Barney Frank: Hey, let’s cap executive compensation for everyone

posted at 7:18 pm on February 6, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Socialist creep. And I mean that in both senses of the term.

Congress will consider legislation to extend some of the curbs on executive pay that now apply only to those banks receiving federal assistance, House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank said.

“There’s deeply rooted anger on the part of the average American,” the Massachusetts Democrat said at a Washington news conference today.

He said the compensation restrictions would apply to all financial institutions and might be extended to include all U.S. companies.

The provision will be part of a broader package that would likely give the Federal Reserve the authority to monitor systemic risk in the economy and to shut down financial institutions that face too much exposure, Mr. Frank said…

Mr. Geithner said he would consider “extending at least some of the TARP provisions and features of the $500,000 cap to U.S. companies generally.”

It’ll never pass — I think. Granted, we shouldn’t underestimate the appeal of a populist gesture to offset the anger that TARP II’s going to cause, but McCaskill and then Obama and Geithner all paid lip service in their public statements on this subject to the idea that private entities can pay their employees whatever they like. Only when they need rescuing from the feds should the government be entitled to a say, or so the theory goes. If Democrats are planning to expand the concept, they’d better have a handy explanation for why their current position is wrong. Just like they’d better be prepared to see donations from Wall Street tilt sharply to the GOP. (Or had they?) Exit question: Tough talk from Frank or does he really mean it?

Barney is running as fast as he can because if he stops someone might remember that he was one of the major causes of this mess.

Why isn’t this fecal matter encrusted corrupt incompetent pervert not hanging by his heels in the town square, along with his mistress Fannie Mae boy toy?

Hanging is too good for Barney Frank. He’d probably enjoy it.

So, to Barney Frank:

Yeah, he means it, but at this point it’s just a floater to see if it sprouts wings and flys…after the stimulus debacle though, we’ll have to see if messiah picks it up…I think no, after he just squeaked porkulus through. But Fwank is persistent…it’s a view of things to come…maybe TARP II.

Let’s cap Congressional pay. Make it proportional to the money they save the US taxpayers. No savings? No pay. Performance based-wages? What a novel idea. Start them off at minimum wage. That’s in the populist spirit. After all, the Founders never expected to have this Nation support a professional political class.

The very idea of Congress enacting or even considering legislation to cap anyone’s pay…shows how little they understand the great economic experiment that built this country…and made insignificant people such as Barney Frank the millionaires they have been allowed to become.

coldwarrior on February 6, 2009 at 7:27 PM

Does Barney think there should be a cap on their salaries? Nah…they just voted themselves another increase.

Cody1991 on February 6, 2009 at 7:28 PM

Lets put a cap on Congress $55,000.00 a year.

Irrelevant. The political class has become so powerful that they no longer need a salary to make money. They’ll be paid one way or another for not bringing an antitrust lawsuit here, for sending out a stimulus there, &c.

“explanation”? From Democrats? LOL.

The idiot messiah will jump up and down and scream about how he wants what he wants and he won and that’s that.

Democrats have no explanations for anything and have never felt bound by anything they might say on a given day. All they care about is the federal government taking over every little bit of control and power that exists in our country. They are intellectual slugs, and the Precedent is the slimiest of them all. If only there were a big salt shaker …

I really hope that everyone who promoted the idiot messiah’s great intellect feels intense guilt about having driven this country toward oblivion.

Kid from Brooklyn on February 6, 2009 at 7:33 PM

Democrats don’t care about tax revenues. The idiot messiah was clear about that point during the campaign when he said that he would raise capital gains taxes even if that meant decreased tax receipts, since that was the moron’s idea of “fairness”.

Besides, dems figure that, if tax receipts fall, they can just confiscate wealth. In fact, they’d rather just confiscate wealth. They’re just looking for any excuse to do so.

Tommy_G on February 6, 2009 at 7:37 PM

I have to think this would never stand up to a court challenge on some kind of Constitutional grounds. Equal Protection? Perhaps Unreasonable Search and Siezure (in a way, it could be said the proposal siezes their pay, I guess)? The ones in favor would probably argue they are just regulating Interstate Commerce, a provision the Constitution actually allows for.

This really would be the end of the United States, game over, and there’s no more quarters. Every one of these companies would relocate overseas, and probably even become citizens where there are no salary caps.

In a twisted way, I actually do like the fact the Dummycraps are pushing ahead at Warp 7. It lets us all see just what they all really think and want for this country.

And then we can cut Congresses pay.

tarpon on February 6, 2009 at 7:42 PM

Hey, I have an idea.. Let’s tie pay to performance for congress and Potus..

Start with their base pay.

Deduct

1. 5% FOR Every percent over 5 for unemployment
2. 5% for every billion of debt including SS.
3. 10% per 1000 people killed that year in terrorist incidents
4. 5% per 1 million illegals in the country
5. 5% for each 1% that inflation exceeds 3% per year.

In addition, every member of congress and Potus will have their taxes blind audited by an IRS and Independent auditor each year and that will be compared to their filings. Penalties as follows

5% underpayment – 25% penalty.
10% underpayment – 50% penalty and unable to hold future offices
15% underpayment – 75% penalty, removal from office and a mandatory 10 year jail term

Who didn’t know this was coming?

The other day when Obama said “There will be times to make profits. Now is not that time,” it reminded me of the time Bill Clinton said of Affirmative Action, “nobody said it should go on forever.” I screamed at my television for someone to ask him under what circumstances it should end, but of course, nobody wanted to ask him because it would box him into having to provide an answer. I will not hold my breath until someone asks “When will the time for profits come again?”

Lest we all forget that Barney Frank was greatly responsible for blowing off the warnings of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac’s troubles (pun not intended), here’s the video proving it. I think the agencies should be renamed “Barney Mae” and “Frankie Mac.”

Has anyone else wondered why Armando Falcon Jr. — the regulator who warned us all about Fannie/Freddie landmines in 2003 — hasn’t been rewarded with a government agency? Just another reason to believe it isn’t intelligence or competence that gets one a job in Obamalot, it’s ideology.

L.N. Smithee on February 6, 2009 at 8:20 PM

Now that Fannie Mae is at the epicenter of a financial meltdown that threatens the U.S. economy, some are raising new questions about Frank’s relationship with Herb Moses, who was Fannie’s assistant director for product initiatives. Moses worked at the government-sponsored enterprise from 1991 to 1998, while Frank was on the House Banking Committee, which had jurisdiction over Fannie.

Both Frank and Moses assured the Wall Street Journal in 1992 that they took pains to avoid any conflicts of interest. Critics, however, remain skeptical.

“It’s absolutely a conflict,” said Dan Gainor, vice president of the Business & Media Institute. “He was voting on Fannie Mae at a time when he was involved with a Fannie Mae executive. How is that not germane?

“If this had been his ex-wife and he was Republican, I would bet every penny I have – or at least what’s not in the stock market – that this would be considered germane,” added Gainor, a T. Boone Pickens Fellow. “But everybody wants to avoid it because he’s gay. It’s the quintessential double standard.”

A top GOP House aide agreed.

“C’mon, he writes housing and banking laws and his boyfriend is a top exec at a firm that stands to gain from those laws?” the aide told FOX News. “No media ever takes note? Imagine what would happen if Frank’s political affiliation was R instead of D? Imagine what the media would say if [GOP former] Chairman [Mike] Oxley’s wife or [GOP presidential nominee John] McCain’s wife was a top exec at Fannie for a decade while they wrote the nation’s housing and banking laws

The two lived together in a Washington home until they broke up in 1998, a few months after Moses ended his seven-year tenure at Fannie Mae, where he was the assistant director of product initiatives. According to National Mortgage News, Moses “helped develop many of Fannie Mae’s affordable housing and home improvement lending programs.”

Critics say such programs led to the mortgage meltdown that prompted last month’s government takeover of Fannie Mae and its financial cousin, Freddie Mac. The giant firms are blamed for spreading bad mortgages throughout the private financial sector.

Although Frank now blames Republicans for the failure of Fannie and Freddie, he spent years blocking GOP lawmakers from imposing tougher regulations on the mortgage giants. In 1991, the year Moses was hired by Fannie, the Boston Globe reported that Frank pushed the agency to loosen regulations on mortgages for two- and three-family homes, even though they were defaulting at twice and five times the rate of single homes, respectively.

Three years later, President Clinton’s Department of Housing and Urban Development tried to impose a new regulation on Fannie, but was thwarted by Frank. Clinton now blames such Democrats for planting the seeds of today’s economic crisis.

“I think the responsibility that the Democrats have may rest more in resisting any efforts by Republicans in the Congress or by me when I was president, to put some standards and tighten up a little on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac,” Clinton said recently.

Frank is way past his wrist and up to his elbow in this mess but has been able to spin this as a Bush problem and due to a lack of regulation, not oversight and inforcement (which he blocked).

moxie_neanderthal on February 6, 2009 at 8:21 PM

Tough talk from Frank or does he really mean it?

He’s always been anti-business. One thing should be reminded is, Frank is the ROOT of this whole problem. He wants business to bend over and grab the ankles.

Something he enjoys all too well.

Why isn’t the Obama Administration launching an
immediate across the board ‘Cutback Crusade,’on
the Liberal Party, cutting back on salaries,
on their expenses,

if,Obama wants to go after the so-called
DIRTY ROTTEN FILTHY RICH*,in this Financial
Doomsday Scenario that the Liberals conived,

to put them in POWER,then, shouldn’t everyone
feel the pain,or is the Liberal Party EXCEPT
from any aspect of their DEVIOUS SOCIAL ENGIN
EERING PLANS THAT HAVE RUN AMUCK,brought to you
in part by Barney Franks!

*(canopfor has ascertained, that to be in the [DRFR]
bracket, for an American, you need to earn over what
‘Joe the Plumber’ earns,or close!)

but McCaskill and then Obama and Geithner all paid lip service

Can we please refrain from using the term lip service in an article that has anything to do with Barney Frank please. A little respect for the heterosexuals that have been been bent over all week with this stimulating package of pork pie.
We’re all going to be walking bow-legged for decades for decades to…..you know.
