You know, this is sort of ironic. Biden did say that Obama was going to face a challenge early, but I never expected that challenge to come from Obama's own Cabinet nominees.

Update: Commenters are murmuring about Howard Dean for HHS. Er, don’t he and The One have issues?

I thought The One had issues with Clinton before he nominated her for State. It's all fun-and-games until someone loses a political career.

Although I'm howling at Obama's misfortune in this nomination, the blame seems to lie almost entirely on Daschle. He consciously hid the two income matters from Obama because he didn't want to pay the extra income and Medicare taxes.

Looking at Daschle's tax returns and accompanying tax information, only two things were evident on his returns. First, his bogus charitable contributions, which the vetters caught when they inquired into the 501(c)(3) status of the donees--something Daschle should have done when he filed the original returns. Second, the vetters might have noticed that Daschle had a 1099-MISC for his consulting gig for exactly $1 million in each of 2005 and 2006 and a third for $916,667 in 2007. That should have made Daschle wonder before he filed his 2007 return, but either he's an idiot or his accountant is an idiot, or both.

But as far as the value of the limo service, that didn't appear on his tax returns or in any tax information from the entity that gave him the car.

In the end, Daschle is a deceitful prick, and anyone who defends him as an honorable person is so full of sh*t it's unreal. Daschle is no idiot. He knows that the use of a car is an item of compensation that he should be taxed on. I'd like to see the consulting agreement to see if the car is mentioned. If so, I'd argue that Daschle and the entity engaged in tax fraud.

Treacher wonders if the liberals who fretted so much over McCain’s poor vetting have anything to say now.

Hmmm! Perhaps Democrats should consider adding waterboarding to their vetting process.

Tom made a mistake, which he has openly acknowledged.

Question is, what was his mistake? Did he make a mistake in calculating his taxes, or did he make a mistake in thinking he could get away with cheating on his taxes? I'm not automatically assuming the former. I have no doubt that had he not been nominated for this position, those taxes would never have been paid.
