Well, governing’s been a bust thus far, and Obama likes getting out of the White House. Why not go back to what he does best — in fact, just about all he’s done in his political career?
On Monday, President Obama will travel to [Elkhart, Indiana] to highlight what’s at stake as his $800-billion-plus economic stimulus bill is debated in Congress.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says Obama wants to go where the nation’s economic problems are “acute” as part of his “his effort to convince Congress to move swiftly.” …
Monday’s visit will be Obama’s third trip to Elkhart — he stopped by twice during the presidential campaign — but his first trip outside Washington as president to meet face-to-face with average citizens.
Free tickets to the Concord High School town-hall-style meeting were handed out first-come-first-served starting at noon Saturday. People were lined up before 7 a.m. and the tickets were gone by early afternoon.
During the campaign, critics and opponents noted that the only real track record Obama had built in thirteen years of politics was campaigning for something else. Three weeks into his new administration, he’s found governing to be difficult, especially when trying to shove a partisan porkfest down the throats of an increasingly skeptical public. Time to go back to campaign mode! It apparently beats pulling the bill back for a chance to offer Republicans some input to get a bill that would generate easy support and passage.
Jazz Shaw can’t understand why Obama and the Democrats don’t see that:
If Obama allows this bill to slide through under the Democratic leadership’s knuckle, his vision of a post-partisan, new America working together for a bright future melts into just another four year cycle of political rhetoric which we’ve heard far too many times before. Today is the time to be in the trenches salvaging what will doubtless be one of the defining moments of Obama’s first (and if he’s lucky, not only) term. It’s not a moment to drop back into election mode and head off for a campaign rally.
In a way, Obama’s escaping rather than campaigning. The problem in this bill isn’t in Elkhart, and neither is the solution. Obama let his signature issue jump off the rails when he failed to control Nancy Pelosi and force her to get Republicans involved in writing the bill. That didn’t happen in Elkhart. He could solve that problem by summoning Pelosi and Harry Reid to the Oval Office and instructing them to go back to the drawing board, this time with Republican leadership, and get a bill that would gain massive support on both sides of the aisle.
After all, it’s not as if Republicans have shown an allergy to government spending over the last decade, and a targeted, efficient stimulus already has Republican support, as shown in the alternatives already offered by House and Senate GOP caucuses. If such a bill passed with wide margins, Obama could claim leadership and bipartisanship. Instead, he caved to Pelosi’s partisanship, and worse gave it cover by doing what Pelosi refused to do: meet with Republicans. The Left laughably claims this as bipartisanship, demanding that Republicans reciprocate by supporting a bill in which Democratic leadership refused to give them a voice.
Reversing that would take leadership by Obama, which has been completely absent in the first three weeks. Instead of leading, Obama’s bailing out of Washington and hiding out 1500 miles away. He wants to go back to what he does best, which is obviously not governing or leading.

All this from a guy who’s never been employed by a private employer for more than one year in his entire life. Except for his short-lived first job, his adult life has entailed nothing more than extorting money from other people or spending other people’s money or both.

How dare Republicans question the logic of growing government and raising taxes during a recession. Clearly expanding government and raising taxes will provide just what the private sector needs to “reevaluate” the situation ’cause we all know that contemplation, not private capital, is what is needed to grow our economy.

Does anyone still believe Barry will serve his four year term without resigning in disgrace or being impeached and replaced ? Could be health reasons or whatever but I really believe he will crack and resign. I guess I still believe God has a soft spot for the US. I think he is already more overwhelmed by the office then LBJ in 1968. Campaigning for this ridiculous bill shows him to be a weak empty suit. When it all unravels he will be chain smoking Kools and heading back to Chicago.
DeweyWins on February 9, 2009 at 12:53 PM
Much of this spending will go into just that…loosening up funds to get people to invest. With tax cuts, you throw all of it out to sea and hope some of it gets invested. With targeted spending you assure that certain sectors and certain state governments have funds available to either execute their current plans (which are in jeopardy) or begin new ones.
Now, I understand your sentiment, i really do, but this administration has made this targeted spending the central tactic in its response…you cant expect it to back down on that. You cant expect them to change their whole governing philosophy because you think yours is better. The philosophy of tax cuts and faith in the market has kicked sand in all our faces…they arent going to embrace it again. not yet anyway.

Tony Rezko or some other leg-breaker got Obama’s seller to knock the asking price from $1.65 million to $1.35 million in a sellers’ market. My guess is the seller found a horse’s head in bed the morning that he called Obama to tell him that a $300K reduction in the asking price was okay with him.
Where’s the media on that story? WTF? A nice house in a desirable location during a sellers’ market. I can hear the seller screaming from the blood on his sheets from here…”Ahhhhhhhhh, ahhhhhhhh!”

So then why are we getting $300 billion in tax cuts and $26 billion in spending this year?
Chuck Schick on February 9, 2009 at 12:58 PM
One way we may be able to threaten our legislators that has been overlooked. When you call your legislator ask them if they know how you can get your property taxes reassessed to reflect the down turn in the economy and falling property values. Now that won’t affect them on a national level, but if word gets out and trickles down to the state levels, it is going to increase the pucker factor on a lot of legislators.

Why should Obama be held solely responsible for not giving Bonior an anal probe before considering him for a cabinet appointment? This is the man the DNC presented to not just Obama, but to the whole country, as as their best and brightest. Shouldn’t THEY have checked him out at some point?
Moonbats have to personalize everything, and pick one person at a time to demonise. But that doesn’t mean we have to.

Spending doesn’t loosen up funds. Spending is spending.
Well … when the tax cuts are for investments, then you have it. But, of course, the idiot messiah already made it clear that he wouldn’t lower capital gains taxes (even if it helped the government) because it’s a question of “fairness” (i.e. revenge).
Er … when I say “loosen up funds” I’m not talking about loosening up state funds for them to go mess with the market. As to the sectors, fine. But what sectors and what is this money going to buy? Who decides what is most important to do? This is why central planning never works. Never, ever, ever.
Is the government going to just buy things in order to buy them, even though no one needs what it is buying? You might as well just give interest free loans, instead.
No. I think you have an odd idea of what this bill actually does.
Why not? He’s gone back on most of his “promises”, already. Why is this need for centralized planning so important?
Quite right.
BS. It was government meddling in the debt markets, forcing misvaluations of debt (and then having Fannie/Freddie scoop up the misvalued debt so that the lenders would create some more misvalued debt) that kicked sand in our faces. And they are embracing that again, in spades. No big surprise. BHO isn’t much of a thinker.

Ernesto:
You, like all liberals are an economic illiterate. Back in the early 1970s the Economist Robert Barro (now of Harvard) wrote an article on the government budget constraint. You see Government spending must equal the sum of taxes, borrowing and monetary creation. Ever dollar taxed or borrowed displaces a dollar of private spending. Government spending can only be a net gain to the economy if it is financed with printed money (leading to inflation) or with foreign borrowing (leading to a declining dollar, higher interest rates and potentially more inflation.) Both monetary creation and foreign borrowing lead to bigger problems in the future. Keynesian economics is bunk.
It’s funny that the administration and CNN hauled out Paul Krugman to push the stimulus bill. He did his work in international trade, which is what he got his Nobel for and not in macroeconomics. He is about ten years younger then me and studied economics at time when the Keynesian model was in disrepute. He probably never studied it in graduate school.

He may crack but he’s too arrogant to resign.
His father cracked when his promising career went south, and he became a shameless alcoholic, driving drunk even after a DUI resulted in double amputation of his legs. But even that didn’t stop him; he continued driving drunk until he killed himself.
I’m not implying Obama will become a self-destructive alcoholic. But I doubt he is capable of recognizing his own failure and doing anything as honorable as resigning.

I used to live in a town next to Elkhart (Granger) and it is a pretty small place – not the type of venue that I would have predicted O to visit to pitch this nonsense. The only justification I can think of is that IN has a pretty high unemployment rate. If that’s the case I’ll bet that he continues to pimp similar areas.
I still say that there is a chance that the moderate R’s pull out of this thing and vote no. If support were so strong for this, O wouldn’t be in Elkhart pitching it – IOW’s he’s dealing from position of weakness, not strength. He’s figured out that, even though the bill is crap and most likely won’t work, he’ll look worse if it fails to pass. Either way, he loses, either in the ST (doesn’t pass) or in the LT (passes and doesn’t work). He’s betting that he can better weather the LT storm as opposed to scrapping the thing and starting from scratch.

We are in this situation because government encouraged lenders to make loans to people who could not afford them. Instead of owning up to that reality, we’re getting offered a pork-laden bill heavy on public works projects conducted by union workers using materials obtained through protectionist trade policies. That should work great. I’m sure all those laid off financial services workers will build excellent bridges.
So the Big 3 are in trouble because union wages were not high enough? I really don’t understand what you’re talking about here. Are you saying banks weren’t paying their clerks enough? Are you saying government employees are more productive than private sector employees? I have never met anyone who thought the government sector was the best place to develop work-place efficiencies. You can’t quarantine mispriced debt. Arbitrage takes it through the entire debt market, so everything gets infected.
The government forced the mispriced debt on companies (by threat of lawsuit, calls of “racism”, loss of government contracts, ….) and then those companies finally jumped in with two feet to what they were forced to do. It’s not too difficult to understand this.

Seems ironic that Obama would go to the center of RV manufacturing in America, Elkhart, Indiana. Ironic in that this administration represents the greatest threat to recreational vehicle manufacturing in the form of: a) supporting California emissions standards; b) opposition to domestic oil production and refining plants; c) their support of carbon taxes; d) unionization of American industry – card check, et al; and e) the upcoming imposition of a 1 dollar gasoline tax.
All of this will work against the RV industry in its current form. The California emissions standards are bad enough in itself. Any manufacturer that considers opening up shop in California would have to be out of his mind. This boondoggle “stimulus” package may provide some temporary relief for the unemployed in Elkhart however in the long run his policies and those of his administration will prove harmful to the RV industry in the long run.
Freeing the credit market will mean nothing when and if gasoline is once again over 4 dollars a gallon.

No, actually, immediately after undergrad at Columbia (say, early summer 1983) and for about 12 to 18 months he was employed in NYC. He didn’t get recruited to community organizing until sometime in 1984 or 1985. Admittedly, that period is a little murky, but my impression is that it’s the time during which he grew to loathe free enterprise, except to the extent it underwrote his existence or helped to promote his useless books.
I’ve read this elsewhere, but from a fairly reliable factcheck.org entry:

Google Maps says it’s 597 miles from DC to Elkhart, IN. FWIW

We can throw her worthless, corrupt and incompetent ass out in two years, whereas his ass is pretty much there for four.
And once you cut off the foreleg of the donkey . . .

Obama doesn’t actually govern, he playacts like a child in a game of make believe. I guess that makes him our first black President and our first evah Pretendisent

I saw him on TV and did wonder why he was back campaigning.

Hillary.
Obama is wedded to his domestic/economic policies because his “economic” policies are tied to how he plans to hold on to and expand his power base, but has little invested in his foreign policies.
Something major will happen and Hillary will either be thrown under the bus or possibly resign. Hillary has other things she can do that will keep her in the public eye, even if it’s just working on Bill’s foundation. It doesn’t help her to go down with this ship.
And, I like to think that she has a small sliver of a conscience. If a major terrorist event occurs or if Israel is attacked I think she’ll leave the administration rather than be a party to that sort of thing.

Dear Ed, the perfection of your opening sentences brings a tear to my eye. Bless you. Someone gets it.
As for the campaign trip to Elkhart, dear commenters – if you have never been to Elkhart, Indiana, you cannot possibly imagine how ridiculous it is that our new Emperor – HRH The One – is going there for the third time in a year.
I’m not certain that a President has ever been there before. It is a dump, where the great claim to fame is the construction of mobile homes and RVs. All I can say is “WTF?”

Well said, Ed, but I don’t agree that Barry campaigns well in town meetings. In that respect I think it merely shows what a joke he is. But, if I was there in Indianna, I wouldn’t be laughing. I will await the coverage…maybe they will insert canned laughter, at the Repubs expense.
Maybe hitting his head on the door frame of Air Force One will bring the hope for change we can believe in. NOT.
I just heard the first giddy clip of his speech in Elksnout, BUCKET!!!

What about his new propaganda website, recovery.gov? Heard this on the radio and just had to laugh.

And alot of bank bailout money went to buying banks in China.
Thanks for posting that quote about China divesting from US bonds on net over the weekend. It will be interesting to see from where the Democrats are going to get $2 trillion (and counting) to pay for 2009.

Actually, just as George Bailey explained to the terrified depositors on his wedding day at the Bailey Building & Loan in It’s a Wonderful Life: (to paraphrase) “Potter is isn’t selling. He’s buying. Why? Because you’re scared, and he’s not,” I’d argue that Obama isn’t selling, he’s buying and he’s causing us to grovel to him.
Obama is feeding Americans a line that we should throw back in his face. Where the f*ck is our backbone to fight through this mess? We should turn our attention to persecuting those in Congress and in business who led us here and getting back on track with real leaders–not cotton candy vendors. We should not allow our fears to enable Rahm Emmanuel and Obama and the rest to take advantage of a good crisis. They’re all POS.

I said: “…maybe they will insert canned laughter, at the Repubs expense.” Not that most of them don’t deserve it.
This reminds me of Barry’s stand-up comic line: ‘They say that it’s not a stimulus bill, it’s a spending bill…Well, that’s the point!’
Econ 101: No one can spend their way out of debt.
I wonder, if the Hoosiers get to ask The One questions, will they be selected?…Well, DUH!
Christine on February 9, 2009 at 1:39 PM
Wasn’t that the charge against Pres. Bush? That he preyed on our fears to convince us to invade Iraq? Well, I guess Pres. Obama has no problem preying on fear to invade the US with socialism. Destruction from within not without.

Sean commented on the beer remark on the “campaign trail” today. Looks like Sean will rip him one along with a Heineken!
OTOH, confirmed that he wants nothing to happen and let chips fall where they may (in my own words). Reminded TV anchor that he opposed Bush’s plan as well.

Excellent series, I watched the whole thing over the weekend. (DVR is a wonderful technology). Yes, even I caught the subtle similarities between BHO and der fuhrer. If you get a chance, look for “Weaponology-”Waffen SS”, and the MG-42. I want one!

If Obama was at all confident that the stimulus will work, he would not need or want political cover from Republicans.
This stimulus is payback for liberal special interests. To this end, it does work for the pimps of the public sector.

Can’t you all see how good he looks? Why should he have to actually do something?
He gets his way by just standing there, by simply being.
