16, 19, 23, indefinite?

Barack Obama’s pledge to withdraw from Iraq on a 16-month timetable looks even more doubtful after a review by his top military and diplomatic advisers, McClatchy reports.  Even a 23-month timetable carries considerable risks to Iraqi stability, according to their reviews:

Responding to a request by President Barack Obama, top military and diplomatic advisers on Iraq have submitted a report to the White House that spells out the risks of drawing down U.S. forces in Iraq over periods as long as 23 months, two defense officials told McClatchy.

The multiple options are the first indication that the Obama administration may be willing to abandon a campaign promise of a 16-month withdrawal.

Army Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, the top military commander in Iraq, and Ryan Crocker, the outgoing U.S. envoy there, with input from Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of the U.S. Central Command, provided “a unified assessment” to the White House in recent days, an official close to Petraeus said.

“On Iraq, we were asked to provide projections, assumptions and risks on accomplishing objectives associated with 16-, 19- and 23-month drawdown options,” according to one senior defense official’s account of the meeting. The commanders and Crocker didn’t recommend an option, but instead spelled out the pros and cons of each timetable.

Since winning the nomination, Obama has softened his position on Iraq, so this may not come as much of a surprise.  Since winning the election, Obama has made very pragmatic moves in defense and in the war on terror rather than bring in more ideological advisers.  That alone suggests that the 16-month timetable, which would be about as fast as the US could practically run away from Iraq with their equipment, will get bypassed.

Obama crafted that message in early 2007, when he wanted to differentiate himself from Hillary Clinton, but the situation has changed in three important ways.  First, Iraq has become much less violent over the last two years, which Obama finally acknowledged in the general election.  American troops are no longer at the same risk as they were prior to the “surge” and the pacification of Iraq.  Second, the Iraqi Army has finally taken its place on the field, allowing the US military to act in support and logistics roles rather than front-line combat.  Lastly, the status-of-forces agreement signed by the outgoing Bush administration envisions a settlement of the US forces in Iraq by the end of 2011, and that allows Obama to simply do nothing if he chooses and allow our invitation to expire.

If the Obama administration is willing to consider a 23-month timeline, why not a 36-month timeline, especially if American forces are taking no casualties?  The Iraqis seem willing to keep us in the country on their terms in the SOFA, and that gives us a strategic position in that region.  I’d expect this to be a topic on which we will see a much more nuanced position from Obama in the next few weeks.

Before the election ….Hope & Change……now… I Hope no one realizes i am not Changing Bush’s policy in Iraq

At least the Messiah won’t be waving the white flag of surrender.

technopeasant on February 6, 2009 at 3:51 PM

Now this is change I can believe in.

Obama: “I made a mistake about Iraq and I believe that staying is prudent, so long as the Iraqi’s ask us to stay. I still say that Bush’ war on Iraq and the surge were incredibly short sighted ideals however. But I think we should cap the Iraqi President’s salary to $500,000/year”
Obama’s legion: “Oh he’s so smart, you never heard the rethuglicans or Bush say anything like that.”

Skywise on February 6, 2009 at 3:57 PM

Mr. Obama LIED his way into the presidency. Period.

pullingmyhairout on February 6, 2009 at 4:03 PM

But, but, but…he was going to get us out of IRAQ! because…because BUSH! is bad…and stuff. I don’t understand!?!

Why would anyone expect President Ogabe to stick to a firm withdrawal date? I mean, after all, that was only a campaign promise. He hasn’t kept any of his other campaign promises.

HUH??? Have we been living in the same Universe?

Panneta at CIA?
Closing GITMO?
Dropping charges on the Cole planner?
“Torture”?
Just gave 20 million in relief to GAZA?
Stopping Military Tribunals?

This is a report from the Pentagon to the Pres… it is not the Barry’s position.

Romeo13 on February 6, 2009 at 4:06 PM

Let’s hope that what he means by Hope and Change is…. That he changes his mind about being President and does it with the Hope that people will understand. Bye bye – he can’t handle it. It’s been 2 weeks and he’s cracking. That’s what happens when a bunch of idiots elect somebody that hasn’t even held a job!!!

suzyk on February 6, 2009 at 4:06 PM

If Obama said a chain saw was a tomato, there’s still a good chuck of his supporters who would try to carve a Husqvarna up and put it on their hamburger while claiming Bush is an idiot war criminal, because they’ll believe anything Barack says. So if Obama wants to keep the current Iraqi policy while satisfying his main Bush-hating backers by saying up is down and day is night, I’m less concerned than if he actually does change the policy and screws everything up.

Fine, me too. The problem is no one is calling him to the carpet on his lies.

I actually heard some moron on the radio yesterday try to justify Obama’s lies by saying that he ran more on hope than change.

I was screaming and cussing at the radio.

Why WOULDN’T he want to stay in Iraq now? Their economy is in much better shape than ours.

My collie says:

He’ll probably sell our presence there as a necessary part of an economic stimulus for both Al-Qaeda terrorists and Iraqi undertakers and grave diggers — who are now suffering an unprecedented economic crisis.

+1

Bambi is in a military bind.
1) Military is bad; takes away from welfare.
B) Military needed to quell “citizen unrest”.
III) Military needed to repel foreign enemies.
4) Military bad as usually revolts first.

All four conditions exist simultaneously. Attention to reduce any one allows the other three to expand. What’s a poor inexperienced dictator to do?

HOPE for NO CHANGE. Promote incompetent leaders and try to bribe foreign threat. Produce famines. Reduce military pay and replace it with extortion. That’s the historic pattern. That’s also the pattern that was best expressed in the French Revolution.

Is this hurry, hurry the way to overcome 233 years of Freedom? The proposed laws are SOS for any fascist takeover. Best idea, hang tough on every bit of “legislation” from these turds. The slower it goes the more exposure. Besides, it’s one less stupid law that must later be overcome.

I see the liberals though will do anything
to ensure they get the defeat they want..

You must understand the democrats
do not care
if by their actions 10 million iraqis die

as long as they can do the pullout and pin the blame on the former president george bush they will be happy

these liberals make me sick..
as soon as we can even show that liberals are causing either iraqi deaths or american deaths

it will be very hard not to respond to the liberals traitorus acts..

I want to see Cindy Sheehan chain herself to the White House fence.
I want to see CODE PINK disrupt DOD hearings.
I want to see International ANSWER parading down 5th Avenue and across Trafalgar Square with fanged & bloody puppets of The One.
I want to see LANCET cook the books on Obama’s body count of dead Iraqi civilians.
I will settle for maintenance of the Status of Force agreement and to never, ever, ever have to hear from another Hollywood twit on this again.
Oh, and I predict that somewhere, someone is readying a bestseller (circa 2011) titled Bush’s Triumph: The Making of Democracy in Iraq.

Bruno Strozek on February 6, 2009 at 4:40 PM

crazy_legs on February 6, 2009 at 4:54 PM

“Obama has made very pragmatic moves in defense and in the war on terror rather than bring in more ideological advisers.”

He is pragmatic for only ONE REASON; the U.S. gets attacked again, he can kill his ass goodbye in 2012. He can argue all he wants about his stimulus crap sandwich, but an attack on the U.S. won’t be covered up by glib chatter from a teleprompter.

GarandFan on February 6, 2009 at 5:02 PM

This reeks of inexperience, and proves that The One is in way above his head.

This is what America voted for. Happy now?

Did I do that right?

kafir,
an argument along that line is coming soon enough

rob verdi on February 6, 2009 at 5:18 PM

Obama lied, people died.

Impeach the war-monger.

This is going to be fun, isn’t it?

I can’t call him a chimp, though. Despite the fact that, objectively speaking, he’s the one who actually bears a far greater resemblance to our simian friends. But to say so would be raaaaaaaaaaacist.

So I’ll stick with war mongering chicken hawk.

IMPEACH NOW! SAVE THE POLAR BEARS AND STUFF!

Professor Blather on February 6, 2009 at 5:22 PM

It won’t matter. Most of the great unwashed who voted this guy in stopped paying attention on November 6th once their Obamagasm wore-off. They stirred in their sleep on innauguration day, but are now back in full-snooze mode.

They won’t be asked to wake-up again until October, 2012.

Black Adam on February 6, 2009 at 5:26 PM

Here’s something to think about for a possible political nightmare for President O. Suppose he does renig on his absolute promise to get us out of Iraq by May 20, 2011 (16 months), but keeps his promise to close gittmo and release the inmates there. And then suppose sometime after 5/20/11, it is found that some of those released terrorists went back into action and killed American soldiers in Iraq? I hope someone is keeping score on blame.

MikeA on February 6, 2009 at 5:29 PM

It must be time to start calling for IMPEACHment. The liberals did so for this very reason.

War criminal!
Illegal secret negotiations!

Global Warming Enabler!

Circa 2012;

Just about four years ago, I set out again on the Army road,
Seekin my fame and training, lookin for a pot of gold.
Things got bad, and things got worse, I guess you will know the tune.
Oh ! lord, stuck in Obama’s Iraq again.

Flew in on a big plane, I hope I’ll be in one piece flyin out when I go.
I was just yet again passin’ through, must now be yet another twelve month tour or more.
Running out of time and patience, looks like they took more of my friends.
Oh ! lord, Im stuck in Obama’s Iraq again.

The Hope and Change man in the White House said yet again I was on my way.
Somewhere I lost his connection, he ran out of words to say.
I came into Baghdad, yet another one year stand, looks like the plans to finally get out yet again fell through
Oh ! lord, stuck in Obama’s Iraq again.

Mmmm…
If I only had a woman, for evry tour Ive done.
And evry time Ive had to fight while people back home sat there power drunk.
You know, Id like to catch the next plane back to where Im from.
Oh ! lord, Im stuck in Obama’s Iraq again.
Oh ! lord, Im stuck in Obama’s Iraq again.

The Democrat strategy was to get in power, not on the war, but on whatever issue was viable. The war merely seemed most viable at the time.

The economy crashed, which made Iraq irrelevant, so don’t expect a shred of accountability for Obama’s 180.

The crashed economy is Obama’s Okalahoma City bombing. That means it’s the best possible thing that could happen to a democrat. When the disgraced and impeached Bill Clinton reflected on his failed presidency, he said that Oklahoma City was a gift to him because it was political capital in his pocket, even as he did nothing to earn it. All he had to do was stroll around biting his lip.

Similarly, the economic collapse that happened under Obama’s watch gives him cover to change the subject. The war? Yesterday’s news. For a Democrat, there is never, EVER a principle behind the statement. The statement is whatever needs to be said to this audience at this time to remain viable.

You must never forget that.

How much of Obama’s crap are you willing to forgive if he gets it right on Iraq and Afghanistan?

If he gets the nature of the war right, and actually *prosecutes* the war, I’ll forgive his pre-election stumbles.

As I figure I have a better chance of winning the lottery, you’ll forgive me for not preparing my appology speech…

If we pull out before the Iraqis have a robust police and military capability, disaster will ensue, as Al Qaeda and Iran will surely move back in and destabilize the fledgling nation at will.

Maybe the One can grin at Ahmedinejad and Osama and everything will be just peachy.

At least the Messiah won’t be waving the white flag of surrender.

Not in this particular theater in the war on terror, at least. However, kissing butts in Iran and apologizing to them is akin to surrendering on may levels…surrendering our dignity, surrendering our position of strength, surrendering our ideals, and surrendering the battle for Israel’s survival.

Regardless of what Al Qiada is saying, Obama is a terrorist’s wet dream of a President.
