Stimulusmania: Support for bill dropped 12 points in January, says new CBS poll; Update: Senate calls it a night

No wonder The One’s in such a hurry to ram it through: The longer this thing rots, the more people end up running from the smell. A bare majority still support it, CBS notes — contra Rasmussen — but that’s the only stimulus-related good news here for Democrats:
Eighty-one percent of Americans say the stimulus bill should be a bipartisan effort. Just 13 percent think it is okay for a bill to be passed with only the backing of the Democratic majority.
There are signs that Americans are receptive to Republicans’ push to increase the proportion of tax cuts in the stimulus bill: Asked whether higher government spending or tax cuts for business would be more effective in ending the recession, 59 percent choose the tax cuts. Just 22 percent prefer more government spending…
The public is not optimistic about the impact of the economic stimulus bill: Just 21 percent believe it will significantly shorten the recession. An additional 18 percent believe it will shorten the recession slightly. Forty-five percent say it will not shorten the recession at all.
Madam Speaker assured Obama tonight that she’s got his back. We’ll see how that holds up when he comes asking for another trillion for TARP II, especially since (again per CBS) a slim plurality now opposes any further bailouts.
The Senate vote is expected tonight but no one knows when. Over/under on the roll call is 10:15 p.m.; over/under on the bill itself, which is still being written, is $815 billion. Treat this as an open thread if you’re watching the floor debates on C-SPAN2. While we wait, here’s Grahamnesty continuing his big day with a golden moment on the floor versus Barbara Boxer.
Update: Reid’s decided that the debate on whether to drop $800 billion should extend another couple of hours, so he’ll see you tomorrow morning.

I’m looking for print confirmation, but Major Garrett is saying that the Senate has apparently convened and will continue debate tomorrow. Don’t they have to go to conference even after they pass it?

The floor debate has ended, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t be called back in, and most definitely behind the scenes moves are taking place. It’s not a good sign for Obama/Reid though.

……… but of course at the last minute, the plans were changed.
During this speech, prep rally, I really don’t know what to call it, I checked my local CBS station, and they had the nightly news going……..

jewells45 on February 5, 2009 at 8:59 PM
Yes. He also made fun of those who oppose the Bill because of how much it spends, and the crowd laughed with him at those opponents. THEN he had the nerve to say that his doors are always open for the Repubs. This guy is such a nut job.

Has anyone seen a compelling argument made about why acting over the next week is so superior to acting in a month from now when this whole dumb bill can be fully vetted and debated?
I’m no rocket science, but the speed of government is usually at a snails pace. I mean the last time the president ’scared’ congress into acting w/the Poulson Panic of ‘08 which was an ‘absolute necessity NOW’ thingy as well… after they passed the bill, it was still MONTHS before they did anything with the money.

Thanks for the info, everyone.
INC on February 5, 2009 at 9:00 PM
Republicans should get really animated over this bill because the public is moving their way.
You don’t fish for votes by casting behind the school, rather you cast in front of the school and show a little animation.
Within 2 weeks the Republicans have been handed a major agenda to run against that recenters the party around its core identity while simultaneously causing the Obama administration to lose precious traction.
If Republicans can keep hammering away, some of the Blue Dogs might start falling off the back of the Pelosi bus.
moxie_neanderthal on February 5, 2009 at 9:01 PM
I did like the way he explicitly admitted that he thinks that a “stimulus bill” is nothing but a spending bill. He even laughed at those who thought that there was something different between a “stimulus bill” and your ordinary bill throwing money around without rhyme or reason.
That clip will need to be played over and over.
progressoverpeace on February 5, 2009 at 9:01 PM
I’ll give The O one thing, he’s got brass balls. He’s not afraid at all (watching on fox tonight) to basically call those opposed a bunch of dumb mother effers. He was laughing at how a “spending” bill IS a stimulus bill.
He really does think he’s the freakin’ Messiah.

amerpundit on February 5, 2009 at 9:05 PM
I mentioned ths on another thread a few days back, but perhaps it bears repeating. Obama has never had serious oppositon in his political life. He hooked into the machine and was slid into the state senate. He had his Senate opponent nuked by a newspaper that went to court to get the opponent’s divorce records open.
In the election, Obama had a friendly MSM that ignored all his problems and did character assassination on his opponents.
But now, he actually has some principled oppostion (which must be confusing to him, having no principles of his own).
Politically, he is still immature, and no wonder he’s having a temper tantrum. For the first time in his political life, he isn’t getting his own way. And even worse (for him) it’s in something that really matters.

I have never been this afraid since 9/12. Even then I was not THIS afraid.

For what it is worth I just email Sen. Specter. Reminded him that the TARP was passed quickly because of they were told the world was ending and it turned out badly, no need for a repeat performance.
Cindy Munford on February 5, 2009 at 9:24 PM
Exactly, and they will be led by the President who tonight blamed the Bush administration for this little [approximate quote as I remember it] package waiting for him in the Oval Office, neatly tied with a bow.

Yep even though it was Democrats that caused the problem in the first place starting with Carter and CRA, on through Clinton expanding it and then blocking reform and oversight of Fannie and Freddie till they melted down.

We can, we just need like a 100k give or take. Any one out there got that kind of flow? Heh.

Does Reid follow through on anything? He pulled a similar stunt on Iraq funding. He pulled out the cots, ordered pizza, and then cut the sleepover short.

Boy, I wish I could see the video of Obama tonight. I missed it. Was he yelling like Dean? Please tell me he let loose a “death to my career” scream!
DrStock on February 5, 2009 at 9:34 PM
Who cares what the libs do and who they blame??? We don’t want their stinking bailout!!!!!! The only Senator I have been able to get throught to is lib Kay Hagan in NC. She won Dole’s seat – something about pagans!!!! Anyway, call her and leave her your thoughts. She could use the guidance.

The absolutely insane speech that the idiot messiah just gave to the Dems at Willimasburg. It was scary. Scary stupid and scary scary.

A bunch of us Airheads feel the same, Boxer has got to be the dumbest person ever elected to the Senate and is a shame on our state. DiFi ain’t much better but she is usually coherent.

Obama had a melt down. He was making fun of the opposition, holding up the stimulus bill as a success in earmark reform, equating blind spending with focus economic stimulation, etc. He was getting the “crowd” to laugh with him at those who thought the Bill was nothing but a spending bill. He basically said, “Well, duh! That’s how you stimulate, you spend.” He then had the nerve to say his door was always open after poking fun at every last republican. It was the most unpresidential display he has made to date. I’m sure he thinks hit a home run, due to the peanut gallery, but it looked childish.

Apologies in advance for quoting myself, but I just remembered something I posted last Sept. 5, two days after Palin’s nomination speech:
Jim Treacher on February 5, 2009 at 9:40 PM
Call me crazy, but I think I see the next move all the way over here:
The next step the Dumbasscrats are going to pull is to draw up their “actual” budget. And that sucker is going to be all tight and balanced. After all, the silly crap was the “stimulus” bill, not the “budget.”
Do I have tinfoil on my head?
Sekhmet on February 5, 2009 at 9:41 PM
It was.
Poptech on February 5, 2009 at 9:41 PM
When did stimulate = govn’t spending
Isn’t stimulus creating jobs so people can spend
Now I am confused.
Maybe the dictionary has it wrong, or I was asleep that day in school.
Brat4life on February 5, 2009 at 9:41 PM
If the Left blames the Republicans for the bill not passing I will wear their complaints like a badge of honor. Glenn Beck did a tirade on the world coming to an end if ______ part of the bill didn’t pass, then listed all the crazy things that are in it. It was both funny and frightening at the same time.
Cindy Munford on February 5, 2009 at 9:42 PM
Still waiting to see the video of this display of his legendary temperament.

Red State has a great story saying that Meg Whitman could be CA’s next governor and Carly Fiorina can actually dislodge Boxer. Talk of hope. The way that clown is melting down, we could have a sweep of the congress in 2010, if the world is still there.
