Breaking: Senate centrists reach deal on stimulus? Video: 30% chance we’ll get it wrong, says Biden; Update: Spending cuts to be reinstated? Update: Kennedy flying in for vote

posted at 5:46 pm on February 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

Dude.

A group of Senate moderates working on an amendment to cut up to $100 billion in spending from the economic stimulus package have completed a tentative proposal that will be presented to Senate Democrats at a 5:30 p.m. caucus meeting, Senate Budget Chairman Kent Conrad told reporters. “There is a proposal that is sufficiently fleshed out and we will have a caucus and discuss it,” Conrad said after emerging from talks in Senate Majority Leader Reid’s office. Democrats hope the proposal, developed by Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Ben Nelson, R-Neb. [SIC], will attract several GOP supporters and be acceptable to all Democrats, which would allow for passage of the plan as early as tonight.

Prediction time: How many Republicans vote yes?

Update: AP says the final price tag would be $780 billion.

Update: Cowards:

Reid suggested to reporters that he had two GOP backers for the bill but needed at least one more because neither wants to be the crucial 60th vote if all 58 members of the Democratic caucus support Obama.

Mel Martinez is also in the mix with Collins, Snowe, and Specter, but he’s unlikely.

Update: Under other circumstances this would get its own post but it’s essential context for this thread. It’s the Sex Panther stimulus!

Update: So narrow is the margin here that Democrats expect Teddy will have to be roused from his sickbed to cast the 60th vote for cloture. He’s in Florida right now, so if that’s true, the roll won’t come tonight.

Update: What a scam. Carl Levin says that the money being yanked out now to get the bill through the Senate might very well be reinserted during the conference committee with the House.

Update: CNN says the vote is expected tonight, and Teddy’s expected to be there.

I really don’t believe anyone is getting a tax cut in this deal. Our country would not be able to run properly with only 30% or 40% paying taxes. If that happened, elections would be the least of our worries.

from the movie 1176:

John Adam (played by William Daniels), “We are starting a revolution: we going to have to offend somebody!”

Soooo, anyone offended by this east coaster’s assessment of a speedy death to Sen. Chappaquiddick – keep that quote in mind! There will have to be a “Boston Tea Party 21st Century Style” and it isn’t going to be pretty.

Defending freedom is why; the 2nd Amendment is so necessary! “Well-Regulated Militia” – were the founding fathers not ahead of their time or what?

As for the heel to Dodd’s slice of bread in a *waitress sandwich* : he has WAAAAAAy worn out his welcome on this planet.

Isn’t the census not due up till 2010? Will the gerrymandering happen before/after the mid-terms?

I don’t know, worth researching.

Keep this in mind, by the time of the next census, we will already have amnesty, that means that they will count all the new immigrants, that changes everything, they will be bribed with Obama’s handouts, La Raza and LULAC will demonized Republicans, they WILL eventually vote Democrat. That’s why I have always found it so odd that Republicans would rather choose amnesty instead of the rule of law. Mexicans, in the end, will vote overwhelmingly for Democrats, the Republicans are shooting themselves in the foot. White America, take if from this Mexican, you are in a crapload of trouble.

Jesse on February 7, 2009 at 12:01 AM

We’re already fairly close to that ratio once you factor out all the math. High income earners and corporations shoulder the overwhelming majority of the tax burden, in other words, the top 1%. The majority of people that Obama has proposed “tax cuts” for already do not pay income tax. That leaves the middle class, who will either fall in with the lower income earners under Obama’s proposed plans and pay little to no taxes or will get taxed into bankruptcy, which is more likely considering that we are about to accumulate an additional $3 trillion in debt within the first 60 days of the Age of Obama.

Then you have 2 of our largest manufactures, GM and Chrysler, who are using their TARP dollars to move their operations out of the country. US corporations already pay the highest tax rates on the globe and he proposed to raise them further. The corporations with enough resources to survive will be stupid not to move overseas.

fiatboomer on February 7, 2009 at 12:15 AM

if you guys haven’t seen the video of Obama talking smack to the House Demonrats, you’re missing the sleasiest crap I’ve ever seen from a sitting President.

This is true. One of the most classless performances I’ve seen from a President. If you disagree with him you are engaging in “petty politics” or the same “failed ideas of the past”. His cracks about having the debt handed to him with a big bow on it was the worst. Especially since he will be handing the next President a debt that makes the one he inherited look like a shopping spree at the Gap.

The funny thing is that all we heard about Obama was how he has a great temperament. Well, he hits his first hurdle as President and that great temperament shows itself in sarcasm and shrill, partisan finger-pointing. He runs to the left as fast as he can to the bosom of Pelosi and Reid.

Amazingly though, watch how many Op-Eds this weekend praise Obama for going on the offensive and showing amazing leadership to get this bill passed when it looked like it was stalled. As if peeling away 2 or, at the most, 3 liberal Republicans was some great show of leadership and bipartisanship. They will ignore the classless rantings and fearmongering of last night to the House Democrats. Watch how many media outlets will now refer to this as a bipartisan stimulus bill. Disgusting.

@Damiano

I wouldn’t call what I have as faith in our system. More like faith in history. I know where you are coming from and I would probably feel the same way if I didn’t think we stood a chance to overcome this.

I just don’t think that Obama or his henchmen can ruin this country to the point of no return, no more than I believe farting cows can destroy the ozone layer.

It won’t split, they might have some defections if Blue Dog Dems have any honor, but the party won’t split. Unfortunately, I see what remains of the conservative movement confined to a small third party that would have to form a European-style coalition with the “moderate” party to get anything done.

I wasn’t born to sack and slaughter
But on my soul, I wasn’t born
To stoop and knuckle under
A man can learn to steal some thunder
A man can learn to work some wonder
And when the gauntlet’s down,
It’s time to rise and climb the sky
And soon the moon will smolder
And the winds will drive
Yes, a man grows older but his soul remains alive
All those tremulous stars still glitter
And I will survive!
Let my heart grow colder and as bitter as a falcon in the dive

There was a dream, a dying ember
There was a dream, I don’t remember
But I will resurrect that dream
Though rivers stream and hills grow steeper
For here in hell where life gets cheaper
Oh, here in hell the blood runs deeper
And when the final duel is near
I’ll lift my spear and fly
Piercing into the sky and higher
And the strong will thrive
Yes, the weak will cower while the fittest will survive
If we wait for the darkest hour
Till we spring alive
Then with claws of fire, we devour like a falcon in the dive

Jesse on February 7, 2009 at 12:41 AM

Jesse, I admire your level-headedness and determination.

Here’s the thing…

It’s fine to say you aren’t going to sit on your hands. It’s fine to say that you’ll contest the consolidation of power by the Democrats. But what does that entail, really? I mean, we have a Supreme Court which says a regular citizen does not have standing to question the Constitutional qualifications of an elected official in court. What good will resisting do when a Court won’t even hear your arguments because they’ve decided you have no standing to make them?

I think it was Lenin or Stalin or someone who said that who votes doesn’t matter…what matters is who counts the votes. What good will making an argument do when organizations like ACORN are overwhelming local election boards with fradulent voter registrations, and the SCOTUS refuses to step in because, again, they’ve decided an ordinary citizen lacks standing to protest in court? And keep in mind this is the Court who said it’s fine for a government to use Eminent Domain to seize someone’s house because putting a shopping mall there can generate more tax revenue.

For that matter, a huge segment of the population says HR 1 is a bad idea and they don’t want it passed…and yet the Congress is poised to do just that, in direct defiance of the People. When Congress is no longer afraid of the People then there is a serious problem.

I don’t want to be the guy here agitating for an armed revolution because I think right now it’s still hyperbole. However I do confess to a growing sympathy for Mencken’s words:

Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and start slitting throats.

At the risk of sounding melodramatic…respect for the rules only works when both parties have the respect. When one party doesn’t…well, it’s the reason dialogue with Iran won’t go anywhere and why debating Obama is similarly fruitless.

JohnTant on February 7, 2009 at 1:06 AM

Something that struck me today, was the way “Conservative” pundits talked about having the need to reinvent Conservatism…

Reinvent Conservatism… isn’t that kinda an oxymoron?

More and more I’m looking back the the founding Father’s, especialy Jefferson… for a workable Governmental philosophy…

We really need to rebuild the REPUBLIC… not the Republicans… rule of law is no longer the basis of our Society… as has been shown by the Congress taking too much power unto itself… and even Obama stopping the CLEARLY Legal Military Tribunals… Due process is no longer in place, we now have the tyranny of a man who was elected by the masses.

With over 50% of the electorate soon to pay no taxes, Democracy has failed.

As I said months ago… the next Revolutions battle cry will be… NO REPRESENTATION WITHOUT TAXATION!

Romeo13 on February 7, 2009 at 1:06 AM

By it’s very nature, capitalism creates wealth while socialism consumes wealth. Socialism kills motivation, innovation, and productivity and creates stagnant economies. Some attempts at socialism have lead to communism and fascism. Socialism fails always, not sometimes, not occasionally, but every single time. These facts don’t change with public opinion polls. Here’s an idea. Since we got rid of Iraq’s dictator an helped them to implement a democracy, perhaps they can come over here and return the favor.

It seems fair to me, we go rid of their Hussein. The least they could do is get rid of ours.

Damiano on February 7, 2009 at 1:12 AM

This is true. One of the most classless performances I’ve seen from a President. If you disagree with him you are engaging in “petty politics” or the same “failed ideas of the past”.

actually it is now officially unpatriotic…

…Mr. Obama called Ms. Collins and Mr. Specter, as well as Senator Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, another Republican expected to support the deal, to acknowledge they were acting against pressure from their party and, one official said, to thank them for their patriotism in helping advance the bill at a critical time.

Topsecretk9 on February 7, 2009 at 1:13 AM

Update: What a scam. Carl Levin says that the money being yanked out now to get the bill through the Senate might very well be reinserted during the conference committee with the House.

It’s something I’ve never understood. As a child, I thought that the identical bill was voted on in both houses before going to the President for signature or veto. I would expect that having the two houses vote on different bills and then presenting one of the bills for the President’s examination would be unconstitutional. Apparently, that’s not the case.

As for the three “Republican Senators” who will vote in favor of the stimulus bill as it stands, I will be contributing to their opponents in the next primary.

despite the fact that I maintain that we will NEVER recover from what is about to happen, I am just jumping back in to throw my awesomely awesome late night monologue-ish comment:

Man, this stimulus bill, have ya heard about this thing? I tell ya what, makes me long for the days when our biggest concern was about Bill being stimulated! (rimshot)

For that matter, a huge segment of the population says HR 1 is a bad idea and they don’t want it passed…and yet the Congress is poised to do just that, in direct defiance of the People. When Congress is no longer afraid of the People then there is a serious problem.

JohnTant on February 7, 2009 at 1:06 AM

It’s of considerable help to Congress that there isn’t an election any time soon. They’ve got to ram this crap through as soon as possible.

We teach them to take their patriotism at second-hand; to shout with the largest crowd without examining into the right or wrong of the matter, exactly as boys under monarchies are taught and have always been taught. We teach them to regard as traitors, and hold in aversion and contempt, such as do not shout with the crowd, and so here in our democracy we are Obama is cheering a thing which of all things is most foreign to it and out of place, the delivery of our political conscience into somebody else’s keeping. This is patriotism on the Russian plan. The true American patriotism, the only rational patriotism, is loyalty to the Nation ALL the time, loyalty to the Government ONLY when it deserves it.

John thank you.

I don’t want anyone to think I would be against a serious armed revolution if it came to that. I just don’t think this idiotic spending bill is the last straw. Remember this was also the same Supreme Court that upheld the 2nd Amendment.

Proving I think we have not lost them yet. I’m sickened with you that it seems evil is winning. Yes ACORN help Obama win (steal?) this election. So should we let them have another one, or fight them?

We have so much work to do upon the arrival or 2010. I think it does us no good to “say goodbye to America” and occupy ourselves with too much hyperbole. Instead we should do what we have been doing tonight. Keep calling and putting pressure on them. Let them know you won’t support anymore of them with your money if they are just going to piss it away.

They work for us even if they think they don’t. It’s time to remind them of that. Pressure kept every House Republican from voting for that spending bill. Who would have thought that would ever happen? Not me! If we can muster the strength to do that, imagine what else we can do.

That is why I have hope. And I wish more did too.

As I understand it, if it passes, it goes to committee to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate versions, then off to the Preznit’s desk. In between, it has to get voted on again but it’s mostly procedural at that point.

Not that it matters. The *cough* “bipartisan agreement” (if you consider 2 Republicans selling out to be bipartisan) called for eliminating 100 billion from the bill, which cut it to 700 billion and change. Within 45 minutes, it was back up to 820 billion and in excess of the House bill again. In addition to that, we’ve already got TARP III in the works, as confirmed by Schumer during this session. The only thing accomplished by the “concession” was to give Specter and Collins political cover. The bill is still as fully pork loaded as it ever was and all meaningful amendments were voted down.

We hear praise of a power-wielding, arm-twisting President who “gets his program through Congress” by knowing the use of power. Throughout the course of history, there have been many other such wielders of power. There have even been dictators who regularly held plebiscites, in which their dictatorships were approved by an Ivory-soap-like percentage of the electorate. But their countries were not free, nor can any country remain free under such despotic power. Some of the current worship of powerful executives may come from those who admire strength and accomplishment of any sort. Others hail the display of Presidential strength simply because they approve of the result reached by the use of power. This is nothing less than the totalitarian philosophy that the end justifies the means. If ever there was a philosophy of government totally at war with that of the Founding Fathers, it is this one.

Yes but with only 3 Senators. They and only They own this debacle with every Democrat. We have to make sure that the Republicans never hear the end of this. This we lost, but not by a large margin. I was thinking at least 10 would go for it.

That shows the power we have in making our voices heard. Obama only got this because Democrats are in control. We can’t let up with the pressure. We have to keep pushing our agenda, not theirs. We proved it could be done. Hope is not lost. Believe me.

I’ve sent emails to Senators Collins, Specter and Snowe telling them what I thought of their support for this democrat crafted special interest slush fund that will put us on the road to socialism. In looking up Senator “magic bullet” Specter’s contact information, I absentmindedly typed “Spectre”. :)))

How I wish 007 was here to save the day.

My 2 Senators and Congressman got the same basic email. Surprisingly, one of the Congressmen from my state, but not my district, had his email system set up NOT TO ALLOW comments from outside his district. How democratic of him…

But if we stop fighting and instead throw up our hands and say “nothing we do matters”, then yes, they will win.

Jesse on February 7, 2009 at 1:49 AM

Jesse, I have to disagree with you on one thing, WE HAVEN’T “been here before”. Dude, we have a president who is already spending money about 100 times faster than the last president who was apparantly wrong for spending so much. We have a president who without a doubt, is sympathetic to muslim terrorists. We have a president who was put into office while hiding his financing, hiding his birth certificate, hiding his college records, and who was completely given a pass on his devotion to a wide range of friends, associates and even his own preacher who are all America hating radicals. He even made many racists hate statements in his own two “I am so great” biographies.

Look man, this man does not have the good of the country in mind. He has specifically run for office with the intention of taking apart this country and destroying the economy to the point where we cannot go on as a democracy. He is working for the people who HATE America.

Have you not noticed that when he was elected, every scum bag in the world who hates America was celebrating. That are a lot more informed than the idiots in America who voted for this Manchurian Candidate. In just two weeks, he is already dropping this country into so much debt that the odds that it will cause our economic collapse are extrememly high.

So I beg to differ with you Jesse, we have not EVER been here before!
