$789.5 billion: Stimulus deal reached

posted at 12:02 pm on February 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

In keeping with the centrism-for-centrism’s-sake nature of the “compromise,” they appear to have settled on a dollar amount before settling on the actual mix of tax cuts and spending of which that dollar amount will be comprised. Sounds like some of the tax relief was shaved off, predictably, in order to make way for more education spending, but details are forthcoming. Stand by for updates.

Courtesy of this morning’s “Washington Journal,” here’s GOP Rep. Tom Price warning of deals being struck secretly in smoke-filled rooms. The boss and Red State are similarly peeved that the GOP wasn’t included in conference committee negotiations. But … why would they be? The final deal was always going to be some mix of the House and Senate bills, which collectively drew three Republican votes out of some 240 members of Congress. Snowe, Specter, and Collins were all in on these negotiations. At this point, they’re the only ones who count. Click the image to watch.

Update: Feel free to kid yourself that you might change their minds by calling or e-mailing them, but don’t be surprised if you find a busy signal.

“I haven’t gotten through. Calls are like 10-to-1 against,” sniffed one Senate aide. He’s annoyed as a result of having to actually “learn the phone numbers” of those offices he wants to call, instead of just dialing 0. Hardships.

A rep for Collins told us their offices are swamped, both in Maine and in D.C. Collins’ spokesman Kevin Kelley said most are calling to thank Collins for her support.

“I can’t tell you exactly how many calls we have received, though, if this is any indication, … we have three incoming lines which have been continuously busy for several days now, … and shortly after the voice mailbox is emptied, it fills again.”

theguardianii on February 11, 2009 at 12:06 PM

Why would the Democrats want Republicans involved if they attend to follow their principles (i.e., spending is the way to grow the economy)?

If we controlled the levers of power and had a bill to lower capital gains, corporated income taxes and make the Bush tax cuts permanent, would we want that bill watered down with spending?

No, nothing’s going to change their minds and the volume of complaints may make them even more stubborn. The purpose isn’t to change the minds of the RINOS or the Dems, but to send a message to the rest of the Republicans and make the Dems nervous.

What is Congress’s approval rating now, anybody heard?

The youngest says 39!! The oldest says 42!!

I say great – now let’s see About $3000 apiece.
Tack on 30 years of interest on borrowed interest and
in 30 years you should get a bill from the government for
about $150,000 or more. They both said in unison “that sucks”.

I think if this layed out this way in Ross Perot style infomercial then
you would not get much support for this porkdoggle.

From the ABC article:

The compromise scales back the tax credits for auto and home purchases and other tax cuts.

So, it “scales back” the only parts of the behemoth that would actually stand a chance of stimulating economic activity. Interesting, that.

Blacklake on February 11, 2009 at 12:21 PM

Bastards took out the tax credits for buying a home or writing off car loan interest.

There are large inventories of unsold homes and unsold cars all over the country. The government could have done something relatively inexpensive to encourage qualified people to fix that problem.

That would have returned tax money to taxpayers (shouldn’t conservatives see that as a good thing?) and by exhausting the inventory, get industries moving again.

But billions for ACORN and establishment of socialized medicine was more important than giving employed American taxpayers a break….bastards.

People like Limbaugh and Malkin helped Obama win. McCain gave them a VP nominee that they loved, but they still slagged him up unti the day of the election.

I actually lost some of my enthusiasm for Palin when she was on Limbaugh’s show. He tossed her softballs, one of which was an opportunity to bash McCain’s campaign and the way they handled her intro. She didn’t bash McCain, but she didn’t tell Limbaugh to knock it off either.

Can we get beyond blaming anyone but McCain for his loss in the election?

McCain is the one responsible for getting people to like/support/vote for him. Limbaugh, Malkin, et al are not responsible for helping anyone they don’t like, they are their own people.

Anyone who disliked McCain (I do) and sat at home on election day (I didn’t) and can sleep with a clear conscience, then they have no one to answer to. McCain is responsible for his own loss – not anyone else.

McCain is the one responsible for getting people to like/support/vote for him. Limbaugh, Malkin, et al are not responsible for helping anyone they don’t like, they are their own people.

Do you take the same enlightened view on Palin bashers? If not, why?

Trent1289 on February 11, 2009 at 12:42 PM

Actually, let’s not derail this thread. Forget that last question.

Trent1289 on February 11, 2009 at 12:43 PM

From Rasnussen:

Seventy-four percent (74%) of male voters have more confidence in themselves than the average member of Congress. Sixty-one percent (61%) of female voters feel that way.

Seventy-four percent (74%) of GOP voters, 73% of those not affiliated with either party and 58% of Democrats say they know better.

How sad that only 58% of Democrats trust themselves over a member of congress.

Dumb question, but can we repeal any of this shyte in 2010?

The beads of sweat on your brow would indicate otherwise.

All good points. Clear out your basement for me, I’ll be heading down there.

Palin was the VP candidate and had what, six weeks to make an impact? The only resaon McCain received a lot of the votes he did (including me) was because he had Palin on the ticket. Even so, my statement stands, McCain is the one who is responsible for his own loss.

The ‘pundits’ are just that. Anyone who allows their actions to be dictated by them, on either side of the aisle, is an idiot.

As to my view being “enlightened”, I don’t know about all that. Or were you just being an ass?

the potential would surely be there — the ease to do so? not so much …

Interestingly enough, there are very few basements here in San Antone, due to the pretty much concrete slab this entire area sits upon. Kinda the opposite reason they don’t have basements in New Orleans.

But you are welcome to use my guest house. There’s a pool and a pond out there.
