More Challengers for Specter? [Mark Hemingway]

There’s this from NRO:

Word is that some in the GOP have been trying to nudge Pat Toomey out of the Pennsylvania governor’s race and challenge Specter for his seat in 2010. Well, now there are rumors that Specter might face another serious challenger — Pittsburgh entrepreneur Glen Meakem. Meakem is independently wealthy and has his own talk radio show and newspaper column. A well-connected GOP source in Pennsylvania tells me that this should “scare the HECK out of Specter.” Meakem has already issued a press release blasting Specter for his compromise on the recent spending bill. He also told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “I’m not a candidate at this time, but I’m absolutely committed to see that there is a challenge,” Mr. Meakem said.

Also considering a run at Specter is Peg Luksik, who most recently served as campaign manager for Bill Russell, the Congressional candidate who came within a hair’s breadth of defeating John Murtha. She doesn’t quite have the resources or recognition that Meakam does, but she is savvy and a fixture in the Pennsylvania GOP.

Seriously, not flippantly here, I conclude that Specter’s mind is troubled. He does not display a mental competency (that statement alone, combined with the full range of the rest of his “decisions”). He does appear to be mentally incompetent.

I’ve more of a fan of Specter’s politics than most people here, but the truth is that Specter is getting senile. His mind is like of the Reagan in 1987. And he really shouldn’t run for re-election. Sadly, I’ll probably vote for the man anyway. Elections are like that. All of our options are tainted.

I did send Specter a letter urging him not to run again for this reason. Steele and Kaine really need to have the power to encourage some politicians to retire. Perhaps, letters to donors pointing out that politicians like Specter and Byrd have been in office for a long time and it’s time for new blood.

I have a question for those that want to march on Washington, and I do too. What are the open carry laws in D.C.? I don’t mean handguns, but rifles and shotguns.

I just got back from his local office, and I think I got a robo-response there too.

I voted for Specter, and I’ll probably do it again, but this is exactly the problem I have with Specter, Snowe, and Collins right now.

He must know by now there will probably be a conservative challenger, even if no one has declared yet. It’s just whether the person would be a credible threat to Arlen. Bush and Santorum won’t drag Arlen’s sorry butt across the primary line this time.

Pat Toomey, who nearly beat Arlen last time, and who is a super articulate fiscal conservative (President of Club for Growth) has already been on the radio saying the Porkulus is a disaster and that he is “watching” Specter. Read between the lines, unless Specter falls in line, Toomey will jump in and will be very well funded. that is why Arlen’s lawyer troops in Philly, virtually all Dems, are scrambling to raise money already. Arlen is going down, Bush and Rove can’t help him against a conservative, this time.

But I will be sending Mike Steele more reminders that he has to choose–my support for any GOP candidate in 2010 or his precious RINO senator from PA.

Ed, you should include the link to email Spector. Perhaps he may listen, between phone calls and interweb messages and such.

Dear Senator Specter:

Vote NO on this objectionable so-called ‘stimulus’ bill.

I refer you to the Bloomberg article describing the disastrous, unvetted healthcare provisions slipped into the bill:

An excerpt:

“Tragically, no one from either party is objecting to the health provisions slipped in without discussion. These provisions reflect the handiwork of Tom Daschle, until recently the nominee to head the Health and Human Services Department.

Senators should read these provisions and vote against them because they are dangerous to your health. (Page numbers refer to H.R. 1 EH, pdf version).

The bill’s health rules will affect “every individual in the United States” (445, 454, 479). Your medical treatments will be tracked electronically by a federal system. Having electronic medical records at your fingertips, easily transferred to a hospital, is beneficial. It will help avoid duplicate tests and errors.

But the bill goes further. One new bureaucracy, the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, will monitor treatments to make sure your doctor is doing what the federal government deems appropriate and cost effective. The goal is to reduce costs and “guide” your doctor’s decisions (442, 446). These provisions in the stimulus bill are virtually identical to what Daschle prescribed in his 2008 book, “Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis.” According to Daschle, doctors have to give up autonomy and “learn to operate less like solo practitioners.”

Keeping doctors informed of the newest medical findings is important, but enforcing uniformity goes too far.

New Penalties

Hospitals and doctors that are not “meaningful users” of the new system will face penalties. “Meaningful user” isn’t defined in the bill. That will be left to the HHS secretary, who will be empowered to impose “more stringent measures of meaningful use over time” (511, 518, 540-541)

What penalties will deter your doctor from going beyond the electronically delivered protocols when your condition is atypical or you need an experimental treatment? The vagueness is intentional. In his book, Daschle proposed an appointed body with vast powers to make the “tough” decisions elected politicians won’t make.”

Senator Specter: Vote NO and protect our citizens’ access to healthcare and freedom to get the treatment they need.

Senator Specter: Vote NO and deny this opportunistic attempt to impose a huge burden of debt upon the citizens that will benefit only those who do not work in the interests of the taxpayers.

Vote NO and deny the outrageous funding of shady voter fraud organization ACORN with our hard earned taxpayer dollars.

Senator: Vote NO and represent the best interests of the citizens of Pennsylvania and the United States.

Us too. Dorgan & Conrad would be voted out on their liberal arses if they messed with the 2nd. Which is why they tread carefully I think, at least at home they don’t say much.
Dorgan also is for the new coal gasification plant in South Heart-even though that’s been stalled for now.

ND is weird-conservative nationally, liberal locally.

Just every other member of the House of Lords, Specter is a Major Player in his own, deluded, mind.
