Comedy gold: Tapper humiliates White House spokesman over transparency

posted at 4:39 pm on February 5, 2009 by Allahpundit

NRO’s been dumping on Gibbs for days, wondering when Obama’s going to have mercy on him and pull the plug. Watch this and I trust you’ll agree: Hopefully never.

Tapper’s after him for information about incoming Obama appointees, specifically financial disclosure forms and waivers from the new lobbyist rules. And no wonder: There seems to be a front-page story buried in every one. Exit question: Didn’t he learn from the campaign that subjects that make The One uncomfortable are necessarily “distractions”?

It’s be funny to see Teh One just say “F- it, I’m done.” Even with the prospect of Biden, the stock market would go through the roof.

What is Obama going to do when something important really hits the fan. Say something like a US Reconnaisance plane is forced down in China, or a Hurricane of supposedly Biblical proportions hit the US, or a major US City is hit by terrorists?

Uhhh uhm well uhm you know I’ll get back to you uhm uhh later.

eaglewingz08 on February 5, 2009 at 6:38 PM

God Bless Jake Tapper – he WAS the only in the MSM that I know of who tried to maintain an even keel while covering the Obama campaign – he did not feel a tingle in his leg like Chris Matthews did or give him a pass like Dobberman did.

Nor is he a transparent partisan hack like Andrea Mitchell/Chuck Todd.

Can you imagine how his colleagues at ABC are right now flat out HATING him for daring to question the Obamessiah’s “commitment” to “transparency” ?

Keep it up, Mr.Tapper. We need ATLEAST ONE HONEST reporter out there in the White House press corp.

AWESOME!!

Tapper’s OBAMA CLAUS report before the election was dead on and one of the best from the big network reporters all year.

Everyone look at OBAMA CLAUS now! Look at him!

Will he make it till the end of March even?

I noticed Tapper was sitting next to the aesthetically challenged Helen Thomas. Has she lost her front row status, or has he been moved up? I know Bush moved her to Siberia, but that was then. Can’t imagine Tapper has standing with the most touchy sensitive, you-can’t-talk-about-that-here administration.

And on a related topic: What is the over-under on bringing back the Sedition Act?

‘O’ better get Tapper his shots before he turns into a rabid dog and bites this dismissive POS Gibbs.

TinMan13 on February 5, 2009 at 8:34 PM

“The fact that people are praising him for doing his damn job shows how pathetic the Fellatio Media are.”

RickZ, I agree with you on that point. But you will also agree that he is risking something here – of becoming deeply unpopular amongst his colleagues in the press and of course getting completely ignored in the future by this arrogant buffoon Gibbs.

Yes, it is his damn job – but he could very well have just mailed it in and sucked up to the sleazebag who is bringing “change” and spreading “hope”.

I know that the bar is pretty low right now for being called a journalist – but alteast he seems realize that it is his job to ask serious questions and try to be an actual journalist for once.

nagee76 on February 5, 2009 at 8:41 PM

It’s not Gibb’s fault. It is the MSM who put this truck load of horse turds in power. For the media to act self-righteous and indignant for asking questions now that they should have hammered on two years ago is the vilest hypocracy. The MSM on the whole is an enemy of the people. Now they have ca ca on their hands and wonder where it’s coming from. Feckless morons all.

Remember Bob Zelnick?

He was a first rate reporter for ABC who was chased away when he wrote an objective (read unflattering) biography of Albert Gore. Obedient Clinton brown-noser Stephanopoulos, by contrast, was rewarded by ABC with retired David Brinkley’s job.

Let us hope ABC doesn’t try to sabotage Mr. Tapper’s job for disloyalty (read objectivity) towards the DNC political “family.”

viking01 on February 5, 2009 at 10:51 PM

Whole Lee Currappe! This is amazing! My admiration for Jake Tapper just doubled!

As for Gibbs, he’s proving himself to be another B-HO screwup. Back at the old “Office” of the President-Elect, they talked about “hitting the ground running,” but they forgot — it’s FEET first, not HEAD first! Faced with a question that has only unsatisfactory answers, Gibbs runs to the safety of NBC News’ WH correspondent, Chuck Todd. I didn’t think anybody could look more uncomfortable as Press Secretary than Scott McLellan, who sometimes looked like that trembling Martin Short character that always said “I know that! You think I don’t know that?”

If there was anything close to balance in the writing of SNL, next Saturday there would be a skit in which an actor playing Gibbs would answer every tough question with a deep breath and “Chuck?”

L.N. Smithee on February 5, 2009 at 11:31 PM

I miss Tony Snow.

This post did get me looking at Tapper’s reports, and I saw something curious. Apparently, when Obama was leaving DC, he shook hands with a Marine standing at attention near the helicopter. I’ve never heard of Bush or anybody else doing that, but I’ve not personally been in the military either.

Is this another sign of Obama’s cluelessness (like Oval Office window moment), or am I out in left field somewhere?

cs89 on February 5, 2009 at 11:48 PM

Hawkins1701 on February 6, 2009 at 12:01 AM

Has a U.S. President ever just QUIT before? I’m sure The One is starting to have second thoughts right about now. Who knew every appointment would be scrutinized? Who knew the country wouldn’t applaud His every expenditure? This gig isn’t as much fun as He imagined.

Is a forfeit for “health reasons” so hard to imagine?

Maura O on February 5, 2009 at 5:52 PM

I have a feeling Obama won’t last through the first term. I don’t know what exactly will cause it, but I do see at least 3 things that are going to destroy his administration and make retirement look appealing
1) Foreign powers making him look like a naive fool
2) Domestically, he’s going to find out the American publich has shifted as far left as he thought they had
3) Corruption. This is the real sleeper, but he specifically moved to Chicago, the most corrupt political machine in the country, specifically to get into politics. It sounds like he was attracted by the corruption and the opportunity. Given that, do we really believe he’s untouched by the corruption around him?

The corruption won’t be enough to get rid of him, but foreign and domestic crises will make him so vulnerable that the corruption will probably finish him.

ThereGoesTheNeighborhood on February 6, 2009 at 12:05 AM

Is a forfeit for “health reasons” so hard to imagine?

Maura O on February 5, 2009 at 5:52 PM

I worry about his actual health. Both parents had severe health problems and short lifespans. His wife may try to look out for him but there may not be anything she can really do to undo the pressures of the office.

Maura O on February 6, 2009 at 12:54 AM

And he never did release a complete detailed health report….

Maura O on February 6, 2009 at 12:53 AM

:-) Hmmmm.

Before the election, that health report may have taken the edge off of his viability on Election Day. After the election, it may have national security implications.

I wonder if foreign intelligence agencies already know something about his health condition – or undisclosed parts of his personal history – that could make it easier or more tempting to try to precipitate some form of health crisis, perhaps by applying pressure in certain proscribed ways, while avoiding others deemed ‘counterproductive’.

I’m speculating that the Gaming of Obama is well underway, by a whole gaggle of rogue states (to which Russia belongs once again, sadly).

Retrospective question: Did the KGB know about Kennedy’s Addison’s Disease, or his other weaknesses, and find ways to exploit them systematically, in order to break him down physically?

If things keep going south for the One they way have been, and it’s highly likely they will, perhaps by the time John Ziegler’s documentary comes out the public will be more interested in the question “Why didn’t we know about Obama’s lack of experience/competence before?” Obviously, since Ziegler’s documentary will offer an answer to that question, it may fall on more (and many more) receptive ears than expected.

And this ought be brought back out of mothballs and enjoy a second viral life. “I am a believer in, um, knowing what you’re doing, when you apply for a job. . .” Back in the day when Obama still knew that fat meat’s greasy.

OK. Now all this – I think you are all correct, there could be health problems, but more importantly, there could be any number of face-saving scenarios that could be concocted that would not only allow him to resign, but which would also allow his supporters to have sympathy for him.

This would be preferable – for him – to supporters turning on him, or seeing through to the fact that the emperor wears no clothes.

Myself, I’d prefer the later, for learning purposes. Then again, allowing a man to save some face and retain much of his fan base is a compromise I could live with.
