Obama administration no longer issuing denials on Fairness Doctrine

Remember when the Left laughed at conservatives’ concerns over the Fairness Doctrine? Barack Obama already said he opposed the reimposition of the FCC rule, they said. After all, Obama’s campaign gave this definitive statement in June 2008:
“Senator Obama does not support re-imposing the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters,” said press secretary Michael Ortiz in an e-mail to B&C late Wednesday.
“He considers this debate to be a distraction from the conversation we should be having about opening up the airwaves and modern communications to as many diverse viewpoints as possible,” said Ortiz.
As our friend Jim Geraghty reminds us, all of Barack Obama’s statements come with an expiration date. Today, Chris Wallace interviewed David Axelrod and asked him directly about the Fairness Doctrine — and suddenly the White House adviser got a lot less definitive:
WALLACE: Will you rule out reimposing the Fairness Doctrine?
AXELROD: I’m going to leave that issue to Julius Genachowski, our new head of the FCC, to, and the president, to discuss. So I don’t have an answer for you now.
That’s hardly a denial, as Politico’s Michael Calderone notes:
Lester Kinsolving, the conservative radio host, has twice asked Robert Gibbs about it in the briefing room, and each time, the press secretary didn’t reveal the administration’s position.
Last week, I reached out to press office staffers in order to find out if the administration’s position is the same as in June, and have not yet received a response.
If Obama’s position on the Fairness Doctrine is the same as during the campaign — and I have no reason to believe it isn’t — stating such clearly would quickly silence a lot of conservative critics who assume the Democratic president is going to try and reinstate the defunct policy. Otherwise, the Fairness Doctrine chatter on the airwaves isn’t likely to die down.
It’s an easy question. Does this administration believe in free speech or government censorship? Their sudden inability to provide a clear answer, when they had no problem giving such assurances eight months ago, does not bode well for the answer.
I’d like to say I told you so to all of those who accused us of paranoia, but the window on that ability to do so on the airwaves looks like it’s about to expire — like all of Obama’s campaign promises.
The American media should be ashamed of themselves on this issue. They pose as the defenders of the First Amendment and free speech. Why are Chris Wallace and Michael Calderone the only MSM people pursuing this?

This is very true. As much as I don’t agree with them, I still will read the lib blogs and occasionally listen to a lib on the radio just to see what’s in their tiny little minds. There used to be an Air America show out here with somebody, I think it was a kennedy, with this whiny nasally voice that reminded me of that Hyena in the Hanna Barbera cartoons, Hardy Har Har, who used to whine, “Oh me, oh my”. It was difficult to listen to. But the thing about the left wing talk shows is that there is very little substance there. They never seemed to take a relevant issue and break it down logically and discuss why it would or wouldn’t be a smart thing to do, it was always about feelings. That’s a really difficult thing to sell over the radio and I think that’s why Air America went under.

Did you really write super paranoid? Good grief.
Leaving that aside, it’s my understanding that the Fairness Doctrine is an FCC matter. And once Obama has a compliant five-member (I think it’s five) commission in place, the majority of the board can reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, and it’s a done deal. So, unless I’m mistaken, reinstating the Fairness Doctrine doesn’t require a signature–or anything else for that matter–from Obama.
To overturn an FCC reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine, either Congress would have to provide a legislative remedy, essentially outlawing the Fairness Doctrine, or the federal courts, once presented with a lawsuit, would have to provide a judicial remedy, essentially ruling that the Fairness Doctrine violates an applicable statute, the U.S. constitution, or some other principle.

A taste of reality for the Hack-attackers…
Do you remember 1987……..
Thought you might be interested in this forgotten bit of information………
It was 1987! At a lecture the other day they were playing an old news video
of Lt. Col. Oliver North testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the
Reagan Administration.
There was Ollie in front of God and country getting the third degree, but
what he said was stunning!
He was being drilled by a senator;
‘Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?’
Ollie replied,
‘Yes, I did, Sir.’
The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience,
‘Isn’t that just a little excessive?’
‘No, sir,’ continued Ollie.
‘No? And why not?’ the senator asked.
‘Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, sir.’
‘Threatened? By whom?’ the senator questioned.
‘By a terrorist, sir’ Ollie answered.
‘Terrorist? What terrorist could
possibly scare you that much?’
‘His name is Osama bin Laden, sir’ Ollie replied.
At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but
couldn’t pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn’t. A
couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued. ‘Why
are you so afraid of this man?’ the senator asked. ‘Because, sir, he is the most
evil person alive that I know of ‘ Ollie answered.
‘And what do you recommend we do about him?’ asked the senator.
‘Well, sir, if it was up to me, I would recommend that an assassin team be
formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth.’
The senator disagreed with this approach. And, that was all that was shown
of the clip.
By the way, that senator was Al Gore…
Also:
Terrorist pilot Mohammad Atta blew up a bus in Israel in 1986. The Israelis
captured, tried and imprisoned him. As part of the Oslo agreement with the Palestinians in 1993,
Israel had to agree to release so-called ‘political prisoners.’
However, the Israelis would not release any with blood on their hands, The
American President at the time, Bill Clinton, and his Secretary of State,
Warren Christopher, ‘insisted’ that all prisoners be released.
Thus Mohammad Atta was freed and eventually thanked us by flying an airplane
into Tower One of the World Trade Center . This was reported by many of the
American TV networks at the time that the terrorists were first identified.
It was censored in the US from all later reports.

There is a great clip Hannity runs of Alec Baldwin trying to host a radio talk show. He doesn’t know when to go to break, and sounds like a zombie. In other words, he sounds like “Air America”. More “distracting” news about the “Fairness Doctrine”, this time from the Left Coast:
Former Democratic California governor and current Attorney General Jerry Brown appeared on conservative talk host Michael Savage’s radio show on Feb. 13. One of the issues the two debated was the possibility of the renewal of the Fairness Doctrine. During the interview, Savage noted that Brown sounded as if he wanted state control over the media.
“Well, a little state control wouldn’t hurt anybody,” Brown replied.

The reason they are vague is that they are working on some type of Community Diversity Board regulations. Each radio station will have a board of community organizers assigned to it in order to “better reflect the local community’s interests.” Of course, any station that broadcasts political talk will be forced to air a “balanced political spectrum.” That translates as 12 hours per day of no-listener shows and bankruptcy. The beauty of this scheme is that the words conservative or Republican never have to be mentioned. If the stations broadcast politics they are driven bankrupt. If they broadcast Top 40 or Golden Oldies they survive. What could be fairer? It’s just bad luck that it only affects conservatives.

hawkdriver on February 15, 2009 at 4:35 PM
The American media should be ashamed of itself “on this issue”? Why would they, when they haven’t been on any other “issue”? Obama knows he has no political need to be accountable, because the media won’t hold him accountable. If they called him out on any of these lies they’d only be calling out themselves, as well as repudiating their faith. Obama knows he can say anything without consequence. And who was making the “paranoia” accusations? The Left — we already know them to be ones who will say anything, make any charge, tell any lie, toward their end.
Putting odds on a return of the Fairness Doctrine is the safest bet in Washington.

If a few of the forced broadcast shows are popular, why just keep trying. How about 3 hours on the local school bus controversy? Or how about the plans to build an off-ramp near town? The Community Board’s job will never end. If they just keep generating broadcast ideas in the name of diversity, sooner or later they’ll stumble on a no- listener format! And once the magic formula is found the station goes bankrupt. You just have to keep trying. What could be simpler? The “Fairness Doctrine,” under whatever name they will use this time, is not about getting Liberal talkers on the air, it’s about closing down talk radio. That’s why there was none the last time the Fairness Doctrine was in effect.
Fred 2 on February 15, 2009 at 4:50 PM
The One needs an emergency to impose the fairness doctrine, so, we have Rush interfering with desperately needed legislation. We, the people (the Democrats) have to act over a weekend or holiday to end the suffering, save the nation and preserve democracy. Buried in the act nobody read is the fairness doctrine or something equally venal. Then The One goes on vacation while the suffering nation waits. But He has His evil.

We use a laser borescope for our machine guns on our helicopters to dial them into the laser we use for night and NVGs. That one though goes in the breech and shines down the length on the barrel. Do you find this type that you stick in the end of the barrel is as accurate?
For me, I use dial my scope in at the range with matched ammo I make. For the AR15, I shoot 3-5 rounds of 55 gr FMJ with 24 gr 2230 powder on Winchester brass. I shoot at 100 yard targets and just keep dialing the scope in until it hits what I want. I take it you just dial the scope in on the laser?

I was supposed to get out in June but wasn’t sure if I was Stop Lossed again and was resigned to doing another year in Afghanistan. The boss just let me know recently, he was going to let me go. I told him I’d extend till the end of August to help push them out and also give myself some time to take advantage of the retirement process that I’d been skipping over since we found out they were going early this Spring and training hard. Anyway, by the end of the Summer I’ll be a civilian for the first time since 76.
I hope then I’m able to legally voice my opinion without retribution because of my active duty status. There’s important work to be done in this country and you have your hands tied if your active.
As far as the weapons, I’ll have one more season that I can hunt in PA as a military resident and then I’m switching to NC. I’m trying to decide whether to purchase a larger caliber weapon or take out a White Tail with my .223. I have friends that are timid about shooting larger game with one for fear of not taking them with the first shot, but I think I’m pretty accurate. Your thoughts?

On the surface of that argument, I’d agree…
This has nothing to do about fairness… this to squash descent…
Blatant and naked…

Absolutely mislabeled to intentionally mislead. Nothing fair about it.

They should be ashamed of a lot more than just this one issue.

Hawk,
If you’re close enough and accurate enough cal is not as important…mo
Dropping the animal where it stands is what counts…
I’ve seen others take a bad shot with a 30.06…200yds later it fell…not good…
I personally have gone more than a season without taking a shot.
Saw many deer, even had them in the CH’s…confidence was low…distance, brush, breeze…

I hope and pray that they call Mark Levin to testify before congress. That would be right up there with having Frank Zappa testify about record labeling. Now that was a hoot.

BTW Hawk,
My personal best was a 3p spike…just under 250yds…Rem 30.06
Perfect shot…maybe that’s why I hesitate…
That was in Sullivan County off of Route 55 in 1975

My thoughts exactly. The AR15 if it were legal would make up for in volume what I couldn’t get in accuracy with Bambi. (kidding) I’ll go with my Rem and just make sure I really have it dialed in. You know what’s funny is the guys up home love the 20-250 but they look down on the .223. Geez the 20-250 isn’t much different than the 22 (like they compare the .223 or 5.56 to too) but just on a ton of powder. I guess they think more velocity on the same caliber is better than just being accurate.
Jerry, where and what are you still hunting these days?

And his wife still has the temerity to push the FD. If they were Republicans, they’d be driven out of politics on a rail.

Because radio is where you find a lot of conservatives. If it weren’t for talk radio and conservative blogs, there wouldn’t be anything known about the “stimulus” bill.
