Reverting to form

posted at 12:15 pm on February 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Well, governing’s been a bust thus far, and Obama likes getting out of the White House.  Why not go back to what he does best — in fact, just about all he’s done in his political career?

On Monday, President Obama will travel to [Elkhart, Indiana] to highlight what’s at stake as his $800-billion-plus economic stimulus bill is debated in Congress.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says Obama wants to go where the nation’s economic problems are “acute” as part of his “his effort to convince Congress to move swiftly.” …

Monday’s visit will be Obama’s third trip to Elkhart — he stopped by twice during the presidential campaign — but his first trip outside Washington as president to meet face-to-face with average citizens.

Free tickets to the Concord High School town-hall-style meeting were handed out first-come-first-served starting at noon Saturday. People were lined up before 7 a.m. and the tickets were gone by early afternoon.

During the campaign, critics and opponents noted that the only real track record Obama had built in thirteen years of politics was campaigning for something else.  Three weeks into his new administration, he’s found governing to be difficult, especially when trying to shove a partisan porkfest down the throats of an increasingly skeptical public.  Time to go back to campaign mode!  It apparently beats pulling the bill back for a chance to offer Republicans some input to get a bill that would generate easy support and passage.

Jazz Shaw can’t understand why Obama and the Democrats don’t see that:

If Obama allows this bill to slide through under the Democratic leadership’s knuckle, his vision of a post-partisan, new America working together for a bright future melts into just another four year cycle of political rhetoric which we’ve heard far too many times before. Today is the time to be in the trenches salvaging what will doubtless be one of the defining moments of Obama’s first (and if he’s lucky, not only) term. It’s not a moment to drop back into election mode and head off for a campaign rally.

In a way, Obama’s escaping rather than campaigning.  The problem in this bill isn’t in Elkhart, and neither is the solution.  Obama let his signature issue jump off the rails when he failed to control Nancy Pelosi and force her to get Republicans involved in writing the bill.  That didn’t happen in Elkhart.  He could solve that problem by summoning Pelosi and Harry Reid to the Oval Office and instructing them to go back to the drawing board, this time with Republican leadership, and get a bill that would gain massive support on both sides of the aisle.

After all, it’s not as if Republicans have shown an allergy to government spending over the last decade, and a targeted, efficient stimulus already has Republican support, as shown in the alternatives already offered by House and Senate GOP caucuses.  If such a bill passed with wide margins, Obama could claim leadership and bipartisanship.  Instead, he caved to Pelosi’s partisanship, and worse gave it cover by doing what Pelosi refused to do: meet with Republicans.  The Left laughably claims this as bipartisanship, demanding that Republicans reciprocate by supporting a bill in which Democratic leadership refused to give them a voice.

Reversing that would take leadership by Obama, which has been completely absent in the first three weeks.  Instead of leading, Obama’s bailing out of Washington and hiding out 1500 miles away.  He wants to go back to what he does best, which is obviously not governing or leading.

I’m honored to be here today, and as a show of my concern for the state of businesses here in the 57th state of Indiana, I’d like to purchase one of the Bontrager RVs, which I’m sure comes outfitted with an arugula crisper!

MadisonConservative on February 9, 2009 at 12:24 PM

BTW, the idiot messiah said “The United States of an America” when he started his speech (check the video). It is weird … except for the fact that the guy spent his formative years in Indonesia, in which case it makes perfect sense.

forest on February 9, 2009 at 12:24 PM

Here’s a question that probably wont be asked in Elkhart.

What is one of the industries laying off people in Elkhart?

RV manufacturing.

What exactly is in the stimulus bill that’s going to get people to buy more RV’s?

Currently, nothing, not that they didn’t try getting something specific to RV’s into the bill.

U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-Granger, was successful in getting language pertaining to RVs added to House version of the Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility. The provision would have provided government backing to RV wholesale and retail loans. Although the entire measure subsequently died in the Senate, Donnelly is hopeful the Federal Reserve will include the reference to RVs in the second $350 billion economy recovery plan that should be released this week.

Wandering away from the office…I don’t think anyone realizes how much paperwork, and detail needs to be done everyday from the oval office.
He is not running the country, when he is running a campaign. This isn’t the Senate, where his vote doesn’t count.
This is a man who accomplished two things while in the senaate…he sponsored and got passed one bill, in 2006 (the Congo bill or something like that, not even a domestic bill), and he named a post office after himself.

How many votes do the people of Elkhart have in the U.S. Senate? Two, the same number as anywhere else in the United States, except Minnesota, for now.

This brings back memories of early 2005, when then-President Bush traveled the country trying to rally support for allowing payroll taxes to be used for private savings accountss, while Democrats got on TV and promised to “save” Social Security by doing nothing.

While the Big O plays the crowds in Elkhart, it’s time for McConnell & Co. to do some serious arm-twisting in the Senate, where the REAL action is! Only 37% support in Rasmussen–it’s time for the GOP to vote with the voters and FILIBUSTER!!!

Ed, stop alluding to a bill that would have a large measure of support from both sides of the aisle. No amount of wrangling with Pelosi is going to produce a bill with enough spending to please most dems AND enough tax cuts to please most republicans…such a position simply does not exist. hardline conservatives are marching to the drum of NO SPENDING! JUST TAX CUTS! that will never, ever, ever, ever gain the support of a majority of both repubs and dems. It makes no sense to insist on that.

As it stands, neither side is interested in a compromise. Republicans insist on calling this entire bill a sham by questioning its premise, mainly that government spending can stimulate growth. Now, given that starting point, how is a spending bill EVER going to please conservatives??? Its not.

So stop saying this:

It apparently beats pulling the bill back for a chance to offer Republicans some input to get a bill that would generate easy support and passage.

He could solve that problem by summoning Pelosi and Harry Reid to the Oval Office and instructing them to go back to the drawing board, this time with Republican leadership, and get a bill that would gain massive support on both sides of the aisle.

And i didnt call it that. I called it what it is, a spending bill.

Also, when a state government is drawing up its budget figures…it makes projections. When large business draw up balance sheets, they make projections. Being able to project added revenue in 2010 can and does have an impact on immediate spending/growth both at the government level and in the private sector.

Again, not justifying it all, because there is surely nonsense in there…but harping on the dating ignores the aforementioned facts about projections.

So when he tells us to tighten our belts in this near catastrophic economy, should we listen or tell him to stick it?

Chickenlittle-in-Chief is more like it! We have nothing to fear except Obama’s need to be a drama-queen!

Wrong, there were many Republican proposals offered. You’re misinformed or playing rank propagandist.

hawkdriver on February 9, 2009 at 12:42 PM

wow… does this guy no know that you cannot BORROW your way OUT OF DEBT?

He will soon found out that you cannot. My wife has tried that. Now she is looking for a job to pay for her “stimulus”.

Obama let his signature issue jump off the rails when he failed to control Nancy Pelosi and force her to get Republicans involved in writing the bill.

I continued to be amazed by how many people automatically assume Nancy and Obama are on mutually exclusive paths.

Since when is Obama not a Far Leftist/Marxist? Since when Pelosi not a Far Leftist/Marxist?

Why do Republicans keep giving the benefit of the doubt to the destroyers of this country? Haven’t you been embarrassed enough by your past naiveté?

lined up before 7 a.m. and the tickets were gone by early afternoon.

So actually, they had a hard time giving away free tickets.

Wow, he’s turning out to be an even bigger disaster than I expected, and that’s saying a lot. He doesn’t have a clue how to lead. Putin, Kim Jong Il and Ahmadinejad will eat him for breakfast.

ProfessorMiao on February 9, 2009 at 12:42 PM

Give the guy a break. Obama is just trying to relive his glory days.

Obama has earned a respite. But it’d better be a brief one. He can only waste time reminiscing about his lifetime filled with accomplishments for so long; then he’s got to get right back to work.

The One has no predecessors or peers against which to judge his performance in office. He has to meet the toughest standard of all: Living up to his own reputation.

…And Obama is way overdue to start writing his first set of memoirs.

Even my 12 year old just came to me and asked why Obama is having another town meeting.

I’m 1500 miles away and I’m not a doctor, but still I can accurately diagnose that our President needs to double-up on his Ritalin prescription.

Yea, the republican proposals questioned the premise. They offered tax cuts, not spending. The premise of this bill is to get the government spending money on projects that can keep some economic engines humming while the private sector reevaluates the situation it finds itself in.

Proposing to scrap the essential piece of the plan is not a proposal at all. A posture maybe.

Washington D.C.’s police chief Charles H. Ramsey recently revealed that the nation’s capital, perhaps the highest on the list of targets for terrorists, has a sanctuary policy in place. In August 2006 Judicial Watch filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requesting documents pertaining to the department’s illegal immigration policies.

The department did not respond. Judicial Watch then filed a lawsuit on March 8, 2007, which prompted Ramsey to write a public memo which said:

“MPD [Metropolitan Police Department] officers are strictly prohibited from making inquiries into citizenship or residency status for the purpose of determining whether an individual has violated the civil immigration laws or for the purpose of enforcing those laws…the MPD is no in the business of inquiring about the residency status of the people we serve and it not in the business of enforcing civil immigration laws.”

Maybe illegal immigrant Aunt Zaytungo is helping out.

Think of all the jobs created when the build a new Barackopolis in every city he visits. Soon he will announce a 90 day celebration of his ascension to power by having exhibitions of feeding Republicans to the lions.

But for now he will just announce his $1 Billion plan for stimulating the manufacturing of tofu and arigula powered RV’s.

Gee who saw this trainwreck coming and sounded the alarms that The One had NO executive/governing experience at all?

Who said Obama had been constantly campaigning for the next office from day one?

Certainly not the MSM.

Neo on February 9, 2009 at 12:48 PM

I can’t imagine that Obama actually wants a bill to pass that has things like a Chula Vista dog park in it — dozens, if not hundreds, of them — and little if any foreclosure assistance (though there was $4.2 billion in neighborhood stabilization funding through CDBG in the House version).

Let’s say something like the House version gets out of conference and passes on a party-line vote. Will President Obama really be satisfied when in 2 years no credible economist is able to link the stimulus to changes in macroeconomic conditions but everyone in America can name 20 boondoggles they’ve seen written about in their local paper or talked about on TV by the local investigative reporter? For every dollar spent on something questionable, for people to do the math in their heads how many additional weeks of unemployment insurance that would have covered? How many house payments or new employees’ payroll taxes that could have covered?

He’s setting himself up to lose control of this narrative over the long run, just like Bush did in Iraq, and it’s completely unnecessary.

Huh? Reevaluates? Oh, so we’re paying for them to spend time reevaluating rather than loosen up money to get them to actually invest? Okay.

Proposing to scrap the essential piece of the plan is not a proposal at all. A posture maybe.

ernesto on February 9, 2009 at 12:44 PM

It is a proposal and a good one. Of course, if someone is an idiot like the Precedent and thinks that STIMULUS = SPENDING then I can see where the problems come in.

progressoverpeace on February 9, 2009 at 12:48 PM

One problem with the stimulus bill. It will not work.

I like Gov. Sanford’s view that our economy is no longer market driven, but savior driven. : ))

http://michellemalkin.com/2009/02/09/from-market-based-to-savior-based/

Republicans ask President Obama ONE question before voting for the stimulus bill.

President Obama, when and where has government spending pulled a country out of a recession?

If printing money WAS stimulus, Bolivia would be the center of the financial world.

This stimulus package is almost comical in its illogic.
