Disrespecting Zinni

When General Anthony Zinni publicly criticized the Iraq War, he became a darling of the Left. Now that the Iraq War has all but ended in victory, he’s apparently dispensable. Zinni had been offered the position of Ambassador to Iraq, accepted it, and had even received a congratulatory phone call from Joe Biden. While he made arrangements to live in Iraq, though, Obama and Hillary Clinton changed their minds — and never bothered to tell him:
When retired Marine Gen. Anthony Zinni told the Washington Times that he was offered the job of U.S. ambassador to Iraq before being passed over in favor of diplomat Christopher Hill, he did not say that one of the outrages of the experience was that his friend of 30 years, fellow former Marine Corps commandant and now national security advisor James L. Jones, had offered him the job, and then failed to tell him when the decision was changed.
“Jones had called me before the inauguration and asked if I would be willing to serve as ambassador to Iraq or in one of the envoy jobs, on the Middle East peace process,” Zinni told Foreign Policy. “I said yes.”
“Then two weeks ago, Jones called,” Zinni continued, “and said, ‘We talked to the secretary of state, and everybody would like to offer you the Iraq job.’ I said yes.
“The president called and congratulated me,” Zinni said. [See Update II.]
Then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asked for a meeting last Monday night, Zinni said. He said he went to the meeting in her office at the State Department, where Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg and Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Williams Burns were also in attendance.
“She thanks me, asked me my views on Iraq,” Zinni recalled. “She said to Burns and Steinberg, ‘We’ve got to move quickly, Crocker is leaving, we’ve got to get someone in there and get the paperwork done and hearings… Lots to do to get ready to go.”
With that in mind, Zinni tried working quickly to get to Iraq, figuring that he would hear from Burns within hours about how to proceed. When Zinni heard nothing for a day, he began making calls and got no one. He finally tracked down Jones after several attempts to contact him, and Jones told him that Hill had the job instead of Zinni. They offered Zinni the Saudi Arabia post as a consolation, and Zinni told them to shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.
So what happened to the man Democrats used repeatedly to bolster their efforts to undermine George Bush’s efforts in Iraq? Zinni works for a company that does a lot of business in Iraq, and supposedly the Obama administration worried about how that would look in a confirmation hearing. Another source told FP that the Obama team worried about the optics of sending two former generals as ambassadors to Iraq and Afghanistan simultaneously.
However, neither of those explanations make much sense. Given how hard Obama fought to keep Tom Daschle and his $5 million worth of work for the industry he would soon regulate, the Dyncorp position would have been hardly a burp in a Democratic-controlled Senate. Obama’s appointed 12 lobbyists to key positions already, and an ambassadorship even to a key post like Iraq wouldn’t raise an eyebrow. And who cares whether one general or two becomes Ambassador to war theaters?
It’s yet another fumble from an administration that has become much better known for bumbling than for competency and leadership. It has become Amateur Hour in Washington DC. (via Michael Goldfarb)
Update: And speaking of supposed conflicts of interest, wouldn’t it matter more that the Secretary of State’s spouse took in millions from foreign sources than Zinni being the #2 man at a business that sells product in Iraq?
Update II: Foreign Policy has corrected part of the story. It turns out that Zinni got a call from Vice President Joe Biden, not President Obama, congratulating him on the post.

Well, this was rude and unprofessional of the Obama/clinton folks, but Zinni would have been a terrible choice. He is an apologist for Islamists which is something they have more than enough of in this Obama/Samantha Powers administration.

Put a stack of red chips on square Hillary for me. I wouldn’t say Zinni is a loose cannon, but he’s enough of a big mouth contrarian that Hillary had no intention of having him around for media to use as a foil for anything she does or says regarding Iraq.

Thanks, genso. This administration is going to try to redefine the way a lot of things are done and they are going to fall flat on their face every time. I am somewhat relieved to see the left starting to each other.
The left is showing their real proclivities, once again; be nice and giving and apologetic to America’s enemies and be ruthless, underhanded and nasty to their political rivals in America. Truly insane.

Zinni is a slime bottom feeder that deserves the treatment that he is getting. When he was put in charge of dealing with Israel, he demonstrated that he bought into the entire Leftist panoply of lies relating to the middle East.
.
It couldn’t have happened to a better candidate.
FactsofLife on February 5, 2009 at 9:01 AM
This insult to Zinni will be seen as a huge loss of face to the Iraqis, who will be less willing to do business with the company Zinni represents, especially since they probably advertise his involvement as offering an inside track to the American government. Lost revenues might just push the company to the edge of bankruptcy, and you know what that means… BAILOUT!

Maybe the Iraqi government objected to this appointment. And others (Petraeus?) might have let it be known that Zinni wasn’t the best choice. Whatever happened, this kind of whining isn’t very becoming, not from a former Marine and all. Suck it up, General. Don’t be such a cry-baby.

And for the record, I think Obummer is doing awesome! (For a guy who has absolute no experience whatsoever).
You really have to grade on a curve. He’s like Ted Stryker landing an airliner. Sure, he’s still emotionally crippled from the raid over Macho Grande (over Macho Grande? No I’ll never get over Macho Grande!), he’s never actually flown this kind of plane before, half the passengers are vomiting in buckets while learning to speak jive, and the plane falls apart on impact …
… but most folks survive. Mostly. So a big thumbs up from me. He’s doing swell. For somebody who has zero business doing what he’s doing.

If I were Obama, I’d be leary of the next “tell-all” book too.

The election’s over; the Democrats are trying to distance themselves as quickly as possible from all ties to any American military personal, and let the world know they’re not doing anything to betray their allegiance to terrorists.
Ten bucks says Obama’s going to do an internal re-check of his birth certificate, and decide that he never really had that great-grand uncle once removed on his mother’s side, who he claimed had once served in the US Army.
And nobody’s going to question it. We always knew that story was too good to be true.

If we think Zinni’s bad, just wait for who Congress approves for General or Admiral rank over the next four years. It’ll be a succession of Wesley Clark types. I feel for our military, at least what’ll be left of it.

The other odd thing is, Obama has only ever been critical of Bush’s dealings with North Korea. Choosing Hill leads me to suspect that was all a bunch of campaign rhetoric.

So sad, too bad. Ed, if you did more of your homework or were more educated about Islam and the Middle East, you’d know that Zinni had been the “darling of the left” long before his comments on the Iraq war. It was because he was tight with Yasser Arafat and very anti-Israel, as Bush’s Mid-East envoy and as an openly anti-Israel figure during the Clinton Administration. But, then I can’t expect you to care much about that, since you’re also pan-Islamist Jihad Grover Norquist’s biggest cheerleader, too.

Or in other words, meanwhile, back to meeeeee!
I appreciate that she is a voice against Islamofacism, but come on! I support Israel. Nothing more to say about that. But it seems that anyone who don’t take up arms and cap a few jahadis before breakfast is anti-Israel in her estimation.

Hilts on February 5, 2009 at 12:32 PM
Last month there were 4 American deaths (4 too many) in Iraq. Not exactly trumpeted by the MSM. God bless General Petraeus (the finest American commander since Matthew B. Ridgway) and the troops under his command.
Hilts on February 5, 2009 at 12:37 PM
You are right on the money Rick. I served for 20 years in the AF and worked with 4-star generals for 14 years. There are two types of General officers, (1) the type that really care about their troops and are great people (the current CENTCOM commander) and (2) the kind that are careerist, self centered and treat everyone below them like dirt (Clark, McPeak and Zinni fit the mold). You can now look for the political generals to come to the top once again. Yes, I do believe Obama will find some “reason” to get rid of Petraeus to please George Soros and the MoveOn crowd that was so instrumental in getting him elected.
Pray for our troops.
Agent of the Cross on February 5, 2009 at 12:38 PM
Regarding McPeak, I was told that there was not a single person in the military who respected him.
Hilts on February 5, 2009 at 12:54 PM
Merrill A. (Tony) McPeak was hated by just about everyone in the AF during his time as AF Chief of Staff. It was so bad that someone actually drew a mustache on his official portrait in the Pentagon – while he was the Chief of Staff. He was actually working for Obama during the primary but was forced out for anti-Israel remarks if I recall. I surprised that he hasn’t returned like some other folks thrown under the Obama express…
Agent of the Cross on February 5, 2009 at 1:05 PM
A whole bunch of Israel haters are suddenly resurfacing – Samantha Power being the most notable. Ironically, Obama was elected by a combo of Jews (I was not one of them)and Jew haters.
Hilts on February 5, 2009 at 1:38 PM
Agent, while I never served, I am a Navy brat. I grew up in Norfolk, VA. My Dad was a 22-year veteran (1940-1962). My major was History, and I’ve studied from Alexander the Great forward. I understand political, social, and military History. Weak flag officers are a cancer, whose damage goes far beyond their retirement. That damage includes all the great men and women who leave the service due to being subordinate under such @ssholes, as you mentioned. I also include in that damage the downturn in reenlistments which then morph into a lowering of standards to make quota; this impact is worse than ever before what with our high tech military technology. The ideological damage done by these political @ssholes to the long-term mindset of military policy can be catastrophic. Couple that with Obama’s planned Civilian Thug Corps, which is far worse than just calling them Brownshirts (Brownshirts weren’t on the Government dime before Hitler became Chancellor), and you have a recipe for violent insurrection, with our military and police (the parts of Government with guns) having to take sides. At what point does an order become illegal? While I don’t like anyone having to make that decision, I fear they will have to do just that all too often. Things are looking, through my historical perspective, pretty gloomy to me right now. When the Uber Kewl Dude-in-Chief inspires no confidence in the ranks, things can go from bad to clusterf*ck in a heartbeat. Like I said, I truly feel for our military under Obama. They have serious short- and long-term choices to make. While I have the utmost respect for those who serve, I do not envy them their current situation. The Clinton White House treated the military who served and.or frequented there with utter contempt. We saw how that worked out on September 11th. Bush did a great job rebuilding our military capability. Unfortunately, Obama is going to hurl what he inherited as deeply as possible down the well, just this time cover the opening with concrete, hopefully, according to The One’s thinking, never to be seen again. I know I have too much respect for those wo died to give me what I have now to ever allow that disrespect to happen. I don’t know how I’ll do it, but I know I will not be alone when whatever needs doing gets done.
RickZ on February 5, 2009 at 1:48 PM
Sounds like Zinni trusted the wrong people. It’s a little hard to feel sorry for someone who allowed himself to be used and then ended up discarded.

capitalist piglet on February 5, 2009 at 2:12 PM
I am sorry but somethings smells
I have met a brigadier general serving in iraq (medical corps)
I never say anything like the behavior this idiot showed..
A general is supposed to be focused on ohh
Say WINNING the war…
So when the president or the chief of staff of the us military
Replaced his sorry ass ..
It was because he COULDNT accomplish the task..
So he retires and in a fit of rage go out on the liberal circus and begins to bash the president
During a time of war..
Now there is a place for a proper review..
Even during the time of war..
Its called the pentagon..
So the very fact that they wanted him out shows you
that apparently he wasnt up to the task..
And thats ok (maybe he was the wrong general at the wrong place and time)…
But i swear something smells about this..
I cant put my finger on it..
