on radio and TV, but we also want to makes sure those alternative views are read, heard and seen online, which is becoming increasingly video and audio driven. Thanks to the stimulus package, we’ve established that broadband networks — the Internet — are critical, national infrastructure. We think that gives us an opening to look at what runs over that critical infrastructure.
Unusually menacing, fluidly articulate quotes from anonymous Democrats are a hallmark of Prowler items, especially those having to do with the Fairness Doctrine, but there’s a grain of plausibility here. FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell, a Bush appointee, warned last summer that if the left took a run at bringing back Fairness, the ‘Net would be on their radar. The basic line of attack described in the quote, i.e. “localism,” is also familiar as a favored lefty strategy for sneaking in Fairness without calling it Fairness. The Center for American Progress hailed it in its 2007 report on how to “reform” talk radio and Boehner sent a letter to the FCC opposing it last year (scroll down to the last update). The one bit of good news? The public’s enthusiasm for reinstituting the doctrine has cooled since last year, according to a new poll from Rasmussen. A near-majority now oppose it, marking a sharp shift in just six months. I don’t know how to explain that except to chalk it up to the public’s wariness of one-party control, but at least we stand a chance of defeating it if The One lurches in this direction.
Exit question: If the FCC imposes it on the Net, which lefty should Hot Air hire to ensure “Fairness”?

The same Waxman who never bothered to investigate CDR Financial products because they happen to be in his district. By the way CDR is the company that helped bring down Richardson, bankrupt Jefferson county Alabama, and bring corruption and poverty wherever they went.

You’ll need a lefty who’s always depressed about the Democrats in the present if things aren’t going well at the moment, and pessimistic about the future prospects of the Democratic Party if things are going well at the time. Ya know. Balance.

Since there are so many radio stations, it couldn’t be radio they are talking about. With 5 khz spacing, there is a near limitless supply of channels.
tarpon on February 16, 2009 at 4:48 PM
Gee, that’s a real problem isn’t it? How could anyone be expected to know that they could find dozens, hundreds, thousands, and in some cases, millions of sites with alternative views simply by doing a Google search? But I guess we can’t expect internet users to accept any personal responsibility for informing themselves, right? That’s not the Dim way. Big Daddy Government should do all our thinking for us.
And who gets to decide which “alternative view” sites must be linked to from that “heavily trafficked Internet site”? Since ad revenue is linked to number of hits, there will be lots and lots of site owners who want in on that action. I can see the lawsuits coming now . . . Hey, that’s probably why the Dims like this idea. It creates jobs for one of their primary special interest groups: lawyers.
Idiots.

Who’s going to tell Hollywood scripwriters to keep their scripts fair and balanced? How about some scripts that don’t portray businessmen and women and greedy, crass, scoundrels? How about some scripts that don’t portray the military as conspiracy driven fascists? How about some scripts that don’t portray white males as fat overbearing buffoons? How about some sitcoms that don’t glorify the gay lifestyle? How about some scripts extoling family values?
Until they can figure out how to do that, I don’t want to hear anything about any Fairness Doctrine or whatever else they want to disguise it as.
By the way, I’m tired of hearing the excuse for the Fairness Doctrine being the “use of the public airways”. What about TV? What about magazine and newspaper deliveries” Are they not delivered on the “public roadways?”
Just leave it alone, Democrats. You may regret it.

Which lefty? I’d suggest asking homeless people until you find one that voted for Uh-bama. Which will likely be the first one with the word “vote” in their answer. He’ll likely be the most informed of all lefties, and you will have the distinction of providing more new jobs to the economy than Obamessiah’s Porkulus Bill.
Failing that, get Rachael Madcow. She’s so flamingly liberal that only the more hardened fridge lefty will take her seriously. Plus, it would only take a couple of sentences per month to balance against the rest of your normal content. :)

hawkdriver on February 16, 2009 at 5:38 PM
One major difference between the right and the left is that the left is constantly in court, suing their agenda into the law.
Doesn’t matter who wins the elections when the left can still lawyer up and sue.
When will conservatives start fighting fire with fire? Will it take the reinstatement of the FD or a gun ban to finally get conservatives to lawyer up? Or would “clogging up the courts,” hiring “sharks,” and filing “frivolous” lawsuits be beneath us?
The fact that the left has a plethora of legal organizations to take up this and that case free of charge scares me. Who will defend the conservatives?

I think your idea sucks, sorry. DTMH does not make reasoned, intelligent or even well thought out arguments. onlineanalyst on February 16, 2009 at 7:17 PM
The main problem is that, in the eyes of most of the lefties, the MSM leans right and talk radio leans extremely far right. I’ve spoken to people that I consider to be quite intelligent and they were honestly convinced that the media has been unfair and overly critical of President Obama the past few months.
They’d happily apply the fairness doctrine to the networks if it meant the networks moved further left.

You are all missing how they will spin this…..
Oslime-a will insist there will be no reason to apply the fairness doctrine to free television because it is already nonpartisan. Liberal thought is the norm and needs no counter voice. The extremists are the conservatives and therefore need the extreme left view countering it. Meanwhile, while we fight the extremists on talk radio, Oslime-a and his media whores will be getting support for their Marxist agenda by couching it as “normal and reasonable” through the media outlets that they control.
They have learned that trying to take all freedoms at once creates an uproar so basically, the Marxists are taking our freedoms one little slice at a time and the idiotic American public welcomes it.

Agree . . . and if they try ignore their rules. Use underground radio or any other means to overcome these leftists and their attempts to eliminate our constitutional rights. This is getting serious folks.

We’ve lost one huge battle because of three TRAITORS, now the Messaih is after our last voice. Talk Radio is Conservatives final toe hold, our final chance to get the message out…
We, the American People, who called, wrote, e-maild, called friends, sent urgent posts to all that would listen, FAILED! Or Congressmen and Senators ignored the will of the people…
So here they come again, stealing our freedoms. Will we lose again? Will we let our one last voice go silent? To what lenghts are we willing to go? Will we finaly as a people stand against and march and demonstrate? Will Conservatives, Rino’s. Moderates, Centerists come together? Will we stand united to fight back against this agression against the Constitution? Or, as we just did, roll over and allow America to slide further into the Socialist black hole?
The line is drawn in the sand… It’s not just money anymore… It’s the 1st Ammendment, it’s The Constitution! We can not afford to lose this comming battle. Our gun rights are next in line should talk radio fall… When is enough, enough?
I believe as Talk Radio goes, so goes our last hope of regaining control over the radical left, the hate America crowd, the Messiah and his cult followers. We better do MORE then we did to stop the Porkulous Bill… We had better be ready for the fight of our generation.
For those of you who have doubted me and my alarmist view in the past… I’m waiting for my apology. The day IS HERE. The radical are now at the door to the Constitution.
Who is ready to fight? Who has now seen the light? No longer is it IF they will kill our voice, it’s WHEN.

The educational system has succeeded in creating a Nanny State of whiners, instead of a nation united winners.
The proponents of this legislation have led such a sheltered life they just cannot handle the truth and have been programmed that only the government message is the truth.
Let them live in a country wherein the media is controlled by the government and after two months they will become mindless wonders.
