Collins: I might vote against the final stimulus bill if it’s too porky
posted at 5:29 pm on February 7, 2009 by Allahpundit
The Freepers are buzzing about this so I figured you’d want to see the clip. Note: She doesn’t mean she might vote against the final Senate bill. That’s a done deal. She’s talking about the real final bill, the one that’ll come back from conference committee after the House and Senate huddle next week. If they start dumping money back into it that was cut from this one — which is possible — then, in theory, she’ll pull the plug. Anyone see that happening realistically, though, considering (a) she’s already shown she’s willing to tolerate a more expensive bill than Nancy Pelosi, and (b) she’s had her patriotism sanctified by the blessed hand of The One? Worth every penny of that trillion.
If you want to make your feelings known, here’s her contact information. Please be polite. She’ll ignore you either way, but at least your conscience will be clear.

I live in NC. I sent very polite e-mails to Collins, Snowe, and Specter begging them to reconsider their support for this POS bill. Also e-mailed my 2 senators, Burr (R) and Hagan(D) – asking Burr to put the thumbscrews to the three RINOS, and telling Hagan that the bill sucks for all Americans, esp. in this state. I’ve also called both NC senators’ offices, local and in DC and talked with staffers at both places. I don’t know what good it will do, but my conscience is clear.
I got e-mail this morning from the RNC asking me to click on Michael Steele’s podcast. I replied, “If Mr. Steele cant rein in Collins, Snowe, and Specter on the Porkulus bill, then you can forget any kind of support from me.” Again, at least my conscience is clear.
I found some toll-free #s to the Capitol switchboard on Michelle Malkin’s site – tried them last night and they still work:
866-220-0044
877-851-6437
877-762-8762
and 800-833-6354 is paid for by the AMA – you have to go through some voice prompts and it will connect you to your senator’s office.
Another idea is to call or go your public library and ask if they have a copy of the Congressional Staff Directory, which lists key members of the staffs of all congress critters and senators. You can call them directly, and if the office mailbox is full, you may be able to leave a message on the staff member’s voicemail.

Isn’t Maine a “sanctuary” state?
Just sayin’…the incentives for both Senators from Maine to be the lone Republicans (so-called) (forgetting Spector for a moment here), just HAS to be that they’re from a state that’s got bills to pay that they assume the rest of the nation is going to cover, and, they’re not considering solving their own problems themselves (the state, that is, the two Senators from there).
I’m betting there’s a problem with Medicaid in Maine as also they now have a lot more unemployed or unemployable “low wage workers” and the reasons why are almost certainly because just a few years ago, Maine was waiving them all in.

The thing that really disgusts me isn’t a couple of turncoats on the Republican side — it’s that there isn’t a single Democrat in the senate with a soul and a clue. I’d have hoped that Lieberman at least would have borrowed one for the occasion.
suzy.denim@gmail.com on February 8, 2009 at 11:35 AM
WHEN this is passed we need to make sure it constantly hangs around the necks of Obama/Pelosi AND the necks of the back stabbing “republicans” who vote for it. It should be an albatross seen daily by the people. It’s time for Steele to show us what type of leader he will be. If he lets these “republicans” get away with this vote then we’ll know it’s just more of the same when it comes to GOP leadership. It’s time for him to shine or shame.

Long comment elsewhere
I wanted to comment on the stimulus mess – but it ran to 1,400 words… so I put it on redstate:
http://www.redstate.com/paul_murphy/
Comments would be appreciated.
In brief:
1 – you can’t borrow and spend your way out of a depression. You have to create wealth, and you do that by reducing impediments to investment, the investment then creates jobs, and the work done in those jobs creates the wealth.
2 – the cheapest taxes to cut are regulations – starting with CAFE
3 – the real problem is democrat missrule. You fix that by reducing their access to power and convincing the market that they’ll be gone after 2010.
Paul Murphy on February 8, 2009 at 12:13 PM
Maine is Maine. It’s a quirky state and always has been, they have an independent streak and their senators can only win if they say “I may be a [Democrat/Republican] but you know my first duty is to be an independent advocate for Maine.” You won’t see anyone win in Maine who doesn’t say something along those lines. So what people are expecting from Collins and Snowe? To break their campaign promises to their constituents in favor of the party’s will? Wouldn’t that make them “sheep.” Isn’t that just the kind of partisan hackery you folks don’t like? Or…more likely are you total partisan hacks yourselves.
And for those who can think beyond their anger, if you really threaten to cut Specter off from RNC funds and then he wins the primary, you’re fucked. The Democratic candidate will be able to run to the left and win because Specter will have a fundraising disadvantage. That’s what happens when you deinvest in a candidate, you give the other side more of an opportunity to direct the discourse to the left. Abandon Specter at your own peril and my delight muahahaha.

Not really. It would be “mavericky” of her to do something other than what might get her re-elected. But maybe most of the voters in Maine want this monstrosity, so if she’s reflecting her constituents she’s doing her job as well.

These people aren’t “beg worthy.” They need to be held accountable for their votes. I sent a letter to Collins telling her why she should vote against this bill but I also sent a letter to the Senate Relection Campaign Committee informing them that they wouldn’t be getting one cent from me if they financially support any Senator who votes to mortgage my great grandkids future.

So you replace a liberal Rep with a liberal Dem. You gain nothing, I lose nothing.
PS: no such word as deinvest. Maybe you meant to say divest. But that wouldn’t right either as you’d be using the word incorrectly in that context.
I thought all you liberals were like all smart and stuff, what’s going on here?
angryed on February 8, 2009 at 1:24 PM
Abandoning Specter has no additional peril than that which he presently represents. He thinks as a liberal, acts as a liberal, and votes as a liberal.
If a Democrat should beat him in the next election nothing has truly been lost to the Republican party, since he represents the true definition of a RINO. But if a true Republican were to win and replace him that would be a gain for the Conservatives
Again, at the least, losing Specter’s seat to the left is status quo.
You certainly lack in the areas of reality and logic, but that is to be expected to be obvious in any observation you make.
Yoop on February 8, 2009 at 1:27 PM
You know, this is getting old. Obama has repeatedly said over the last week that he won and America decided overwhelmingly in November for his ideas. And now Barney Frank says the same thing.
OK, we get it. You guys won. America wants what you are offering, right? Then why do you care what Republicans want. If you have overwhelming support from the American people then pass the bill and tell the American people you are giving them what they want.
Oh right, because it takes political courage to take full responsibility for this plan. They need the Republicans for one reason: to serve as human shields to share the blame when this thing sucks as bad as they know it will. What a bunch of cowards.

Wondrous post, AP.
I politely disagree with the politeness recommendation. I suggest that it would be more productive to make it nearly impossible for anyone associated with, or working for Collins to even show their faces in public, answer the phone, or read an email.
She should be ostracized with the most outraged, outrageous, vehement criticism imaginable for her idiotic support of this piece of garbage bill.
Our President is a lying scumbag, and the support of 3 schmuck Republicans in the entire congress has given this lying pig the nerve to go on national television and declare “support from Republicans” for his socialist spending orgy, despite the ridiculous lie that it is.
Thanks, Collins, you fool.

Pardonme but I have not been able to read all the comments concerning the “stimulus” package. One item that stands out in my mind is the billions that are going to go to ACORN. Does anyone else think, as I do, that that money will only come back to the democratic party in the form of “contributions”? When ACORN can establish as many false names and identities as they have in the past, they can now attach tax payer dollars to those names and control elections down to whatever level they desire. It is a shame that people like Sen. Collins don’t fight something like this with all their might instead of just going along to get along.
Pardonme on February 8, 2009 at 4:20 PM
Too early for open preparation. They may be traitors but Collins, Snowe, and Specter have the power of the incumbency. It really comes down to refusing to support GOP umbrella organizations if they spend one cent on keeping these people in Congress.

I posted this earlier and believe it applies here:
FEAR, False Evidence Appearing Real, never has worked in any situation other than to get out of a burning house or jump over a fence to avoid a pit-bull. However, FEAR has been used by every president during the last 80 years to ram through every piece of seriously flawed rules and legislation that either promotes a self seeking agenda or line the pockets of their friends. This is no different than the emergency bailout last fall except the President now has a “D” after his name instead of an “R”…. As FDR said, “There is nothing to fear, but, fear itself!” Let us instead have some real leadership on the part of our President and Congress that gives us hope, which will be much more effective than the FEAR based, empty rhetoric that we have been getting. Any legislation that comes out of a team effort, where all are aligned on a positive outcome, will be much more effective than a pork laden bill that will drive our economy further into the tank.

Interesting prediction from Gwynnie at Maggies:
Norman Mattoon Thomas (Nov. 20, 1884-Dec. 19, 1968) – some of us are old enough to remember him running for President – was a leading American socialist, pacifist and six time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America.
Norman Thomas said this in a 1944 speech:
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of “Liberalism”, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” He went on to say: “I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democratic Party has adopted our platform.”

It’s better to have Democrats than the usual suspects of Republicans that the media highlights to show bipartisanship and ‘balance.’ Look at somebody like Chuck Hagel, his entire importance came from the fact that he was a Republican that continually slammed Bush on Iraq. McCain could have won had he been that coherent and meant it. Fact of the matter is that McCain’s record doesn’t back up some of the claims he’s making. Yes, in some ways he’s not been the “fiscally responsible” Senator he claims to be. Better than some but hardly the guy I would pick to lead the way.
The one thing I’d like to ask him is why exactly he “appreciates” Obama talking to GOP politicians. The filthy bastard should be talking to everybody and taking ideas from everybody. The filthy bastard has repeatedly told the GOP they have no voice in these decisions because he won. Then he endorses a plan that is essentially the DNC wish list. Why on earth is McCain cutting the filthy bastard any slack here???

The “real” cost of capital is rising as the slump deepens. This is textbook debt deflation. It was not supposed to happen. The Bernanke doctrine assumes that the Fed can bring down the whole structure of interest costs, first by slashing the Fed Funds rate to zero, and then by making a “credible threat” to buy Treasuries outright with printed money.
Mr Bernanke has been repeating this threat since early December. But talk is cheap. As the Fed hesitates, real yields climb ever higher. Plainly, the markets do not regard Fed rhetoric as “credible” at all.
Who can blame bond vigilantes for going on strike? Nobody wants to be left holding the bag if and when the global monetary blitz succeeds in stoking inflation. Governments are borrowing frantically to fund their bail-outs and cover a collapse in tax revenue. The US Treasury alone needs to raise $2 trillion in 2009.
Where is the money to come from? China, the Pacific tigers and the commodity powers are no longer amassing foreign reserves ($7.6 trillion). Their exports have collapsed. Instead of buying a trillion dollars of extra bonds each year, they have become net sellers. In aggregate, they dumped $190bn over the last fifteen weeks.

Got an error. It doesn’t matter anyway.

Collins VM box is full. Fast busy signals, which mean the lines are overloaded at both of Snowe’s numbers, as well as at Specters.
Heh.

We have to have at least three Republicans to get it to Cloture, then they should vote against it. If we block it from coming to the floor already, it will be a PR win for the Democrats, that we caused the continued crash. If we let it get to a vote, then vote against it 100%, it is hung around the Democrats’ necks, the cloture vote is forgotten or becomes “I was for it before I was against it” escapability.
I want them to vote for cloture, then vote against it when their votes don’t matter. Dems, with cloture, can pass it without Republicans.

I’m in agreement with the sentiment here. What good are liberal republicans if they just vote with the Dems on the most critical of issues. This is just blatant back stabbery and I hope someone throws these three idiots out of office, for legitimizing this crap sammich called a stimulus bill
If republicans were truly smart, and I know they aren’t. They would say to hell with this spending bill why dont we give EVERY working American a one year Tax holiday so they can ignite this economy! Thats basically a trillion dollars that I would say is well spent, I say. This BS about bailing our the morons that gambled away our savings is a load of crap and so is the socialist agenda. Republicans need to stand strong and not get their name tied to this boat anchor.
