Will you be the “rounding error”?

Barack Obama makes a lot of claims about the stimulus package, especially on its impact on unemployment, but Politico notices that they don’t add up — literally.  A chart produced by the White House projecting job stimulation shows large differences between state figures and the totals of the districts included in them.  The Obama administration calls these “rounding errors”, but it looks a lot more like bad math:

A White House estimate of the number of jobs stimulus legislation will create includes some sharp discrepancies between state and local jobs claims.

Those differences — which the document suggests are large rounding errors — was spotted by the office of House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, which assembled the chart above. It comes as the White House is seeking to define the stimulus package as a jobs bill, and to focus locally on the jobs it will create. …

“State totals may not sum due to rounding,” the chart says at the bottom, though in some cases — most dramatically, understandably, in small states — the rounding error represents a large share of the projected jobs. In small states with just one congressional district, which represents the whole state, the difference is particularly striking, presumably a result of different methods of calculating the job figures for the same set of residents.

Rounding?  Ben Smith shows some of the examples, which are laughably off:

  • Delaware – State projection 11,000 jobs, total of districts 9900, off by 1100 jobs
  • District of Columbia – “State” projection 12,000 jobs, “district” projection 7200, off by 40%
  • Nevada – State projection 34,000, total of districts 29,400, off by 4600 jobs

And so on.  Clearly, the White House is using the time-honored mathematical method of pulling numbers out of one’s rear end.  They are so bad about it that no one at the White House apparently thought to reconcile the numbers to see whether they even came close to agreement before publishing them.  If someone produced numbers like this in the private sector for a project, they’d be fired.  In the public sector, they get to run things.

Can we afford to take economic policy from an administration who can’t even figure out addition?

No wonder Judd Gregg resigned as Commerce Secretary.  Apparently, he can actually do math.  It does explain why so many people in the Obama administration have problems with their taxes.

Everything about this deal would be laughable if it wasn’t so sad.

And there you have it.

The entire stimucrap bill is an exercise in rounding.

What do you want, a new ACORN museum? How does…say….17 billion sound? Ok, I’ll add it in.

How many millions of times does it need to be said, we are on the verge of being scammed into oblivion by a demorat mafia.

Bishop on February 13, 2009 at 8:21 AM

This will be the approach used on the census as they guestimate and extrapolate a landscape they believe is there.

Just like the climate change crowd as well!

singlemalt_18 on February 13, 2009 at 8:22 AM

Must be the new revisionist math they’ve adopted. Judd Gregg never went to that school.

Can we afford to take economic policy from an administration who can’t even figure out addition?

Obama: “57 states”
Biden: “three letters, J-O-B-S”
Pelosi: “500 million jobs lost”

I’d say no.

No doubt about it. Just like the “plan” that Geithner had. That was a clear lie – just one more lie in the torrent that spills out of this pathetic administration.

The idiot messiah and his merry band of lunatics should be FORCED to reveal the algorithms used to arrive at the numbers and, if they don’t exist, the whole crew need to be removed from their positions and jailed for the biggest fraud in the history of the US.

How much longer can we allow a bunch of America-hating retards to treat our governing institutions as a joke?

Wait a minute if we get the stimulous package the unemployed will be hired. Ask the CEO of Catapillar. I am currently waiting for Obama to pay our mortgages and put gas in our cars like he promised during the campaign. Why else would those people have voted for him?

The new treasury secretary has a stealth plan to save the economy. He wants to tell us what it is but he is waiting to get the stimulous money first.

The Obama administration is making the Carter administration look successful. Now that’s pretty bad after only three weeks in office. It seems like three years.

This is what you’d expect from a community organizer who has never had a real job in the public sector.

It’s actually a perfect example of something you could never get away with in the public sector.

In a business, if you turn in numbers that don’t reconcile, they’re thrown back in your face, or if they slip through and your boss uses them in a presentation, your boss will get shredded and he will in turn come back and fire you for making him look stupid.

Obama looks stupid, and frankly he deserves to.

jeff_from_mpls on February 13, 2009 at 8:26 AM

Ok, this tin-foil-hat-wearing-Birther-far-right-wing-nut-alarmist is waiting for an apology… I’m waiting…

Still waiting…

(knock-knock) Is this thing on?

To all of you that have called for compromise and moderation and defended this Messiah, said to get along, said we need to be supportive, said we need to wait and watch as he moves to the center… rofl!

(sticks tongue out and gives a rasberry) I told you so!

This loon is a radical! Obama is a liar, he is an empty suit and a REAL and CLEAR and PRESENT DANGER to America, the Constitution and our rights and freedoms. Any question now?

I’m waiting…

The gaol of the radical left, and Obama is the leader, has been to silence ANY oposition, any voice… To villify the Conservatives, kinda like here at HotAir… Real hard core Conservatives have been warning ALL of you moderates and centerists that this President was not to be trusted or given any honeymoon. He is a radical with designs on the destruction of America as we know it… He lied about Caterpillar and the CEO’s comment, he lied about the NO Pork in the Porkulous… He has violated his own “rules” by allowing lobbiests… Nothing he has said has been real or truthful EXCEPT that he intended to CHANGE America.

I’m waiting for all the moderates and centerists and big tenters to WAKE THE F-UP… You better get on board the CONSERVATIVE train before we have no train to ride and no rights to speak! We can not negoitiate nor can we will go along with this abortion of America, our values and our core. Those that have talked of moderation should, by now, see this POS for what he is… A lying, radical leftist.

Obama is taking the census from the hands of experts to change voting districts. Add Liberal seats, hurt Republicans and yet we hear nothing from the RNC, nothing from Fox, nothing from the big-tent’ers and moderates. Where is the outrage, where is the alarm? Obama and the radical left are stealing future election right now! The money to ACORN, the census theft, the welfare and overthrow of talk radio. Where is the concern? I was right, Rush is right and many of you here at HA are wrong to not be very worried. I do see Revolution, maybe not viloent, but revolution non the less… Conservatives will be marching, we will get organized. The RNC will move RIGHT and away from this man or we will form our own party to take back America.

I want my apology’s… Conservatives have not been wrong. Moderates have… This is real, we can no longer be called wing nuts or alarmists. Face the facts folks, your the ones who have been wrong to trust this Messiah.

It’s so bad, it’s almost as though Obama listened to racist anti-American rants on a weekly basis for 20 years.

These rounding errors are “tiny” and don’t “pose a serious threat.” For that, you’ll have to wait for their census results.

Loxodonta on February 13, 2009 at 8:29 AM

That’s how Democrats define things.
For example.Winning the war on terror = bad.
Losing it =good.
Franklin Raines’s leadership at the helm of Fannie Mae = Outstanding while Republicans efforts to control spending = partisan.

You just need to know how to interpret things. If a Democrat tells you something is good for you then run for the hills.

Hey, Quit knocking the new math. Now that the kids only have to get close to the right answer the high school drop out rate has improved. More kids are going to college. Jobs for remedial teachers are up. It’s good for the economy.

I say we should eliminate competition and failure altogether. Pass everybody. The only thing I haven’t figured out is where will we get people to populate our sports teams in the new non competitive utopia. I mean, seriously who can live without beer, pretzels, and football?

The democrats are the most interesting species. I don’t know how anyone can not agree the world is a safer and better place since they seized consolidated attained power. Look around you. Unemployment is up, The economy is in freefall, Terrorists are active in Bagdad again, Iran appears about to build nuclear weapons, Taliban is beheading polish folks. This is not the change we were promised. Actually it is not much of a change at all. The only change I see is that the Obama administration may be the most inept since James Earl Carter. At least we have a funny press secretary to give us our daily laugh.

Obama has already made clear his plan to obliterate working Americans as his “disappearing middle class” the target for demolition.

“It’s In Our Hands” Census 2009 Motto–Census Job Ads appearing in Craigslist to hire unskilled and illiterate temporary employees to handle the door to door “confidential” gathering of data from those who refused to participate in the mail-in. The Census will advertise in surround sound from RELIABLE SOURCES like American Idol, and sending flyers home with elementary school children to their illiterate illegal alien parents. No inclusion of the PTA or any adult organization in this Census. No utilization of statistics already garnered by global IT databases that already determine the global market.

This is New York five months into hard times.

And now Washington becomes the financial capital of the country, of the world. Oh, what a status shift. Oh, what a fact.

Peggy Noonan

Judd Gregg escaped branding as a Socialist in the nick of time to retain his position as Republican Senator, realizing that the Obama Force has already rewritten every job description, bar none.

Headlines previously eluded to the shrinking role of Sec./State in Obama’s cabinet (lower case as no cabinet member retains their traditional role with Obama).

So is Hillary gnashing her teeth for having relinquished her job as Senator of New York? Obama is NOT likely to allow her globe trotting excursions. He will send Michelle on informal visits instead. Only HE can so adeptly insult every American ally and snuggle with every American threat. Why would he tolerate Hillary in his kitchen when he sees himself the only Chef Executive with the Soylent Strategy recipe? Wait one year, and mark well Biden’s passing (RIP) and Michelle Obama appointment as Vice President.

Is New York relieved Hillary’s left?

Exactly whom will Paterson allow to represent the displaced power base of Big Apple New York?

All business under Potus Obama will ONLY be Government Business, federal socialism, no free enterprise competition allowed. No dissent tolerated.

The administration does not want you to know what is in this bill because you would be astonished and frightened. These are very sad times we live in.

rplat on February 13, 2009 at 8:57 AM

Ed, the whole claim that this ’stimulus’ bill has anything to do with ‘jobs’ is just a cover for the rubes in the media.

It’s really just forcing open the sewer flood gates for 25 years of pent-up liberal sludge. Obambi and the Democrats want to make sure all the programs and policies in this bill get established before there’s any backlash.

So it doesn’t matter what the ‘job’ numbers are. They just make them up and throw them out like chum to the media fish.

There’s not a single credible metric being applied to this “recovery” program. Jobs created or saved is utterly meaningless. If only 4 million of us have jobs in 4 years, is that a success?

Can we have some predictions, and some falsifiability?

And while we’re at it, forget the new web sites — have the new programs subject to GPRA and PARTed on a fixed 2-year schedule from the date of passage of the bill. Web sites are nice, but we already have processes for ensuring accountability of government programs. Don’t let them substitute economicrecovery.gov for independent review.

Libwads also think that someone who paid $1000 for a piece of land in 1930 and sold it for $1500 in 2000 has made a $500 profit.

It’s the new Bill Ayers educational framework math…..

Caper29 on February 13, 2009 at 10:19 AM

But the “rounding errors” really don’t matter. CBO has already said that it’s almost impossible to point to any given job and say “that was created by the stimulus”, and even harder to say “that job was SAVED by the stimulus”.

So really, as long as 4 million people are employed in America, Obama will be able to claim that it worked. Of course, if we keep losing 300 million jobs a day…

Clearly, the White House is using the time-honored mathematical method of pulling numbers out of one’s rear end

Hey. Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it dude – it’s liberating.

It liberates you from actually having to think and exercise competence in your research & reasoning.

We have truly saddled ourselves with an affirmative-action Presidential Clot.

It is bad math. Tennessee however is the only State and District totals that add up. Nationwide, the Districts number is only 16,100 higher than the State number, so I guess they’re counting on some of the workers moving between states.

Worse though is that all of these numbers add up to only 3.4 million jobs. I thought Obama was saying that he would create or save upwards of 4-5 million jobs.

We can track job creation and we can track job loss. How do we track job retention?

How do we track job retention?

SouthernRoots on February 13, 2009 at 11:00 AM

Thats the easiest of all. If you are emplyed today and do not lose your job during Obama’s term your job can be claimed as a retention. If you lose your job it can be blamed on Bushes recession but you might get one of the new jobs Obama creates. In other words it’s a shell game.

“You’ve got some economists mathematicians and some folks who think they’re economists mathematicians. By the way, these days everybody thinks they’re economists mathematicians,” [Obama] joked.

Facts are distractions.

Arithmatic is a distraction.

Destroyed lives are a distraction.

Well, as Ann Coulter pointed out, college humanities departments are filled with liberals, while the areas that require actual mathematical ability (and may contribute to the productive gains of society), like economics and chemical engineering, are filled with conservatives.

Obviously, our erstwhile President took the “I couldn’t do math, so I went to law school” approach to life. Maybe if the LSAT included a section on calculus, this wouldn’t happen.

ex-Democrat: love the bumper stickers! Any chance you could make one with: “‘Curious George Goes to Washington’ Is Not a Valid Chapter in American History”?

I dunno is they?

And so on. Clearly, the White House is using the time-honored mathematical method of pulling numbers out of one’s rear end.

In fairness, “Numbers” is the nickname of the S&M freak Barney Frank picked up at the Manhole last night. And he only pulled out because, hey, we’ve all got day jobs to go to.

Liberals have always maintained the 1+1=3 from thereon out it all makes mathematical sense.
