Steele: The Democrats’ power has gone to their heads

posted at 3:15 pm on February 7, 2009 by Allahpundit

Fine on substance but a bit more stilted in delivery than I expected from a guy so media savvy, especially given the base’s passion on this subject. Steele’s used to going off the cuff in his role as telepundit; see, e.g., his RNC acceptance speech for how comfortable he is speaking extemporaneously. Maybe he should prep for these things that way — start with an outline of points and then do it impromptu in a few takes, stitching together the best parts of each. He needs to be on his game, as the media will be itching to compare him unfavorably to The One and these weekend message duels give them a perfect excuse.

Also, can we give the man a set worthy of his station? Obama’s been using warm lighting and handsome wood-paneled offices as backdrops for his video communiques since the primaries. This looks like it was shot during a commercial break on “Hannity.”

heh…My thoughts too as I watched that earlier…I like the little “turn to the other camera” for dramatic effect to. So with two cams, they’re at least ahead of CSPAN in technology.

This looks like it was shot during a commercial break on “Hannity.”

Ha Ha. It reminds me of those cheesy commercials that look like they were filmed by someone half way through art school.

“Hi I’m Michael Steele and I WANT YOUR GOLD! JEWELS, RINGS, NECKLACES, YOUR DEAD GANGSTA SON’S TEETH, I WANT IT ALL!”

Maybe he should prep for these things that way — start with an outline of points and then do it impromptu in a few takes, stitching together the best parts of each.

Good suggestion. I’ve done speaking both ways. When you know, understand and feel passionately about the topic, remember the main points to hit and then go with the impromptu and let the passion flow from your mind and heart.

That’s also a good suggestion about the set.

INC on February 7, 2009 at 3:23 PM

Considering he just canned all the staff, I’m willing to give a pass on this one and just be happy they got it out there.

HOWEVER, this is our opportunity to build a party organization that will be able to reclaim seats lost and go after new ones. I expect to see DRAMATIC technical improvement in the coming weeks, in video messages and party communication structure in general.

Let’s roll!

Good points, Allah. However, I do give Steele credit for at least doing this. It’s good to use the internet like this, although it wouldn’t hurt to keep in mind the aesthetics of media productions also.

I think delivery makes a huge difference, and with Obama’s boring monotone stuff, we need something better. He should read this thing a dozen times until he’s got it down, and can say it without a teleprompter. If it takes a few takes, so what. Politics a media game, and we’ve been losing for too long.

jimmy the notable on February 7, 2009 at 3:32 PM

I don’t see anything wrong with this. His goal is to make himself the new face of the party, and stop all this Rush nonsense the liberals have been pushing for 2 wks now.

Anyway he can make that happen is good for me. This will obviously get better as time goes on, but this is a good first step. He also will get better as time goes on. This is why I thought we needed a compelling national figure as chairman.

Chudi on February 7, 2009 at 3:34 PM

I liked the message…I get the sense he is just warming up…

Rockygold on February 7, 2009 at 3:36 PM

Pretty good by Steele, as far as it goes — but I’m still waiting for a major fiscal conservative leader to give the firm and unequivocal message that the real way for government to “do something” about a dismal economy is for federal bureaucracies to be forced to shrink dramatically rather than induced to balloon sickeningly.

Government is already bloated beyond reason and tragically, the Democrats are on the brink of bloating it even more and metastasizing America’s economic misery.

Edouard on February 7, 2009 at 3:37 PM

Apparently because I have too much time on my hands I just email Judd Gregg’s office to let him know that I think his nomination is an insult. I know that they don’t care but I have written all but Sen. Snowe.

I totally agree. the next thing you know, it will be pooh-poohed by the media, and they will couch it as ‘conservatives are saying’. This is a very good first step, and will improve as time goes on.

Chudi on February 7, 2009 at 3:45 PM

Its not unfair to critique Mr Steele. He is the one who has to prove he is up to the job.

This was too softball for my tastes. Obama is shoving a trillion dollar boondoggle down our throats and this is how we counter that ?

William Amos on February 7, 2009 at 3:46 PM

Also, can we give the man a set worthy of his station? Obama’s been using warm lighting and handsome wood-paneled offices as backdrops for his video communiques since the primaries. This looks like it was shot during a commercial break on “Hannity.”

LOL. It does look a little “local access.”

And you are right, prepared statements are awful for people who realy believe in what they are saying. If Michale Steele has a few bullet points on a note card he can speak very well he believes what he is saying. Obama on the other hand ends up revealing what he really thinks without a teleprompter i.e. “spread the wealth around.”

Theworldisnotenough on February 7, 2009 at 3:48 PM

It is unfair to critique him this early in the game. And…he will grow into the job more readily if he knows that we are behind him and support his success. Let’s NOT be our own worst enemies as we often were during the recent campaign.

amerpundit on February 7, 2009 at 3:53 PM

There has already been bipartisanship between Democrats and Republicans in the House — just look at the party affiliations of those who voted against the stimulus bill. Hopefully, that identical spirit of bipartisanship will fill the Senate in a couple of days.

As for Steele, he did well here. But I’m definitely against fish passage barriers — I believe in piscatorial social promotion.

He couldn’t possibly be as “smart” or “eloquent” as the One, not even for a black man, which are code words for the media on Messiah’s oratory “genius”.

Were they not so blinded by their current Obama-crotch position, they’d realize that he’s not at all a good speaker. The key is for them to wake up before it is too late for our country. The Chinese are dilligently watching.

What clearer proof of unserious intent need there be than their transferring supervision of the Census out from under him to the White House. IMO, his response to that show of no-confidence should be to remove his name from consideration and return to the Senate.

petefrt on February 7, 2009 at 4:07 PM

Chairman Steele;

Please accept my congratulations on your selection as chairman of the RNC. I’m very pleased and look forward to many successes for the party during your term.

I’m also writing to request that you and the RNC publicly take a position strongly opposing the defection of senators Snowe, Collins, and Specter in joining with the majority to invoke cloture in order to pass the stimulus package. I believe passage of this bill will be to the long term detriment of the country and should be vigorously opposed by everyone, particularly anyone who represents themselves to be Republican. Any future financial support of the RNC by me will be predicated on the basis that not one cent of RNC funding will be expended for the reelection of any member of the house or senate who votes for this travesty. I believe that all three senators should be advised that the RNC will endorse and vigorously support primary challengers in each of their next reelection races.

Sent to chairman@gop.com

Hopefully Mr. Steele will be getting overwhelming feedback along similar lines over the next 36 hours or so and will let the three turncoats know that they will have “crossed the Rubicon” if they actually vote for cloture or the bill.

Poor Jud Gregg is dead

He’s all laid out to rest
With his hands acrost his chest
His fingernails have never been so clean

And nobody ever knowed it

Poor Jud is dead

Yes! Weep and wail and gnash teeth over Judd Gregg. I am certainly doing it. And, now I hear that Paul Hodes, our Dem Congressman, plans to run for the Senate in 2010. And, guess what, he’ll make it. Through all this, Gregg sits smugly in his new office directing who knows who to do who knows what. I can never forgive him. Even though I had heard a rumor that he was not going to run again.

jeanie on February 7, 2009 at 4:41 PM

Is The One planning to do another stimulus?

You know, one that attacks unemployment before the recession is likely to end anyway.

Anyone watch Hawaii 50? With the wave?

The huge money supply might hit The One like that. Too bad we will be around, too.

IlikedAUH2O on February 7, 2009 at 4:45 PM

Just HOW is Steele going to hold RINOs accountable when he IS a RINO? His first job would be to put a boot in the asses of Snowe, Collins and Spector, followed by a boot in the asses of ANYONE who voted for Geitner and Holder and I’m afraid that includes Sessions and Chamblis. It’s pretty hard to hold anyone else accountable for straying from the party platform when you barely support half of the party platform yourself.

“Individual empowerment — that’s how you stimulate the economy.”

So give the Left the Stimulus they want:

$1Million to 400 Million Americans tax free for 2009.

Hey, at this point debt is debt. Think you’d see some spending then?

Then in 2010, drop tax rates. Drop Corporate tax rates. Drop Capital Gains rates. Since everyone’s a millionaire, no need for welfare. Minimal need for Medicare. No need for student loans.

Sure it’s wealth re-distribution. It’s what the left wants. Give it to them in this framework, and amend the constitution that this cannot happen again for 100 years, and that there are no increases in Welfare or Medicare for the next 25 years.

Give the Left what they want ONCE, and then see if folks are so inclined to Federal theft and pork when they come after their million bucks.

Good job Mike Steele. I like the fact that Mike has a command of the English language. The man can put thoughts together and express them in complete sentences. I could not bear another day of listening to Bush,or McCain and Palin for that matter. Sarah needs realize that we as a country have many dialects of speech. The Alaskan version of English she uses seems far removed from the version I use to communicate in my business and professional transactions nationwide. Talk about dumbing down!

I hope Mike adopts a policy to address the smear tactics being used to decimate viable Republican candidates. We need a system in place that keeps the party unified behind our candidates no matter what the smear machine churns out or the differences in our own opinions. We have the Constitution as a point of reference that we should ALL be using as THE unifying agent!

I prefer not to start quoting Palin to prove my point. But quite a few of her sentences are simply convoluted.

I can understand what she’s trying to say, but I really wish she would just SAY it.

Phoenician on February 7, 2009 at 7:41 PM

We ought to have a thread on this news.

I was hoping some influential blogger would advance the idea and suggest that Gregg remove his name from consideration and return to the Senate. I’m no martyr, but if I got this kind of treatment prior to confirmation, that surely is what I’d do, if only to be able to face myself in the mirror tomorrow when shaving.

What clearer proof of unserious intent need there be than their transferring supervision of the Census out from under him to the White House. IMO, his response to that show of no-confidence should be to remove his name from consideration and return to the Senate.

From what I understand, Gregg was so tired of the Senate, and so desperate to find an exit strategy, that this was an offer he couldn’t refuse. Too bad for the rest of us, huh.

petefrt on February 7, 2009 at 7:42 PM

I thought the speech was fine.
Not only does the head of the RNC not have access to the production facilities afforded to the POTUS, but as a “dues paying” member of the RNC, I’m not sure that I want my dollars spent on producing these pieces.
I’d rather they put my money where it can do the most good at defeating Liberalism.
As we’ve seen from MM’s Vent to Pajamas Media TV, it’s not how glitzy or Hollywood the video is, it’s what’s said there that’s important.
(I love RedStateUpdate and their set is deliberately cheesy!)

So are a lot of Shakespeare’s. Big deal.

Yeah, that’s what language is all about.

Unfortunately Steele is underestimating the power of the Manufacturing Belt.

Without their support, Reaganism will remain at room temperature and rot.

Steele needs to be pounding on Specter and Collins.

uh-uh.

Next time I’ll see a Palin interview, I’ll make sure to post a couple of quotes.

I can understand what she’s trying to say…

Phoenician on February 7, 2009 at 7:41 PM

Yeah, that’s what language is all about.

No, that’s not what language is all about. Language is about communicating. Since I understand English, I shouldn’t be guessing what she’s trying to say. And many times, when I she speaks, that’s what I find myself doing. Politicians should know how to get their point across.

I’m not saying Palin can’t talk or that she’s not speaking English. I’m saying that many times she puts across her sentences in a very convoluted manner, relying excessively on the passive tense. She uses 10 words when she could use 3 and it makes her sentences heavy and not easily understood.

I really have no idea if that’s how she usually talks, or if it just comes across in interviews in order to give her more time to think or something, but that’s my feeling.

ex-Democrat on February 7, 2009 at 8:36 PM

Give Steel a break!!!

He’s out there taking on Democrat positions and offering positive alternatives.

Isn’t this a refreshing change from the previous RNC which spent all its time nominating RINO’s and figuring out new ways to surrender to the Democrats?

I’ll take substance over set design any day. Let the Democrats become famous for worrying about such irrelevant trivia.

If you understand English, you can understand what she’s saying. She’s communicating. I don’t speak like someone from Boston, but yet I can understand someone from Boston without having to pass judgment on whether dropping final r’s is correct.

The beliefs brought upon by Reagan and his administration that:

• Starts with the presumption that the government can do nothing correctly.
• Allows the proverbial Wall Street to do whatever it wants
• Rely on the individual
• Sends off work to third world countries while doing relatively nothing for our citizens

Not fer nuttin’, but AP’s point about

Also, can we give the man a set worthy of his station? Obama’s been using warm lighting and handsome wood-paneled offices as backdrops for his video communiques since the primaries. This looks like it was shot during a commercial break on “Hannity.”

…is very duly noted.

And they’ll miss another opportunity here, with this one.

IMHO, brand design throughout the entire campaign was a major player for both candidates. As an amateur designer (even) it wasn’t difficult to see how dramatically different the brands were throughout the campaign. McCain’s team had a big-time early advantage over its local competition- and that came to benefit him down the road, until he ran into the buzz-saw that was the material being put together for Team O.

Obama, in truth, was branded better than any candidate has been since Billy Jeff in the Fleetwood Mac days.

Branding’s important not only for the competition but for the base. The right’s done a miserable job of it for about six years now, and it’s not helping. If the carrier of the message you send is amateur, then it is fair to assume that the message being sent is as well.

Time for the right to pony up and spend some cash as well as intellectual investment on this. It’s a tactical way to make a dramatic difference in tone that their opposition has discovered works. Now’s the time to make the investment, to take advantage of fantastic branding opportunities. before those too, like their contyrol of Government, is branded right out of their hands.

ChipDWood on February 8, 2009 at 12:50 AM

He needs to be on his game, as the media will be itching to compare him unfavorably to The One and these weekend message duels give them a perfect excuse.

Also, can we give the man a set worthy of his station? Obama’s been using warm lighting and handsome wood-paneled offices as backdrops for his video communiques since the primaries.

Are you really serious? I mean you think people are going to compare the RNC chairman with Obama? Did they compare Powell, Thomas, or Rice with Obama? Chair of RNC is insignificant. I am amazed that anyone thinks it matters.

As for the cool lighting and professional videos. . . Obama is THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! Next thing you know you’ll be lamenting that the RNC chair doesn’t get his own 747 either. . . and he might even have to fly coach (gasp).

If people are pinning their hopes on Steele for the ‘great comeback of the GOP’, you are going to be sorely disappointed. Although he’s a great token to get more black, northern, pro-choice Catholics in the GOP (you know, the base).

ThackerAgency on February 8, 2009 at 12:54 AM

After all the grief Oslime-a got over the exorbitant money spent on promoting himself, now we are going to bitch about the frugal set?

Americans are tired of the pomp these asswipes lavish on themselves! Remember Palin’s dresses? Oslime-a’s Greek columns? The 150 million dollar coronation of “The One”?

Steele’s message is as powerful or more so because he didn’t focus on superficial sets to give his message validity. It would do all of us who claim to be conservatives a service if we were to remember that.

csdeven on February 8, 2009 at 12:55 AM

Steele should have ended by using two fingers to point at his own eyes and then at the camera, saying “Snowe, Collins, Spectre…I’m watchin’ you!”

Bishop on February 7, 2009 at 4:26 PM

That is why I could never be in a position of real power like Steele. I’d have been tempted to point to my eyes with my index fingers and point to snowe, collins and specter with my middle fingers..

I guesss arlen wants to be a RINO to suck up to unicorn loving obama (both have one horn)

ThackerAgency on February 8, 2009 at 12:54 AM

I don’t know what the heck matters any more. Apparently the stupid/ignorant 52% of america didn’t think any of the following mattered

- Voting to throw babies in a storeroom to die of exposure/dehydration
- Closely associating with terrorists
- Espousing socialism
- Having close ties to marxists
- Seeking out marxist professors
- Having a wife who was never proud of america
- Grabbing his ‘package’ during the national anthem
- Sitting in a pew for 20 years with a pastor who yells GOD DAMN AMERICA
- Spouting idiocy like “Iran is a tiny Country”
- Not releasing any of his records
- participating in a land deal / board stuffing that would put any of us mortals in jail for decades.

Yep, I know what you mean, I’m really confused about what matters. Steele does have a personality and can provide leadership. I hope he’s ready for the biggest rectal exam every by the leftist media not to mention tax audits going back to his puberty.

bullseye on February 8, 2009 at 2:08 AM

Of course that didn’t happen. Too many people whined about our candidate, and left the door open for a man who, after a mere three weeks, has done more damage than any president except Jimmuh Carter did in four years.

MrScribbler on February 7, 2009 at 5:43 PM

Ah, another McCain suck*ss playing ‘if only..’ Yeah, let’s play that. If only we’d had a real candidate instead of some never was backstabbing fossil that everybody hated…If only we’d had a candidate who could articulate a message instead of endorse his opponent every time he spoke…if only we’d had a candidate who attacked his opponent during the election with the same gusto he attacked his VP nominee after the election. If only MrScribbler would find a hobby he was good at because he sucks at political analysis. If only.
