Octuplets’ mom pretty sure she’ll be able to pay for kids — after she’s out of school

She’ll get around to it eventually. But first she needs to get that master’s degree she’s had her eye on. And then the money, it shall flow like a mighty river.

How much worse can this story get? Dude:

Nadya Suleman, 33, became pregnant with all 14 of her children after a 1999 injury during a riot at a state mental hospital where she worked, state Division of Workers’ Compensation documents show.

She stopped working, but had the six older children during that time, notes Early Show national correspondent Hattie Kauffman…

There were also mental health issues, Kauffman reports. Suleman was labeled as being at some risk for suicide, and diagnosed with a “depressive disorder.”

She collected just north of $165K in workers’ comp, which got cut off last year. The injury reportedly prevents her from “prolonged sitting, standing and walking,” but as long as none of those skills are required, the job market’s wide open. Exit question: Lauer asks Ann Curry how she’s planning to pay for the kids while she’s in school, to which the reply is, “She’s trying to figure that out.” Was even a moment’s thought given to financial planning at any point during this pregnancy?

amerpundit on February 6, 2009 at 6:28 PM

School? Ridiculous. Why? She assured herself of a full time job with her birthing addiction.

Can you imagine the stupidity of her sliding out to school every morning leaving the baby care to someone?

Also, no matter what she studies she will never earn the amount of money it will require to keep those 14 children fed and clothed. Poor kids.

FireBlogger on February 6, 2009 at 6:28 PM

Its the same amount of delusion it took to birth 16 babies as it takes to think even a Psychiatrist makes six figures and that much isn’t enough to support through college that many children.

Speakup on February 6, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Allah,

Leave it to you to focus the hate away from the crime going on in the Senate on an idiot Californian.

Here’s the quick response:

This woman is an unhinged loon who shouldn’t have any children let alone 14.

Her parents are enablers who should be ashamed of themselves.

Her doctors should have their licenses revoked for allowing this pregnancy in the first place.

Where did this woman get the money for the treatments necessary for this birth?

Why did she seek to bring life into the world when she’s unemployed and living at home (re: the enabler comment).

I hope this woman’s 14 kids don’t suffer but I have no compassion for the mother (aka birth unit).

highhopes on February 6, 2009 at 6:31 PM

I listened in horror to her today. She isn’t even fazed by the enormity of raising 14 children to be useful citizens. There really is something wrong with her. She hasn’t a clue about what she’s taken on or the responsibility she’s shouldered. Those kids and she need to be under constant scrutiny. There is trouble ahead.

Maxx on February 6, 2009 at 6:32 PM

Why should she be “wished well?” for this?

The anti-Christian crowd hates the Duggar family who have 17? kids (and a series on TLC) but you know what. Those kids are happy, the family doesn’t rely on welfare to raise their kids, and they are really a family.

Not the case when an unemployed woman decides to pump out an additional eight lives with no apparent means of being able to support them.

It’s obvious this woman is demented and has some sort of Angelina Jolie complex. Jolie has many children (and at multiple births as well), but look at this woman’s face — she’s obviously had work done to try and look like the actress. Sad…

Freaking train wreck. Anyone who hits adulthood and immediately seeks personal identity through mass offspring has a host of issues. Fourteen kids is a nightmare, expecting the public to be amazed and impressed, yielding money and goods is outrageous.

Even more sick is the attempt at using this to bash pro-lifers, strawmanning that they support it, which I don’t.

Child abuse.

The point (regardless of what you read here) is not to denigrate the woman; the point is to learn something as a society – so that this does not happen again.

I think it safe to assume that everybody hopes, at the very least, that her children grow up happy and healthy. But there are doubts about that happening – because of her choices.

“She’s trying to figure that out.” Was even a moment’s thought given to financial planning at any point during this pregnancy?

Oh, I think that article makes it clear she has a financial plan and has identified a revenue source…interviews, articles, book sales, Oprah….the NBC story was just free publicity to to bait the hook.

NBC News says it didn’t pay for the interview, but her spokesman, Mike Furtney, made it clear to Kauffman that Suleman hopes to make money from her story. “What we’d like to see her wind up with is the means to raise her 14 children in the way that she wants to do that,”

BTW, she has a spokesman! Pretty clear to me what the plan is…she knows how this country works now.

bridgetown on February 6, 2009 at 6:43 PM

Yeah, bridgetown. Let’s wish her well. In fact, let’s do more than just wish her well, let’s have all the male participants on HA head on down to her doc’s office and donate our sperm so that she can have enough seven more kids, bringing the total to 22. Then they could have two teams to play touch football against each other!

You say “what is wrong with you all” — what’s wrong with YOU that you can’t see that no one single woman with no means of support should be popping out children to make up for a lonely childhood? That schtuff is already going on among teenage girls nowadays, but most of the time, they wise up after one or two, and there is usually someone they can sic the law on to help pay for their young ones. This lunatic planned to have seven children without a father (hello, Dan Quayle!), and seems to think that her masters degree (In WHAT? From WHERE?) is going to bring her enough money to raise a family of FIFTEEN in a job market where people with track records of success and marketable skills are taking pay cuts and going into fields unrelated to their degrees. ‘Wishing her children well’ is wishing at least some of her children go to (preferably) married couples who are responsible members of society, not staying in a madhouse run by a mad woman who can’t take care of herself without workers’ comp!

And please, knock off the gratuitous, out-of-context “cast the first stone” nonsense. In that scriptural account, nobody dared stone the harlot to death, but that didn’t mean nobody had the right to call her a harlot because she was a harlot! Sorry! This woman is a lunatic and I’m not going to pretend she’s not just to be “nice.”

“Get real” is advice you should follow.

Certainly, Americans historically had large – and poor – families. But those large families served a specific purpose: free, high-quality labor. If you lived on a farm in Tennessee in 1870, your 14 children were how you survived. They pitched in and you all ensured your collective survival.

But you think THAT is what’s going to happen here? You think these 14 children are going to turn into a 21st century version of the Walton family?

Please. You know perfectly well what is likely to happen to this family and these children. Get real indeed.

I want to know:

1) Is this woman and her family covered by private health insurance or medicaid (or SCHIP)? I know she gave birth at Kaiser, but I have it on very good authority that she isn’t a member of that health plan. If her maternity adventures have all been on the taxpayer’s dime, it isn’t really accurate to say, as she has, that she isn’t on welfare.

2) Who paid for the in vitro? It’s a very pricey procedure that isn’t covered by most private health plans or, I assume, any taxpayer funded program. Or am I wrong about that?

It would be nice if the MSM had a little more curiosity about this aspect of the story.

And in our current culture where two kids is one too many for most, I’m kinda glad to see someone have a ton of kids even though I think she’s made horrible decisions.

Esthier on February 6, 2009 at 7:19 PM

Exactly, she isn’t on Welfare. She is very pretty. Her mom told her that when she came home she wouldn’t be there. Wonder if she kept her word?

sheebe on February 6, 2009 at 10:05 PM

That’s not fair. Those type of women are paid by men for the privilege of “donating” their sperm. She paid the privilege of receiving it.

L.N. Smithee

Maybe that’s how she intends to support her new, huge family.

/sarcasm

That said, how on earth can this woman hold down a job? Child care for 8 (or more) children will far exceed any salary that she can make; she’ll lose money by getting a job. Perhaps, when they are in elementary school, she can get a 9-5 job for them, but any job that pays good money requires hours that are incompatible with being the single mother of 14 children.

The thing that people always forget about Darwinism is that if there are too many dumb members of the species, not only do they die, but the entire species does, too.

Roxeanne de Luca on February 6, 2009 at 10:21 PM

She says all she ever wanted was children and all she ever wanted was to become a mother. And she purposefully decided to have 12 children and 2 extras popped into the scene, and she says that it turned out perfectly.

That sounds like the very definition of crazy to me, even if she was married. Her being a single mother (and in school for that matter!) makes it even more insane.

TheBlueSite on February 6, 2009 at 10:52 PM

I don’t understand how she says she’s going to be “available to her children” and yet she’s going to go to school and get a job to pay for them. How do you make yourself “available” to 8 infants, or to 8 toddlers at a time, not to mention the other six children, plus go to school and get a job.

I have nothing against large families, I think they can be great, but it should be done in a responsible manner. At least have either the money to pay for it, or a spouse or significant other who is there to support you and give their time to the children.

We obviously aren’t seeing what’s going on behind the scenes so I can’t judge her abilities as a mother, but honestly this shouldn’t be something that we embrace or encourage. That said, I wish nothing but the best for the children. They are innocent in this whole deal.

thevastlane on February 6, 2009 at 11:11 PM

This “she’s not on welfare” nonsense (here of all places) has to stop. She may not collect welfare per se, but her medical and delivery costs (which a friend informs me will be in the millions) are all on the taxpayers’ dime. And, although I haven’t had this confirmed yet, I’ll wager her kids’ healthcare is covered under medicaid or SCHIP.

And then there’s her education. Who do you think paid for her college education and, since her circumstances guarantee that she’ll be financial aid eligible well into the future, who do you think will be financing that graduate degree?

Wake up, people.

Infidoll on February 6, 2009 at 11:15 PM

Now why on earth would she worry about paying for her own kids when she KNOWS that we’ll pay for them.

Don’t worry, be happy. Yes we can.

What does she mean, she took a risk? What risk? Single parents are the major supplier of criminals for our society by the way. (I was a single parent for many years so don’t get riled.)

Mojave Mark on February 6, 2009 at 11:59 PM

Maybe my math is way off, but if she holds each child for 45 mins, isn’t that 12 hours or more per day of holding the kids?

TheBlueSite on February 7, 2009 at 12:04 AM

I am sorry i did watch her and she has something wrong upstairs..
i can sense it..

I’ll put in the first $100 to have this psycho-hosebag’s holes sewn shut.

Here is the funniest part of this story to me: With this whack job in California, now Angie Everhart is pregnant and bound to raise her child as a single mom…how come the MSM isn’t calling Ann Coulter back for an interview about that chapter in her book about the glorification of the single mom??????

chief65 on February 7, 2009 at 1:09 AM

I feel so bad for those babies, they are never going to get that quality one on one Mommy and Daddy time. Kids need it. I’m an expert in these matters my wife and I raised three kids.

Dadzilla on February 7, 2009 at 2:19 AM

I think I read somewhere that she was seeking a parenting show on TV.

What really cracks me up is that out here in SOCAL, the local radio hosts call her “OCTOMOM” That’s freaking hilarious. It brings to mind the image of a comic book hero. I can just see it now:

In a small town in Southern California, two masked men barge into a bank with guns drawn, “Put em up, gimme all the money in a bag NOW!” The poor scared teller says,HELP! Where is OCTOMOM??!!Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, she sees a breast shaped searchlight reflected off the clouds, THEN, just a few minutes later, the doors crash open and in comes, O C T O M O M ! ! !She’s twenty feet tall with seven legs stuffed into fluffy slippers and 18 breasts in a powder blue spandex body suit with a big yellow O on a red shield between each one of her breasts, but you can’t see them because she has a baby in a sling hanging in front of every one of them. The sucking from the babies is so strong that her body seems to contract in and out giving her pulsing body the motion of a beating heart. Her head looks like the queen bee in Alien three…with curlers. Her ears are so sharp as to hear the slight movement of a cookie jar top from the other side of the house. Her superhero utility belt is stuffed with pampers and talc, and when she turns around, you notice a gummy bear stuck to her ass. As she moves her tremondous girth through the doors, breasts quivering and dripping lactation all over, people slipping in the breast milk trying to run out the doors, screaming in terror. The bank robbers, suddently smelling milk, turn around and with a look of absolute horror on their faces scream in unison,Oh My God!! It’s O C T O M O M!!!!Octomom takes one of the shoes off a foot and zings it at the bank robbers bouncing off both their heads. Octomom yells at the robbers in her angriest voice,You are grounded for a month BUSTER, with NO NINTENDO!!Then one robber starts crying and sobs to Octomom,That’s not fair, he made me do it!

Just a thought.

This lady is a danger to her kids and they need to be taken from her and put in a foster home where they can receive proper care from a loving parent who isn’t just having them to make money from a publicity stunt.

Vegi on February 7, 2009 at 5:16 AM

When the Doctors said they were ready to murder as many as asked for for a practical number, I wanted to kick said professionals in the nuts.

That doesn’t bother me as much as the likelihood that the doctor implanted those eight embryos to begin with.

eaglescout1998 on February 7, 2009 at 5:44 AM

You know, 14 Cabbage Patch Kids would have been a lot less expensive.

fusionaddict on February 7, 2009 at 6:37 AM

She only holds these poor babies for 45 minutes out of the day. Babies need held…and rocked. No way she can give them that…and she says she loves these babies. What a selfish love.

becki51758 on February 7, 2009 at 6:51 AM

Read an article about this lady on aol yesterday. It said that she testified in her worker’s comp hearing that her injuries (she had a desk thrown at her during the riot) made it impossible for her to care for her child (this was when she only had one, apparently). The state of California needs to be investigating more than just the clinic that did the 6-embryo implantation, IMO. They also should be investigating why a woman who claimed she was too seriously injured to care for one child was somehow able to have 13 more.

The article also said that the woman had been married for 12 years. She divorced after the riot injury, and said that her divorce was partly due to those injuries. (She said it made her depressed and difficult to be around, and she wanted her husband to move on with his life). So I doubt she’s a virgin, as someone suggested above.

Also saw an ob/gyn on a cable show estimating that the cost of birthing and after-care in ICU for the 8 infants would be over $3 million.
