Obama retreats on trade war

posted at 12:42 pm on February 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama found another way to look weak and inexperienced this week, this time on the trade war threatened by the administration’s stimulus package.  After pandering to unions by inserting a “Buy American” clause in the gigantic porkfest, Europe and Asia threatened trade sanctions on American companies competing for business in their markets.  Obama finally ran up the white flag instead of Old Glory:

The European Union warned the US yesterday against plunging the world into depression by adopting a planned “Buy American” policy, intensifying fears of a trade war.

The EU threatened to retaliate if the US Congress went ahead with sweeping measures in its $800 billion (£554 billion) stimulus plan to restrict spending to American goods and services. …

Last night Mr Obama gave a strong signal that he would remove the most provocative passages from the Bill.

“I agree that we can’t send a protectionist message,” he said in an interview with Fox TV. “I want to see what kind of language we can work on this issue. I think it would be a mistake, though, at a time when worldwide trade is declining, for us to start sending a message that somehow we’re just looking after ourselves and not concerned with world trade.”

Give Obama some credit for coming to his senses, albeit a little late.  The protectionist language in the bill locks out foreign suppliers from our infrastructure projects, which sounds great until one realizes that other nations will lock out American companies from their infrastructure projects as well.  It’s a replay of the Smoot-Hawley disaster, and it would magnify the current economic crisis immeasurably in touching off a trade war — just as the original Smoot-Hawley did in 1930.

Unfortunately, though, Obama looks less like a leader and more like a man reacting to events.  He should have foreseen the consequences of the legislation before pushing it.  Now, instead of looking like the leader of the free world, Obama looks like a man flailing in the water, looking for lifelines, without a clue as to how to govern or an understanding of trade or foreign relations.  He projects weakness, uncertainty, and inexperience at a time when America can ill afford any of those three, let alone the hat trick.

Is it possible to impeach a President for being completely incompetent.

Yes, but Carter has been out of office for a while now.

Oh…you meant Ogabe? Yeah, you can.

One problem to that solution–two words:

President Biden. I think that–order of ascension–is why Clinton, although impeached, was not removed from office.

Obama has to go! Impeach him and all his Democrats that have been screwing us for years. Hell even throw in a few Rino’s too!

Hey Sethstorm,, I have a couple of questions. Why does the big unions always support open borders with Mexico? That one really makes me wonder.

When you eviscerate the means for citizens to join, they’ll find any warm body.

Why is it that the Big Three automakers still can’t out quality their cars compared to their German, Korean, and Japanese counterparts?

It’s easy to be a 2-product manufacturer – oversized golfcarts for the masses, or extremely expensive exotics with less performance/dollar than you would have ever found with the Big Three.

Japan? They have no shortage of golf carts called kei cars, much less larger versions that are just oversized golfcarts. It gets worse when Japan first tried to do high torque/low rpm and couldn’t find a transmission to fit.

Korea? They’ve copied off of every foreign and domestic brand design and made them worse. Want an underpowered Town & Country knockoff – buy a Sedona. The Genesis – another copy-off of the Germans. The first time around, it was a more direct and shameless copy. South Korea is just like a poorly operating copier when it comes to car design.

Germany? They don’t back down from power, but they don’t back down from expense. If they only would back down a lot on the latter – they’d be able to match Detroit in performance/dollar.

When those countries can match Detroit on performance/dollar, they have room to talk.

Both labor and the Producers need to find a middle ground.

Problem is no side wants to back down first. It is something I would be open to having happen if it killed off the labor relations attorney business as well as the worst of the unions – at the same time.

This has really gone past the point of comical. All that goodwill and ‘benefit of the doubt’ crap gone in the first 2 weeks.

The ‘image’ has been commercialized to the point it has become a joke, his judgement is clearly flawed, and he is causing division in his own party.

The guy is a moron. He doesn’t understand domestic issues, or foreign policy. The only nations he hasn’t completely pissed off are our sworn enemies – who he is grovelling to while being played for a fool.

His lack of effort or concern during the freezing temperatures and ice storms that left 55 people dead in the affected areas is disgraceful after his comments about the Katrina response.

FEMA has struggled to deliver food, water and services to those in need – and Obama hasn’t done so much as a fly-over.

Instead he sits roasting in the Oval Office – until he was so overcome with exhaustion after 2 consecutive weeks of work that he felt a need to ‘get out and read to some children’ while people freeze to death in Kentucky.
