Graham goes nuclear on Obama over stimulus: “Scaring people is not leadership”; Update: Stimulus worse than doing nothing, says CBO; Update: Or does it?

In my three years of blogging at HA, this may be the first time I’ve seen the boss and Grahamnesty on exactly the same wavelength. Credit where credit is due: I thought he and McCain would be a collective rubber stamp for The One on all things “bipartisan” but they’ve both come out hard against this boondoggle. And then some: This is as close to bareknuckle as you’ll ever see from this guy, especially the shots at Obama’s leadership. I figured the GOP would keep triangulating between Obama and Pelosi, blaming the Democrats while staying well clear of attacking our new Messiah, but it looks like the bill is now sufficiently toxic that they think they can use it to score some points on him, too. Sweet.
Reid says they’ve got the votes. And, per MM, it sounds like he’s right:
Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine said Obama, in a meeting with her on Wednesday, had persuaded her that the ultimate bill should be “in the neighborhood of $800 billion.”
“The president did convince me,” she said, adding that she believed the two sides would reach a compromise on the Senate stimulus package on Thursday.
Update: Via Instapundit, turns out The One is right to be afraid. Just not for the reason he thinks.
CBO, the official scorekeepers for legislation, said the House and Senate bills will help in the short term but result in so much government debt that within a few years they would crowd out private investment, actually leading to a lower Gross Domestic Product over the next 10 years than if the government had done nothing…
CBOs basic assumption is that, in the long run, each dollar of additional debt crowds out about a third of a dollars worth of private domestic capital, CBO said in its letter.
CBO said there is no crowding out in the short term, so the plan would succeed in boosting growth in 2009 and 2010.
Update: One of our three lefty readers e-mails to say that the Wash Times misread the CBO letter to Gregg and that there actually will be net growth. The key passage from the story is this:
CBO estimates that by 2019 the Senate legislation would reduce GDP by 0.1 percent to 0.3 percent on net…
The agency projected the Senate bill would produce between 1.4 percent and 4.1 percent higher growth in 2009 than if there was no action. For 2010, the plan would boost growth by 1.2 percent to 3.6 percent.
The confusion lies in the term “on net.” Does that refer to the entire period from 2009 to 2019 or the period not including 2009 and 2010, since specific growth numbers for those two years are provided? If the former, then the Times is right and CBO is claiming that the loss in GDP from 2011 to 2019 will wipe out any growth over the next two years for a net loss. If the latter, then the Times is way off. Simple math, per the guy who e-mailed me:
2009: 1.4 to 4.1
2010: 1.2 to 3.6
2011-2019: -0.1 to -0.3Worst Case 2009-2019: 1.4 + 1.2 – 0.3 = 2.3% positive total effect
Best Case 2009-2019: 4.1 + 3.6 – 0.1 = 7.7% positive total effect
I’m trying to find a copy of the CBO letter to resolve the discrepancy but the site is down right now. Can anyone help?

Monetary Solutions, Part A and B:
A) College brat:
SEND MONEY!
B) Government Brats:
THROW MONEY!
Instead of simply trying to solve the mess they created by targeting bad mortgages and frozen credit and rebuilding the vital national infrastructure (crumbling bridges, etc.) , the Dems (and some RINO’s) are intent on gorging themselves on the future public taxation trough, and buying votes with their fantasy largesse.
This is not a STIMULUS BILL but a PUBLIC REAMING.

Unless they have redefined the term, net = all years inclusive from baseline. Perhaps the confusion comes from the YBY.

“Roubini sees the global economy shrinking this year, and banks writing down at least US$3.6 trillion — compared to the US$1.1 trillion disclosed so far.
While the US government is resisting nationalizing its biggest banks, Roubini says it will have no choice because they are now “effectively insolvent.””

Times are really tough, so I decided to re-enter the work force after years of staying home with the kids. My husband and I were working on the budget, and I listed some money for an interview suit. Hubby responded by saying “If you can buy new clothes, I get a new TV”. My son overheard us and demanded a new game system. My daughter declared “If he gets a wii, I get a pony”. This went on for weeks with each one-upping the other.
Long story short, we’re now millions in debt, I still haven’t landed a job interview, and we’re up to our necks in pony loaf;)

Let’s get the damn math straight… worst case…
2-year gain = 2.6%
9-year loss at -0.3% per annum = -2.7%
Net Loss for the inclusive period 2009 thru 2019 = -0.1%
This is a hell of a return for a trillion dollar investment that must be paid back with interest… but about what any sane adult would expect from a government program.

johnnyU on February 6, 2009 at 2:39 AM
Take it from an old farmer, net is what you clear. In other words if it in the long run it costs you more to feed the cows than you are making to milk them, that is a net loss. If on the other hand you make a little something that is a net gain. The question however, is would you make a larger gain without the bill. If that is true, you make the same gains without the net loss.
Make sense?
Terrye on February 6, 2009 at 6:22 AM
Holy sh*t. I realize how inexact the discipline is, but on top of everything else that’s been said and written, if it boils down to the overwhelming criticism plus these economists against and guy who didn’t use an interest-bearing checking account until 2005 (Obama), I say go back to the drawing board.
Democrats are screwing the country over with this bill. Why can’t the GOP single out the sh*t and start hanging it around the necks of particular Democrats. Require some of these POS to own the objectionable parts of the package. Then we’ll get some real outrage. Personalize then demonize. Sorry to be vindictive, but the Democrats cannot be allowed to enact this POS bill without some vehement opposition. This is important to create a death match over it.

Folks, this is SO SIMPLE… This Bill, as it sits, is NOT going to make any difference for America, it will only DO HARM by creating more big Government programs, fraud, waste and victims. It has SO MUCH pork, so many pet radical Liberal programs, money for Abortion, STD’s, ACRON and Union thugs, that it is impossible to compromise on… IT MUST BE DEFEATED OUTRIGHT! No Republican should support ANY PART of this Bill, it must be done with ONLY radical Liberals voting for it… Our Senators MUST STAND UNITED! We must make them all see that this will NOT help, but it WILL hurt America. We can make The Messiah “own” this ugly Bill… We WILL make huge gains in 2010 and 2012 if WE STAND AGAINST THIS BILL on Conservative grounds… Demand TAX CUTS, SPENDING CUTS, NO PORK, NO EARMARKS… If Harry has the votes, oh well, but NOT ONE REPUBLICAN should agree. Snowe and Collins are NOT Republicans, and we need to DRIVE THAT POINT HOME… They are NE Liberals named Republicans… They NEVER have represented any Conservative veiw… Call on them AND Blue-Dog Dems to fight against this. Call ALL Democrates and Repubs… Let your voicess be heard. It’s now or never… Do the “right” thing! No compromises, no deals… Bill DIES or the radical left “owns” it ALONE! Let that be your message to Congress.
