Video: The freaky triple deaky Joaquin Phoenix trainwreck interview

posted at 12:40 pm on February 12, 2009 by Allahpundit

For once, the AP’s reporting is spot on: It is indeed an instant classic. He’s either stoned out of his gourd, in the grip of a slow-motion nervous breakdown, or a better actor than we thought. Even more entertaining than the legendary Merry Miller/Holly Hunter meltdown, although that’s because Letterman’s in unusually good form. Exit question: Farrah Fawcett-esque freakout or Andy Kaufman-esque hoax?

Blowback

I hate it when they squabble their acting checks on drugs.

It had to be a joke..I can’t imagine them letting him out on stage if he was that obviously out of it when he met up with the stage manager etc…

I dunno…

I recall the heartbreaking interview that British talkshow host Michael Aspel did with Oliver Reed. The You Tube Video of that is here – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8J67LJLT1c and focuses on the drunken impromptu song, but Aspel was masterful as he gently but firmly confronted Reed about his most evident alcoholism.

Sadly that part hasn’t made the You Tube archives, but I’ll never forget it.

It appears that Joaquin is heading down the same road as his brother River.

Exit question: Does Allahpundit moonlight for Deceiver?

I remember watching The Merv Griffin show back in the 70′s when he had David Carradine as a guest. Carradine came out barefoot in rumpled white jeans and shirt, answered most questions with a few words. Later, when Griffin was talking to another guest Carradine just got up and walked offstage. Griffin just turned and gave him a wave, thanking him for stopping by, and the audience roared.

Not the first time; I recall him being… somewhat inebriated, to say the least, during one of his late night interviews for.. Either Gladiator or the film he did right after that one..
