Breaking: Daschle drops out; Update: I did it because of the Times, says Daschle; Update: Senate support was collapsing

posted at 1:00 pm on February 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

That’s two today. Maybe Geithner will resign too and we’ll make it a trifecta.

Tom Daschle has withdrawn his nomination to be Health and Human Services secretary. That’s according to a joint White House statement from President Barack Obama and his former nominee.

Obama said Tuesday he accepted the withdrawal “with sadness and regret.”

Stand by for updates. While we wait for details, any obvious candidates to replace him as the man who’s going to usher in the new golden age of “free” health care? I wonder if Hillary’s regretting taking the State position. Exit quotation from Thomas Ricks, via the Standard: “That sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach is caused by the course of Obama’s cabinet picks: Richardson blew up on the launch pad, two of the more prominent picks have tax problems, his CIA pick seems inexplicable, his no. 2 guy at the Pentagon needed a waiver from his new anti-lobbying rule, and Hillary Clinton and her hubbie strike me as a ticking bombs.”

Update: The full White House statement:

“This morning, Tom Daschle asked me to withdraw his nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services. I accept his decision with sadness and regret.”

“Tom Daschle has devoted his life to public service and health care reform, so that every American has access to health care they can afford. I had hoped that he could bring this passion and expertise to bear to finally achieve that goal, which is so essential to the progress of our economy and the well-being of businesses and families across our nation.

“Tom made a mistake, which he has openly acknowledged. He has not excused it, nor do I. But that mistake, and this decision, cannot diminish the many contributions Tom has made to this country, from his years in the military to his decades of public service. Now we much move forward, with our plan to lift this economy and put people back to work.”

Update: Cornyn calls him “Geithner on steroids.” It wasn’t the GOP that sunk him, though, it was the Times. Like Purple Avenger said, if you’ve lost the Praetorian Guard, you have no friends left. Belated exit question: Would he have fought on if not for Killefer’s withdrawal? He has a lot of old friends in the Senate who might have been willing to look the other way.

Update: Commenters are murmuring about Howard Dean for HHS. Er, don’t he and The One have issues?

Update: Another question swiped from the Killefer post: What on earth are Team Barry’s vetters thinking? They probably figured, correctly, that the public would swallow Geithner’s cheating because no talent can be spared to help get us out of the economic crisis. But what was the thinking on Dachle and Killefer? Did they think the public was so high on The One that the tax-dodger narrative wouldn’t stick with no fewer than three prominent examples of it in the news? Call it the audacity of Hopenchange.

Update: Confirmed: Daschle told Andrea Mitchell that he knew he was at endgame when he lost the Praetorian Guard.

Update: Was it really the Times, or did someone from the Senate clue him in that he was facing a humiliating rejection?

Democrats insisted they put no pressure on Daschle to quit. “I really hadn’t decided how I would vote,” said Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb.

But privately, they noted that he was headed for trouble because the confirmation vote would not occur until next week, allowing the grass roots effort against him to grow, and at least one Senate committee was likely to hold another public hearing on his nomination.

“This hadn’t reached the ‘grocery line’ test yet,” said Nelson, meaning people back home were not talking about it casually, “but we found it was something they were concerned about.”

Update: Treacher wonders if the liberals who fretted so much over McCain’s poor vetting have anything to say now.

Nah. It’s a question of judgment.
…one of many failures of such.

Count to 10 on February 3, 2009 at 1:19 PM

Judgment to lead?

Three Cabinet appointees down in flames in two weeks, and a Treasury Secretary is a tax cheat. At this rate, Obama will be a lame duck after 100 days.

Ya gotta wonder, is voter’s remorse setting in already? It’s time for Rush and Sean and Michael Steele and all Republicans to start the ball rolling, so that CHANGE strikes with a landslide vengeance in 2010…

First, it’s quite possible these people were never at the top of the list but the closest to the top that had the least confirmation headaches, though I’ll bow to a differing opinion from someone more knowledgeable in statistics.

But if it is the case they were at the top, that suggests another aspect — did Obama stay with these choices because he couldn’t renege on deals made during the campaign? I ask this because I can see a scenario where making deals and reneging on them, for whatever reason, is the quickest way lose support and funding.

GarandFan on February 3, 2009 at 1:43 PM

What gets me is Rahm Emanuel, Barry’s Chief of Staff, worked in the Clinton White House for eight years. I’m guessing here, but that’s not something you’ll find on a lot of peoples resumes. He know how things work, and don’t, and how the game is played, and won.

That being the case, how could Rahmbo not know what kind of backlash would be coming from these unvetted appointees? It’s like he wants Obama to be a failure.

Hmmmmmmmm. Smells like Clinton stink to me.

I disagree. With all of these terrible cabinet picks and the hiring of 17 lobbyists(so far), the whole “change we can believe in” crap is DOA.

The key is for the GOP and the conservative base to hammer Obama over this. There’s nothing cheap or partisan about calling him on his own hypocrisy. He ran as an agent of change and he’s arguably off to a worse start than any President in modern history. Don’t let him off the hook for that.

This stuff, the choosing of staff, is really pretty mundane and no-brainer stuff compared to what awaits him down the road. But this Administration is showing up at the new school and in a matter of days acting like a class clown. It’s bad enough that on the domestic front, everyone is going to believe they can give him a wedgie because he keeps coming to school with his underwear showing, but if there is much more of this, on foreign affairs, kids from neighboring schools are going to think they can take his lunch money on the bus.

Maybe no one was talking about it in Nebraska, but they sure are in Mississippi. I could’t help but overhear a group of six older men seated across the aisle from me in a restaurant this morning. They were steamed about Geithner and Daschle. When one of them admitted he was mulling a tax revolt, they had a serious discussion about the consequences of millions not filing this year in protest over Obama, the bailouts, stimulus, etc. Nelson is so wrong. People are talking and they are pissed.

Senate support was collapsing

Rats jumping off a sinking ship….when will S.S. Obama sink?

HornetSting on February 3, 2009 at 2:29 PM

Fox just played the 23-year-old ad of Daschle’s.

After seeing it, he had to go. America would have had a fit.

Comedy gold. SNL, bad as it is, has at least one funny skit.

The problem is, we may end up with someone more lefty like….ARRRRRGH DEAN….

right2bright on February 3, 2009 at 2:27 PM

Oh no! I would have preferred Daschle over Dean any day.

Behind the scenes in the West Wing, it’s probably more like DeNiro teeing off on the mob lieutenant with a baseball bat in The Untouchables.

Even if the press buries it after a day, remember Rush will be back Monday. And thanks to The Messiah, I do believe more people are tuning in these days. muahhahhahahhaa

hoosiermama on February 3, 2009 at 2:33 PM

I’ve had problems with Daschle for years.
Really? He’s never struck me as being hackish or anything like that.

terryannonline on February 3, 2009 at 2:25 PM

Surely you jest. Dashcle is about as phony as they come. I don’t know why anyone can takes the guy seriously. He reminds me of the biggest b.s. artist in my law school class. As I could have predicted, today my former classmate is a slip and fall hack, a morally challenged sleaze. Daschle has always given off the same vibe. I don’t know what keeps reporters from laughing right in the man’s face after he answers a question. It was a great day for the Republic when he was bounced from office.

Could. IS.

I’ve had problems with Daschle for years. This is sweet. Now that dope has paid all his taxes and lost the job. Next will be the IRS asking more questions and audits and penalties. What on earth will that dope do for a living now. Saying No to the One would have been much less costly.

JAW on February 3, 2009 at 2:22 PM

OOOOOhhhh…that’s gotta hurt. “Dammit, I paid the money I owed so I’d get the job, then didn’t get the job AND I’m out all that money, too…”
