Unbelievable: Obama appointee withdraws because of … tax problem

posted at 11:21 am on February 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

How many does this make? Geithner, Daschle, now Killefer — is that it? It feels like more, thanks to Rangel and, allegedly, Caroline. Almost makes me regret that Team Barry couldn’t push Princess through to the Senate so that we could dump that one on him, too.

Almost.

When her selection was announced by Obama on Jan. 7, The Associated Press disclosed that in 2005 the District of Columbia government had placed a lien on her home in the upscale Wesley Heights neighborhood. The local government alleged that just three years after she left a high-powered Treasury post she began to fail to pay unemployment compensation tax for a household employee. And she failed to make the required quarterly payments for a year and half, whereupon a lien for $946.69 was placed on her home.

During that period, Killefer and her husband, an economics professor, had a teenage son and daughter, but she had two nannies and a personal assistant to run her life when she was on the road, she told Harvard business students back then.

The job she was up for? “Chief Performance Officer.”

Follow the timeline here. Daschle knew he had a tax problem last June; Geithner knew he had a tax problem no later than November. Killefer’s problem dates to 2005. Point being, none of this came as any eleventh-hour surprise to Obama’s vetters … and yet all three were nominated anyway. Exit question: Why? Killefer is expendable but Geithner and Daschle are both crucial to The One’s plans; the former’s his economic quarterback and the latter’s his point man on universal health care. If you know you’re going to have this problem with both of them, why hand the media an irresistible narrative by trying to sneak Killefer in there too? Doesn’t this make Daschle’s nomination even more precarious?

But wait, there’s more:

Daschle pushed Hindery for Obama job

By BEN SMITH & EAMON JAVERS | 2/3/09 4:24 AM EST

Tom Daschle backed the patron who paid him a million-dollar salary and supplied him with a free car and driver for a job inside the Obama administration, two Democrats said Monday.

Leo Hindery, whose InterMedia Partners employed the former Senate majority leader, had been mentioned as a possible secretary of commerce or U.S. trade representative.

“Tom was pushing for him,” said one Democratic source.

Instaglenn has the best comment of the day, from Reason.

Here’s a question for Daschle (and for that matter, Timothy Geithner, who had tax and nanny problems of his own that didn’t stop him from being named Treasury secretary): When you amended your taxes and coughed up about $140,000 in back taxes plus interest, did you feel like you were stimulating the economy as much as you would have if you had spent that money yourself?

Women seem to be held more responsible for the household employee taxes than men are. At least that’s the pattern I see.

An Obama nomination is getting us more money than an IRS audit.

So question is: If the nomination is withdrawn, does the nominee still have to pay up?

If you know you’re going to have this problem with both of them, why hand the media an irresistible narrative by trying to sneak Killefer in there too? Doesn’t this make Daschle’s nomination even more precarious?

It’s not a big deal. The press will give it minimalist coverage, will buy the Messiah’s story line that it was an accidental oversight that could happen to anyone, and it’ll move on. That’s how the press handled Jeremiah Wright during the campaign and that’s exactly how they’ll handle this.

But don’t worry. If, by chance, a Republican is ever elected again, we’ll get wall-to-wall coverage on taxes. Look at what they did to Joe the Plumber for a $1,200 tax lien.

Outlander on February 3, 2009 at 11:37 AM

You can’t make this stuff up if you wanted to!

A commenter on Right wing news summed it up best:

13 days into Obama’s administration and you have the following:

1. He’s proposed slashing defense spending by 10 percent during a time of not one, but TWO wars.

2. he had the Iranians laugh at him and call him weak for begging for talks, scoffing that THEY are the ones to demand preconditions. They have said – surprise! – that the moonbat’s desperate desire for talks is a sign of weakness.

3. The North Koreans have taken the judgement of Obama, and told the South to forget about all those agreements to ease military tensions along the DMZ.

4. Half the people Obama wanted in his cabinet has turned out to be crooked: Geithner is our first tax-cheating Secretary of the Treasury, Daschle is a crook of even more prodigious proportions, Richardson ain’t there anymore only because he took himself out of the running because his case is so damning. Hillary had her own embarrasment, though at least that was hushed up.

5. Members of his own party are having second thoughts about his “stimulus” package.

6. He’s made a full frontal assault on Rush Limbaugh’s freedom of speech.

7. He’s on the verge of sparking a major trade war with China AND Europe because he proposed to limit large chunks of his stimulus to American contractors only.

8. He gave a knee-jerk order to close Gitmo… but has NO idea where to send the inmates and therefore won’t actually close ANYTHING ANYTIME SOON. What he DID do was give the impression that he doesn’t have Bush’s resolve to prosecute the war on terror.

9. He signed an order to ban “torture,” (or at least, waterboarding. Then it became public knowledge he is not averse to sending prisoners to OTHER COUNTRIES TO BE TORTURED for REAL. What THAT does for America’s image abroad remains unexplained.

10. He told Arab TV that he wanted to return America’s Standing in the Middle East to what it was 30 years ago: You know, 1979 – Iranian Hostage Crisis and Beirut Barracks Bombing ring any bells?

If we survive the next four years it will be a miracle.

Badger40 on February 3, 2009 at 11:50 AM

what about Obama himself, does he have any Tax problems?

jp on February 3, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Yes, as far as I’m concerned, he does. Two problems: one certain, one speculative.

Certain: WaPo reported (and the Boss echoed in a blog entry last summer) how Obama in 2005 or 2006 purchased a lot next to his Chicago residence for $104,500 from Rezko’s wife when the lot had been appraised at $40,500. In other words, Obama paid $64,000 more than the property was worth. That’s a taxable gift to the wife of a longtime friend, and it should be reported on a federal gift tax return. Obama cannot claim he made a bad bargain because he had an appraisal in hand. He’s even cited the appraisal in an interview. Also, it’s entirely irrelevant what Rezko’s wife paid for the lot. Apparently, Obama bought 1/6 of a parcel that she paid $625,000 for. Even if you want to argue that Obama was paying her a proportionate share of her purchase price, that’s irrelevant. He paid $64,000 more than the appraised value of the property. It’s a taxable gift that needs to be reported on a gift tax return.

So what? Well, it raises the next logical question: Why is Obama making a gift to the wife of a former henchman, now felon? You tell me. The MSM didn’t want to ask.

Speculative: I’d really like an investigative reporter to look at the seller in Obama’s home purchase. How does a guy go from asking $1.65 million in seller’s market to accepting $1.35 million? I’d like to know what the seller paid for the house. I’m betting the seller had a ton of capital gain–$300,000 more than whatever available exclusion ($500,000 or $250,000) applied to the seller for the year of sale. My theory is that the seller was entirely willing to take $300K under the table and outside of the Form 1099 reporting just to avoid $45,000 of capital gains taxes ($300K x 15%). Then you ask where the $300K came from, and you look at a Rezko or any number of other Chicagoland money people who are big Obama backers. Call it my Pelican Brief theory, but nobody has looked at that very hard. Sure, not Obama’s taxes, but it implicates him in something very sleazy.

One other thing, how is Obama and his wife handling the mother-in-law in the White House? Room and board in the White House for watching the kids? I’m smelling some kind of problem. I suspect that Obama, MO, and kids get the benefit of some kind of exclusion for the rent-free use of the White House. But what about Grandma? Will the federal government be sending her a W-2 or 1099 for room and board? Interesting question.

Chief Performance Officer (CPO) is a position in the Office of Management and Budget (within the Executive Office of the President of the United States), first announced on Jan. 7, 2009 by President Barack Obama. The new post concentrates on the federal budget and government reform.

This is the “definition” of CPO according to Wikipedia. :)
