Too good to check: Reid and Pelosi at war over stimulus?

posted at 7:50 pm on February 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

The exciting Rashomon-like conclusion to Ed’s post about stimulus intrigue among the House Democrats. Why, oh why, would these two morons be playing dirty with each other when almost half the country’s already willing to replace Congress with a group of people picked out of the phone book?

I have no answer save this.

According to a half dozen Congressional aides and members, Reid went before the cameras Wednesday to announce a stimulus deal before Pelosi had agreed on all the details of school construction financing.

“It’s ruffled feathers, big time,” said a House Democrat speaking on condition of anonymity. “The speaker went through the roof.”

Added one House Democratic aide: “He tried to roll her and she knew it.”…

The problem, according to people familiar with the situation, was that Pelosi hadn’t completely signed off on the Senate’s approach to restoring some of the $21 billion in school construction funding. House Democrats are pushing to have school-repair funding listed as a recurring expense; Senate Republicans want such an allocation to be a one-time-only deal…

People close to Pelosi painted a different picture – one that portrays Reid as the one being rolled. Pelosi, they say, strategically permitted Reid to make his announcement – and then held up her approval to extract a slightly better deal.

Reid has all the leverage; if the Republican three in the Senate walk away, the bill’s dead. Note also that all the leaks here are coming from the House, which shouldn’t be the case if Pelosi put one over on him. He must have been the one doing the rolling. But … why? Why jeopardize good relations with her when they’ve still got umpteen Obama agenda items coming down the pike to push through Congress?

There is no conflict here other than Reid was in front of the cameras but ‘forgot’ to invite Pelosi to stand with him.

It’s almost too difficult to comprehend that these two cretins actually control much of the legislative process in the US. Who the hell votes for these freaks?

Maybe Reid as well as the One are realizing what a lefty pain Nancy is and what trouble she will be for the two of them when they want to appear moderate and bipartisan. And what it could mean in 2010 and 2012.

Why would the bill be dead?

SoulGlo on February 11, 2009 at 8:03 PM

One of two things can be happening here:

The more unlikely scenerio is that Dems are making it appear that Harry and Nancy are fighting each other only to have the messiah come in and make things right. Notice how all of a sudden, support for the bill was better after Obama was hitting softballs in the batting cage and called it a press conference.

I say unlikely because Reid has a chance to be unseated. Nancy on the other hand is pretty safe.

The more likely scenerio is that they’re both narccisistic and trying to one up each other. They are hoping Obama will save their hides but he may throw both under the bus to save his own image.

I find this to be more likely because they’re all self centered and trying to grab as much power as possible and push their agenda before America wakes up.

Lay-Z on February 11, 2009 at 8:04 PM

They each have the ego that they want to be the big kahuna in Congress.

carbon_footprint on February 11, 2009 at 8:04 PM

Big deal. A battle between two traitorous, free-spending political hacks is nothing more than a distraction. No matter how much they snarl and bicker, the end result will be the same: Osama Obama will get his economy-killing bill, all the bottom-feeders in Congress will get their pork, and the nation will be one step closer to becoming a third-world banana republic led by a thug.

Laugh, suckers.

MrScribbler on February 11, 2009 at 8:05 PM

I say we give them baseball bats and lock them in a room together, saying we’ll let them out when they’ve got a comprimise. Hopefully, they’ll club each other unconscious before that happens.

SoulGlo on February 11, 2009 at 8:03 PM

Apparently he does need 60 votes to accept the report and proceed to vote on it. Didn’t think you could filibuster a conference committee report, but maybe there is something preliminary. If it’s only a majority, he’d be fine with 51, and wouldn’t need RINOs.

But, again he and Obama wanted 80 votes in the Senate, and got 61 (so far). The more “bipartisan” he appear, the more he could pick up another GOP vote or two.

Fox News is reporting Senator Mitch McConnell late this afternoon insisted that Republican senators let porkulus go to a vote on the Senate floor without a fight. McConnell apparently reasoned that obstructing the vote would make the GOP look bad and it would be better for the plan to pass and fail than be stopped cold by the GOP. Of course, there would be no guarantee of a successful obstruction given Specter, Snowe, and Collins’ support, but some Senators were frustrated by what they perceived as a McConnell’s insistence that the Republican conference sit on its hands.

Read on the Poltico that the fat bastard Charlie Rangel got a good chuckle, saying “Senate Democrats don’t know everything that is in the bill…” which leads me to conclude there are still more bad surprises to come.

It is clear to me there will be a major push for strict gun control (civilian disarmament). I am certain the pols know that sooner or later someone is going to figure out how they are screwing us and don’t want us to have any guns while the screwing gets worse.

Robert Mugabe gave them the most modern playbook example. It is no wonder Chris Dodd is a fan of Hugo Chavez.

Once the political class and criminals have a monopoly on force, kiss your butt goodbye if you don’t follow orders.

If only it were true. Sorry, this little tiff might just add a little more pork.

Notice everything dumped from the bill so far has been something for consumers (tax breaks, education)and NOTHING has been removed that is for Government (ACORN, Medical spying, Government buildings, green cars for gov., etc.). Every time someone complains too loudly, consumers get the shaft (not that I agreed with those provisions, but they were certainly more preferable than AmTrak, ACORN, Medical records spying, Smithsonian Institute, Ice breakers, green cars for gov. workers, Home Land Security building and furniture, NOAA, US Marshalls facilities, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management facilities, National Computer Center, etc.).

Bottom line: Taxpayers Screwed.

And the silliest thing of all is all those o minions that believe this Democrat Porkfest is going to mean something good for them! Boy are they going to be p*ssed when they learn that DC is getting a wonderful face lift and they are getting NOTHING.
