Sacrilege: Students torpedo measure to rename high school after Obama

posted at 7:30 pm on February 13, 2009 by Allahpundit

A predictable case of teens rebelling against the establishment’s newest authority figure? Of course not. Barack’s counterculture, man; if he wasn’t, would he be the subject of totalitarian art? Turns out it’s (mostly) a case of school spirit. Boulder High is Boulder High, our new Messiah notwithstanding.

This story was gift-wrapped for me by Slapstick Politics, so I’m going to make you click over there to see who’s responsible for proposing the name change. Do note the photo near the bottom. You’ll find video of the group’s irritatingly self-important press conference withdrawing the petition at the top here. The kid at the mike’s going to end up as some Democrat’s press secretary someday, isn’t he?

Blowback

I went to school in this district. Centaurus High School in fact. Boulder high has an extremely leftist, new agey, and rich reputation. These kids are blowing my minds. Where were those types when I was 15?

No stimulus money for Boulder!

Someday, yes, but in the near future he will be the subject of a swirly.

Is this press conference really 12 minutes because I’m at 4 and falling asleep. He’s like a young Obama with the “uhs” and repetition.

herrevery on February 13, 2009 at 7:40 PM

Doesn’t a person usually have to accomplish something before getting buildings named after him. Washington and the rest of our founding fathers risked their lives to create our republic. Lincoln was assasinated for trying to keep our country together. Eisenhower was a highly decorated general who saved the world from evil.

I hate Obama, but I do however like the obvious mascot; the rainbow unicorn with sparkles.

Laura in Maryland on February 13, 2009 at 7:41 PM

Because people dared to disagree, these kids think it’s just because they failed to explain the Obama plan better.

And what they think they could have done better is COMMUNITY ORGANIZING.

I particularly enjoyed the kids that said, “This is a great change for the country and all, but, our school has been named this for sooooooo long. It just doesn’t make sense to change that.”

Apparently change is good and all as long as nothing REALLY important gets changed.

JadeNYU on February 13, 2009 at 7:54 PM

That was pretty amusing after the rest of the news today. I appreciated the 30 second long, concise statement from the kids representing Boulder High as a whole (was it the Student Council, maybe?)

herrevery on February 13, 2009 at 7:56 PM

Too bad Obama didn’t rush out there so he could get punked by those students like he did by Gregg and Owens from Caterpillar

genso on February 13, 2009 at 7:56 PM

I listened to news reports about this on KOA yesterday and was suprised it had so little support in a place like Boulder. But then we have what is important and what is not really mixed up these days.

Will Student Workers wash my car. Sorry, couldn’t last the entire twelve minutes it was taking this kid to explain that he’s a dumb ass. Color me skeptical about the surprise about the media coverage, especially while they are voguing it up for still shots. I was born at night, not last night.

Cindy Munford on February 13, 2009 at 8:01 PM

Student Workers Group? No partisan agenda? Right.

InterestedObserver on February 13, 2009 at 8:01 PM

The leftism is strong in Colorado but there is a sort of rugged individualism at play there as well. More than anything this story reflects the pride these students have both in Boulder, Colorado and Boulder High. That pride is well founded, good for them!

Dr. Manhattan on February 13, 2009 at 8:01 PM

“Student Workers’ Club”… holy irony, Batman!

Boulder is a VERY wealthy town… the housing values there are 2-3 times what they are for any neighboring municipality (I live about 20 minutes down the road). A friend just bought a house for over $200k that is slightly less than 700 square feet in living space.

And so I just have to wonder when these spoiled brats ever “worked” a day in their lives, much less gained any real perspective on the lives of the proles they believe they represent.

Ye gods…

kiltedscotsman5 on February 13, 2009 at 8:02 PM

Near as I can tell, there is only one Jimmy Carter High School, in La Joya, Texas. There is a problem, however:

Almost 5,000 Rio Grande Valley high school students will begin the new school year at campuses rated “persistently dangerous” by the state education agency.

Jimmy Carter High School in the La Joya school district and Todd Ninth Grade campus and Donna High School in the Donna district received the “dangerous” designation this year from the Texas Education Association…

…In Texas, a school receives the dangerous rating if, for three years running, it has reported expelling three or more students per 1,000 for any of the following: felony-level drug or alcohol offenses; possession or use of a firearm, club or weapons; murder or attempted murder, arson, aggravated kidnapping or assault; sexual assault or aggravated sexual assault…

Those kids warm my heart. Dissent is patriotic again.

What could be better than this? The school changing the name anyway and a student riot breaking out because of it.

Boulder is such a worker’s paradise in fact the property values have forced many police, teachers, and firefighters to live out of town! And that was 1998.

Dr. Manhattan on February 13, 2009 at 8:07 PM

“there is a sort of rugged individualism at play there as well. More than anything this story reflects the pride these students have both in Boulder, Colorado and Boulder High.”

Are you kidding me??? Where do you live, exactly???

Boulder is colloquially known among people who live here in Colorado as “25 square miles, surrounded on all sides by Reality.”

Rugged individualism? Perhaps the rest of the state, but Boulder is an elitist Leftist commune that revels in the sort of nanny-statism and hard-Left Marxist ideology that these kids (the – *laughs out loud* – Student WORKERS Club) embody. This story reflects nothing like pride in their school; it represents a magnified version of the same delusions regarding Obamessiah as those which have gripped much of the rest of the country.

kiltedscotsman5 on February 13, 2009 at 8:08 PM

“We initiate this campaign in order to honor the momentous achievement of his election as an African-American, inspire the community with his ideals of unity and hope,

Idiots… Unity? Like blocking debate on the Destroy America Bill? Not allowing Republicans to offer amendments? Holding secret meetings and sliding pork in to a massive bill no one has time to read? Promising to to post bills online for 5 days before signing them in to law, so we can all review the bills, and then already breaking that promise? Saying Congress can review the bill for 48 hours, and then breaking that promise and forcing a quick vote so Speaker Botox can go meet the Pope? IS THAT UNITY YOU STUPID, STUPID IDIOTS!?

How about “Hope”? Like condemning fear mongering during the campaign… then repeating, countless times, that this is the “worst economy since the great depression” and constantly whining about how “I inherited this”, etc. etc. IS THAT F-ING “HOPE”!?

Granted, these are just idiot high school kids… Being idiots is what they do. But we’ve got a country full of people like this, and it’s infuriating.

RightWinged on February 13, 2009 at 8:10 PM

Maybe they could compromise and name it Sea Kitten High.

Hah, Boulder is a whacked-out Lib Town.

Everyone there is white, rich and thinks they have spirit animals like “Grizzlies”, “Grey Wolves”, “Eagles”, and “White Buffalo”.

Har har.

I have a spirit animal too. It’s name is Jimmy and it’s a road-kill-possum.

I saw it once. I was crossing a road on a hike and it spoke to me. At first I was like, “whoa, why is that carcass talking?”

But then it gave me it’s wisdom…

“Montana, look both ways…”

Ok ok…point being, Boulder is a town of posers.

But congratulations to those kids for not being mindless-Obamacons.

malclave on February 13, 2009 at 8:13 PM

Everyone there is white, rich and thinks they have spirit animals like “Grizzlies”, “Grey Wolves”, “Eagles”, and “White Buffalo”.

That’s no joke; it is actually something my wife and I remarked on a few weeks ago: how lily-white Boulder is. It is probably one of the most racially homogenous (there are precious few Mexicans there, either, and this in COLORADO!!!) towns you are likely to find in the country… maybe New Hampshire could compete…

kiltedscotsman5 on February 13, 2009 at 8:13 PM

NO, NO, NO, those favoring changing Boulder HS have got things all confused.

See, the way it works is to first change the name of Boulder to “Obamagrad”.

Before you change the pillowcase, change the sheets on the bed it rests upon.

Silly liberals.

Scribbler on February 13, 2009 at 8:15 PM

I didn’t watch the press conf. , just the other video. The contrast between the two groups was interesting. The kids who were NOT in favor of changing the name were well spoken and had good reasons… the kids who did want to change the name could hardly look at the camera and make noise at the same time, and the one girl, of course implied that the reason SOME people didn’t want to change the name was because they’re racist!

4shoes on February 13, 2009 at 8:16 PM

lol the Student Workers? Whats the bet that not one of these pampered little pinko’s has ever done a hard days work in their life. Maybe we should send them off to China during the next summer holiday’s to work in a Chinese coal mine to learn what it truly means to be a member of the working class in a Communist state.

As for wanting to have the schools name changed to Obama high I’m surprised the little Marxist scumbags didn’t go for the gusto and try to have the place renamed the Alyinski centre for socialist re-education.

Dreadnought223 on February 13, 2009 at 8:16 PM

It doesn’t matter. In six months, all schools will be named for Osama Obama by directive from Washington.

Postage stamps will bear the image of His head as well, and all churches will place His statue on their altars.

I don’t think anything receiving public funds should be named for a living President or ex-President. Too soon. While naming an aircraft carrier after GHWB (a WWII Naval Aviator) or a sub after Jimmy Carter (a submariner) makes some sense, what do you name after Clinton?
