No, it’s not bipartisan when only 2-3 Republicans vote for it. Not by any stretch. Let’s hammer that point home.

GOP needs to distance itself as far as possible from this Trojan Horse (and from those of its own who support it), as it’s a sell-out of our economic heritage and a train wreck in the making.

Meanwhile, I’m faxing GOP-PA to see who will be running against Specter in the upcoming primaries, and telling them if Specter is nominated again, I’ll be voting Democrat, even if it means voting for Chris Matthews.

What’s the point of a $500B counter-proposal? All the Reps have managed to do with this 1/2 stimulus plan is legitimize this Keynesian insanity. What’s the point of a republican party if they just act as shoddy-breaks to the socialist freight-train? The counter-proposal should be to slash the corporate-tax and freeze spending on the next fiscal budget. If the Reps can’t fight back but only slow them down all while undermining themselves by accepting the left’s premises, there’s no point in trying because we already know how it’s going to end.

Is it OT to note that Byron York on The Corner indicates that J. Gregg has indicated he will recuse himself from any vote on the stimulus? Seems that his personal ambition (Cabinet post) are more important than the interests of the voters who elected him. If non-partisan means without regard to party, does non-cajones mean without regard to integrity?

Gregg is actually a very smart man. By “recusing” himself, he avoids offending his new boss a few days before he starts the job without really affecting the outcome at all.

It takes 60 votes to end debate in the Senate. Not 3/5 of those present or voting. Gregg doesn’t have to vote “no” on cloture – neither does any other Republican. They can ALL abstain if they like, because cloture fails on a 59-0 vote just as it does on a 59-41 vote.

It’s true the move prevents Gregg from voting “no” on the final measure, but if the Democrats can cobble together 60 votes for cloture, passage is assured and “no” votes are once again merely symbolic.

The HA old timers know my long held antipathy for McCain. But when I heard a replay of his rant today, I cheered.

Too bad he isn’t ~~always~~ less rarely like this.

Lindsey hasn’t totally sucked on this bill either.

Remember this is FAR from a done deal, once this passes the House and Senate have to fight it out, and the House is pissy that some of their crap is being cut, so that will take a while. Then we get the chance to deny cloture again, it gives us a little more time to work on Spector et. al. However, just for the pure Mr. Smith entertainment value I would LOVE to see McConnell call for a REAL filibuster, not these chicken little cloture/no cloture deals they have done in recent years.
