Hope and Change: Another Cabinet appointee with tax problems

The good news? After the back taxes owed by Tim Geithner and Tom Daschle, Hilda Solis’ bill looks like petty cash. The nominee for Secretary of Labor became the third Barack Obama Cabinet appointee to have undisclosed tax problems. Her husband just paid off tax liens from sixteen years ago, a development that the White House belatedly acknowledged:
The husband of President Obama’s Labor secretary nominee paid about $6,400 Wednesday to settle tax liens that had been outstanding for as long as 16 years against his business, the Obama administration told USA TODAY this afternoon.
The disclosure came shortly before a scheduled 2 p.m. meeting of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which will vote on Rep. Hilda Solis’ nomination as labor secretary. The hearing was postponed; no reason was immediately revealed.
Los Angeles County records showed 15 outstanding state and county tax liens against Sam Sayyad and his auto repair business, totaling $7,630. Two other liens worth $981 were released in 1999 after Sayyad repaid the taxes owed, according to county records.
That makes 25% of Obama’s original Hope and Change Cabinet picks comprised by tax evaders. Add that to the fourth scandal of Bill Richardson’s pay-for-play federal grand jury investigation, and we have a full-blown vetting disaster. And that doesn’t even count new Attorney General Eric Holder’s politicization of Justice ten years ago on behalf of Bill Clinton in the FALN and Marc Rich pardons, or the dozen-plus lobbyists hired by the President Who Hates Lobbyists.
How embarrassing has Obama become? Even Bob Woodward has begun making fun of him:
Attracting the largest audience to date at the Clinton School of Public Service in Little Rock, Ark., Woodward touched on the new president when he asked the audience of 1,400 how many voted for Obama. Most raised their hands, reports our Suzi Parker, prompting him to say: “Now, some of those votes, those hands are suspect. Everybody likes to be with a winner.” Then Woodward told a story of seeing a man, after Obama’s election, put an Obama sticker on his car. “Maybe he’ll get a cabinet appointment—if he paid his taxes,” said Woodward, who later added that the president’s next cabinet appointment will be “someone who fills out the short form.”
Have we had a more incompetent vetting process in the White House over such a short period of time? When we criticized Barack Obama’s lack of executive experience, even we didn’t think it was going to be this bad.

Since hypocrisy is a mainstay of the liberal.
They assailed Joe the Plumber during their character assassination for his tax problems, yet all their people don’t want to pay taxes!!!!!
IT IS BECAUSE TAXES SUCK! Our tax system is non-sensical! Not even the top dog libs want to pay it!

What is with Democrats and tax avoidance? They cheat the people they claim they want to help? Only 16 days into this “administration.” Sheeesh…all this free material for GOP campaign ads in 2010 and 2012.

News Flash. Bush is not President any longer. Stop trying to justify these tax cheats by actions of others. Come on.

Obama’s smarter than we thought. With enough appointees, he may collect enough in unpaid taxes from his cronies to pay for the crap sandwich.
Laura in Maryland on February 5, 2009 at 3:51 PM
No, they only want us little poeple to pay and pay and pay and pay instead while they dodge, dodge, dodge. If I mail my quarterly taxes at 12:01 on April 16, I will be fined and assessed penalties. Yet these assholes don’t even declare the income and it’s no big deal.

I don’t think Solis should be punished for the sins of her husband, personally. Granted, there is a small measure of guilt by association but the liens are not hers and should not be used to determine her eligibility or appropriateness for the position.
GoodSamaritan on February 5, 2009 at 3:59 PM
It depends on how you define incompetence. Clearly tax evasion wasn’t an issue with those vetting the filthy bastard’s nomination. I’m sure they were careful to ensure that these people were pro-murder, anti-Second Amendment, and for gay marriage.
Taxes just weren’t a concern (even though that’s vetting 101) and it has come back to to bite them in the butt. One tax cheat would be bad enough but we now have enough for a sports team and it isn’t just forgetting to pay for the nanny- there are some collossal examples of tax evasion involved here.
highhopes on February 5, 2009 at 4:00 PM
Isn’t it ironic that what Palin was criticized for during the election campaign should have been directed to Obama: lack of foreign affairs experience, being a polarizing figure, and not being ready to lead!
technopeasant on February 5, 2009 at 4:01 PM
Try that logic with the IRS (assuming you are not a dem bigwig).
Vashta.Nerada on February 5, 2009 at 4:01 PM
Last time I checked, Joe the Plumber wasn’t up for any cabinet appointments and wasn’t accusing people who don’t pay their taxes of being unpatriotic….nice try though.
If you don’t see a difference there, just keep drinking the Kool-aid.

Maybe Dear Lord needs to turn down the thermostat a touch, it’s melting his brain.
kirkill on February 5, 2009 at 4:02 PM
Why not? Why do you think that having a tax cheat for a spouse isn’t relevant? Don’t you suppose at some point in the last 16 years she knew about this?
highhopes on February 5, 2009 at 4:02 PM
Man, we’re gonna balance the budget just by having Obama’s nominees pay all their back taxes!!
rockmom on February 5, 2009 at 4:02 PM
With the virtual colonoscopies that Bush people had to endure from your Democrats/MSM, I’d say, uh, Yep! He sure did! Chew on it.
Patrick S on February 5, 2009 at 4:03 PM
What’s really hilarious is that he’s appointing Gregg to Commerce. Apparently, some people don’t want him over Census, so now the director of the Census Bureau is reporting directly to the White House.

Our new President apparently can’t even keep the organizational chart straight.
cs89 on February 5, 2009 at 4:03 PM
I think the no-guilt-by-association thing stops when you’re married to the guy who doesn’t pay his tax liens until you’re nominated for a cabinet position. It’s not like he’s a guy she only saw on occasion and had no clue about his finances.
amerpundit on February 5, 2009 at 4:03 PM
Of course the timing of payment is not suspect, AFTER 16 years.
Throw the shovel up out of the hole, you’re getting too deep.

Don’t know. Why don’t you do some research on that and get back to us?
Ampersand on February 5, 2009 at 4:04 PM
Treacher is a righty. His point is likely that the media and Democrats crucified JtP for having an imperfect record, while the argument is that Solis should just slide.
amerpundit on February 5, 2009 at 4:04 PM
The irony doesn’t stop there. Remember the Media constantly beating the “lack of vetting” on Palin? Remember how the McCain camp was incompetent for their vetting?
portlandon on February 5, 2009 at 4:04 PM
There has been no vetting, who has every said no to Mr. Obama? They will probably start doing it now that he’s been embarassed a few tmes.

Then lets add up all the cheats according to party line.

Exactly. They went after him just for asking a question, and now it’s biting them in the ass.
But I’m glad you enjoyed my try. Which is the same as yours.
Jim Treacher on February 5, 2009 at 4:18 PM
Should she be rewarded with a Cabinet position? She is not being punished by anyone. She’s just been exposed as having had a 16 year old tax delinquency (just recently cured, in a strange coincidence). That’s all. If paying taxes is patriotic, then not paying taxes is un-patriotic. Do you want a non-patriot in office? According to Joe “The Teeth” Biden, those are the facts.

Bump this….that’s a great vid clip.
aquaviva on February 5, 2009 at 4:23 PM
Gotta hand it to that Obama. Nominating tax cheats who then pay back what they owe. A brilliant way to bring MORE money into the treasury! The guy is truly devious. At this rate he may be able to wipe out that deficit. Tee-hee.
