Born Again Americans?

posted at 5:45 pm on February 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Apparently, some of our fellow Americans only acknowledge themselves as such when their candidates win election.  This collection of sunshine patriots have launched their website, proclaiming themselves “Born Again Americans,” led by television producer Norman Lear:

Born Again American is committed to the rebirth and re-expression of citizenship through informed and thoughtful activism. It is an initiative of Declare Yourself, a national non-partisan, non-profit (501(c)3) organization dedicated to increasing young voter participation and civic involvement. Declare Yourself’s on-line voter registration tool has been used by almost four million people since 2004. Declare Yourself grew out of the 2003’s Declaration of Independence Road Trip that toured an original 1776 copy of the Declaration to schools, town halls, and other locations all over the country.

Our founder, TV producer and philanthropist Norman Lear, was talking with Academy Award-winning songwriter Keith Carradine one night, and the Born Again American video was, well, born. It took the efforts of Director Mark Johnson of Playing for Change, Producer Brent Miller, and 16 performers and two choruses to bring Keith’s song to life in 14 iconic locations around the USA. The singers and musicians, non-professionals all, were chosen because they are living the lyrics in these troubled times, not just performing them.

I don’t need to sign the pledge on the website, because unlike all of these sudden Americans, I didn’t stop being American.  My passion for my country and my pride in it doesn’t start and stop depending on which party controls Congress and the White House.  Frankly, anyone who needs to experience a “rebirth” of their Americanism is someone on whom we can’t rely when things get tough, anyway — so who needs them?

Plus, there’s something creepily religious about the phrase “Born Again American” that appears to emphasize Barack Obama as their secular Messiah.  There’s nothing at all American about falling into cults of personality.  Maybe if they’d taken a little more pride in their American heritage, they’d already know that.

Fittingly, the acronym for this new organization is BAA — perfect for the sheeple that join it.

Update: Yes, it does sound depressingly familiar.

Professor Joseph Olson of Hemline University School of Law, St. Paul,
MN, points out some
interesting facts concerning the Presidential election:

a…Number of States won by: Democrats: 19 Republicans: 29
b…Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000 Republicans:
2,427,000
c…Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million
Republicans: 143 million
d…Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats:
13.2 Republicans: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: “In aggregate, the map of the territory Republican
won was mostly the l
and owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country. Democrat territory
mostly encompassed
those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off
various forms of
government welfare…”

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the
“complacency and apathy”
phase of Professor Tyler’s definition of democracy, with some forty
percent of the nation’s
population already having reached the “governmental dependency” phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal
invaders called illegals
and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five
years. If you are in
favor of this, then by all means, delete this message.

If you are not, then pass this along to help everyone realize just how
much is at stake, knowing
that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom.

After the revolution, one thing that is mandatory in the new constitution. We must have a clause that stipulates that only those who pay taxes will be allowed to vote. Anyone receiving any form of govt assistance will be automatically disqualified from voting, regardless of how much in taxes they pay.

They can take their “Born Again Americans” campaign and stick it where the sun doesn’t shine. I have never stopped being an American, and never will, despite their best efforts to turn America into a European disaster.

Why does the Hollywood elite feel it necessary to bother the rest of the country with their inane left wing BS? Just leave us alone.

something is deeply sick in apparently a large chunk of American Culture. the Opposite end of irrational BDS is Obama worship.

we were created to worship however, so that partially explains it.

Here is what Wikipedia says about Norman Lear:

“In addition to his success as a TV producer and businessman, Lear is an outspoken supporter of First Amendment and liberal causes. The only time that he didn’t support a Democrat was in 1980 when he voted for John Anderson because he considered the Carter administration to be ‘a disaster’. Taking a less active role in his TV productions in 1978, he soon turned his eyes to political activism, founding People for the American Way in 1981. People for the American Way ran a number of campaigns about religion in politics, and in 1987 helped lead the campaign to stop Robert Bork’s nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States.”

So . . . Born Again American, founded by Mr. Lear, is “non-partisan”? Yeah, right.

What do you know. It’s Norman Lear. I made a comment earlier regarding him possibly being President Hussein’s Obama’s writer. Yeah, these guys are born again alright. More like born again meatheads.

So the DJI tanks at 7,888 already on the day that porkulus passes the Senate. ABC is reporting that President Genius is chiding wall street on this reaction to the TARP II announcement. Got to admit, he sure has a lot of experience on the economy having worked at… Remind me what he’s done for a living so far other than working for ACORN?

No doubt we’ll be seeing a lot of the Whitehouse/Democrat Party propaganda being subed out to private groups or NGOs for the 1,440 days. It might readily work since the average American is well: average or below average.

AZCoyote on February 10, 2009 at 6:18 PM

At least we understand the latest development in socialist newspeak. First “progressive” meant “socialist,” then “hope and change” meant “socialism,” and now “American” apparently means “socialist,” too. Expect the fusilade of non-socialists being slurred as “un-American” to be unrelenting. Personally, I love (or loved) the constitutional republic of the United States. “Americans” can go diddle themselves.

Blacklake on February 10, 2009 at 6:19 PM

I hate these fair-weather Americans.

Iblis on February 10, 2009 at 6:19 PM

As I posted in a similar thread earlier:

Meh, “fair weather Americans” is all they are, which is not to be confused with true Americans that stand by their nation, stand by their principles, and stand by their morals regardless of who is president!

To hell with these “fair weather Americans” as THEY ARE NOT TRUE AMERICANS!

Liberty or Death on February 10, 2009 at 5:09 PM

And in response to a poster chastizing me for saying these dolts are not true Americans but are instead “Fair Weather Americans” I replied:

Well I do say they are less American than me and I have the right to say that and I say it not from a perspective of having some higher “moral authority” as you phrase it but I base my assertion on THE FACT these ingrates did nothing but cry, snivel, whine, wrongfully accuse, and bash our previous POTUS for 8 years (some very heinous accusations I might add, like MURDERER, etc.) instead of doing all these “great things” they are now willing to do only because they now have a president that is cool, that they like, and is ready to hand out lots of government goodies!

It was the above stated reasons alone (and not some “moral authority”) that I call them “fair weather Americans” and I will continue to refer to them as such no matter what you or others say. I’m not better than they are, but I am a much better American then they ever will be!

Also, could you imagine if the America people acted in the same selfish and childish way as these ingrates do when WWII broke out…seriously think about that for a moment…imagine the American people protesting after Pearl Harbor, protesting having to go to war, yelling “not in my name” or “no war for oil” or the president is worse than Tojo, the president is the world’s worst terrorist, etc, etc!

If that had happened we’d all be slaves to Nazism or Japan’s emperor, but thank God the greatest generation at the time were TRUE AMERICANS and not the pampered ingrates like these “fair weather American’s” are.

I stand by my statement, these dolts are nothing more than “FAIR WEATHER AMERICANS!”

Liberty or Death on February 10, 2009 at 5:39 PM

Anyone that wears this t-shirt should be roundly and constantly ridiculed for what they are, not being true Americans but for being “Fair Weather Americans!”

Key West Reader on February 10, 2009 at 6:53 PM

An odd observation–David Carradine says this about the song:

When Norman asked me to write “Born Again American” he did so with the suggestion that the song address several timely and timeless social and political issues. He was quite specific about reinforcing what our founders envisioned when they wrote our Constitution and Bill Of Rights; (ergo “my bible is The Bill Of Rights“). The secular ideals of Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine are what we need to remind ourselves of at this critical time in our Nation’s history.

But the lyrics as published on the site have this line:

I’m a Born Again American, conceived in Liberty / My Bible and the Bill of Rights, my creed’s equality

Did the line get changed to be less in-your-face secular?

I disagree that they believe in nothing at all. They believe in Obama, perhaps even more than in God because they can see and touch him.

Neither Moonies nor Scientologists effect my life unless I choose to let them into it. But now the POTUS is like a cult leader. That effects us all.

the reason I ask is because after he fails so miserably, it may get ugly. Were do these people turn next, after their savior is revealed to be a fake

This one’s easy to answer, because I know where they’ll turn next: to the next fad or trend or celebrity idol or new age politician or “alternative” band or latest pyramid scheme …

Whatever. The point is that these people are sheep, by definition. And I promise you, for most of them, Obama was not the first con they fell for … and he won’t be their last.

They’ll blissfully move on to the next scam, and they’ll be super duper full of hope and stuff for that one, too.

If its not politics, it’ll be something else that relies on the weakness of gullible people, something else that can give their lives meaning for a moment or two.

/Barack? Where’s my house payment?

This will devolve into class warfare. Just watch the video’s of the ‘town hall’ meetings.

Also, be advised that the great state of California has run out of money and can no longer pay welfare checks; no food stamps either. Individual counties have filed suit against the State.

Question: How long will it be before the entitlement force starts beating down the door of your private residence to get their entitlement? Time will tell.

These political born-again types reappear every few years like cicadas. They feed on each other’s vomit. The last hatch we had was during the reign of Bubba the Thong-snapper.

All a bunch of ciphers, in the crutch of the Übermenschcipher

p.s. best part – the world doesn’t “love” us any more than on Nov. 03, 2008. Hopenchange gone poof.

Sounds to me like an admission that their previous activism was not informed or thoughtful.

All these rats need is a red cravatte. I know the drill well, had to live it, for too long.

We’re on our way to nothing good, and they are oblivious to this day’s surfdom.

Naivete is indignant, but, heh, they are the erudite and enlightened ones. Clueless, really.

Gawd, I despise these people.
