Collins: Other Republicans told me they wished they could have voted for the stimulus
posted at 2:05 pm on February 16, 2009 by Allahpundit
Skip ahead to 1:45. Specter said the same thing this weekend and was met with utter incredulity by our commenters. I’m skeptical too, but not because I put it past most members of the Senate GOP caucus; if the leader of the party is willing to say they can’t be trusted, it’s safe to take him at his word. Rather, I just can’t figure out who the secret stimulus fans might be. See my analysis in the Specter post and feel free to offer theories.
The comic highlight here: Snowe’s invocation at 1:05 of the “original principles of the Republican party.” Which original GOP principle was it, I wonder, that calls for trillion-dollar Keynesian experiments in spending as a solution to recession? Note also how careful CBS was to include Collins’s salute to Margaret Chase Smith, who was “known for taking on her party.” The media’s Strange New Respect for these two ain’t that strange, is it?

Republicans, Democrats, who can tell the difference anymore?
Constitution1st on February 16, 2009 at 2:38 PM
And so, Collins ? There is a reason why they didn’t. Elections you know ? Even if there were others, that doesn’t give you a friggen excuse to vote for eat yourself !!!
Lelouch on February 16, 2009 at 2:39 PM
Looks like they are trying to cover the backs now. These people don’t have the answer to President Obama or anyone in Congress for their actions and votes, but their constituents at home. Based on the polls I have seen these people did not vote for what their constituents wanted, so the real question is will the GOP support candidates who run against them when they are up for reelection. That I think is going to be one or Mr. Steel big test.

She must be going back to the 19th Century, when the Republicans were the party of Hugh (but clean) Gubmint, advocating free land for farmers.

My Question: Will the RNC have the fortitude to push these RINO’s out come election time?
Paleoconservatarian on February 16, 2009 at 2:43 PM
Let’s see, all the Republican members of the House voted against the Porkulus and Sen. Specter says that his colleague who wanted to vote for it did not because he is up for election in the next cycle. Sounds like our elected representatives know what we think of their bill!

I am sure some might have told her they wished they could vote for a stimulus that would actually work and not this lard infested liberal wish list that won’t.

Having just read Ross Douthat I wouldn’t be at all surprised if she is somewhat sincere here. As Catymac mentioned already all three will be forced to claim they voted against this piece of garbage before they voted for it. I’m waiting for the idiot masses to realize there’s only a $13/pay relief headed their way while every bloated government program gets mass infusions of cash. There’s not enough voters coming away with new kitchens to reelect the brain dead politicians who thought this might make some difference.
msmveritas on February 16, 2009 at 2:43 PM
These three are cowards who were only out to save their own skins.
I had a football coach with a great line for unprincipled cowards: “All they want to do is win and walk with the girls.”
Well, these three to win and walk with Obama. Not different.
BuckeyeSam on February 16, 2009 at 2:43 PM
Even if they are telling the truth, what is the point? That they had the courage to flaunt their party’s principles to pass this train wreck? It is a dubious distinction to want to owe up to…
StubbleSpark on February 16, 2009 at 2:45 PM
Rush is right; Obama was going to get his stimulus package passed in one form or another. But for these 3 RINO’s the GOP would have made it a bit harder and maybe could have hegotiated a better deal. But we will never know, will we?

canditaylor68 on February 16, 2009 at 2:46 PM
Susan, maybe “they wished they could have voted for the stimulus,” but they made darn sure that that wish didn’t come true by not voting for it. On the other hand, you, Snow and Specter not only wished you could have vote for it, you voted for it!
In the senate they don’t count wishes, they count votes!

Why are these people still talking? Because they know how ticked off their voters are? They shouldn’t have voted for it and they know it. They’re scared. Whenever I actually have money to give again, it will be to a conservative who runs against Specter.
Where I live there’s a conservative running against our congressman. No one did last year and I think it was a shame. Finally I have someone to donate to from my own part of the state. Our current congressman is despicable, he should have ben ousted a long time ago. Down with RINOs and down with socialists.

Pathetic. THIS is what leads our nation?

Of Course they wanted to vote for this Bill who wouldn’t…well the majority of their constituents who they represent remember them Collins your constituents? And that’s why they didn’t vote for it because they so wished they could commit political suicide with you and the other two sellouts. These 3 must be getting a lot of hate mail. Trying the oldest Political ploy in the book trying to hide in a crowd that doesn’t exist- Non existent pro “Porkus Bill” backers.

Don’t be so sure. Reid and Pelosi reportedly removed (in their late-Thursday-night, behind-closed-doors, mark-up session) the portion of the bill requiring employers receiving “stimulus” money to use E-Verify to ensure that only Americans or legal residents get the jobs funded by the “stimulus.”
I can hardly wait until the YouTube videos of “stimulus”-funded public works projects start showing up on the net. There’ll be videos of lots of illegal aliens filling potholes or screwing bolts into bridges, only to drop their tools and run away as soon as they catch sight of the person with the camera. I just hope the tens of millions of unemployed Americans watching those videos appreciate how Obama and the Democrats made sure that illegal aliens would benefit from the Trillion-dollar plus tax bill we Americans (and are kids) are all going to have to pay.
AZCoyote on February 16, 2009 at 2:57 PM
A handful of other senators told them they supported the stimulus. And thousands of constituents opposed it. So they went with the handful?
Yeah, right, girls.
Wethal on February 16, 2009 at 2:58 PM
Maybe they wished they could vote for a stimulus bill – this ain’t it. It’s a liberal pork wish list. The two things really are (or at least should be) mutually exclusive.
The false choice of doing this bill or doing nothing has not been a lie from the jump. Nothing has ever really been on the table.
Calling her and the other 2 liars is like calling Hillary shrill, it’s just a fact of life.

“heartache”…. ???
That we either have three lying SOS in the GOP that will take the whole group down with them lest they stand on their OWN Maverickiness or that there may be a substantial amount of Liberals who infiltrated the GOP claiming to believe in fiscal conservative principals by either lying so as to force a Socialist Style Coup d’etat or weak, yellow lily, spineless good for-nothings who listen to polls and only do what the constituents want if the grassroots populace is smart enough to keep an eye on them because they’ll feed you lip service, then stab you in the back when you turnaround and look the other way?
Yea, heartache for sure! Clear the GOP out and reboot.
Sultry Beauty on February 16, 2009 at 3:05 PM
Did CBS brand New York senator Kirsten Gillibrand a maverick – for her pro NRA and objection to illegal alien stance- or was she considered just another traitor like Joe lieberman? I think it was the latter.
RMR on February 16, 2009 at 3:06 PM
And this proves exactly what, Ms. Collins? It wouldn’t be the first time a politician said one thing and did another. Frankly, I don’t care who said what behind closed doors. The only thing that matters to me is the actual vote. If you think you did something heroic, think again. You did the easy thing by voting with the rest of the chicken littles in DC. The heroic thing was to take a stand and vote against this socialist pork pie. You sold this great nation down the river for some media lovin’ and a pat on the head from the Marxist in Chief. Thanks.

I know one of the “Wish I could’ve voted for it”, and that would be Martinez of Fl. He waited until he was sure that he did not have to vote for it, then voted against it. The three remaining votes after 57 ayes were recorded were Brown(D OH), Bayh(D) and Gillibrand (D NY). Is the vote of anyone of these any doubt about? It was at this point that Martinez voted against it.
inspectorudy on February 16, 2009 at 3:15 PM
Look, folks. They are who they are: elected liberal GOP Senators.
So, oppose them politically and electorally in Maine and Pennsylvania, as part of a national conservative renewal in the GOP. Then respect the voters’ decisions.
As of now, a new conservative GOP Congressional Majority requires more than a simple majority in the House, and about 55 Senate seats to be effective.
Of course with hard work and a little luck that could really change in 2010.
Think about it, and be heard.

Take note those quoting Ross Douthat about these three, he’s an elitist RINO who probably agrees with what they did more than he disagrees. He’ll find a way to cover for them like AP feigns heartache that there may be others in the GOP that are willing to agree with Democratic Liberal Tax & Spend Old School Policies while he tells us we have no choice but to elect these very types of Republicans. Which is it, eh? Heartache or more of the same? You cannot have it both ways.
Sultry Beauty on February 16, 2009 at 3:19 PM
I don’t know that I can watch another of these. I’m a moderate Republican and am not going to change it based on what these three Senators have done. Yet, I’m a Republican because I support free enterprise and fiscal responsibility. I’m deeply embarrassed by the idiocy of what these three Senators have done. I will continue to defend to them for as long as it is at all feasible, but they can’t keep this behaviour up and expect even moderate Republican support.
thuja on February 16, 2009 at 3:22 PM

I bet the truth is that she wished she could have voted against it, but she put her reelection hopes before what’s best for the country. The same goes for the other two turncoats. It can’t be easy to keep your Senate seat in the Northeast if you’re a Republican who stood up to the liberal messiah.

I am not going to disagree with you on Douthat, I think the point that no one was making the case for payroll tax holiday or anything else because these three saw to it the whole crap sandwich got through virtually unscathed. I really think that all those who are looking for Obama to buy them a drank are going to be mighty unhappy when they see the $13 in the paycheck. If GOP had been loud about a payroll tax holiday it might rankle a bit against the $13/pay. I just think there is going to be a lot of disillusionment when people realize what they are getting out of this thing.

And I think this is the thing that The One and his budzos are missing – most of the people I know of who are, and have been, so taken with Obambi, are expecting someone to stroke them a check. That’s what they think a stimulus bill does – it makes a check for $300 magically appear in your mailbox. This one doesn’t even do that much – at $13 per pay day, it’ll take almost 24 paydays to come up with that same $300. It won’t be noticeable. It won’t be something people are waiting anxiously by their mailbox for.
