NYT: Obama thanked Collins, Snowe, Specter for their “patriotism”

Via Tom Maguire, marveling at how quickly assent has become the highest form:

The details [of the stimulus compromise] were negotiated at an afternoon meeting in the office of the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid of Nevada, involving Mr. Reid, other top Democrats and two Republicans, Susan Collins of Maine and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania. After they came to terms, the senators brought in the White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, for assurance that the deal was acceptable to the administration. Mr. Emanuel signaled it was…

Mr. Obama called Ms. Collins and Mr. Specter, as well as Senator Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, another Republican expected to support the deal, to acknowledge they were acting against pressure from their party and, one official said, to thank them for their patriotism in helping advance the bill at a critical time.

WaPo says the cloture vote’s tentatively scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday with a final vote due at noon the next day, hot on the heels of Obama’s Monday night primetime presser. In the meantime, here’s The One’s latest exercise in the politics of fear, another concept earning Strange New Respect these days among the fightin’ nutroots. Fun fact from Rasmussen: The spread between those who strongly approve and disapprove of him has dropped 15 points since Inauguration Day.

Wouldn’t you think that being thanked by Obama would be enough clue that they have screwed up? Simply do not understand these two women. Is there nothing under the sun that will cause them to do the right thing. Just the smell of a little money for Maine, no matter how ephemeral or fleeting, will have both of them groveling.

contact the members of the U.S. Senate listed below. They include the ten most conservative Democrats in the Senate, plus the Independent, plus a Hillary Clinton’s replacement who showed signs of conservatism. If you live in the states represented by these Senators, please both email them and telephone them!

HR1 is pending approval in the U.S. Senate and they will have just enough votes once Senator Kennedy returns from Florida. If any one of the people on this list votes against the bill, the American people will have more time to see what is in the $800 ’stimulus’ bill, and express their opinions to their Senator.

In a Republic, who is “the country?” Is it the Government which is for the moment in the saddle? Why, the Government is merely a servant – merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn’t. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them.

Hey,, anyone hear about this??? the stimulus bill has a nice little provision that says if you are a school/college and accept government money you are not allowed to have any religious activity on your campus. Wonder what other little tidbits are tucked away???

Well, Haley Barbour was on Fox Business last night, and said that the unemployment ā€˜help’ in the bill will only be paid to states that agree to change their own unemployment laws to allow anyone the feds decide deserves the payments to get them. I am sure each and every tidbit in the crap sandwich includes a provision to overturn current state laws.

More centralized government god planning.

Speaking of patriotism, where’s our entry about how Obama yesterday entertained family members of sailors who were killed on the U.S.S. Cole? A day after he drop charges against one of the bombers. Nice touch, he invites them to DC, they get in town, and then he breaks the news to them.

Obama is the biggest douchebag in the world. I can’t believe he turned the tables on those families like that. At least two families declined to show up. I’d be in front of every news camera in the country.

Yes, the other day Senator DeMint put in an amendment about that. There’s a video at his site:

Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) made the following statement after Democrats voted 43-54 against his amendment to strike language from the economic stimulus bill that discriminates against students of faith. Senator DeMint’s amendment would have eliminated a provision that bans any university or college receiving funds to renovate buildings, from allowing ā€œsectarian instructionā€ or ā€œreligious worshipā€ within the facility. This would in effect bar use of campus buildings for groups like the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Campus Crusade for Christ, Catholic Student Ministries, Hillel, and other religious organizations.

Roll call vote is here.

Today is an awful day to be a moderate Republican. I’m extremely disappointed in what Snowe, Collins, and Specter are doing. There is a difference between political moderation and compromising. To vote for this stimulus if you can only make a little less evil and stupid is still to vote for something evil and stupid. It makes no sense from any viewpoint which prioritizes free enterprise and limited government over socialism–which has to be the most basic core belief of why we are Republican.
I remain a moderate Republican, but I do feel deeply betrayed by the three Senators who best represent my views in the Senate.

This situation is getting so much more ridiculous every single day that it is impossible to see it continuing along these lines for very much longer. After all, there are only so many terrorists that the idiot messiah can release and there is only so much credit he can waste in an attempt to destroy our dollar, while hamstringing our economy for years to come.

Obama has to go and he has to go soon.

After watching McCain’s fake-looking outcry a few times, I’m beginning to wonder if the GOP is opposing the pork because it’s wrong, or are they just playing the same old GOP games that obviously don’t work anymore.

Since this all goes back to the House anyway–it can probably only get worse. I did e-mail Snowe telling her that she had essentially sold the birthright of future Mainers for the sake of a little, short term welfare money. Suspect my efforts were a waste of time and a tad overly dramatic–but what the H—she’s not my Senator. My Senator has crossed the lines to live with the enemy.(Gregg)

jeanie on February 7, 2009 at 4:03 PM

The last thing Collins, Snowe and Specter ought to be congratulated for is ā€œpatriotismā€. These three fake republicans are making a deal with Satan.

One of President Bush’s major mistakes was trusting Arlin Specter and giving him the benefit of the doubt. This error in judgment has put us all in harms way.

We had better unite, in spite of our differences, to defeat these Marxists before it is too late.

All it takes is a few… Republican Senators Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins and Arlen Specter committed treason tonight. That’s right, out and out treason. They took it upon themselves, these three megalomaniacal, mindless, bloated egos, to spit in the face of the entire Republican Party, virtually the whole economics profession and 67 percent of the American people,

to give Senate Democrats enough votes to pass Obama’s monstrous ā€œstimulusā€ bill.

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU HAVE DONE!????

This bill will NOT stimulate the economy. This bill will NOT create new private sector jobs. This bill will NOT help our current situation. It will destroy this country. This bill is a PAYOFF to Obama’s corrupt supporters at ACORN and in the UNIONS, the rest is a laundry list of Democrat pork and pie-in-the-sky projects that will only bear fruit YEARS down the road, if at all!

This bill is literally the worst legislation I have seen since I began paying attention to Congress over twenty years ago.

And unless Republicans pull off a miracle in conference, this bill is a done deal. GOD Help us all..

patriotism:

devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty.

Origin:
1720–30; patriot + -ism

patriot:

canditaylor68 on February 7, 2009 at 11:54 PM

To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.

Three gop decided to try to work with a brand new President in a time of crisis with millions of Americans hurt by this economic 9/11.

Three and you attack them.

Yes, the President is right and I join him in thanking them for their patriotism.

A real nit wit Troll.

Now, the President will attack them.

Senator Nelson of Florida did this today.

Men, it has been well said, think in herds, it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

Tav on February 8, 2009 at 12:50 AM

This may be a stupid question, but:

Is it possible to impeach a senator? Or is that reserved for executive positions like presidents and governors?

In getalife’s world everything is goose-stepping propaganda. Nothing is what it is because everything is what it isn’t. And contrariwise; what it is, it isn’t, and what it isn’t, it is. You see?

We hear praise of a power-wielding, arm-twisting President who ā€œgets his program through Congressā€ by knowing the use of power. Throughout the course of history, there have been many other such wielders of power. There have even been dictators who regularly held plebiscites, in which their dictatorships were approved by an Ivory-soap-like percentage of the electorate. But their countries were not free, nor can any country remain free under such despotic power. Some of the current worship of powerful executives may come from those who admire strength and accomplishment of any sort. Others hail the display of Presidential strength simply because they approve of the result reached by the use of power. This is nothing less than the totalitarian philosophy that the end justifies the means If ever there was a philosophy of government totally at war with that of the Founding Fathers, it is this one.

Did I miss something, or did Obama question the patriotism of all of the Republicans not trying to get this passed?

29Victor on February 7, 2009 at 11:22 PM

By saying those Republicans who voted for his ShitOnShingle were patriotic he implicitly declaed that those who did not were unpatriotic. That conclusion is logically inescapable.

MB4 on February 8, 2009 at 1:06 AM

So, any word on what little hussein gave these three twits in exchange for their votes?

ErinF on February 8, 2009 at 1:07 AM

The implication, of course, is that the rest of us are not patriotic. I’d rather be thought unpatriotic and support what is best for America, than to be thought patriotic and punt the mess down the road for our children and grandchildren to clean up.

unclesmrgol on February 8, 2009 at 1:17 AM

I triple dog dare anyone to call me unpatriotic just because I oppose the Porkulus Bill!
As a matter of fact, I oppose it because I am a patriot because it will do only harm to my country.
Our Founding Fathers did not pick up muskets and risk death at the hand of the British so that they could set up a government to pay for re-sodding the National Mall, doling out condoms or creating “green jobs” (and no one seems to know what “green jobs” are).
The Porkulus Bill is the only thing that is “shovel ready” because it’s nothing but sh!t.

Jenfidel on February 8, 2009 at 2:12 AM

Wow. Three Repubics sticking it to their party. Guess that makes them…mavericks. So, which one are we going to run for President in 4 years guys? Isn’t reaching across the aisle supposed to make us a better party? Don’t be too mad at them. The sting of betrayal will be gone by the next GOP primary.

This should be Obama’s theme song:

>> >> “Cult of Personality”

Look into my eyes, what do you see?
Cult of personality
I know your anger, I know your dreams
I’ve been everything you want to be
I’m the cult of personality
Like mussolini and kennedy
I’m the cult of personality
Cult of personality
Cult of personality

(((Here’s where Jimmuh and Algore sing back-up)))
Neon lights, a nobel prize
The mirror speaks, the reflection lies
You don’t have to follow me
Only you can set me free
I sell the things you need to be
I’m the smiling face on your t.v.
I’m the cult of personality
I exploit you still you love me

I tell you one and one makes three
I’m the cult of personality
Like joseph stalin and gandi
I’m the cult of personality
Cult of personality
Cult of personality

Neon lights a nobel prize
A leader speaks, that leader dies
You don’t have to follow me
Only you can set you free

You gave me fortune
You gave me fame
You me power in your god’s name
I’m every person you need to be
I’m the cult of personality
Look into my eyes, what do you see?
Cult of personality
I know your anger, I know your dreams
I’ve been everything you want to be
I’m the cult of personality

It couldn“t be more obvious.

a) Growth and wealth creation are not on their agenda.
b) They try to build this average recession into “the biggest crisis evah” for entirely selfish reasons.
c) Even if this were not the case, they are economic illiterates anyway.
