Did the UN set up Israel for aid photo op?

Israel accused the UN Relief and Works Agency of deliberately staging a situation where the IDF had to turn back aid shipments, for the benefit of photographers the UNRWA arranged to have at Kerem Shalom crossing. The UN agency deliberately sent material that had not yet been approved by the IDF for transfer into Gaza, forcing the Israelis to hold up half of the trucks at the transfer point:
The office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories slammed UNRWA on Monday and accused the United Nations organization of creating a provocation at the Kerem Shalom crossing by bringing trucks to it carrying supplies that had not been approved by Israel for entry into the Gaza Strip.
On Monday, the Kerem Shalom crossing was opened for the delivery of humanitarian supplies to Gaza, including some 50 trucks with supplies provided by UNRWA. The night before, UNRWA had asked the Gaza Coordination and Liaison Administration to permit the transfer of paper and plastic bags to Gaza, and had been told the request was under consideration.
Despite not having received approval, UNRWA, COGAT officials said, drove several trucks carrying the supplies from Jerusalem to the crossing and coordinated their arrival with several media outlets, which filmed the trucks being turned away.
UNRWA says they need the paper and plastic bags for schools, which don’t have enough textbooks for all of the students. They may want to avoid the textbook issues, though, as the Israelis have a legitimate beef about what kind of textbooks UNRWA supplies for Palestinian children. The US Congress has taken up this issue on a few occasions, and analyses repeatedly show that UNRWA provides textbooks that promote violence, hatred, and radical Islamist thinking.
Beyond that, though, UNRWA knows it has to have its shipments inspected and approved before the Israelis can allow them into Gaza. Instead of working with them to get the paper and plastic, they set up a phony confrontation for the benefit of the media, which gathered willingly to record it. This demonstrates rather nicely that the UN is not a disinterested third party at all, but an entity hostile to Israel’s interests — or at the very least, staffed by immature putzes.
It also produces a question about UNRWA’s priorities. If the humanitarian situation is so poor in Gaza, why the emphasis on paper and plastic rather than food, water, and clothing? Israel notes that they want to focus on those items above ancillaries like notepads and school binders. Shouldn’t a relief agency be similarly focused?

The UN should go by a different name
SCUMDOG Millionaires maybe?

Israel has no excuse for staying in this sham organization. I can no longer blame the UN for their stupidity, but only the members for remaining in that Utopian Nightmare.
Israel needs to leave the UN and not allow UN personnel into the country for any reason. Period.
progressoverpeace on February 3, 2009 at 10:07 AM
So wait…it goes like this.
UN is created.
UN creates Israel.
UN doesn’t like Israel anymore.
UN helps destroy Israel.
Please tell me the next step is “US and Israel dismantle UN”.
MadisonConservative on February 3, 2009 at 10:11 AM
The UN had all but declared itself the enemy.

As vulgar as the term “putz” is, it does not do the UN justice.

I agree..why send paper and plastic and not food and water? That’s insane.

UNsafe at any level.
the_nile on February 3, 2009 at 10:15 AM
The UN aided and abetted the Gazan terrorists and footage was shown here of militants getting into UN ambulances during a firefight. It is obvious to even the most uneducated that the UN is on the side of terror and/or anyone against Israel. The UN definitely needs to GO AWAY – and I mean that in a nuclear holocaust sense.

From one who has watched them for years, there is no “all but.”
But, like Democrats, their perfidy gets a pass in the press.

Downsize the UN. To about 1 person.

We’ll count ourselves lucky if the Secretary General isn’t part of Obambi’s cabinet!

“UNRWA says they need the paper and plastic bags for schools, which don’t have enough textbooks for all of the students.”
What about recyclable bags? Don’t they know there we’re in an environmental disaster that won’t be reversed for 1,000 years?
Dusty on February 3, 2009 at 10:40 AM
corruption is running deep and wide, and we don’t have a free press that cares. Well, except for the blogosphere.

Oops, didn’t mean recyclable. Meant reusable or whatever the catchy term the environannies call cloth/textile bags that are saving the environment!

The next President needs to appoint a UN ambassador whose sole purpose should be to obstruct the UN by vetoing everything possible in the Security Council.
thuja on February 3, 2009 at 10:48 AM
Anyone who believes that the UN is a disinterested third party — rather than the corrupt, incompetent (at best), criminal, and anti-Semitic band of thieves that it repeatedly shows itself to be — has either had his/her head in the sand for years, or has been listening for too long to our idiot, UN-butt-kissing, MSM.

People think the UN in Gaza is neutral. It’s not. All employees are Palestinians with their own agenda.

Guys, guys. The UN is just venting its frustration. See, UN agencies in Africa and the Balkans have the luxury of (1) getting kickbacks from various militias and strong men and (2) sexually molesting women and children with relative impunity. I get the sense they can’t do that in Israel and the Palestinian territories.
Outlander on February 3, 2009 at 11:19 AM
I just finished reading Joel Rosenberg’s book The Ezekiel Option. This is eerily similar to the kind of things he had written about the world turning on Israel. *cue Twilight Zone theme*
I have to admit, I really liked the way that book ended. It might be wrong of me, but sometimes I think I’d rather enjoy God smiting the UN with a great apocalyptic lightning bolt.

“UNRWA says they need the paper and plastic bags for schools, which don’t have enough textbooks for all of the students.”

So what the heck do paper and plastic bags have to do with school text books? Do they plan on “trashing” them! Or do they plan on using the paper & plastic bags to murder more Jews!

remember that bambi thanked the UN for saving Iraq from doom. (i emailed my brother, an Iraq vet, to thank him). so if the UN can save Iraq from all its woes, then why should be question them?

This sounds exactly like the UN I thought I knew.
But you don’t have to dig this deep to know the truth. Think for sec: where are the Arab/Moslem Universities that graduate engineers, nurses, doctors or other professions? Where are ANY Arab/Moslem universities that produce graduates ready to be productive in the private sector? Moslem societies do not try to educate their children to fend for themselves in a productive society, which is a damn shame – many would be hard workers and productive in the global society if they had been educated as to how to make a good living. But they have not built that ‘infrastructure’ for themselves.
Many of these societies have billions in oil revenues stretching over generations (no, we do not steal their oil) but have they produced a single first class university? No.
On the other hand, you see Israli schools producing lots of professionals and workers ready to contribute to a productive society.
Look at how a society educates their children, and you will quickly be able to determine what that society is all about.
To hell with the UN – we need to form a Org of Democratic Nations. That would have a hell of a lot more moral authority.

The U.N does not have to set up Israel turning away aid agencies. There is ample evidence of this during the siege as well.
Israel refused journalists in Gaza. Are people claiming that Israel has never stopped aid agencies reaching Gaza?
So international aid agencies have to ask Israel if they will allow paper, books and plastic’s to the residents of Gaza.It was ‘under review’.
The reason why they are bringing books,is to help the children of Gaza.
1.5 million of gazan’s are under 18.
Education is their economy for the future, and it is being
destroyed.
Electricity shortages are disrupting teaching hours, thousands of homes and schools have been destroyed including their work and toys.
The psychological distress is astounding.
Anaemic with stunted growth they are finding it difficult to concerntrate are withdrawn and agitated.
Some cling on hysterically to their mothers, others cannot hear the teacher anyway as there is a huge increase in impaired hearing due to noise with no access to hearing aids.So very frightened.
War is horrific .History has innumerable brutal wars, but the horrifying proportional of the dead being children has not been seen in recent memory.
.
Shocking indifference is incomprehensible. This does not mean that you support Hamas, both sides are wrong.
UNRWA has been hit 4 times destroying food and medicine by using white phosphorous. They represent the international community, you might think that is acceptable but the civilised world does not.
The U.S and Israel should be thrown out of the U.N.
