The “war” on Barack Obama? Oh, please

posted at 8:55 am on February 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

The normally sensible Joe Gandelman links to the normally hysterical Andrew Sullivan today to complain about the supposed “war” launched against Barack Obama by the Republicans.  Neither man considers the fact that Republicans — and a great many Americans — have serious questions about the economic policies of Obama and the Democratic leadership in Congress, but instead just have it out for Obama personally.  Sullivan:

This much is now clear. Their clear and open intent is to do all they can, however they can, to sabotage the new administration (and the economy to boot). They want failure. Even now. Even after the last eight years. Even in a recession as steeply dangerous as this one. There are legitimate debates to be had; and then there is the cynicism and surrealism of total political war. We now should have even less doubt about what kind of people they are. And the mountain of partisan vitriol Obama will have to climb every day of the next four or eight years.

Gandelman:

Some will quibble with how Sullivan words this, but it is indeed increasingly difficult to make an argument that the Republican party is acting in good faith with the White House and the American people as it continues to play to its base.

Good faith?  When exactly did the Democrats show good faith?  This bill started out by locking Republicans out of its draft, as well as many Democrats through Nancy Pelosi’s refusal to return to regular order in the House.  This is the most expensive bill ever considered by the Congress, by far the most expensive project ever considered, and yet the Democrats have failed to allow any meaningful debate or access to amend the bill.  In fact, they have yet to provide the bill to some members, but K Street already has its copies.  Yet they want to force a vote today on a bill comprising 1500 pages of legisation, with an initial cost of $785 billion and a ten-year cost of over $3 trillion without giving people a chance to read it — and the Republicans are acting in bad faith?

Joe references Rush Limbaugh as proof of the Republican war against Obama, but that’s absurd.  When Republican Congressmen and Senators start calling for Obama to be impeached, like we have heard from their Democratic counterparts for almost the entire span of the Bush administration, then you can cry about a “war” on Obama.  Dissent on policy is not war, gentlemen.  It’s America.

And if Joe wants to complain about Rush Limbaugh, where was he during the entirety of Keith Olbermann’s sorry career of supposed news anchorship, which consisted of nothing but anti-Bush diatribes?

There certainly is legitimate debate to be had, and especially on Porkulus.  Sullivan’s argument is apparently that none dare challenge The One, lest it be considered a “war”.  Well, man up, because we’re going to challenge every bad policy that comes out of the Obama administration for the next four years — because that’s what people do in democracies when they disagree.

But in the NEW America…

it is an act against the people’s party.

What? No “vast right-wing conspiracy”? Just “war”? Not very vivid or imaginative?

It’s “war” when Obama keeps shooting himself in the foot?

Wethal on February 13, 2009 at 9:01 AM

Dissent against the great and dear leader is not patriotic. It is treason. Dissent against G. W. was warranted because he stole two elections and took away all our civil rights.

Apparently, the only way Republicans can act in “good faith”, is to do whatever Obama tells them to do.

How can anyone, with an I.Q. over 60, buy into the idea that we oppose the stimulous plan simply because it’s Obama’s plan? This blind, numbingly stupid, faith people have for Obama’s “goodness” is staggering!

katy on February 13, 2009 at 9:06 AM

Hey Andrew, if Bush was trying to implement that pork-u-lus, you would be against it and rightly so. But when Obama does it and the GOP balks…your first reaction is why didn’t they do that to Bush (ahhhh probably for the same reason Democrats are not doing it to Obama), and now it is just the GOP plays unfairly?

You are right, I wish the GOP restrained Bush on spending. But that does not mean they shouldn’t restrain Obama. Remember when you were a fiscal conservative? Remember when you thought divided government was a good thing? You know somesort of stimulus is widely supported, do you really think this is the best bill evah and that it is all or nothing? Choose this or choose depression?

You assume the GOP knee capped Gregg. Earth to Andrew, if the GOP had that kind of mussle, they would knee cap Specter, Collins and Snowe. Why don’t you accept the more obvious answer, Gregg was disturbed about commerce not getting the census and was against this pork-u-lus plan?

The problem with this bill is it offers very little stimulus, incurs massive debt, and will likely do more harm than good for the recovery.

This “catastrophe-a-day” administration should not be criticized? Really?

Obama supporters promised the “smoothest transition evah”, “the most ethical government evah”, “the most intelligent president evah”, and lots of other evahs. The reallity is that this administration cannot even manage one of these accomplishments, let alone all of them. Their dreams are dashed. Criticism of the daily whopper failures is unbearable for them.

Do you realize that it would take a one-hour television special to chronicle all of the administration’s missteps during the first, worst 100 days?

The answer is, of course:
George W. Bush deserves to be called Hitler, to have people wish for his death, to have people wish he had never been born, to have people call him the worst person ever.
Even though Obama is screwing up royal constantly, he MEANS well. So no one can question his decisions or his motives for anything because he MEANS well.

The Dean on February 13, 2009 at 9:13 AM

It is appropriate to argue and act for your political opponents’ failure in their domestic agendas. I do not share the socialists’ goal to remake the US as Lower Canada or as Greater Belgium. I will actively work against them and Chairman ObaMao in that regard, and will not apologize. Likewise, I don’t expect them to jump on board with my goals for the US either–as my goal is to dramatically shrink the Federal government and make it look more like what the founders envisioned, a prospect that would horrify their Euroweenie sensibilities.

However, it is not appropriate to wish for (much less, to act for) your country’s failure on the battlefield. It is traitorous. Here is the difference between conservatives on the one hand, and socialists twits like Gandelman and odious cowards like Sullivan on the other. When Chairman ObaMao leads the country on the battlefield, if he ever does, conservatives will be there. Whereas, the socialists argued for the defeat of the nation on the battlefield when Bush was C-I-C. They were traitors, copperheads in the worst sense. For that, they will not be forgiven.

Who needs to sabotage the new administration? Those in it are doing a good enough job of sabotage themselves. I’m reminded of that adage about giving someone enough rope to hang themselves. Anyway, we’re just talking amongst ourselves.

All this whining from Obama and his acolytes is childish. Grow up and start leading rather than throwing money to your petty interest groups.

BuckeyeSam on February 13, 2009 at 9:15 AM

I have been in DC for the past few days, living among the Obamaniacs….face it, from what I have seen here in the posh neighborhoods of Great Falls, McLean and Potomac, this is no longer about a President, but soo much about a godhead, a Messiah…and this, from those making a helluva lot more than $500k per annum.

Can’t talk to them about what is actually in the stimulus…no heresy is permitted among the devout. Was` told by one real estate mogul that Obama is the smartest, most educated, most visionary leader this nation has`ever seen and if I would just get out of Ohio and out from among all those hicks I, too, could see the vision, the hope, the wonder of Obama.

All the screw ups over the past 24 days of this administration are indeed the fault of the Republcans…all of them…according to my hosts and a lot of other well-to-do Obamatrons in the DC high-end suburbs.

I asked several times of many, what about dissent being the highest form of patriotism…and was told that dissent against the evil BushCheneyRumsfeld was legitimate, dissent against Obama is just stupidity…from the truly stupid, who let right-wing ideology get in the way and cloud their vision…

Reporting live from Great Falls, Virginia…

A dissenter. A proud dissenter.

Wasn’t it just a short while ago the the GOP was accusing the Dems of wanting failure? As for Obama and his administration–He’s got me puzzled so far. Is all this underhandedness his idea or the ideas of Emmanuel(whom I sense is a basically power hungry and manipulative man with no scruples of any kind). Are they both like this or is Obama being manipulated too? Doesn’t matter. Alone or together they are a danger to the basic freedoms and tenets this country stands for. It would appear that their efforts to consolidate power far out weigh any shred of moral integrity that either have or might have had at one time.

Dissent will not be tolerated. Mainly, because the administration and the MSM are not honest enough to stand up to it and answer it. People are starting to have buyers’ remorse. That’s what I don’t get. Even as recently as a few months ago right before the election, Sullivan was talking fiscal conservatism on Bill Maher’s show(don’t cringe, it was actually a good episode that night) and was irate about TARP and all the bailouts.

Now he’s talking up the stimulus bill and accusing anyone who opposes it of being a warmonger? Why doesn’t the guy just pick a team already and quit switching sides?

Doughboy on February 13, 2009 at 9:19 AM

Hummer53 on February 13, 2009 at 9:30 AM

Thanks, Ed, for another great post.

As you know, reason and veracity have little to do with it. Their rhetoric isn’t designed so much to convey meaning, as to produce the intended effect: to deflect from Obama’s recent mishaps, to intimidate us into a defensive posture and to regain for themselves the offense. They want to frame the debate in terms of a personal attack, thereby converting it from a rational argument (based on policies, programs, actions) to an emotional appeal with racial overtones.

Or as Rush sometimes puts it, for them what counts in not the weight of the evidence, but the seriousness of the charge.

petefrt on February 13, 2009 at 9:31 AM

I’m afraid that Andrew Sullivan would be entirely unable to “Man up.”

AntonK on February 13, 2009 at 9:31 AM

I suppose it won’t occur to these obama people that it was they who set the standard for President bashing. They set the precedent, they made the rules, they determined the tone(and idiots like Patrick Leahy are still doing this)and wrote the handbook. None of this should surprise them, but apparently it does.

Tax cuts for the Rich,
Bush stole the 2000 election
Bush stole the 2004 election
No blood for oil,
Bush tortures,
Bush is spying on Americans,
Bush is ripping up the Constitution,
Bush is Hitler,
Bush is a war monger,
Bush exposed Plame almost getting her killed in her jaguar,
Bush is responsible for terrorism around the world…..on…..and…on….and…on.

None of the Conspiracy theories and bigoted accusations thrown at the Bush administration were found to be factual.
None!!!
Bush was not guilty of any of the bogus accusations we heard from democrats for 8 years.

That is:

but it is indeed increasingly difficult to make an argument that the (Republican)NO THE DEMOCRATIC party is acting in good faith with the White House and the American people as it continues to play to its base.

Not exposing deceitful spending practices that are going to gut this country by using facts and referencing history you
ignorant liberal tool.

I thought that dissent was patriotic.

Illinidiva on February 13, 2009 at 8:57 AM

That was before the rats won the White House. Now patriotism is doing whatever the filthy liar and the criminals of Congress say.

But this white guilt has transformed to white obsession….

Yes, it has taken on a life of its own. Here in Chicago, it’s a combination of white guilt, immediate gratification and Bush hatred which makes up the reasons to fall on your knees and kiss the ring.

Stay sane and hopefully you are going back to a safe haven next week.

If they want war, let it be so. We, I, have been attacked first; they attempt to restrict my economic and personal freedom and I am to sit idly by and allow it. Shays’ Rebellion in 1786 was the final straw that prompted our present constitution’s development. Maybe it is time to show that the ordinal intent of the Constitution remains the basis of our country.

The People are Sovereign, NOT the Government

“I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration you’re not patriotic. We should stand up and say, ‘We are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration!’”

–Hillary Clinton

liberal hypocrisy on full display!!!!!!!

I do want Obama to succeed. That’s why I oppose what he’s doing right now.

Mr. D on February 13, 2009 at 9:36 AM

hey want to frame the debate in terms of a personal attack, thereby converting it from a rational argument (based on policies, programs, actions) to an emotional appeal with racial overtones.

When you have commenters on this very thread telling us that “Obamamuslim is not MY President,” then this argument wears a bit thin.

Grow Fins on February 13, 2009 at 9:36 AM

I’m in Chicago. I feel your pain. The blind devotion is amazing especially among those that you thought had a brain.

I went to a retirement counselor yesterday in the Soldier Support Center here at Ft. Bragg. (Er, yep, BTW. I’m approved now by my command to retire and last year was the last deployment. Thought I was Stop Lose one more time but I’m done)

Anyway, this woman’s office I had to sit in was wall to wall Obama. I mean, not just the approved State Department photo that we put up in our unit areas, but the place was a shrine to include Barack 8 dollar bills. Plastered everywhere. She stepped out of her office to correct a mistake she had made in my packet and after about 5 minutes of sitting there creeped out by this place of worship, I stepped out myself into the waiting area. When she came back she asked me why I didn’t just stay in there and I just told her her office was a little stuffy for me. If I wasn’t required to conduct all of my retirement outprocessing in ACUs, I’d go in there with some of the shirts Rod was advertising above. Absolute, idol worshipping.

War on President Obortion? What?

Oh yeah…I see it now. Like all those political appointments that have been blocked by the Republican Minority in Congress like, uh….um…..and the guy from….um…..well, I can’t remember any specific names, but there’s a whole slew of folks…

The war Sullivan is witnessing is merely malingering by the Commander in Chief (he keeps shooting himself in the foot). Sullivan is hearing the gunfire, but can’t identify who’s doing the shooting. Typical.

BobMbx on February 13, 2009 at 9:38 AM

If you say it often enough and emphatically enough and stick to your message(like the left did against Bush)the discontents in the other Party will find a home with us. Now, do we want them?

jeanie on February 13, 2009 at 9:39 AM

Its all right out of the Saul Alinsky playbook.

moxie_neanderthal, Until further notice, dissent is no longer the greatest form of patriotism tolerated.

I’m afraid that Andrew Sullivan would be entirely unable to “Man up.”

– Heh!

kayo on February 13, 2009 at 9:40 AM

For the record…I do not dislike Obama’s policies and Administration because Obama is black…but because Obama hasn’t a real clue…unless of course he is indeed trying to turn America into a completely socialist state where dissent is outlawed and dissenters are jailed, and government will make ALL the decisions…

coldwarrior on February 13, 2009 at 9:29 AM

Motive and awareness doesn’t matter. Until further notice, all dissent is racism by definition. You wouldn’t want to force the filthy liar to actually defend all this wackadoodle stuff that is floating around out there would you? That wasn’t the deal Obama made with the left when he agreed to be the front man for their socialist agenda.

We have a friend that works for a developer that sells multi-million dollar condos in No. VA. Those suckers are selling mostly to corporations for their lobbying activities in DC. No. VA is full of Libs. Huge numbers of Libs. The number has been growing exponentially since the Clinton times. They never felt comfortable expressing their views for the last 12 years. They were busy defending Clinton and I do believe that took a lot out of them. Also why Hillary lost here in 08.
Since they don’t pay taxes (very much anyway) they are riding on a huge “high” now. In fact all Dems in VA are being really obnoxious. They should have celebrated quietly because we that actually know them are finding them insufferable. The Republicans went to Florida for the innauguration and are just filtering back. Even our Senators are now showing their arrogance for the people. Hopefully, it won’t be long before VA is back to normal.

Now, now. Give them credit. They at least haven’t blamed it all on racism.

Yet.
