Ride the Porkulus Rail to Harry Reidland!

posted at 10:10 am on February 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

When I want to drop my money in Vegas on useless machines, I prefer to at least have the slight chance of winning some of it back.  Thanks to a sleazy back-room deal between Barack Obama and Harry Reid, the city least in need of government bailouts will get a $8 billion pork project in the final version of Porkulus.  Now Southern California residents can have another way to lose their money, and we can all pay for the ride:

In late-stage talks, Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., pressed for $8 billion to construct high-speed rail lines, quadrupling the amount in the bill that passed the Senate on Tuesday.

Reid’s office issued a statement noting that a proposed Los Angeles-to-Las Vegas rail might get a big chunk of the money.

And what got cut to ensure Reid’s pork bonanza?

To tamp down costs, several tax provisions were dropped or sharply cut back. A provision popular with Republicans and the big business lobby that would have awarded about $54 billion to money-losing businesses over the next two years was instead limited to small businesses, greatly reducing its cost.

A $15,000 tax credit for anybody buying a home over the next year was dropped; instead, first-time homebuyers could claim an $8,000 credit for homes bought by the end of August. Car buyers could deduct the sales tax they paid on a new car but not the interest on their car loans.

I wasn’t a big fan of those provisions anyway, as they essentially subsidized the overextension of debt that helped create this crisis.  However, at least they provided something of an economic stimulus.  Instead of those provisions, we’re going to spend $12 billion on a train that will replace a one-hour flight or a four-hour drive (which I have done myself on several occasions). It will hurt the coach-bus business that provides charter services for group excursions, which will wind up hurting the economy instead of helping it.

The trains already run through Vegas, by the way.

Has Vegas had problems with people getting to its city?  Is this really the biggest priority for city infrastructure facing America at the moment?  Democrats like Harry Reid continue screeching about how the economic sky is falling, but then suck out enough money to fund a federal agency for a year to build a transportation corridor to a city no one has any trouble reaching.

Viva Por-kulus! Viva Por-kulus! Viva — viva — Por-kulus!

Update: I wrote $12 billion, but it’s actually $8.  Kind of like how downtown Vegas hotels discounted room rates to get the gamblers, I suppose.

Also, Michelle asks a good question.  Will all of those bailout recipients scolded by Barack Obama for planning Vegas meetings become good citizens again if they ride the Porkulus Rail to Sin City?

How about the Democrats just put a trillion into a slot machine and be done with it?

The slot machine has a better chance of paying off than this idiotic Bill the Democrats are going to pass.

They will pass another bill to cover the foreclosure/housing market to great fanfare. Something about taking advantage of a crisis, I think.

The “stimulus” rewards states for increasing their welfare rolls. The Dims are making it easier for people to get to Las Vegas and gamble away all their money, so that they can then go home and sign up for their new welfare entitlements, helping their state qualify to receive more federal “stimulus” money.

See how it all makes sense?

Don’t worry they haven’t bothered to repeal the laws that made lender give out loans to NINJAs… so what we have this year will just be happening again and again, even as the housing market slowly dies due to the ‘good idea’ that subsidizing those that can’t afford to keep up homes is something ‘smart’ to do. Of course once the system takes over the banks, that will be it for the economy as the fools put in charge of such things, like in Fannie and Freddie have demonstrated just how competent government is at regulating the economy. Not that this will stop the supporters of omnicompetent government from saying otherwise. Strange that… decry something done on one hand and then how competent government is on the other.

I keep telling you – liberals cannot resist overreaching. We can make this project the symbol of this horrible piece of legislation and hang it around Reid’s neck. Can we? Will we?

This is going to be the “House Banking Scandal” of this Congress IF we can get the information out to voters.

If only this Democrat $pending Bill were merely PORKULOUS, as terminal as this debt diagnosis is. This week’s gathering of the world’s leading CEOs in Washington behind closed doors witnesses the dice and splice of who gets what in the 21st Century of Global Socialism.

That there will be NO FREE ENTERPRISE and no ideological independence tolerated is the worst of it. We are being exterminated by overt and covert legislated means that will deny any recourse.

We’re all scared. You hid in that ditch because you think there’s still hope. But Blithe, the only hope you have is to accept the fact that you’re already dead. And the sooner you accept that, the sooner you’ll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function.[] All war [opposition] depends upon it.–Spiers, Band of Brothers

The Socialists pronounce the death of Reagan and the death of capitalism, the death of free enterprise, the death of innocence and life, the death of our Constitution, the death of “meaning” so as to wash their hands of responsibility for killing. Pierce their riddle “How can you kill someone/something that is already dead?” with Clinton’s answer. “It depends on the meaning of is.”

Hope exists in the FIGHT for preservation, aka conservatism. Conservatives hold the legacy of honorable heritage. Our Enlightened, Neo-Classical Revolutionary Founding Fathers united with the Common Sense working men and women to sacrifice and endure everything for their Glorious Cause, as yet only the DREAM that would spawn The Constitution of The United States of America for the prosperity of posterity.

Ah yes, this is really a good deal. Now all the downtown smog eaters, gang members and welfare cases can catch the fast train to Vegas where they can fence their stolen goods, cash their welfare checks, spend a night on the town and do a little gambling.

This sick-ass congress is insane and the actions are disgusting.

Maybe they can loan some money to the LA-San Francisco high speed train line, which also replaces a one-hour flight.

Why are these projects environmentally safe, cutting across desert or coastal areas, but a pipeline full of oil is not?

Is this rail line going to be serviced by Amtrak? If so, I guess we know how profitable it will be.

People like their $39 Southwest fares from LAX to LAS. And the Hollywood hoi polloi are never going to give up their chartered flights.

I actually think high-speed rail all over this country would be a fabulous idea. But if we have to rely on the government to provide it, I am not in the least bit hopeful it will be either profitable or efficient. When we were first building railroads in this country, and it was left to private enterprise to do it, the nation was criss-crossed with track in a matter of a few years. If we could leave it up to the private sector to build a high-speed rail system, it would have been finished already a couple of decades ago.

Why aren’t the casinos paying for this? They will benefit, why shouldn’t they be the investors?

Because they’re not stupid.

Few people will use it when they can drive there in four hours or fly there for less $ in one hour.

Trains are slow and expensive. Look at an Amtrak schedule and see how long it takes and how much it costs to get anywhere.

Trains work in Europe because everything is relatively close to everything else and connected to everything else. They don’t work here because of the size of this nation. Also, the Europeans move the majority of their freight on trucks and the majority of passengers on trains. That’s backwards.

And even if it’s a fast train, it will still be more expensive than flying. So why build in redundancy?

Harry Reid, as usual, is an idiot. This train is completely unnecessary and ridiculously expensive.

NoDonkey on February 12, 2009 at 11:37 AM

What utter BS. We have approx 12000 people here in St. Louis who HAVE jobs who will have to QUIT in March because OUR bus service can’t afford to keep doing the routes, and our lovely Sen McCaskill has done NOTHING for those people. Yet dirty harry gets millions for sin city? Yeah, the Obamessiah sure knows how to take care of his own. F*ck the people.

JustTruth101 on February 12, 2009 at 11:47 AM

I still fail to understand why they prop up some industries & not others.
Someone had it right above-make the casinos & investors build a supertrain if they want it.
This will probably be like the ‘awesome’ monorail in CA & WA. Oooooohhhh.
So now Congress will throw $$ at building something that puts others out of business.
Kinda like their dairy buyout- bailout dairy farmers & meanwhile you screw me over when I try to sell my calves this fall bcs you’ve ‘dumped’ all these dairy cattle (very icky-tasting,if I might add) on the market, driving my price further in the hole.
I need LDPs just like farmers get.
Maybe I’d feel better. :(

By the way, the “Las Vegas Chief” is run by Amtrak and leaves from Union Station, but it has rubber tires and runs on highways. It’s a bus, not a train.

Not that this means anything, but correctness of fact is always good.

unclesmrgol on February 12, 2009 at 11:58 AM

They’ve been talking about this mythical high speed train for a decade now. I doubt it will ever get built. Or if it does, the price will be $28B, not $8B. Anyone who has driven on I-15 knows it is a tough topography to build a high speed train on.

And there is absolutely no need for it. You can drive from LA to LV in 4 hours or fly in 1 hour.

Honestly, I’ve always thought it was a good idea too. Contrary to what is written above, it is painful getting to/from Las Vegas – especially driving. With that said, I don’t understand why the casinos don’t take the initiative. They might even be able to get a waiver so that there is gambling on the train the whole way. Then again, they are in the business to make money so maybe they know something the legislators don’t know – that it is a losing prospect.

NoDonkey on February 12, 2009 at 11:37 AM

Amtrak closed it’s Bismarck station some years ago in ND. If you want to hop on the train, you gotta go way up N to Williston. It is also just like the bus-it takes forever to get anywhere & it’s more expensive.
Compared to flying out of Bismarck (no competition), the train is somewhat cheaper, but it’s basically like the bus ride from hell.
I still drive across country from ND to places like S IN bcs it’s actually cheaper than anything else I have the choice of.
Much of the goods moved in America are still by truck & though I’m not sure of the #s between goods moved on trains vs trucks, I bet trucks is higher.
Many railway lines were disassembled in the ’80s.
Farmers in our region have to pay what the monopolizing train companies charge bcs they are at their mercy. There is no competition.
Trains are just not as competitive & versatile in their ability to move goods & people as autos are.

Badger40 on February 12, 2009 at 12:30 PM

I think they could be tho if we could advance beyond these antiquated locomotives and move to high-speed bullet trains. Those who point out that airlines have largely rendered train travel obsolete for passengers probably do make a valid point (tho there’s always your handful of folks who are afraid to fly), but why can’t we move more freight by high-speed rail? It would have to be faster and cheaper, AND it would relieve some of the congestion on interstates. Of course this would put truckers out of work . . . heck, I don’t know the answer! All I do know is that if we’re going to build a high-speed rail system in this country, it needs to be left to the private sector or the thing will be hemmhoraging (sp?) cash before the first shovel breaks ground.

You’re kidding, right? I lived in Long Beach for 5 years and made the drive to Vegas about a dozen times, even driving there and back in the same day one time when my son and his girlfriend came out on Spring Break. It’s a boring but easy drive. I would never have taken a train and lost the flexibility of having my own car. This is a disaster.

PatMac on February 12, 2009 at 1:43 PM

You can drive from LA to LV in 4 hours or fly in 1 hour.

Exactly and what all insipid Democrat transportation plans have shown us is that people like to be in their own cars, regardless of Democrat’s attempt to herd us onto mass transit.

Which of course, Democrat politicians will never use. Just like they don’t drive the clown cars they want the rest of us to buy.

redfoxbluestate on February 12, 2009 at 2:57 PM

I’ve often thought that a high-speed rail between LA (or San Diego) and Vegas would be awesome. The drive is brutal during the summer – not the length, but the heat. As you go up that pass beyond Bakersfield, there’s cars pulled over with their hoods up every few hundred yards.

There’s nothing out there, really – just heat, mountains, and sand. It would be perfect for a high-speed rail, which would be faster than a plane (given that you wouldn’t have go to through security, check luggage, etc) and might be able to get you closer to the downtown.

That all said, if it’s a worthwhile project, private enterprise will do it. If not, then there’s no reason to waste taxpayer dollars.

Roxeanne de Luca on February 12, 2009 at 4:59 PM

The nice thing about the train, from the point of view of the casinos, is that you only go where it takes you. If you’ve got a car you can leave the casino and go around on your own. The casinos can’t have that; they really want you to take the train.
