Obama asks workers to tell Congressman to vote for stimulus; no one does

posted at 3:20 pm on February 13, 2009 by Allahpundit

Yes, it’s Tapper again, mining more comedy gold from that clusterfark of a stimulus “rally” Obama held yesterday at Caterpillar’s plant in Illinois. Sensing his chance to squeeze one measly vote out of the House GOP caucus and thereby sanctify the bill as “bipartisan,” The One tried leaning on new Republican congressman Aaron Schock by putting him on the spot in front of the plant’s employees. Big mistake. I’ll let Schock take it from there.

Evidently Tapper humiliated Gibbs again at today’s White House presser, too, by refusing to let him spin his way out of Obama’s lie about Caterpillar rehiring people if the stimulus passed. I’m looking for video but haven’t found it yet. Can anyone help? Exit question: At least two major polls show more support for the bill than opposition, with Gallup topping out at 59 percent. And yet not a single Caterpillar employee asked Schock to vote for it? Really?

Blowback

No, the American people are outliers. We’re polling the NYT building, NBC, etc. Rookie mistake!

Rep. Shock is my pretend Congresshusband. He needs to turn gay, legalize gay marriage, and marry me. Lol.

Please confine yourselves to appropriate verbal discourse.

I was actually waiting to see you post this…, :)

Schock Rocks!!!

misslizzi on February 13, 2009 at 4:52 PM

I thought this was a highly manipulative and nasty thing to do. So extraordinarily unpresidential.

Obama is acting like a Chicago thug.

INC on February 13, 2009 at 3:42 PM

I agree 100%.

Maybe Obama feels threatened by Schock’s youth and extraordinary good looks…

racecar05 on February 13, 2009 at 4:53 PM

He IS a Chicago Thug.

Here is the Tapper/Gibbs video asked for in the post.

Schocktastic

Rockygold on February 13, 2009 at 5:03 PM

First, he’s my rep. Second, that’s a very Republican district even with Caterpillar. Third, there’s nothing in the bill for Caterpillar and the employees know that. Fourth, he said how many letters, etc. he got from Caterpillar emplyees to vote against the porkfest. He didn’t say how many he may have gotten urging him to vore for it. You would have thought the One would have insisted on some pork for the home team. The whole Catterpillar thing has blown up in his face. That’s what happens when it’s all image and no substance.

Laddy on February 13, 2009 at 5:09 PM

From what I understand Caterpillar and John Deer need the president to make a trade agreement with Columbia for their business to get a big push.

Cindy Munford on February 13, 2009 at 5:15 PM

I don’t know about saiga, but where did you get that from? There are some good looking honest people in Illinois, why could Aaron not be one of them? Regarding Bishop – I call, fax, email all the time. It has gotten to the point that our local elected state officials pick up the phone when I send them an email and call ME! The important thing here is to not just complain and bitch about things, but also give them praise when they have done the will of the people! Regarding INC – I agree, it is sad, but our President is showing more and more that he IS a Chicago Thug!

mkosin on February 13, 2009 at 5:29 PM

I hope Aaron Schock is my Governor some day.
WashJeff on February 13, 2009 at 3:22 PM

I agree. The sad thing is that, if he were elected governor, so long as he stays out of the clink he’d be a far sight better than quite a few of his predecessors.

Impressive guy…

D2Boston on February 13, 2009 at 6:07 PM

If he wants, this guy will be president. The problem is, we’ll have to wait at least 8 years before he’s eligible, and probably longer.

bilups on February 13, 2009 at 6:36 PM

If a Lightworker speaks in a Caterpillar plant and nobody listens, how the hell did we end up with this tool as POTUS!?!

SuperCool on February 13, 2009 at 6:51 PM

Jake Tapper is going to be stricken from “the list” if he keeps this up.

buckichick1 on February 13, 2009 at 6:53 PM

What the hell is this “save or create jobs” crap?

The word “save” wasn’t in there not too long ago.

How convenient. Now he can claim his stimulus works, even if it doesn’t create jobs.

What a freaking charlatan.

Four years ago, they slavered all over Putnam from Florida and he’s pretty much dropped below the radar. The same with this guy.

Not like you to pander to the commentariat, AP. I thought nothing pissed you off more than us ignorant, partisan rubes doubting the sacred magnificence of the polls? What gives?

Fwiw, these polls you’ve been running for the past week are the wildest batch of pure crap I’ve ever seen, with the pollster’s questions changing the numbers dramatically on the same day.

Jaibones on February 13, 2009 at 10:44 PM

As goes Peoria…?

Jaibones on February 13, 2009 at 10:46 PM

Rep. Schock is my congressman and I expect big things from him in the future. I’ve met him several times and he does impress. He communicates very well and gets a lot of support from the minority communities in Peoria. I have no trouble seeing this man as the next President to come from Illinois.

Oh! How could I have been so naive?! You aren’t doubting the ridiculous, worthless polls – you’re calling Schock a liar. How could I have imagined that you were taking a GOP politician at face value…what was I thinking?

Auditioning for DU?

A star is born.

Oppose the Congress “steal-from-us” package.

Ok, knock it off. It’s fine for the guys to ogle and drool over Palin and the hot economist chick, but saying a dude is hot…that’s just not right.

Fair’s fair, B. Besides, I got a little tingle on my leg just then…

Aaron is from my hometown, and I have a family member that has worked closely with his office, first as a local state representative and now as a member of the House of Representatives.

Yes, he has a staff (all congressmen do).

Yes, he has an office (all offices are reallocated after every election, and you get better office space generally based on your seniority) and Aaron ended up with a nice one, apparently a sign of GOP leadership favor.

Yes, staffs do keep careful count of calls and emails. The previous commenter was right – most people don’t contact their congress-person…unless they are steamed about something. My family member said that for every one call they receive, they generally view it as representing about 1,000 other people in the district. If a person cares enough to call/email…it means something to the congressman. If 10 call, they pick up their heads. 100…there is something going on. 1,000? Enormous interest back home.

Said family member also indicated that the office of the newest senator from Illinois, the incredibly underwhelming Rolan Burris, basically had his phone off the hook for days. Family member was contacting all House members’s and Senator’s offices on an unrelated matter…and Burris’ office was the only one that never picked up the phone. Surprise.

Aaron is considered quite the rising star here locally, and nationally. He is the real deal as far as the locals are concerned. Members of the minority community really respect him – he listens to them, treats them (and everyone) with courtesy and professionalism, and has gotten legislation through that benefits that community, while still remaining loyal to conservative principals.

What you saw in that clip is what you get – keep your eye on this one.

Peoria should be thankful they chose Rep. Aaron Schock to represent them.

I support parts of the bill. I think the 400/800 per person/family tax cut is a huge waste of money and should go to new school construction/refurbishment and other infrastructure projects that produce more jobs. I will buy a PS3 with my 400….I dont know how stimulative that will be.
