Video: Specter declares that Porkulus needed more time for hearings
posted at 1:38 pm on February 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Okay … then why didn’t Arlen Specter demand hearings? At the very least, he could have forced more debate by opposing the cloture vote yesterday. Instead, he uses this lame excuse after Bloomberg found an embarrassingly objectionable provision in Porkulus yesterday:
Got that? Specter missed this because of a “rush to judgment,” a phrase first made popular by the late Johnnie Cochran in the OJ Simpson murder trial in 1995. It’s no less of a bad excuse here, mainly because Specter enabled the “rush” himself. Specter has survived a bout with cancer, which Megyn Kelly notes, and wonders why Specter would support a bill that forces doctors to get federal approval on treatments before discussing them with their patients. The answer? Specter apparently never read the bill before agreeing to cloture.
Here’s what Bloomberg found:
One new bureaucracy, the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, will monitor treatments to make sure your doctor is doing what the federal government deems appropriate and cost effective. The goal is to reduce costs and “guide” your doctor’s decisions (442, 446). These provisions in the stimulus bill are virtually identical to what Daschle prescribed in his 2008 book, “Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis.” According to Daschle, doctors have to give up autonomy and “learn to operate less like solo practitioners.” …
Hospitals and doctors that are not “meaningful users” of the new system will face penalties. “Meaningful user” isn’t defined in the bill. That will be left to the HHS secretary, who will be empowered to impose “more stringent measures of meaningful use over time” (511, 518, 540-541)
What penalties will deter your doctor from going beyond the electronically delivered protocols when your condition is atypical or you need an experimental treatment? The vagueness is intentional. In his book, Daschle proposed an appointed body with vast powers to make the “tough” decisions elected politicians won’t make.
The stimulus bill does that, and calls it the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research (190-192). The goal, Daschle’s book explained, is to slow the development and use of new medications and technologies because they are driving up costs. He praises Europeans for being more willing to accept “hopeless diagnoses” and “forgo experimental treatments,” and he chastises Americans for expecting too much from the health-care system.
Basically, it tells Specter that he should have accepted death rather than expensive treatment, and that he’s a bad American for having survived. His doctors would have faced penalties for attempting to cure him if the FCCCER didn’t approve their work.
And Specter voted for it. What a boob!
He’s not the only boob who didn’t read the bill before voting for an end to debate:
The clueless lead the clueless on Capitol Hill, and it will cost us a trillion dollars to watch the circus.

Does anyone have a fax or snail mail address for AARP’s executive staff and board of directors? (The web form I found is worthless). I’d like to press for a written statement from AARP regarding their position on this matter.
I think 60 Plus, the RNC or someone should use this issue aggressively against AARP. Take out ads on TV/radio and beat it like a drum.

Impossible to say who is the greater, total fool here. Obviously neither man has read the bill, particularly this portion of this abomination. It’s a sad state of affairs when I know more about it, just from the internet and talk radio…and it’s not even my job.
The Congress is chock full of absolute idiots. No wonder the Dems want the (un)Fairness Doctrine back. Then we citizens could be as uninformed as our so called legislators. I think I just need to go throw up.

Tester almost makes Specter look competent.
Get this, I decided to look up some information on Jon Tester who is now a member of the Senate Banking Committee.
Work Experience:
Butcher Shop Assistant
Organic Farmer
Educaiton:

So this former butcher shop janitor turned organic farmer with a bachelors in music is a member of the Senate Banking Committee.
I feel better already.

Mark Garnett on February 10, 2009 at 2:51 PM
Decide on what date you wish to show up on the steps of the Capitol with friends and neighbors and their friends and family and just do it. First, send an email to everyone you know and have them send the email to everyone they know and so forth. It shouldn’t take too long to organize it, and a Youtube video would probably help.
belad on February 10, 2009 at 2:52 PM
I agree. Check this out!
Assembling the Divided We Fail coalition of business, labor and senior-citizens’ groups was no mean feat. Keeping it together could prove vital to the success of health reform.
Divided We Fail formed in 2007 when the AARP, the Business Roundtable, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) joined forces with the goal of pressuring the presidential candidates and Congress to commit to addressing the chronic problems facing the U.S. healthcare system.
“The new administration and Congress cannot succeed in solving these huge problems if the political and public will does not exist. Divided We Fail is committed to ensure that the environment for action does exist,” AARP President and CEO Bill Novelli said recently.
But while the coalition has spent millions on grassroots organizing, advertising campaigns and public relations, the groups that make up its membership have yet to face their biggest challenge: holding their alliance together as healthcare reform moves from a broadly defined goal to actual legislation that inevitably will choose winners and losers.
Winners: Unions
Losers: Seniors

Don’t forget, the GOP can never get good PR while the neo-Pravda media are around. Just look at how BHO has pointed to the Republicans as the cause of all problems and complained about how they were hurting his poor socialism bill, even as he already had the votes to pass it.

Ok, after watching the woman ask for a new car and kitchen yesterday I have one question. Where can I send the bill for the new transmission for my truck? I mean, really, it is my truck, and American made, F-250. It will be my personal effort to support the “Stimulus”. I want only the $3158 to pay for the high grade towing package tranny. It is not my fault “sic” that I got screwed by Cottman Transmission on my last one. Come on Pres. Obama, I am just one of the little people you promised a break. Is Specter mentally competent? I am not attempting to be cruel or unkind, I really am posing this question due to his irreverant and many irrational proclamations of late: is this man mentally well or not?
He said he voted for this Porkulus mess for a number of reasons he then can’t support and has not appeared to even understand what is in the legislation, yet he’s voting for it. He’s used a very noteworthy Harvard economist to substantiate that Porkulus merits him supporting it — while it’s been proven that that very economist OPPOSES IT and opposes it adamantly.
Now he’s saying the legislation needs more time yet he still voted for it.
Maybe Specter needs to just go home and get comfortable while he allows the Democrats and Obama to deprive him of any healthcare he may need because he’s “old”.

It is my firm belief that SOBama thinks that tax cuts are pork, as per his speech last night when he said-”Tax cuts well– those are in there, we couldve just left those out.” and the way that the entire Democratic party seems to be against tax cuts. IMHO

Angry Dumbo on February 10, 2009 at 6:41 PM
YES, I read that a bit ago, too. Then bleak ladies from ACORN “picketing” D.C. appeared sighing how they were not getting “any five billion” in this legislation, showing again just how untrustworthy and unreliable this group (ACORN) actually is.
Because — becoming an ongoing characteristic here by nearly all Democrats — the little ladies were lying and ACORN is, indeed, getting $4.1 Billion in Obama’s PORKULUS — just think of that as the money that they won’t be spending to replace your mother’s or wife’s hip or won’t be spending to get you your pacemaker if you should need one.
S on February 10, 2009 at 6:42 PM
That is $4.1 BILLION. BILLION. To ACORN.
While stripping medical care, even essential care, from the elderly. I’m wondering how it is Obama and Nancy and Harry are defining “elderly” — probably everyone (except Congress) under fifty.
S on February 10, 2009 at 6:44 PM
Ooops, “over fifty.”
Though “everyone under fifty” might work in their minds, too.
S on February 10, 2009 at 6:44 PM
Allow me to ask if Ted Kennedy is going to receive any ongoing medical care, since treatment for “a brain tumor” is pretty steep. Just wondering. Also, he’s “old” so there’s that. And what about Nancy? She’s getting on in years…
S on February 10, 2009 at 6:45 PM
The Fox News report I saw noted ACORN would be in a pool of recipients (expanded under the bill from governments to non-profits [read "extortion outfits"]) eligible to receive $4.2 billion and then there was another program with $1 billion too.
Changing topics slightly, it appears that the bill will not get out of conference until next week. It’s time to get word out about Minnick’s proposal. With a long weekend in the dead of winter and few other distractions, this thing might get some attention.

mikeyboss on February 10, 2009 at 7:16 PM
Everyone should stop and think about this, including the hapless, greedy Democrats who favor PORKULUS whatever their causes may be:
How long does it take ANYone to amass ONE BILLION DOLLARS? The few billionaires among our U.S. population worked at it (mostly all in entertainment and media otherwise) for a while, had millions, kept at it, then had a billion, kept at it, maybe reached $1.8 Billion which is still a huge amount of money.
But think about just how much “$4.1 BILLION” actually is. And that’s just a drop in the bucket of this overall PORKULUS mess.
I read yesterday (no link today, didn’t save it), but anyway, I read yesterday that IF YOU SAVED $1,000. A DAY since the time of Christ, TODAY you would still not have the amount of money that PORKULUS involves.
S on February 10, 2009 at 7:16 PM
Right. The Democrats want physicians to be their employees, like the rest of us, their slaves.
The healthcare crud that’s in PORKULUS is horrifying. Doctors, practicing medicine by Democrat’s playbook.
