Born Again Americans?
posted at 5:45 pm on February 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Apparently, some of our fellow Americans only acknowledge themselves as such when their candidates win election. This collection of sunshine patriots have launched their website, proclaiming themselves “Born Again Americans,” led by television producer Norman Lear:
Born Again American is committed to the rebirth and re-expression of citizenship through informed and thoughtful activism. It is an initiative of Declare Yourself, a national non-partisan, non-profit (501(c)3) organization dedicated to increasing young voter participation and civic involvement. Declare Yourself’s on-line voter registration tool has been used by almost four million people since 2004. Declare Yourself grew out of the 2003’s Declaration of Independence Road Trip that toured an original 1776 copy of the Declaration to schools, town halls, and other locations all over the country.
Our founder, TV producer and philanthropist Norman Lear, was talking with Academy Award-winning songwriter Keith Carradine one night, and the Born Again American video was, well, born. It took the efforts of Director Mark Johnson of Playing for Change, Producer Brent Miller, and 16 performers and two choruses to bring Keith’s song to life in 14 iconic locations around the USA. The singers and musicians, non-professionals all, were chosen because they are living the lyrics in these troubled times, not just performing them.
I don’t need to sign the pledge on the website, because unlike all of these sudden Americans, I didn’t stop being American. My passion for my country and my pride in it doesn’t start and stop depending on which party controls Congress and the White House. Frankly, anyone who needs to experience a “rebirth” of their Americanism is someone on whom we can’t rely when things get tough, anyway — so who needs them?
Plus, there’s something creepily religious about the phrase “Born Again American” that appears to emphasize Barack Obama as their secular Messiah. There’s nothing at all American about falling into cults of personality. Maybe if they’d taken a little more pride in their American heritage, they’d already know that.
Fittingly, the acronym for this new organization is BAA — perfect for the sheeple that join it.
Update: Yes, it does sound depressingly familiar.

Guys, this is fantastic.

This is in the same league as the TV ads for the “USAService.ORG” nonsense. These people think they invented volunteers and service organizations as if this kind of thing has not been going on in America on a grand scale since before the nation was founded. Arrogance.

What’s odd is that the same set of people who are up in arms over this have wished the President’s failure, have declared his election means “the end/death/destruction/vaporization of America.” Have accused the American people of revolutionizing the country towards socialism. There’s been a decided LACK of love of country spewing from the right in all kinds of places. Is making the t-shirt the threshold that pushes folks over the edge or, more likely, are you hypocritical hacks.

There’s no doubt about it. He laid out the possibility that he couldn’t straighten out what is wrong with the country (as he sees it) in one term in his victory speech!
Remember how Bush turncoat Scott McClellan claimed he became disillusioned after he realized that Karl Rove was going to be in “permanent campaign” mode (but stuck around and collected his paychecks anyway)? Anyone put a camera and microphone in his fat mug lately and asked him how he feels about his boy Obama giving David Axxholerod a White House post?

A glaring example of the transient and emotional core of the left.
Born again being a terms used to describe a deep, lasting, eternal commitment to something higher than one’s self.
To the left, it’s nothing more than a catchy, fun, temporal fad.
Explains a lot.

So “loving our country” involves cheering as it is pushed into bankruptcy, socialism and subservience to terrorists simply because Osama Obama, that worthless, arrogant fool, is now president?
You would have been advocating loyalty to King George as true patriotism back in 1775, clown.

Seriously, STFU. Some days your comments have credence and contain a certain level of interest and on other days you sound like a putz. Today is one of the latter.
sherry on February 10, 2009 at 7:09 PM
My kind of loyalty was to one’s country, not to its institutions or its officeholders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to. Institutions [and officeholders] are extraneous, they are its mere clothing, and clothing can wear out, become ragged, cease to be comfortable, cease to protect the body from winter, disease, and death.

I can’t WAIT to see a co-workers son wear that in our office. I am going to tease him about it to the point he cries.
And the sad part is, I know he bought one already. He is such an obama-head that he was trying to debate me on it when B.O. was running. I cut him off at the legs but when B.O. won, I looked at him and smiled as he is jumpingup and down and said… wait, the fat lady hasn’t sang yet. I am still smiling but I think the wait is coming to a end soon.

On another note I saw Obama tonite make the point that he won the election and the fact that no GOP reps voted for the stimulus bill was a sign that nothing changed from the last 10 years. Seems this may not be the best way to be bipartisan.
In the end we know it was never about truly being bipartisan. That was all a lie and a distortion.

Your statement makes no sense. It’s specifically a love of America that forces us to defend the very principles being stepped on by Obama and the democrats.
Wanting the most left president in history to fail in his goal of remaking America into a European shithole or worse not only speaks of one’s love of country, but common sense. If Obama’s goal had been the strengthening of our freedoms and liberties, of making government a servant to the people instead of making people subservient to government than I would support him. Obviously, I think even you know he has no intention of doing anything remotely in the spirit of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.
I don’t need a specific party in the White House to be an American, as apparently these poor brainwashed souls do.
“Born Again Americans” is nothing more than community organizing on a national scale.

It’s all he’s ever done, it’s all he knows to do.
The frightening thing about his “rallies” in Florida and Indiana was that those videos actually represented the crowds in both; in other words neither video is an isolated incident. The people were there to touch the hem of his garment and beg for money.
FYI – if you watch the very end of the other clip ((link)), pay close attention to the blonde woman to Obama’s left. At the 55 second mark, she breathlessly mouths the words, “I love you Barack.”
After watching that spectacle, only one quote comes to mind…This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we’ll be lucky to live through it.

If the President is planning crazy things, then yes I wish him to fail. Wishing that the president fails to nationalize the greatest nation in the history of the world is hardly irrational.
No, accused the American government of revolutionizing the country towards socialism against the will of the people. I tend to think Americans that are capitalists even if they don’t realize it.
Disagreeing with liberal policies, however stridently, does not prove us unpatriotic. Conservative arguments against these policies are formed based on the liberties outlined in our founding documents. Are we throwing shoes at the President or undermining American foreign policy abroad? No…didn’t think so.
The T-shirt isn’t a threshold, but it is an indicator. If someone is only proud to be American if they get exactly what they want then they are a fickle idiot.
We practice abortion, permit illegal immigration, nationalize discriminatory practices against whites/men, tax the hell out of business, etc…but I still love America enough to go to war to defend her.

Dugan, I was trying to avoid watching it but decided to give it a look. She not only mouths the words you mentioned but blows kisses towards him.
It’s ironic that the candidate of the secular left would end up with a quasi religous figure in the White House who attracts a following not unlike those of the Pope and others. The secular intelligentsia of our universities that fawn over him as though he is the second coming of Jesus. Notice how quick he was to exclaim his belief in “the power of prayer.” I say this because in my mind and statistically his background and education would indicate that he would, not unlike his ivy league peers, would have a tendency towards the opposite.
Now I ask this. Are liberals and leftists manipulating religous or faith based rhetoric and mannerisms for political gain? More specifically has Obama undertaken this manipulative method? One can see already that Obama also manipulates his phonetic style in these settings by speaking with a slight Southern twang.

No doubt in my mind they are. Obama’s “cloak of religion” is just one of his many guises. Reverend Wright’s church was simply a means to an end for him. It served two purposes, 1. gave him street cred in Chicago, and 2. wrapped him in the cloak of religion. But the real reason he attended was to further his career.
You also have to consider the sheer narcissism of Obama. In the context of those videos, notice he doesn’t dispel their fawning reactions, or lower their expectations of him. Unfortunately, narcissism is very, very dangerous at the level he is at right now.
dugan on February 10, 2009 at 8:17 PM
The overall national commitment of this “stimulus” crime is composed of about $1 trillion in stimulus packages, about $3 trillion in lending and spending, and $5.7 trillion in agreements to provide aid.
$10 Trillion!
Gonna be one hell of a bill when it comes due.
Guess they plan to pay it with “Born Again Dollars.” *
Even IF every one of the bastards who voted for this “stimulus” crime is voted out of office in 2010…it’ll take a lot more than a mid-term election to try to get things back on an even keel…will take a decade or longer for even paltry results at undoing the damage.

Every empire comes to an end — it’s a part of life on the planet. The American Empire will someday come to a close just as surely as the British, Roman, and Grecian before it. It is folly to believe it will last forever. The question is, who’s going to be the leader who loses it?
In instituting policies that may have been the difference between only one devastating terrorist attack and several additional crippling ones, George W. Bush protected America. Obama has taken steps already to reverse those policies, and is trying to placate Islamists who have no interest in making nice-nice because his middle name is Hussein and he doesn’t wear a cowboy hat. The notion that peace can be achieved unilaterally is insane, but it looks like he has the Carterian model in mind.
Wishing the President’s failure in using crises to fundamentally transform a country that doesn’t need transforming is different than wishing death and defeat on the nation’s own armed forces, which many Bush haters unrepentently did.
If you got a million dollars every time a “progressive” said “I hope President Bush succeeds,” your net worth wouldn’t change a nickel.
Obama’s political mentors are revolutionary socialists. That’s a FACT — read his maddog autobiography (the first one). Before becoming a national figure, he expressed his disappointment that nobody could turn the trick of twisting the Constitution to endorse the idea of wealth redistribution. For all of his talk of bipartisanship, he has a meager record of being on the same page with authentic conservatives regarding controversial issues. You know about his habit of voting “present.” Now that he’s got the power, he can’t. So which way is he leaning? 33 degrees left, natch.
Obama intends to use this crisis to get people used to the idea that capitalism (as we know it) is a zero-sum game, and that he’s the man to shift the advantage to the middle class. But socialism doesn’t work for free people. Someone who wants to make it work will have to lift the obstacle of freedom. Wanting Obama to fail in doing that is NOT wanting the country to fail, it’s wanting freedom to succeed.
After 9/11, when the flag was flying everywhere you looked, there were leftists who trembled. “Why can’t we have a flag with the whole world on it?” they asked. They would fly the UN flag instead. Eventually, someone created a flag with the globe on it, and that was popular in my hometown of San Francisco.
My life spans ten Presidential terms. When Johnson, Carter, and Clinton were President, I didn’t hear any conservatives say they were ashamed to be Americans or refuse to fly the American flag. But now that someone is President who wants to change the entire system so that the country is unrecognizable, liberals are stepping up to shout that they’re flying it now.
So tell me, Death — who loves the country more?

BTW – Keith Carradine stole that Oscar. The best song nominated that year was clearly Diana Ross’ “Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To).” I can’t imagine anyone listening to Ross’ song alongside Carradine’s country tune “I’m Easy” from Nashville and say in all honesty the latter is superior.
The only explanation in my mind is that voters punished the theme song from Mahogany because it was a ghastly motion picture. Think a more pretentious version of Mariah Carey’s Glitter.

I’ve seen similar uses of aesthetics before. This is sad attempt by people searching for meaning in places that will never fulfill their longings. Take note of all of the “religious” references, the appeals to emotion and nostalgia. I’m reminded of two things:
1. “Socialism is precisely the religion that must overwhelm Christianity. … In the new order, Socialism will triumph by first capturing the culture via infiltration of schools, universities, churches and the media by transforming the consciousness of society.” ~ Antonio Gramsci
2. This movie from 1934.
Send_Me on February 10, 2009 at 9:13 PM
It’s called “cultural terrorism”. Take a look at the Frankfurt School, Antonio Gramsci, György Lukács, Leon Trotsky… This was their project, their life’s work. Their goal was to create a “sensuality cult” and an “illiteracy cult”, which is to say, overtake the cinema and state-run education. They wished to defeat the West by infiltrating and transforming our culture. They are winning, and most don’t even know the war is taking place.

I think we should elect a new President from a different party every 4 years just so we can see the libtards go thru 4 year lovefests/hatefests with America.

You can use their website to send a message to your representatives. I noticed that when I clicked send, it opened a new gov browser and my message simply populated the comment data field and then you have to fill in your personal info so the system knows which representatives to send the message to….the pure mechanics of the system leads me to believe that these clowns get a copy of my email from the first data field I filled out, but not my personal info. If so, they will be reading my strong opposition to the stimulus bill….
too funny.
Someone else take a look at this and see if you come to the same conclusion. If so, it would be funny to both send our reresentatives our views on the stimulus bill and flood this website’s comments inbox with comments that they find disagreeable.

Cool, then you and your friends will be easy to spot. Better to be an open target and make it easier for me then! I wouldn’t clean my dog’s a** with that shirt.

Yeah, that’s the Democratic Party spirit! Waste nearly $300 bucks on t-shirts for people who might be better off with, say, food, or a job. There’s a spot in HHS for you.

Sighted last week: a car with both an Obama bumpersticker and one that read, “Proud member of the Religious Left!”
Of course. ‘Humble member of the Religious Left’ would make no sense.

Oddly, your words “after the revolution” gave me a feeling of hope. I like that. Our forefathers would have liked it too.

People scoffed when Ann Coulter wrote “Godless.” I suggest everyone read it now.

I suggest that everyone go find a copy of The Crisis and read it in its entirety. Change a few dates, change a few details and it sounds as though it was written last week.
I’d be willing to drive a spike into my head for every Obamabot at that rally in Florida who could correctly identify Thomas Paine.
These are the times that try men’s souls, indeed.

Agreed+1. I joined Glenn Beck’s group “We Surround Them.” I suggest everyone take the time to send their pic and join.

This can be the antithesis of that stupid born again American.
