Video: Mark Sanford on the new “savior-based economy”

Red meat for lunch. “Savior” isn’t a dig at Obama but a reference to rescuing poorly run institutions from the consequences of their decisions. Although as we inch closer to nationalization, the two amount to the same thing.

As for the stimulus, read Ross Douthat on the inanity of the centrist “compromise,” designed not to improve the bill but merely to make it more cosmetically appealing by trimming a bit of fat. Now it’s not big enough to make liberals happy and not small enough to make conservatives happy, which, says Douthat, “means that if the damn thing doesn’t work, we won’t even know whom to blame.” True, but won’t that be true no matter what? We’re still arguing over whether it was Bush’s tax cuts or his profligate spending that did more to get us where we are now. The Democrats’ congressional majority is too large to expect the bill to be downsized or given over to tax relief, but the pricetag on TARP II and future bailouts is too enormous to allow for a gargantuan stimulus now the way some lefties would like. A $2 trillion bill might sound good to Paul Krugman, filing his latest column from Fantasyland, but taxpayers’ appetite for spending isn’t inexhaustible — and neither is The One’s line of political credit. I think Beinart’s right: Who deserves the blame is a subsidiary question to who’ll actually get it if the stimulus fails. And that ain’t the GOP, centrists or otherwise.

This assumes anyone is left to assign blame.

I suggested 7 trillion back in October during the initial TARP. I’m glad the numbers are heading my way. :P

“…we won’t even know whom to blame.”

Obviously this person hasn’t been paying attention to the talking points. It’s all Bush’s fault.

Sanford for President

dc84123 on February 9, 2009 at 12:59 PM

Isn’t this taxation without representation for all of those children who can’t yet vote but are getting stuck with bills our generation’s presidents chose to spend without care?

I have a suggested name for the babies being born now: Generation Mugged. By Bush and Obama.

Boy, are they gonna have some anger issues… can’t wait for their eventual teenage rebellion. They might even party like it’s 1776.

…who, at this point, should probably be locked up in a rubber room, but is instead given editorial space to spread his illness.

He is great fiscally. A conservative that knows how to bring on the red meat.

jencab on February 9, 2009 at 1:04 PM

does Sanford have any known stances on Foreign Policy and Social issues? I know he’s known mostly for being a budget hawk…and any potential b.s. dirt the dems would sling? see Michael Steele

doesnt matter, unless the nation suddenly wants a boring sounding white guy after 4 yrs of Obama his only shot is as VP

They will go up in a Socialist America with 50% tax rates and government as the largest employer.
They’re teachers will repeatedly tell them that this is as good as America can be.

In other words, they will never know how good their lives could have been.

“Owners of capital will stimulate the working class to buy more and more expensive goods, houses and technology, pushing them to take more and more expensive credits, until their debt becomes unbearable. The unpaid debt will lead to bankruptcy of banks which will have to be nationalized, and the State will have to take the road which will eventually lead to communism”

I was watching the PBS series “The Commanding Heights” about free-market vs. government controlled economies. There were several failures of free markets, but they all seemed to have something in common: too much money chasing too little value, and nobody taking the risks seriously. The bailouts and stimulus packages would aggravate this by absolving risk-takers of the consequences of their poor decisions while simultaneously dumping more money where solid investments are becoming rare, thus forcing it to flow to risky investments — again!

The scary thing was that when many of these markets like Mexico or Singapore failed, the US was always called upon to step in and bail it out. What’s going to happen if our market fails? Nobody’s going to come bail us out, and the world-wide avalanche of failures could make the Great Depression look like a picnic by comparison.

The main message: do not repeat the actions of FDR, lest you destroy what is left of American liberty and prosperity.

Could not have said it better. There is going to be substantial work to be done in 2012 after four years of the current inept administration.

Cute…
I suppose it’s safe to say then: the Democrats (e.g. Marxists) have their image candidate and the Republicans (e.g. folks who claim to want a Republic but don’t know the difference between that and a Democracy) have theirs.
While Marxism is on the march, and winning (a more apt name for the “Cold War” would be “Cold Battle”), most don’t even realizing that we’re at war.
Though many think Obama is an idiot for not understanding the economic ramifications of this “stimulus” package, people need to start recognizing the sheer brilliance of the psychological campaign brought against the West by the Marxists since the 1930s. The economic portion of this bill is the least of our worries. Obama knows exactly what he is doing.

I have said for months… This guy Sanford is GREAT! A ticket of him with Palin is a HUGE win for Conservatives and America. Yes, I have always had him on top of Palin (ok guys, stop it) and the combo on the trail would be devestating to the far left.

Well said Mark.

That is the most depressing thing I’ve read in days. And that is really saying something. Thanks a lot.

We can not let that happen. How on earth do we fight this?

pannw on February 9, 2009 at 2:35 PM

Mark Sanford might be the only non-hacky/hypocritical conservative out there. I don’t actually agree with him, but he’s been really consistent and really comes up with great ways of talking about these issues that average folks can embrace. On the flipside, the state he governs has 20% unemployment. Gov. Sanford might want to work on that. Not sure why he, rather than “bling, bling” Steele (yes he actually said that today) isn’t RNC chairman.

“We’re still arguing over whether it was Bush’s tax cuts or his profligate spending that did more to get us where we are now”

Bullshit.

We where we are because the slobbering Barney Franks of the world forced banks to lend money to people who had no intent of paying it back.

notagool on February 9, 2009 at 3:32 PM

Ok , now he need to shorten his speech down and spice it up.

the_nile on February 9, 2009 at 3:39 PM

I like him. He communicates well and doesn’t pander. Anybody who can honestly sit there and deliver the message, “Yes, it’s going to be bad, but it’s going to be worse if we spend all this money,” is a hero in my book.

Is Douthat kidding with that post? It might be too big or it might be too small, so let’s blame it on the centrists?
