Gallup: Stimulus bill losing support
posted at 9:18 am on February 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid counted on a significant honeymoon period after the inauguration to ensure passage of their bloated Generational Theft Act, or as they call it, the “stimulus” package. After forcing the bill through the House without allowing any Republican input on its makeup, the bill has landed in a more hostile Senate, where even Democrats wonder aloud how many votes it will get in its present form. They seem to have their fingers on the pulse of America, because according to the latest Gallup poll, the honeymoon has already ended:
A strong majority of Americans (75%) want Congress to pass some version of President Obama’s economic stimulus plan, but this group is split down the middle on whether it should be passed as is or with major changes.
Naturally, support for the plan is highly partisan. Although few Republicans favor passing the plan as it is, more than 4 out of 10 say it should be passed with major changes, leaving only a minority of 35% of Republicans who say the plan should be rejected altogether. A majority of Democrats, on the other hand, say Obama’s plan should be passed as is. Independents mirror the attitudes of the nation as a whole, split down the middle about passing it as is or with major changes.
The plan gets an as-is thumb’s-up from only 59% of Democrats, though, while more than a third want major changes to the plan or no bill at all. Only 37% of independents support this bill in its current form, and only 13% of Republicans. In both groups, the plurality calls for major changes to the stimulus bill; 43% of Republicans want “major changes”, while 35% want to stop the bill altogether. Americans want to see some kind of government action, but not the plan Obama and the House Democrats shoved down their throats.
Even worse for the Obama administration, the mood about the current bill is very pessimistic. A whopping 78% of respondents are concerned that this bill won’t stimulate the economy quickly enough to matter, evenly split between “somewhat” and “very” concerned. Only 17% believe the plan will make the economy “a lot better” over any time frame, and 47% think it will only make it “a little better”. Only 10% thought this package would improve the economy in 2009. Fifty-three percent believe it would either have no effect on their personal situation or would make matters worse.
For a $1.2 trillion package, those are pretty low expectations, and probably what drives the pessimism and the growing resistance to the effort. If Senate Democrats are paying attention to those numbers, expect an effort to begin cutting the pork out and trying to find political cover among Republicans by getting them involved in drafting a new version.

According to this poll only 17% oppose it ever passing. I think this has something to do with SAT scores.

Obama’s debut is going down in history as the worst start of any administration.
Tax evaders, selling senate seats, and now this terrible and irresponsible “stimulus” bill.
He is about 2 weeks away from saying “Why did I ever think I could do this job?”
As long as he was “cleaning up” President Bush’s policies, he was doing fine as President Bush’s janitor.
But now that he is “in charge”, he is failing miserably, one task after another.

This must be killing Rahm Emmanuel and Pelosi, Reid etc… who thought they could use this “crisis” to their advantage. Every day that goes by and this crap doesn’t get passed, more and more people learn the reality of it and oppose it.

Yet when his first 100 days are up, I’m sure the drive-bys will have nothing but kudos for the guy.
Have any Dems in the Senate actually come out against the bill in its current state or is this just a matter of not wanting their party to own sole responsibility for it?

“losing support” implies that the bill had support to begin with. It didn’t. It had Obama/Pelosi/Reid colluding to blow their whole wad of polical capital at one time. So long as the details didn’t get out, the ‘support’ would hold long enough to slam the bill through.
If there was ever a time for the GOP to be obstructionists, the time is NOW.

Very little credit…the conservative talk shows combined has helped…but quite frankly, it is a bad bill and the people know it. It is over 600 pages long and it takes time for the information to filter out…someone stated 2 million or 2 billion for the bill’s writers son’s lobbying company? Is that correct?

There is no question in my mind the Democrat Party thinks they are brighter, more intelligent, more noble, more caring and more aware than the rest of this country. George Orwell nailed it when he said ‘Some pigs are more equal than others’.
This reminds me of a motto I learned whilst still on Active Duty:
‘We, the Unwilling, working for the Unknowing, have accomplished so much with so little we are now able to accomplish anything with nothing and do it immediately‘
Which pretty much describes what the people of this country will be forced to do for the next few generations.
SeniorD on February 3, 2009 at 9:40 AM
Good point, but I don’t think the Senate GOP will follow the House on this. They will “strengthen” it, as Obama calls it, and then negotiate everything away in the joint conference. The left wants this to pass and it will.

On second thought, Rush’s biggest contribution was that Obama took the time out to attack him.
When this bill goes down, the cry will be from Rush “If he would spend more time on helping the economy and less time attacking a talk show host, maybe Obama could help the U.S.”
Obama’s biggest mistake is taking time out, even a few seconds, to attack a talk show host…imagine the most powerful man in the world, worried about a talk show host.
That is Rush’s biggest contribution…as a thorn in the liberals side.

And for that, he can largely thank Nancy Pelosi and the “stimulus” bill. Even the liberal daily newspapers around the country (not to mention the voters) expected a serious attempt at stimulus via infrastructure spending. Instead, they got a mindless pork bill. The libs don’t want to criticize the new administration, but I think it is safe to say that people are dumbfounded.
I say this as one living in Biden’s hometown (that would be Wilmington, Delaware, not Scranton, Pennsylvania).
Two tax cheats in the cabinet on top of the stimulus bill is more than people will bear. I think that has been realized, even by the libs.

There are a few who believe this bill was being put together under the guidance of Obama…it is so lengthy that many thought it had to be worked on months ago. And the payoffs to the unions are so heavy that it appeared to be a “pay back” for their firm support.
I would rather have this hang on Obama’s head, because if it is Pelosi, it is business as usual.

Obama may think that his winning the election was a mandate allowing him, Pelosi, and Reid to do whatever they want. And, sure, 35% of the country maybe wildly in favor of the radical agenda, but Middle America does not want to hear about spending for condoms and ACORN.

A prescription for Republican response
Go after Obama et al where it hurts:
1 – most people can’t tell a million from a billion so make lots of noise about small but obviously offensive inclusions.
2 – suggest a positive, easily understood, alternative approach: cancelling CAFE would cost nothing, and fix the car business. Championing Drill here, Drill Now and Nuclear would cost nothing, but produce hundreds of thousands of direct jobs – and millions of jobs indirectly. Buying risk, not loans, out of the credit market would fix that problem – and put the cost on the people to blame: congress. Formally renouncing health care nationalization and the $1.00++/gallon federal gasoline tax wouldn’t be credible in the long term, but would produce an immediate economic bounce.
3 – nail the guilty. No problem is resolved until the public has a court certified villain. Lets start with Dodds.. and go right to Obama.
How? introduce a bill in both houses of congress forcing 2 and 3 above because the 2010 platform threat will force a few democrats to vote for it – and Obama et al into retreat.

Americans by and large have no idea how the economy works. Which makes polls like this kinda meaningless. A lot of the people who oppose it, probably oppose it because they think it’s not big enough.
But Americans wanted hope and change. And boy will they ever get it. The change will be 6% unemployment last year to 16% by the time Obambi is done.

The Senate version, which will combine two bills(S. 350 and S. 336), differs from the House version H.R. 1. The Senate bill provides for a temporary fix to the alternative minimum tax and additional spending.

Make to contact your Senators. Make 2 phone calls. Get on their website and submit a comment form. Don’t make the blogs the only place you say something!
This is what I sent my AZ senators last week.
Honorable Senator, 01-30-2009
I am writing to you today to inform you of my severe opposition to the current “stimulus” bill before you today. To call this bill a “stimulus” package requires what Sec. of State Clinton calls “a willing suspension of disbelief.”
A cursory glance at the bill shows a tremendous amount of pork spending on pet projects. Two very simple tests for each item in the “stimulus” bill;
Does this item put money into the hands of individual taxpaying American citizen immediately?
Does this item cause the national debt to increase?
If the answers are YES on the first and NO on the second than this “stimulus” bill would be a good thing. However the answers are NO and YES respectively. Which means this “stimulus” bill is a spending package, not a stimulus package.
My solution; cut payroll taxes in perpetuity, make post tax deductions on my pay check to pretax deductions, cut the capital gains tax to 10% in perpetuity and cut the federal tax on gas. If I have more money in my hands I have more options were to spend my money. If I have more money to spend in my local economy I help “STIMULATE” the economy which causes more tax revenues to be generated. More jobs will be created as I will have more demand for goods and services! Multiply this onto the macro scale and real things start to happen. My stimulus bill would put more money into my pocket and pockets of all Americans!
Go in the opposite direction and the opposite is going to happen. If I have less money in my pocket I am going to stockpile more cash and I will not spend my money except for the basic necessities of life. I am not going to risk my family well being on the hope something changes.
HOPE is not strategy, it is a prayer.
Please think about the individual taxpaying American and the future generations’ burden of this overwhelming debt.
Please vote NO!
Respectfully,
My name
VikingGoneWild on February 3, 2009 at 11:13 AM
The Democrats really are that stupid
They could have spent the whole pack on themselves and their buddies by burying the money on programs like the ones FDR set up. Public works program set up by a Bill could allocate the money later, under cover, to the pols and contractor friends
Instead, riding the O wave, they named who got the money
