House vote on stimulus imminent, Update: All GOPers, seven Dems vote no

posted at 1:21 pm on February 13, 2009 by Allahpundit

They’re in the last throes of grandstanding on the House floor as I write this. ETA for the roll: 1:30 p.m. sharp, safely ahead of Madam Speaker’s departure time for that flight to Rome. Whew.

You can watch live at C-SPAN1. The Senate vote is tentatively scheduled for 5 p.m., but Roll Call says they may hold it open for hours afterwards in case they don’t hit the magic number of 60 on their first shot. Exit question: Does any House Republican dare vote for this crap sandwich? Phone numbers and e-mail addresses to come in an update, if so!

Update: Here’s a reassuring prognosis from Emanuel Cleaver, via Drudge: “Regardless of party, we all cast our votes with one hand and crossed our fingers with the other.”

Update: The line held. It passes 246-183, with all 176 Republicans (and seven Democrats) voting against. One Democrat voted “present.” A tribute to The One, perchance?

Being the pessimistic type, yeah, I think some GOPs just might. But, to be fair, I would guess more Democrats will cross over to No than GOPs vote Yea.

Great speech from Boehner. He paraphrases Obama, “This bill needs to be about jobs” but “it turned into a bill about spending, spending, spending.”

What’s it do for us? “Absolutely nothing.”

“We owe it to ourselves to get it right… I don’t think this is the way to do it.”

His only “slip” was “we’re not interested in growing the size of government”. Well, maybe now that you’re not in power . . .

LastRick on February 13, 2009 at 1:38 PM

If being “far right” means reading a one trillion dollar spending bill before you agree to it, then I must be the fringiest member of the right wing fringe.

72 pages added just last night, how much stimuli can you add to 72 pages? You wouldn’t sign a new car contract without at least a cursory knowledge of its contents, yet spending one trillion without knowing where the money is going to go is sensible?

Not sure if this is the way you intended to say it, but the way you talk it sounds like secession. Just to clarify (since I am an AZ citizen and have been watching the one we’re working on) this bill is not to leave the Union, but rather to declare our state’s rights under the 10th Amendment and to strip many of the powers the federal government has decided to exercise in recent years. This won’t relieve us of federal income taxes, but things they are trying to assert such as gun control, gay rights, etc. will not pass in AZ.
