Hope and Change: Another Cabinet appointee with tax problems

posted at 3:38 pm on February 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The good news?  After the back taxes owed by Tim Geithner and Tom Daschle, Hilda Solis’ bill looks like petty cash.  The nominee for Secretary of Labor became the third Barack Obama Cabinet appointee to have undisclosed tax problems.  Her husband just paid off tax liens from sixteen years ago, a development that the White House belatedly acknowledged:

The husband of President Obama’s Labor secretary nominee paid about $6,400 Wednesday to settle tax liens that had been outstanding for as long as 16 years against his business, the Obama administration told USA TODAY this afternoon.

The disclosure came shortly before a scheduled 2 p.m. meeting of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which will vote on Rep. Hilda Solis’ nomination as labor secretary. The hearing was postponed; no reason was immediately revealed.

Los Angeles County records showed 15 outstanding state and county tax liens against Sam Sayyad and his auto repair business, totaling $7,630. Two other liens worth $981 were released in 1999 after Sayyad repaid the taxes owed, according to county records.

That makes 25% of Obama’s original Hope and Change Cabinet picks comprised by tax evaders.  Add that to the fourth scandal of Bill Richardson’s pay-for-play federal grand jury investigation, and we have a full-blown vetting disaster.  And that doesn’t even count new Attorney General Eric Holder’s politicization of Justice ten years ago on behalf of Bill Clinton in the FALN and Marc Rich pardons, or the dozen-plus lobbyists hired by the President Who Hates Lobbyists.

How embarrassing has Obama become?  Even Bob Woodward has begun making fun of him:

Attracting the largest audience to date at the Clinton School of Public Service in Little Rock, Ark., Woodward touched on the new president when he asked the audience of 1,400 how many voted for Obama. Most raised their hands, reports our Suzi Parker, prompting him to say: “Now, some of those votes, those hands are suspect. Everybody likes to be with a winner.” Then Woodward told a story of seeing a man, after Obama’s election, put an Obama sticker on his car. “Maybe he’ll get a cabinet appointment—if he paid his taxes,” said Woodward, who later added that the president’s next cabinet appointment will be “someone who fills out the short form.”

Have we had a more incompetent vetting process in the White House over such a short period of time?  When we criticized Barack Obama’s lack of executive experience, even we didn’t think it was going to be this bad.

I don’t think Solis should be punished for the sins of her husband, personally

She has been a federal legislator for nearly ten years — the actions of her spouse to shortchange the government through non-payment of taxes is entirely relevant.

Who’s talking about punishment? All that’s being said is that she not be REWARDED. You make it sound like she has some right to a cabinet position.

PackerBronco on February 5, 2009 at 4:32 PM

Bump this….that’s a great vid clip.

Did anyone else see Jake Tapper go after Gibbs for a stupid answer today? Goodness. Allah, you should post the clip.

0 gets such super praise for his control of his transition or at least he had been. No credit ever given to President Bush. Ever wonder what 0 would have done had he had the same treatment during transition and entering the WH as President Bush was given?

solis is a bad one too.

rob verdi on February 5, 2009 at 4:47 PM

I hope this lady crashes and burns. I looked up her voting record, and it is one of the most far-left ones I have ever seen. Voted for Bush impeachment investigations, against every major anti-terrorist measure (her right, but something tells me she’s just a far left shill), marching for what are basically illegal immigrants. Yeah, her husband’s taxes do matter. I would hope she knows about what he owes considering that they are married. Not a very stable marriage if she doesn’t.

When we criticized Barack Obama’s lack of executive experience, even we didn’t think it was going to be this bad.

The most surprising thing to me in the last week was the fact that Daschle withdrew his name from nomination.

I know that many are praying for our nation. I keep praying that the evil and destructive plans of men will be confounded and confused. (I have been grateful to see some answers to that prayer). I also pray that God will bring our nation to repentance.

INC on February 5, 2009 at 4:53 PM

I hope she gets tossed. This Solis idiot is 100% pro-illegal alien and pro-union. The ninny even wants to completely unionize healthcare! That is a prescription for disaster. (pun intended)

That’s pretty much a given for the Secretary of Labor in a Democrat administration.

Anybody else use TurboTax? If so, you know that you can compare your deductions to the average deductions taken by your financial peers. My peers are liars.

I pretty sure tax evasion is wide spread.

I bet you’re right.
It’s just pretty unfair when not everybody who screws up has to go to jail!

This is getting to be ridiculous. How can this be happening – I just can’t believe it. Honestly. I. can’t. believe. it.

If they’ve cheated on one aspect of their taxes, there’s a pretty good chance they’ve found more they haven’t copped to yet.

anniekc on February 5, 2009 at 5:27 PM

So, no politician has to go to jail or pay a penalty for tax evasion.
Willie Nelson’s IRS bill jumped to 16.7 million after penalties.
No double standard there.

Johan Klaus on February 5, 2009 at 5:28 PM

It’s times like this when I want to go visit Daily Kooks and Huff-n-puff Post and ask them if they still get their panties in a wad over the fact that private citizen Samuel Wurzelbacher owed $1,200 in back taxes.

anniekc on February 5, 2009 at 5:27 PM

There is a serious point here. American stability is based on the rule of law. How long is the public going to tolerate paying THEIR taxes when they see virtually every Democrat in the Obama cabinet able to evade taxes? The filthy bastard needs to shut his administration down and go back to square one because at this rate nobody will trust him or the criminals he’s surrounded himself with.

Who needs vetters? Hilda Solis is a hardcore Socialista. That’s all you need to know:

In May 2001 Solis voted against President George W. Bush’s 11-year, $958.2 billion tax cut plan.

In May 2003 she voted against a $350 billion tax cut.

In April 2005 she voted against a proposal to permanently repeal the estate tax.

In November 2005 she voted against a bill calling for a $49.91 billion reduction in federal spending over a five-year period.

In May 2006 she voted against $69.96 billion in tax cuts and credits through 2010, including reductions on capital gains taxes and dividends taxes.

In June 2006 she voted against a proposal to reduce estate taxes beginning in 2010.

This is all brought to you by the people and Party who insist on raising our taxes. That is the larger point. Quibbling over the severity, or husbands, or excusing it with the “but, but they paid the penalties back-blah blah…” means nothing.

When you support a political system that demands increase in the confiscation of your/our private money, you owe it to follow through with your professed convictions. This trend illustrates just how much you believe in the crap you support and vote for. Problem is, it’s jerks like these that saddle the rest of us with the consequences of their election choices.

Bad, rotten government.

anuts on February 5, 2009 at 6:32 PM

There’s that really great vetting process again!

Talk about all hat and no cattle!

Its becoming embarrasing.
Are there any people in WA DC that are honest?

good heavens…i thought he wanted to rehabilitate our “moral standing” in the eyes of the world. he’s really hitting this one out of the park. how many countries have made statements telling him to, in a sense, “step off”?
1. india- “don’t step back to the clinton years with kashmir”…”get you some bidness”
2. chavez said he “smelled like bush”…i’m assuming he meant the sulfur of satan.
3. spoke fightin words to countries that thought he was trying to insight a trade war

It’s no wonder CA is in such bad shape financially (US Treasury too) for the non-existing tax code enforcement which allows this crap to go on unchallenged. Now those of us who do pay and obey the law have to be penalized for these friggin deadbeats. Pitchforks and torch time!

Mark Garnett on February 6, 2009 at 8:09 AM

I was just reading Ann Coulter’s new book Guilty and the following quote just jumped off the page at me. It is so apt for what’s going on with Obama’s appointees.

The very reason that shocking facts are likely to come out about Democrats, but not Republicans, during a presidential campaign is that the Media Attack Machine has inevitably given the Democrat a free ride for his entire political career. While a Republican can’t run for town clerk without reporters poring through his divorce records and youthful high jinks.

So obvious, so true. Maybe we should stop complaining about media bias.

Not even right-wing bloggers have been able to predict the shocking degree of Obama’s incompetence. That’s scary.
