The priorities of Democrats, exposed

posted at 5:25 pm on February 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Elected representatives on Capitol Hill complain that they have not yet received the final Porkulus write-up, but that’s because Democratic leadership on the Hill had more important people to consult.  US News reports that the Democrats sent the bill to K Street lobbying firms before getting it to the people who need to vote on Porkulus:

We’re receiving E-mails from Capitol Hill staffers expressing frustration that they can’t get a copy of the stimulus bill agreed to last night at a price of $789 billion. What’s more, staffers are complaining about who does have a copy: K Street lobbyists. E-mails one key Democratic staffer: “K Street has the bill, or chunks of it, already, and the congressional offices don’t. So, the Hill is getting calls from the press (because it’s leaking out) asking us to confirm or talk about what we know—but we can’t do that because we haven’t seen the bill. Anyway, peeps up here are sort of a combo of confused and like, ‘Is this really happening?’”

Well, why not?  Porkulus has to pass muster with the people really running the Democratic Party.  The only reason for this bill’s existence is to pay off traditional Democratic Party interest groups, and they had to vet the final product to make sure they all got their fair share.

I seem to recall a Democrat who claimed that lobbyists would play no role in his administration, and then appointed more than a dozen of them to key administration positions in the first two weeks.

Words.  Just words.

Obie must have given them a waiver, too, like his lobbyist appointments, so they could read appropriately edit the bill before anybody could see what’s in it.

And the American people told us they expected us to work together for fiscal responsibility, with the highest ethical standards and with civility and bipartisanship. After years of historic deficits, this 110th Congress will commit itself to a higher standard: pay as you go, no new deficit spending. Our new America will provide unlimited opportunity for future generations, not burden them with mountains of debt.

In order to achieve our new America for the 21st Century, we must return this House to the American people. So our first order of business is passing the toughest congressional ethics reform in history. This new Congress doesn’t have two years or 200 days. Let us join together in the first 100 hours to make this Congress the most honest and open Congress in history — 100 hours.

This openness requires respect for every voice in the Congress. As Thomas Jefferson said, ‘Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle.’ My colleagues elected me to be Speaker of the House — the entire House. Respectful of the vision of our Founders, the expectations of our people, and the great challenges that we face, we have an obligation to reach beyond partisanship to work for all Americans.

Let us all stand together to move our country forward, seeking common ground for the common good. We have made history, now let us make progress for our the America people.

–Screecher Pelosi, 1/4/2007

I guess that’s all out the window now, eh Nancy?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on February 12, 2009 at 5:44 PM

Explanation from Obama?
“With this bill we will create or save 4 million lobbying jobs.”

Glenn Jericho on February 12, 2009 at 6:27 PM

Just to clarify. When Obama said that lobbyists would not play a big role in his administration, he meant lobbyists who support Republicans. Of course he didn’t mean all lobbyists.

As Obama’s negatives begin to creep up, it’ll be because of the “honesty thing.”

If you haven’t figured out by now that such acts are par for the course for HopeNChange then I don’t know what else can be said.

Of course, Obamas followers wont care. They want this money spent and they don’t give a damn how expensive it is or how many lobbyists get their hands on it first.

TPM’s reports this from a Dem Hill Staffer:

It’s hard not to think that Gregg’s withdrawal, with the grumbling about the census and the stimulus, was not timed to cause the most damage possible to the Obama administration. Releasing the statement just as Obama took the stage in Peoria was clearly designed to undermine the President’s event. The fact he scheduled a presser only seems to confirm it. The classy exit would have been to wait til tomorrow afternoon to quietly bow out. Basically Gregg decided not just to politely decline, but rather to blow shit up and burn the bridge behind him. Do not think this portends good things for the wider political climate.

If the larger GOP strategy can be describe as putting all of their chips on “FAIL”, this has to be seen as a significant addition to that pile, no?

I don’t know that Gregg is that clever or vindictive, but we shall see who wins the pot in the long run, won’t we? It certainly doesn’t surprise me that a Hill Staffer thinks this is all a game of poker.

Interesting. Of course, I see no reason for the GOP to hold back. Better to go all in now to see what happens. They also might see the writing on the wall as regards the Dem/ACORN campaign ground game for 2010 and realize they need to go on offense now.

Classy? What would a Dem staffer know about class? Buttsniffers.

The classy thing would have been for Emanuel and Obama not to play politics with the stimulus and the census, and not to lie to Gregg and play him for a dupe.

He obviously felt that’s what they did, and he obviously does not appreciate it. He obviously is not a dupe, either. I love how he snapped it off in Rahm’s tail.

Does it occur to anybody, that –way back when– our favorite Barry and his liberal Marxist college buddies may have been sitting around, smoking whatever and eating Cheetos, and one of ‘em pipes up “No, really, I bet we COULD take over America and DO IT LEGALLY!”

I’ll bet there’s nothing illegal about the White House taking over the Census. I’ll bet it’s perfectly legal to establish Congressional Representation for the District of Columbia. I’ll bet there’s a whole raft of perfectly legal (or, at least, NOT CONSTITUTIONALLY PROHIBITED) proposals that are going to come up that will seem odd, confusing (“what on earth is is the purpose of THIS new bill??”).

By the time all the strange little bits of legislation are seen in the aggregate, our USA will indeed have become the USSA and we’ll have nationalized industry, a managed economy, and a President-for-Life.

Plausible? or Paranoid?

This is what happens when the Constitution is ignored and a SELF-DESCRIBED DUAL CITIZEN IS ILLEGALLY ALLOWED TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT. This country is no longer a Constitutional Republic. The Constitution is a meaningless document, the Supreme Court is a joke and we’re on our way to the United Socialist States of America. We’ve already got a state-run-media. The time to bitch was BEFORE THIS USURPER got elected. Now it’s just time to bend over and take one for the team. Someone said on another thread that Reid and Pelosi removed the section of the bill requiring employers to use E-Verify to ensure that “stimulus”-created jobs only go to American citizens and legal residents. Haven’t been able to find confirmation of this; there seems to be more than one version of the bill floating around. Anybody have any information on this?

The S-Chip bill that Obama signed into law the other day had eliminated the provision that recipients provide evidence of their U.S. citizenship. Apparently the Dims are determined that illegals keep getting all the U.S. taxpayer-funded goodies they can shovel out. As conditions in Mexico continue to deteriorate, this will guarantee that more and more illegals keep coming.
