NYT: Obama thanked Collins, Snowe, Specter for their “patriotism”

Via Tom Maguire, marveling at how quickly assent has become the highest form:

The details [of the stimulus compromise] were negotiated at an afternoon meeting in the office of the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid of Nevada, involving Mr. Reid, other top Democrats and two Republicans, Susan Collins of Maine and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania. After they came to terms, the senators brought in the White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, for assurance that the deal was acceptable to the administration. Mr. Emanuel signaled it was…

Mr. Obama called Ms. Collins and Mr. Specter, as well as Senator Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, another Republican expected to support the deal, to acknowledge they were acting against pressure from their party and, one official said, to thank them for their patriotism in helping advance the bill at a critical time.

WaPo says the cloture vote’s tentatively scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday with a final vote due at noon the next day, hot on the heels of Obama’s Monday night primetime presser. In the meantime, here’s The One’s latest exercise in the politics of fear, another concept earning Strange New Respect these days among the fightin’ nutroots. Fun fact from Rasmussen: The spread between those who strongly approve and disapprove of him has dropped 15 points since Inauguration Day.

It’s time that we start rounding up candidates to oppose them if they sign onto this.

ConservativePartyNow on February 7, 2009 at 12:41 PM

If they want to run for re-election, let them run as Democrats. Allowing them to remain in the GOP is undermining its fundamental philosophy and doing the party more harm than good.

Snowe and Collins are the cheap whores of the Senate. They’ll drop their drawers if you waive a two dollar bill in their faces.

Percy_Peabody on February 7, 2009 at 1:04 PM

Sphincter, Collins, and Snowe could have AT LEAST changed their party affiliation and then voted for this cr@p sandwich.

Instead, they chose to BACKSTAB the Repubs knowing full well that it was their Repube affiliation that would give the Magic Marxist the “bi-partisan” lie to be trumpeted by the Goebbels MSM.

All 3 need to be Alinsky’ed personally, family members and staff included.

Take OFF the gloves people.

Let’s roll.

If they jumped ship back to the party, yes that would be a huge set back for cred to Obama, but Obama knows these fools and they will prove him correct.

BUT… we can still hope…

katy on February 7, 2009 at 1:07 PM

Obama is smart. He knows that without republican support his stimulous bill is going nowhere. I wonder what the republicans sold out to him for. It’s only a matter of time before we find out. Obama will have it leaked to the press after he has no more use for them.

Dont forget to add Spector to that list. He may be a guy,but hes still a cheap whore. I sent an e-mail telling him I was disgusted with his giving in to the fear mongering of Obama and his Chicago thugs.

I havent heard back from my last not too nice e-mail. I hope to God someone challenges him when hes up for re-election.

What did Snowe and Collins and Spectre get? Absolutely nothing. After they signed on, the democraps let it out that they would restore everything cut in Conference Committee, making these women (and I include Spectre as a woman) look like stupid sluts who gave themselves to a man for fake gold. What is it with these New Englanders. The democraps say that NEsterners are supposed to be the best and brightest but these dim bulbs, and Gregg included, are being played big time by below intelligence scam artists in Congress and the White House. It almost makes you think that intelligent design is not a bedrock principle in politics or elsewhere.

Those cowards in the GOP disgust me. I just put my 19 year old son (my only child) on a plane to South Korea for a two-year hitch in the United States Air Force. He’s willing to die for this country and the liberals appear hell-bent on killing this country.

How much more direct is this, when Wacky Baracky singles out three RINO Senators as patriotic, and thus implies that the remaining 37 as unpatriotic?

When did supporting Porculus become the test of patriotism?

Probably why patriotism is also voluntary for Democrats.

Senator DeMint exposes another hidden agenda buried within the stimulus bill. A direct and unConstitutional attack on freedom of religion.

In the meantime, here’s The One’s latest exercise in the politics of fear, another concept earning Strange New Respect these days among the fightin’ nutroots.

I mentioned this yesterday, with the help of someone who added something. In the WH press briefing yesterday, Gibbs noted the job-loss figure announced yesterday and emphasized that the figure was equal to the number of people employed in Maine [get that, Snowe and Collins]; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania [hear that, Specter]; and Cleveland, Ohio [loud and clear Voinovich]. That was juvenile. All four of them should have stood up in the Senate and told Obama to kiss the a**.

In each case, for scurrying RINOs, they can rest assured that they didn’t do sh*t for the economy, but the borrowed heavily to ensure that employees of state and local governments won’t miss a beat.

I still can’t believe that Santorum and Bush both backed this guy over Toomey. I’d rather have a Dem as our second senator than somebody who calls them self a member of the GOP. Although it won’t do any good, it was a fun project to whip up defeatspecter.org this morning. It’s never to early to take out the garbage. Maybe we in PA will get lucky and he’ll just retire but if not, a true Republican must step up and defeat him in the primary.

Here Comes the State
Paving the way for America’s Lost Decade

In 2001, Brink Lindsey wrote Against the Dead Hand, in which he contrasted the “dead hand” of central economic planning with the “invisible hand” of the market. The distinction is memorable. It is also slightly misleading. These days, the “dead hand” is very much alive.

Voters, then, have every reason to expect from Washington a stimulus bill that will help restore growth. But they aren’t getting one. The stimulus plan is flawed. It marries a few measures that count as stimulus with tons of spending on a domestic agenda that the Democrats have waited years to push through Congress. Why? Because Obama and the Democrats who run Congress are more interested in an idea than they are in economic recovery.

In the 1990s, Japan’s zombie banks contributed mightily to its Lost Decade. In slow, halting steps, America is creating its own zombie army. The results will be the same.

The issue is hubris. The issue is group-think. The issue is that Democrats are marching lockstep down a road that has been trod before, with nary a thought of the consequences. They ought to start preparing for the inevitable populist reaction. It will be swift. It won’t be pretty.

JT and Maxx, you may find the post above at newsbusters interesting. To add a point, I think (but I may be wrong) this POS bill says that if a building is renovated or constructed, then it can’t be used for any religious purpose. I don’t think it rules out the rest of the campus. That said, what kind of person would include such a specific provision. Bill Ayers and his wife could use their dorm rooms at Northwestern 40 years ago to plot domestic terror, but an informal Bible study could not. Go figure.

To all three, the social engineering included in this bill is unbelievable. And the Devil is really in the details. How can 535 people plus one idiot pass a $1 trillion package unless each one of them fully understands everything that’s going on in it.

A little know fact about Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, he was the one that invented the so-called “magic bullet” theory during the Warren Commission days. Yes, he’s been around that long, and he’s always been a snake in the grass.

Magic-Bullet Theory …. was introduced by the Warren Commission to explain how three shots made by Lee Harvey Oswald resulted in the assassination of United States President John F. Kennedy.

The theory, generally credited to Warren Commission staffer Arlen Specter[1] (now a U.S. Senator), posits that a single bullet, known as “Warren Commission Exhibit 399″ (also known as “CE399″), caused all of the non-fatal wounds in both President Kennedy and Texas Governor John Connally.

AZfederalist on February 7, 2009 at 2:23 PM

It is ALL about CONTROL. From birth to death, the federal government will have a hand in it.

DrStock on February 7, 2009 at 2:35 PM

BTW, all of this temporary federal help will ensure much higher state taxes, and once the federal bailout hits about $3 trillion, the only option is a huge rise in federal income taxes. “We have to raise taxes, we have no choice” will be heard in the not too distant future.

Vashta.Nerada on February 7, 2009 at 2:28 PM

Well, duh. That’s the point. Liberals want to explode the federal government, and then destroy the productive class with punitive taxes to pay for it. This really is about redistributing wealth, folks. Make no mistake. They want everyone to be “middle class” in this country – except for themselves, of course.

rockmom on February 7, 2009 at 2:36 PM

What did they gain for their “thirty pieces of silver”?

Kini on February 7, 2009 at 12:04 PM

The ultimate quid pro quo.

“Bi-partisan support” may be attempted to be used in the media and some deranged liberal Democrats, but make no mistake, this great American porkfest is owned by Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and every Democrat that made their payments to those who invested in electing them. In this process, it’s the people of this nation that are forced to pay for this irresponsible act. Not one word in this legislation was written that explained where this money will come from or how this government was going to pay it back. If stealing billions from Americans is called PATRIOTIC, I don’t care to be a patriot any more.

Rovin on February 7, 2009 at 2:36 PM

Snowe, Collins, and Spector are as patriotic as Benedict Arnold was. Forever you will be pariahs to the conservative community unless you have a change in heart and not vote for the package. I would you call you traitors but that appellation is too good for you all.

Eventually, taxes will not be sufficient and you will see much larger deficits, debt and inflation. this is the road Argentina took when the socialist/populist Peron took over and started a massive re-distribution of wealth nanny government campaign. They eventually ended up with hyper-inflation, price controls and massive foreign debt which had the IMF dictating their domestic policy and from which they have been spending decades trying to recover.

Wouldn’t you love to know what 0 promised the girls from Maine?

Oleta on February 7, 2009 at 2:42 PM

My two sons know what “patriotism” means–getting tossed around in decades-old Coast Guard cutters in the Bering Sea in the dead of winter. Search and rescue missions and national security.

Mr. Obama, don’t EVER lecture my family on what it means to be patriotic. There are thousands of families whose loved ones are in harms way. You cannot lead where you will not go.

DrStock on February 7, 2009 at 2:42 PM

Voting, talking, whining; the time for that is past. Whine and whimper until the day you die, if you like, it’s not going to change anything at this point.

Midas on February 7, 2009 at 2:43 PM

the stimulus bill has a nice little provision that says if you are a school/college and accept government money you are not allowed to have any religious activity on your campus. Wonder what other little tidbits are tucked away???
JellyToast on February 7, 2009 at 1:58 PM

Toast, the traitors Snowe Collins, Specter were bought off by some special pork in a closed hearing with Obama insurgents. They didn’t even read the bill and possibly don’t even care what is in it.

FireBlogger on February 7, 2009 at 2:46 PM

And a slimy piece of Chicago politician would know the definition of patriotism? Which tells us what the three really are.

sloopy on February 7, 2009 at 2:47 PM

What really infuriated me was Collins telling us from the floor last night what the American people want. She doesn’t care what the American people want, much less know.

No more Wicca or Islam? are you sure? Who wants to bet that this will be enforced for anything other than Christianity?

neuquenguy on February 7, 2009 at 2:51 PM

And yet again… Yet another reference to the past “eight years”. It’s truly as if he is still campaigning, still obsessed with Bush’s term. For all the talk that somehow he is a moderate, to me he just continually comes across as extremely partisan.

tartan on February 7, 2009 at 2:51 PM

Republican Senators.

Read the bill.

Read the bill.

(And while that is going on, put the fear of God into these traitors. Help them figure out what rationale they will use to explain to the American people how they changed their minds and will now vote AGAINST the bill.)

It is the only way they can save face (maybe).

DrStock on February 7, 2009 at 2:54 PM

This is still an EPIC FAIL for Obama. He can put all the “bipartisan” lipstick he wants on this thing, but it’s still a stinky Democrat pig.

Everyone knew going in to this session of Congress that Specter, Snowe, and Collins would probably vote with the Democrats on most bills. They always have, and Specter is up for reelection in 2010. But Obama failed to get a single other Republican to support this monstrosity. He is no uniter at all. I believe the House Republican vote was a HUGE slap in his face, and he is still obviously shellshocked by it.

The House Republicans exposed the nakedness of our new emperor.

rockmom on February 7, 2009 at 2:55 PM

f history was objectively written, I wonder if the FDR era will some day be seen as the beginning of this downward spiral that has made the re-distribution of wealth the main role of the government, and the number one campaign issue.

neuquenguy on February 7, 2009 at 2:30 PM

Let’s not let Teddy Roosevelt off on this one and his pushing for the federal income tax amendment!

Branch Rickey on February 7, 2009 at 2:55 PM

I posted this on another thread but, maybe someone on this one can shed some light.

Ok, hear me out on this. I’ve been in banking for 7 years so this is how I see things. Strictly business speaking.
Where is this money coming from? Who are we “borrowing” it from?
Based on that question we are entering into a “contractual agreement” with someone. We have the “lender” , the “borrower” (govt) and due to the fact that the govt doesn’t do anything to make money we, the American people could be considered the “co-borrowers” due to the fact that we are the govt’s income via taxes.
Ok, follow me, for those of you who have ever signed loan papers know that all information in the “terms of agreement” have to be spelled out and explained to all parties involved. Everyone has to be in agreement with the terms of agreement.
Now, based on that where is this said agreement? WHat are the terms, how is a payment default handeled? What is the collateral other than the American people? Why isn’t a copy of the agreement, if there is one, being distributed to us?
Maybe I am overthinking, but if we are being used as “collateral” what happens when we can’t pay this back?
Ok, thought over, please correct me if I am wrong.

milwife88 on February 7, 2009 at 12:24 PM

Only a change in currency can happen in your scenario. Consider this; we have known that the socialists are actually constructing a system where the government takes the place of God, this “god” will sustain you but only if you do its will. Now, considering that we are about to experience a crisis, and that the world is already clamoring for a new world order and a new currency, what do you think will happen when we can’t pay anything back, or when China wants to cash in those IOU’s?

The pressure to change currencies will be tremendous. Now, when we do change currencies, what one word will be taken out of the currency? Remember, the state must become the god, that’s why it’s so hostile towards Christians.

Can anybody guess which word? Who will the money no longer acknowledge?

Who do you trust?
