Final stimulus vote in Senate imminent; Update: 57 yeses, three Dems still to vote

posted at 5:10 pm on February 13, 2009 by Allahpundit

The bomb’s set to drop at 5:30 p.m. 60 votes or bust, right? Wrong: Sherrod Brown’s in Ohio for his mother’s funeral and will be flying in later, which is why Reid’s planning to hold the vote open for hours after it’s done. If they get to 59 at 5:30, Brown will make it official tonight; if, in a surprise show of backbone, one of the centrists defects and they land at 58, presumably there’ll be a mad scramble to fly Teddy in from Florida. He’s scheduled to miss the vote — for now.

While we wait, here’s ProPublica’s line-by-line breakdown of what’s in the bill. Or, if you want just the dirty bits, try this. Live coverage is online at C-SPAN2, as usual.

Update: Because the vote’s being held open for Brown, we’re not going to get a final tally for hours yet. But Collins, Specter, and Snowe have all voted yes, and needless to say, no Democrat’s going to torpedo The One’s moment by switching. The deed is done.

Update: As of 6:20 p.m., there are 57 yes votes in the books with Bayh, Gillibrand, and of course Brown yet to show and add theirs. Done deal.

WashJeff on February 13, 2009 at 5:15 PM

if you just want the dirty bits, try this

Funny thing, no harvest mouse. Why not? As I wrote in the comments for that item, the $30 million wasn’t set aside for marshland restoration, marshland restoration isn’t primarily for the mouse, and the project wasn’t in Pelosi’s district. Now we can ask whether ensuring that low-lying residents and companies like Oracle (20 miles south of Pelosi-ville) aren’t flooded is what federal funds should go for. (The Bush administration’s 2003 actions on these projects seem to answer an emphatic, “Yes,” and, given the post-Katrina attitude towards flooding and the Army Corps of Engineers, I think most of the nation agrees.) But stretching the facts to make a good story isn’t going to help anyone’s case. I hope Hot Air won’t take The New Republic approach to correction and will instead will put a correction to this where everyone can see it, since spitting out false talking points is a good way to lose a debate. There’s plenty of fault to find without fudging facts, folks.

The Bush administration’s 2003 actions on these projects seem to answer an emphatic, “Yes.”

Actually, to be fair, Bush never said this would be a “stimulus.” Again, we can find fault with the methods of funding without opposing — or misrepresenting — the goal.

As expected, the cowardly, corrupt Democrat Oligarchs in the House of Barons passed the Harpy Harridan’s own bloated bill before she skips off (at taxpayer expense of course) for shopping in Rome.

While there is drama regarding the House of Lords vote, it will pass as well (can’t have friends of the Oligarchs get nothing). President Empty Suit will sign the Bill into law.

Liberals, Unions and illegal aliens will do the ‘Happy Happy Joy Joy’ Dance.

Taxpayers will take it in the shorts (again).

Pell grants for higher education $15,840,000,000

16 billion for ‘higher’ education. 16 billion divided by 350 million Americans = $46 per American…(I know not all Americans are enrolled at higher education institutions)

This will drive tuition thru the roof, cause more bloating in administrations, and do absolutely nothing to aid the payment of education costs unless you fit certain, uh, demographics.

Thanks Obama, you amoral ignoramous.

Whether or not this is the straw that breaks the camel’s back, odds are it’s going to take a lot longer than a few weeks, months, or years to kill off the whole country.

Sooner or later, some group somewhere, or set of groups, are going to figure out just how badly they’re going to be screwed by the stealthy re-negotiation of all of our debts and obligations. This is like a quiet bankruptcy proceeding, as assets are devalued beneath our feet and inflation is pushed off into the future.

But even if the result is that the house of cards of international finance collapses, there will still likely be a United States of America, still a constitutional government under whatever emergency measures or degrees of social and cultural fragmentation or suppression for many years to come. And lots else can happen in the meantime while we wait around for a talented president or two to make the hard choices to little thanks.

I copied this over from the House thread. I’ve always given this kind of talk pretty short shrift, till today. I’ve known this guy for 25 years and he is pretty astute.

Just got off the phone with my banker. Had sone personal stuff and then asked him what the bank’s position was on what is going down. His take is the same as ours and refreshingly honest about how the TARP and stimulus packages have been handled.. We discussed the odds of correcting anything politically, with ACORN and census diddling in the future. I was amazed when he said there has been some discussion of a territorial separation of states, based on both geography and financial solvency, and civil war. This guy is a common sense, no risk, stereotypical midwestern banker, not prone to hyperbole and certainly not violence prone. He seemed to feel things are going to get much, much worse on the financial side and a large number of people will eventually react violently, with an attempt to split the country in half. Not what I wanted to hear, but guess I asked for it.

A Republican party that added more than $30 trillion to the future debt in a time of boom has no credible answer but raw partisanship for opposing $800 billion in the swiftest downturn in employment since the Great Depression. That’s the bottom line. The party that campaigned for eight years on the principle that “deficits don’t matter” has no good faith standing to oppose a measure that provides the minimum to ensure some kind of bottom in the looming depression.

Respect Andrew Sullivan’s Authority!

Here’s an interesting question. Lay out what’s expected of you in each country, then take a straw poll of adults to see which “half” they’d rather live in. I’m guessing it splits about one-third/two-third. For half, it will be a clear choice to go right. For that additional 17%, they’ll think about it, then realize that they’ll be left with the remaining third.
