Did Burris get caught on Blago tapes?
posted at 10:35 am on February 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Federal investigators now want to talk with Roland Burris, the man appointed to the Senate by disgraced and impeached Governor Rod Blagojevich in Illinois. According to Burris’ lawyers, the wiretaps may have caught Burris chatting about the Senate opening with Blagojevich or his staff. Burris now has to fend off calls for his resignation by the legislature that has already expelled Blagojevich:
Burris’ evolving explanation of what happened took another twist when he said federal investigators want to talk about his appointment to the Senate seat that Blagojevich was charged with trying to sell.
“What I understand is some of the agents have reached out to my lawyers,” Burris said, adding “they want to meet with me.”
Burris attorney Timothy Wright acknowledged Burris may be on a covert recording in the Blagojevich investigation but declined to explain the senator’s comment about meeting with federal agents, saying “the FBI has not come to us and they’re not asking us for anything.”
Burris, a former attorney general, alternately looked nervous and feisty at a hastily arranged news conference in Chicago just a day before he was to embark on a statewide listening tour to meet the constituents he has represented for about a month. At times, Burris and his lawyer gave contradictory answers or no answers when pressed on whether he told the whole truth about his role.
Whoops! Blago insisted that Burris was clean, although Illinois had little choice but to certify him in any case. Now Burris may have starred in one or more of the conversations the feds have on tape, which means that the little pas de deux Burris played with the legislature makes it more interesting. If Burris lied under oath, then the taped conversations could prove it.
Republicans in Illinois have already called for Burris to resign his seat and allow new Governor Pat Quinn to name a cleaner Senator to replace him. They’ve also demanded an investigation in Illinois into potential perjury charges:
Illinois Republicans called Sunday for a perjury investigation of Sen. Roland W. Burris (D), who declared that he did not try to mislead state lawmakers about his contacts with associates of former governor Rod Blagojevich.
“I can’t believe anything that’s coming from Mr. Burris at this point,” said state Rep. Jim Durkin (R). He described Burris’s version of his contacts with Blagojevich insiders as a “continuously changing story.”
“I think it would be in the best interest of the state if he resigned,” Durkin said the day after news broke that Burris had filed an affidavit contradicting two earlier statements he made under oath.
Perjury is notoriously difficult to prove in court, but not impossible. The Illinois legislature can also hold Burris in contempt, which will weaken him politically but won’t disqualify him from the Senate. A significant FBI probe might make his position untenable anyway, as Harry Reid and Dick Durbin’s initial reluctance to seat Burris has been justified. Reid and Durbin pointedly avoided any statements of support yesterday, with their offices saying that they would be looking at Burris’ changing statements very carefully to determine whether to take any action.
Really, this fruit is so low-hanging for Reid that it practically puts a divot in the ground. Reid could make himself look like a crusader by forcing Burris out, through a fast Ethics Committee probe, and put the stench of Blagojevich behind the Democrats for good. Will he? I doubt that Reid has the guts to face down the Congressional Black Caucus, which will almost certainly object to the removal of the only African-American in the Senate.

I would just like to know is there any way this could force a new vote on porkzilla? and if not then ehh what do you expect he’s from Il.

Wait. Are you telling me the guy appointed to a senate seat by a guy who just got booted out of office, might possibly be corrupt?
Unfathomable.
lorien1973 on February 16, 2009 at 10:37 AM
it doesn’t matter as much now, his appointment was allowed because anything that would embarrass the One during coronation week had to go away. Of secondary importance was to prevent a special election that the GOP might win, now we are stuck with a crazy perjurer in the senate courtesy of the Democratic party. This man will not go away and our republic will be further disgraced.

President Obama on February 16, 2009 at 10:38 AM
This is nearly the same type of situation Bill Clinton found himself in, which led to his impeachment proceedings. It’s not so much what he did or didn’t do…the actual “action” he took…It’s that he LIED about it.
If Burris lied, to anyone “official”, he should be prosecuted for it. I would…you would…we all would.
Fair is fair.
Suck it up.

When I read the story of the Burris affidavit (admitting to having had a conversation with Rob B. about a $10k payoff), my first thought was that Burris must be worried that the feds have his conversation with Rob on one of the audiotapes. Burris is such a moron. You’d think a guy who was once a lawyer would have had enough sense to give himself some cover when he testified, just in case there was something on the tapes. But sadly, I agree that his skin color is likely to protect him from the consequences of his stupidity and dishonesty, an occurrence that’s becoming all too predictable in this country.

That would certainly have been nice, but it was never really going to happen. This is a case of the Chicago Machine Dems vs. the Illinois Dems. Last thing either group wanted was an actual *election*. It’s like a family squabbling over which branch gets the larger share of an inheritance – last thing they want is for another family to get a piece of the action.
The Illinois Repubs barely count, they’re too busy in-fighting and ass-covering to put up a candidate… You *DO* remember how Obama got into the Senate in the first place, right? Alan Keyes ring any bells?
What this does is to give the Dems in Illinois (Chicago and State) two years to figure out who succeeds Burris, and gives the Repubs two years to figure out which way they want to go…
And, in the meantime, Burris gets a better pension than he would have gotten as a former Illinois Attorney General.

To me, this takes things well beyond laughing at Chicago politics. When are the people of Illinois going to say, “Enough!” The state is now so politically battered it looks like Rocky answering the bell for the 15th round. Illinois residents need to get behind that U.S. Representative from Peoria.
Speaking of scandal. I hear today that Senator Dodd is coming out soon with a book on the financial crisis. What’s next? Murtha coming out with a book criticizing Obama’s bill for its pork?

All we can hope is Burris can keep himself clean until he gets through the Democratic primary. This coming out now is a gift to the Democrats, because last I saw Burris had at least a good shot at withstanding primary challenge. If this gets louder, that chance gets smaller, and Mark Kirk has the best shot running against Burris than he has against anyone else.

Merry Fitzmas in February?
If Fitz has Burris on tape, and can get an indictment, Burris will probably get expelled from the Senate, but his vote on the Porkulus will probably still count.
Interesting that the man bringing this up is State Rep. Jim Durkin. He was the Republican opponent of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin in the 2004 election. Understandably, Illinois voters could have been confused between DurBin and DurKin, and voted for Tweedle Dee over Tweedle Dum.
But if Burris goes down in flames with Blago, and Pat Quinn appoints yet ANOTHER successor to the Great One Himself, Jim DurKin might be able to win the seat in 2010…

I’m wondering how long it will take before Burris plays the race card. It would definitely silence the Dems- especially now Governor Quinn and Illinois AG Lisa Madigan- and certainly Senators Reid and Durbin. Apparently, the Illinois Dem majority leader, Barabara Flynn Currie, kept the Burris revised affidavit secret until the press uncovered it. Amazingly, Burris is totally oblivious to any kind of shame or embarrassment. Even though he’s a nothing more than a nondescript politician who quickly faded from the public eye and memory, he looks on himself as some kind of racial pioneer who blazed the trail for the likes of Obama. You gotta give him credit, though. He’s a firm believer in “the best defense is a good offense”.
