Open thread: The “If we don’t spend a trillion dollars then the terrorists have already won” presser
posted at 7:40 pm on February 9, 2009 by Allahpundit
8 p.m. ET around the dial. Skip the first 10 minutes if you have to; the fun won’t start until the Q&A. Watch for (a) whether The One has the stones to claim the Senate bill was bipartisan, (b) how soon and hard he’s pressed about the fact that TARP II is likely to be “far bigger” than the stimulus, and (c) whether the health-care provisions being buzzed about at the boss’s blog have trickled up onto the media’s radar yet. With Netanyahu and Likud on the verge of returning to power in Israel, we’re bound to see a question about Israeli hawkishness affecting negotiations with Iran, too. I wonder if he’ll offer even a pro forma statement about Iranian nukes being “unacceptable.”
A lot of minds are going to change tonight. I can feel it.

I’m not sure I’d agree that intimidated is the right word. More like they didn’t want to be the one to ask the “Joe the Plumber” question that results in four years of not once getting a question answered. I think it is a moot point. This trainwreck could well be the last time the filthy liar actually uses this format.
highhopes on February 9, 2009 at 9:20 PM
It is your right, and considering what’s very possibly coming down the pike in this country (deepening recession, centralized government), I’d recommend purchasing sooner rather than later.

Don’t know where you studied economics, maybe the same place as Obama. Taking money from one hand and putting it in the other is not “stimulus”. The economy is “stimulated” by wealth creation not wealth redistribution (government spending). By definition, the government must allocate resources less efficiently than the private sector, unless you believe that “public goods”, the value of which can never be quantified, actually create wealth.
If government spending were efficient, why would not the private sector undertake the same spending? So to take money from an efficient creator of wealth (the private sector) and mis-allocate it through government will destroy wealth, and jobs with it.

Obama encourages peope to spend in the current circumstances, and it’s reported as sheer brilliance.

You mean stuff like, “Come on, uh, of course there’s a lot of spending in a stimulus package. That’s what a stimulus is. It’s spending.”
Yeah, regular Einstein this guy is.
He isn’t any smarter than Bush. Bush got into HBS, which is just as difficult to get into as HLS.
What has Obama ever said that wasn’t leftist boilerplate? Even his whole riff on the Constitution in the radio interview he gave, which was arguably the most “philosophical” interview with him, was standard 60′s leftist “positive rights” stuff.

Can one person (just one) please make the connection for me between the tax cuts and the current financial crisis. What did the tax cuts have to do with the mortgage meltdown and Wall Street financial firms over-leveraging to get a piece of the real-estate action.
Seriously, when Obama claims that tax cuts have been tried and failed and contributed to the current crisis it seems that he doesn’t have any grasp of what caused this crisis.
And, as far as failed policies of the past: somebody please name one time in history (just one) where Keynesian economics has worked. And don’t say the New Deal.
As for supply-side tax cuts, they have worked over and over again. Harding-Coolidge, JFK, Reagan, Bush, even Clinton cut capital gains. All led to economic expansion.

So is Barry. Here’s an assignment for you:
” Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) — The euro fell, halting a three-day gain against the yen, after the Nikkei newspaper reported that Russian banks and businesses may ask foreign lenders to reschedule loans worth $400 billion.
The yen gained for a second day versus the dollar on speculation the financial turmoil in Europe is worsening, prompting investors to sell higher-yielding assets. The 16-nation euro also dropped against the dollar after European finance ministers signaled increasing concern that some governments are finding it harder to borrow in financial markets.” http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a6t8Ejju39uo&refer=home
Tell us how Barry is going to explain what this means for the US, EU, UK and Asian economies. What impact will this have on oil prices? What impact will this have in terms of foreign policy?
I have a few more questions for you, but that’s a good start.
Be succinct. No stammering and no fillers.

Watching the video file now; Exactly how long will the President keep saying “I inherited this deficit and economic crisis”?
The truth about the cause of the economic crisis has not been emphasized by the conservatives.
I will agree with him regarding the deficit. But let’s be honest. How can he complain about the deficit on one hand, while planning to increase the deficit quicker and to levels never before seen in history?
cryptojunkie on February 9, 2009 at 9:51 PM
Much of the media are basically ignorant of economic and foreign affairs matters. When that is combined with blind adoration of someone like BO, it’s a disaster. No one is asking questions above the level of a Britany Spears interview.

Many years ago, early in the history of the internet, I spent all my time in the News Groups. Those frequented by flamers and trolls and hardcore newsies like the Nose.
Benny fits a profile from there. Sixteen to eighteen years old, slow growth in maturity, and firm in his belief that he is getting the better of the grownups. But he also could be 35 years old with the mind of a 16 year old.

A point of clarification;
It is not being emphasized by the conservatives and they are allowing the blame to be placed on President Bush unfairly.
The housing bubble, the MBS credit debacle and the crash all can be laid at the feet of federal government meddling in the mortgage business courtesy of liberal policies.

But, did hear on Greta that he told several million people that there were “no earmarks or PET PROJECTS” in this bill. I hope I got that right as it was admittedly second hand. Hannity called that a flat out lie and he’s right. Is it because Obama hasn’t read the Bill or is he nervy enough to bald faced lie to millions of Amercian people to get what he wants? Now, maybe the libs on here tonight(and Obama) don’t see anything wrong with unvarnished lying–but I do. In fact, I see it as indefensible and what’s the matter with a press who doesn’t pounce on this.
