Transparency, Chicago style

Barack Obama, when building his stimulus plan, asked governors and mayors around the country to supply his administration with a list of “shovel-ready” projects that could create jobs quickly.  While most cities and states have publicly disclosed their wish lists, Chicago and Mayor Richard Daley remain defiantly silent.  When asked why Daley doesn’t get into the swing of the New Transparency, he gave a rather honest answer:

Unlike hundreds of other cities, however, Daley said Chicago won’t make its list public.

“Yes, we do, we have our list, we’ve been talking to people. We did not put that out publicly because once you start putting it out publicly, you know, the newspapers, the media is going to be ripping it apart,” Daley said.

After Duluth’s request for a snow-making system, one can understand Daley’s point.  His reticence suggests that Chicago’s list is filled with snow-making machines or their pork equivalents.  Maybe Chicago needs wind machines, or winter icemakers for Lake Michigan. Perhaps they need another sports franchise that won’t win a championship in 100 years, or maybe they want to buy the one that the Chicago Tribune has tried to sell for the last several years.

We’ll never know, though, thanks to Daley, who seems afraid to have anyone take a look at the list.  If a public figure starts hiding information from the media and his constituents,it’s a sure sign that something bad or embarrassing can be found in it.  With Daley and his machine, though, that’s practically a given. In a democracy, of course, the media should hold government accountable for its excesses, corruption, and abuses.  That’s the point of the First Amendment protection of free speech against government censorship, and the point of transparency initiatives like the Freedom of Information Act.  Daley’s fear of this speaks volumes.

Will the Obama administration release the information themselves?  After all, Obama talked endlessly about making government more transparent during the campaign, and this list will be used by the federal government for allocation of federal resources.  If Obama is serious about transparency, then he needs to release this list even if it embarrasses his old Machine boss.  If Obama doesn’t, then we will once again see the very narrow limits of Hopeandchange.

I love Chicago and Illinois – they are blatant about their corruption over there.

They need more (federally funded) frisbee golf courses in Austin!

lorien1973 on February 5, 2009 at 1:00 PM

I wonder if Fitzgerald has the list. Probably not. I imagine Hizzoner doesn’t use the phone much anymore.

We did not put that out publicly because once you start putting it out publicly, you know, the newspapers, the media is going to be ripping it apart,” Daley said.

Yeah, we don’t want those stupid people to have any input…

Never fear. Disclosed or not, O’bumbler will be happy to fund pork programs for his hometown mindless supporters.

Now if that list was only part of a sealed divorce settlement……

Wine_N_Dine on February 5, 2009 at 1:03 PM

It’ll probably include more latte makers for the Chicago Public School systems for $1,000 a pop to replace the fifty that they lost under Arnie Duncan’s stellar leadership… eyes roll.

Illinidiva on February 5, 2009 at 1:06 PM

Wow, I’m so glad we elected Hope and Change and rescued him from Chicago. It’d have been a pity to have The One Lightworker tarnished by every other politician in the Windy City.

Techie on February 5, 2009 at 1:07 PM

The List:
1) $2M for Blago lawyers.
2) $25M for finding Al Compone’s vault.
3) $1B for the Olympics (not for sites or infrastructure, but bribing Olympic officials.

WashJeff on February 5, 2009 at 1:08 PM

I’m sure The Chosen One will honor the mayor’s request for confidentiality. What are friends for.

GarandFan on February 5, 2009 at 1:09 PM

No, no, no. It’s not that Daley’s embarrassed, it’s that he’s still accepting bribes, er “campaign contributions.”

Why waste an opportunity to rake in more cash. It’s a bleepin’ valuable thing.

Illinidiva on February 5, 2009 at 1:06 PM

Of course, 100 members of the school staff have yet to receive their latte makers.

Wonder if $$$ is on the list to fund Michelle’s replacement at the hospital.

Christien on February 5, 2009 at 1:11 PM

Same old story, same old song and dance my friends! The list didn’t have anything that would give or create jobs. Machines? I have a head ache.

0’s lastest push for the stimulus reminds me so much of a used car salesman trying to convince someone with bad credit to buy this lemon with 18% interest rate cause the loan has been approved.

Forget Panetta, bulk up for the stimulus fight, but start getting some arms warm for a fight over SCOTUS nominees. If she were to leave in Obama’s term, I suppose it’s nothing but trading one liberal for another. But who knows who we’ll get. If, for no other reason, judicial appointments, in general, and SCOTUS appointments, in particular, were reason enough not to vote for Obama.

BuckeyeSam on February 5, 2009 at 1:21 PM

Well, with what is going on now with our new Leader…. thought this best shows how some of us feel. This is cute and we could use a laugh. It is off topic but had to share this.

What could be more transparent that writing your requests in invisible ink. Layoff the guy, his godfather just got impeached.

eaglewingz08 on February 5, 2009 at 1:27 PM

Richie da Mare is a major crook. He’s also a big supporter/puppetmaster of BaRama. As for transparency – not so much.

Those of you unfamiliar with Daley’s criminal destruction of Meigs Field on Lake Michigan are going to think you’re reading about something that Chavez did in Venezuela, or Castro in Cuba.

Nope. Rich “Squeaky” Daley in Chicaga.

BuckeyeSam on February 5, 2009 at 1:21 PM

Uh…pancreatic cancer? She could be leaving before spring hits Chicago. But remember, she’s a radical leftist, and the GOP played it straight when Clinton appointed her. I think the confirmation vote was 96-3. She was well qualified, which should be the only question.

She will be replaced by a very young judge who will infect the court for 30 years with similarly communist views, but that’s why we have Presidential elections.

Jaibones on February 5, 2009 at 1:36 PM

His control of Chicago by racial gerrymandering has been brilliant. He has two competing black groups – south side and west side – and a hispander group and he gives them all shiny trinkets and paddle balls and they leave him in power, distracted like little children with toys.

His ally in the state general assembly (Madigan, another Irish mobster from the Chicago Catholic League) helps keep the racist groups at bay by divvying up state political offices and jobs programs. It’s an amazing racket.

Jaibones on February 5, 2009 at 1:41 PM

Shovel-ready as in soviet-style work for the state and never advance your stake in life.

If these programs already existed why were there no lines at the employment office already if things are so horrible?

The economy isn’t failing, its changing and adapting. Circuit City was killed by Amazon.com, New Egg, Buy.com and more. That and no sales tax plus shipping to your door (I got a 42″ plasma TV, no tax, delivered to my front door via the Internet).

Daley – “It’s none of your #$%^@* business what we spend your money on.”

Vashta.Nerada on February 5, 2009 at 2:13 PM

Daley has a lot vested in not being transparent.

He’s skimming money from the top of property taxes to fund all sorts of fun things (*cough*Olympics*cough*) at the expense of little, nagging issues (*cough*schoolspolice*cough*) which he’s probably wanting the Feds to pay for.

And heaven forbid should folks in Chicago want to blog about it anonymously…, they get subpoena’d.

yo on February 5, 2009 at 2:18 PM

Ed, have you heard the latest from Mayor Daley on selling city assets and the respective virtues of private versus public sector employees????

Of course he is right, but if GW said this he’d have been impeached. ; ))

Ah .. but Mayor Mumbles stumbled out of that insult:

“We can’t compete with the private sector. The private sector has a complete idea of who your customers are. Government doesn’t have customers. They only have citizens.”

Today, the mayor clarified his earlier remarks.

“I said that some people just watch the clock — government workers or anybody else — and leave,” he said. “But here in Chicago, we’re fortunate that people just don’t watch the clock.”

Eloquent man.

I just thought of something. I’m a degree holding and certified System Engineer.

If I were to be laid off what kind of job should I expect from this stimulus? It is unlikely that this bill would stimulate other IT industries to hire more SEs. My college degree will do me no good when having to grab a shovel-ready government created job. I’m not down playing shovel-ready jobs because they helped me pay for my education.

All my hard work will be for naught and I’ll be forced to make as much as the next non-degree and non-certified shovel-ready guy.

Allahpundit, Ed, Malkin, Hannity, Limbaugh, Levin, after the fairness doctrine is passed, you may all be joining us shovel-ready workers.

shick on February 5, 2009 at 2:34 PM

The list is secret so that we don’t know that we will pay for the olympics.

Pam on February 5, 2009 at 2:54 PM

It is my endearing hope that someone takes the Freedom of Information Act and shoves it right into Daley’s fat flabby face, so as to remind him that since it is TAXPAYERS money we are talking about here, every single penny of it needs to be accounted for.

But accountability is one word that one seldom hears come out from between Daley’s teeth.

It can’t just be me.

madmonkphotog on February 5, 2009 at 3:31 PM

I bet it has the Ohare Airport expansion in it, which has basically destroyed several neighborhoods around the current property. Daley is such a tool.

This is a crap sandwich with some Heinz-Kerry ketchup and the liberals will be laughing and dancing as they head to their freakin’ tax payer funded conferences. How much you want to bet that unemployment goes up over the next two years while companies move their operations to more tax friendly countries?

Atlanta Media Guy on February 5, 2009 at 4:21 PM

“Daley’s list probably includes $500 million for that unnecessary boondoggle expansion of O’Hare.”

A drop in the bucket.

Rick Moran’s January 30, 2009 Pajamas Media article elaborates:

Chicago Mayor Seeking Bailout Money for $15 Billion Airport Albatross

“The possibility that Daley will be successful in getting a cut of the stimulus money is pretty good. He has kind of an “in” with our new president; not only does Barack Obama hail from Chicago, but many of his top advisers cut their political teeth helping to run Daley’s corrupt machine. And if all else fails, he has the second ranking Democrat in the Senate in his hip pocket. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin usually jumps before Daley even says “boo,” so there is a very strong likelihood that Hizzoner will get his money.”

From Victor Davis Hanson:

“At home our President is losing critical credibility—but at a geometrical rate in week 2 of a four-year term. He must for our sake improve—fast!”

All Obama has done is shine a 100,000 candle-power spotlight on a dazzlingly corrupt Democrat Party. These jokers stink worse that a rancid head of Limburger cheese.
